    7:12 entirely relatable. It doesn't seem too hard to hard to find fellowship; a coming together for a common or shared goal. We do this frequently in our work or faith communities. But real friendship, mate...that is endangered species. The examined path is too often walked alone. That said It's a small comfort to know others have also found friendships wanting.

      I think we have more acquaintances than ever but friends that will actually show up and help you move out of one house into another is rare now days. Everyone stays so superficially busy. That is a topic I would like to cover a little more in the future. Thanks so much for watching my friend and stay blessed!

    The more I look back into the classics the more I realise that 'It was ever thus', which is a comfort somewhat as it stops me from panicking about the direction of society today. As you say, a classical education should be compulsory, but I can see why it isn't.

    When I decided to start this series I had intended to be reading it alone. I was happy to find shortly after that you recently started this video series. It feels to me like a little virtual book club. I hope you are able and willing to continue this series through to the end.

      I will most def complete it. I am just unsure how long it is going to take to complete. I’m going to try to keep up with a video a week but life has a way of changing plans. Truly appreciate you watching and glad to hear other people find value in this. That def helps keep up the motivation to complete them. And yes, I would live this to be a book club type deal where I learn just as much from others perspectives. I don’t won’t this to be just my views. Good luck reading through the series!

    I had lots of the same quotes highlighted as you. One of my favourite things about learning more about Penn was discovering that, before we moved, we lived in the same area as Penn's childhood home in London! I had friends that went to Chigwell School where he was educated. I had no idea that it was founded in 1625! We live in Canada now and I kind of miss being surrounded by that kind of history. Thanks for another great video. (BTW do you ship your coffee to Canada? I would buy some if so!)

    • @The_Cause
      @The_Cause  10 месяцев назад +1

      That’s so cool! I haven’t been many places in England but after reading some of these texts I want to go back and see where these people lived. There is just something about the history of Europe that is just so old and inspiring. I do not ship to Canada at the moment as the shipping cost gets out of hand. What part of Canada do you live in now?

    Another very good review, Rob. Congratulations. I don't particularly like this kind of books with aphorisms. If they are bad, you can see some wisdom here and there, but if they are good, you're pretty much overwhelmed by them! I enjoyed the background of this William Penn, as well as some of his opinions, as you summarized. Keep up the good work!

    It's ironic, but the greatest minds who founded the best virtues of early America still resonate with a Brit like myself. I think it's because they are rooted in a shared culture from the height of the Enlightenment.

    "If reason is not the sole part of how something is judged then we can be going into uneasy and unclear times."
    I know what you're saying here, and, absolutely, we have to not blind ourselves to the logical conclusions of our arguments. But reason does not by itself give us our aims; it is a tool for reaching our aims, but those aims must initially arise out of our personal values. To then discern between those values-though reason can, yes, help in various cases to eliminate impossible ends-we must rely on preferences, and that cannot be solely argued on reason.
    To put the point more directly: to even follow reason must be a decision based on values beyond reason. If it were not, then the defense of reason would be circular (and circular logic goes against reason), i.e. it would be circular reasoning to use logic to defend the use of logic.
    I'm really only nitpicking the "sole part" of the sentence you stated. But I do think it's important to recognize that reason cannot carry itself alone. It should be paramount in our arguments, absolutely, but it cannot be the "sole" consideration.
    This is only of importance because it explains why we as a society aren't likely to reach complete consensus, and that's okay. There will always be difference even with complete adherence to reason. Appreciating that difference is part of living in an open society and much preferable to a rigidly closed one.
    That said, though reason cannot defend itself with certainty (perhaps no closed system can), as a method it has served us so incredibly well that we can view its perpetual use as a human project worth continuing for the sake of the various benefits it accrues.
    ---
    I realize I'm being autistic about this point. Genuinely, it's been such an important lesson in my life that I want to share it in case it ends up important for you, too. Please read the above in a non-ranty tone.

    • @The_Cause
      @The_Cause  Год назад +2

      Had to read over that a couple of times and, I agree with you. The word “solely” was poorly used. The breakdown you provided was great and I truly appreciate the respectfulness of it. I do not take anything personally what so ever and I am actually learning just as much from the comments on some of these videos as the books they are about. I like the mention of perspective and preference because the reason I do something is based mostly on my preferences to certain standards and values and then based on that reason helps decide. I like your point of view in this.
      Critique away in future videos as I appreciate learning from these types of comments and it helps challenge my views or ideas on things. Stay blessed brother and have a great week!

    • @Nuance88
      @Nuance88 Год назад +1

      @@The_Cause In arguments it can feel like we've given all our reasons and yet the other person just isn't listening. At that point it can be tempting to assume the person just isn't adhering to reason. But that's when we must remember how values/preferences aren't solely inclined by reason. Once that's remembered, the conversation can pivot to one more intimate, less rigid, and perhaps more productive. That insight has served me well in life, and I hope it serves you well, too.
      A book you may appreciate that illuminates parts of my initial comment: The Open Society & Its Enemies by Karl Popper. It's a thorough philosophical argument against fanaticism, and one of the books that continues to orient who I am as a thinker.
      Thank you for considering what I had to say. Your videos model a curiousness and openness that many have lost; your tolerance of my light critique reinforces that impression. I wish you all the best, and I'm enjoying your steady climb through the greats of literature.

      I will look that book up and definitely check it out. As a newbie in the classics it is nice to have ideas like that challenged and new ones introduced. My main focus is on learning and improving at the moment so if anyone has any better ideas then I am all ears! Haha Again truly appreciate the detailed explanations and info. Thinking back I need to clarify that in the video. I am the student going through this series. I am not an expert by any means and really look forward to learning more from you all!

    Great videos. Binging them. Did the Shure MV7 come with the stand? Also, you should take the video audio and multiple it into a podcast too!
    Last, where did you purchase such a clean set of these books? Also, you summarize a lot of content really well, any resources you'd share regarding how you go about reading practices?

    • @The_Cause
      @The_Cause  Год назад +2

      Yes it comes with a little stand. At least the one I got back in the day. I have had them for a couple years now. Love them.
      I purchased my set off of FB Marketplace for $375. If you look for a couple months on there you can probably find a good deal and possibly a set local to you.
      I underline, markup and comment in my books a lot. I then go back and create an entire script/outline for my videos. I then go over that script a couple times and then record the video. So by the time I record I have read and looked over everything multiple times. The other thing that you do not see is the editing process. I cut out fluff and many of the errors I make. For the books that are on Audible I will try and listen to them as well after I read the physical book just for a second run through and clarification on pronunciation. It may sound like a lot but it is not if you break it up daily. I may create a video on that eventually. Thanks for watching buddy!
