- Meet the guardians of the Tower of London 👀. Ravens have been residents there for more than 400 years - it is believed King Charles II insisted the birds be protected after he received a warning over what may happen should they leave. The task of making sure they stay at the Tower falls to the ravenmaster. We sent Lisa Hartle to meet him.

I was there on a visit with my kids once and we watched some tourists try and goad one Raven with their umbrellas but was meet with the wrath of the flock chasing them across the open square in the Tower until thay ducked in to a doorway. Then the Ravens slowly walked back thru the now empty yard daring anyone to do the same. Still makes me laugh.
They are the towers defenders
Ravens are very intelligent creatures and have great memories, I bet they will remember those people none too kindly. One of my favorite birds.

He wrote a book that was published in 2018 titled, "The Ravenmaster". I recently purchased a copy, and somewhat to my surprise, it was an excellent read... I couldn't put it down and read it in a single sitting.
I was told the Ravens actually have their wings clipped so they can't fly away but it looks like they are flying around quite happily here.
They are clipped. You can see the cut feathers in the video. But they are clipping the secondary flight feathers to limit flight, not prevent it. You clip the primaries if you don't want them gaining altitude, and leave the secondaries. These birds could never take off across the countryside, just short flights, flapping with everything they have. Kinda cheesy to pretend that he's doing his job well if they have to clip the wings. At least the feathers grow back should they get discharged from duty and evicted.

Although it's TRUE that the secondary flight feathers are clipped according to wikipedia the current ravenmaster has clipped less secondary flight feathers than previous ravenmasters in order to give the birds more freedom
Only feathers which prevent long flights are clipped. Occasionally they do leave going to the parks in London. but they usually come back, knowing there is a ready supply of high quality food. If they stayed away long enough their feathers would regrow, and they could go anywhere.
The legend must be based on the plague, ravens eat mice mice carry the disease, thus if the mice where not controlled the disease would spread.
Ravens have a very ancient association with Britain. Even though the warning referenced only goes back 400 year's the association of Ravens and the hill the tower was built on is much older. Tradition has it that Bran the blessed had his head buried in the hill. Bran actually means Raven. Look up Bran the blessed sometime it's very interesting

They are amazing creatures.
Yes they have an incredibly complex society, including a period when the "teenagers" ALL leave to spend a few years in their own group. They also seek out and lead others to food, even when they are not related and even when food is very short. But they do not hold obvious "parliaments" like rooks do.
So we have:
• Chief Mouser
• Ravenmaster
all we need now is the Horse Lord and the Corgi Sargent and we good.
Don't forget the First Sea Lord.
Lets go we should equip them with SA80s and they can defend the tower probably

I had the chance to meet him and check out the enclosure with my family, and the birds are super smart, and the ravenmaster is a really cool guy. In fact, he wrote a bool titled "The Ravenmaster," and gave all of us a copy!

Its confusing for me to require retired warrant officers to be guardians of the Tower of London....... Haven't they been trained in the art of war, and not the art of showmanship and communications?
Tradition, and its about them being disciplined and dedicated as well.... And I think technically they're still service personnel just not active duty
The Tower of London is an active military posting, it’s a tradition dating back to the Norman conquest. The Tower is there to watch the City for signs of treason.
