Matt…. I can’t believe you filmed this. If your wife does see this, we have space for you and your tent in our back garden.
May try this as I have a couple with the same issues. Keep em rolling.

7:53 ... Famous last words, ... I was replacing the in tank fuel gauge set up on my 1966 Chevy Van once, I previously had made an access panel in the vans floor for service. There was this area around the fuel gauge/fuel pickup opening with a lot of dust and dirt ...
I quietly borrowed my wife's Hoover and figured I'd just quickly suck up all the dirt
Well you guessed it, it sucked up gas fumes, and the Vacuum exploded once, a bit ... then again, with more vigor! :(and caught on fire :)
We went out for Hoover shopping and dinner that evening :)

P-O-R is not a word it's acronym that stands for Paint Over Rust. The reason that the kit comes with a rust neutralizer and not remover is because it is designed to stick to rust. It tends to peel off other wise. I've used most of their products with good results.

I have used the POR 15 system before and it works great. The key is to get it dry in between steps. Two thumbs up on bringing back a US Jerry can to full service!!!

Good stuff! You should verify that you didn't seal the air vent. it's the hole on the face where the lid gasket goes. There's a bent tube inside, so it vents when upside down... 👍

Matt: Another great vid. With all this water, you need a GPA.
One thing about jerry can usage, the "wide mouth" gas tanks were adopted, to help fueling with jerry cans, sans Donkey Wedding Tackle.
POR-15 makes great products. I have used their Rust Encapsulator for years. If you prep correctly, no worries.
For cleaning rust inside tanks and cans, put a handful of nuts and bolts inside, then shake vigorously, or let it ride around in the back of a farm truck for a while, flipping occasionally. Some guys have strapped them to paint shakers. Amazing, the tricks people devise.
    Thanks again

      @ek8710 2 года назад

You can also strap the tank to a cement mixer and leave it spinning with nuts and bolts.

I took one of those, strapped it to a tractor wheel after putting a few handfuls of pearock and baled a field of hay. All interior rust was removed. ........ just a thought....... and no harsh chemicals.

Disposable!?! The US lost so many cans in France (3.5 million) they offered a reward to the French schoolchildren for the return of every can they found. About 1 million were returned. Many of those cans might still have contained fuel when they were " lost" / exchanged.

Citric acid can be used as a rust remover. It takes a bit longer to eat away the rust but is far safer to handle (used in candys such as Warheads to make them sour). Can be bought through Amazon and other places as a powder that can be mixed with water. Or mixed with wallpaper paste if you want it to stick to something (then cover it with plastic film).

I just did used this system on a few of my jerry cans and it worked great! I should have let it sit for a few minutes on each side though as it dried - most of it ended up on the bottom.

Great job, Matt. I did a similar job with a US can like that with a 2-component coating called “Tankcure” (for the folks in the Netherlands). This brand also has a solvent for chemical removal of rust which works very well. Especially after shaking the jerrycan with water and sharp shingle inside.

Great vid. Don’t recall mention that water bath (you took that literally) should be HOT. That way the cooler air in the tank will expand, forcing bubbles out any leaks. Works the same for testing metal fuel float from carby. Putting in water colder than temperature inside vessel does the opposite. Sucks liquid into vessel.

Good God! he uses his wife's hairdryer and cooking hob, nicks the cultery to stir the paint and then takes the jerry can into the bath. He is a much, much braver man than me - I would be killed if I did any of that! Be careful of the fumes from POR15 as I found that although it worked really well, if you inhale the fumes it really does give you a very nasty headache.
