    Just seeing you draw in the outlines at the beginning flipped a switch in my head and made me think "how did I not realize this sooner?!". I had been drawing human faces and hands for months and gained a basic understanding of perspective but for some reason drawing landscapes felt foreign to me and It didn't occur to me to use the same observation techniques that I used previously when drawing from reference. This video reminded me that a lot of the fundamentals I learned before apply to all subjects not just one.

    This is awesome!!! I enjoy drawing such things as cliffs, crevasses, rocks, mountains, and waterfalls, but I never have gotten the shading quite right. You've made it so easy to understand, and I'm sure that I can now do a rendering of the limestone cliffs around me here in Missouri. They're not high, sharp cliffs, but are only about 100 feet at the most, and rather blunted on the faces---that is, they look as if they're made of stones stacked one atop the other, miles and miles of horizontal stacked stones. They're also a rather bright orange color---I always thought limestone was white, but it isn't---so are very challenging to color. They aren't just one or two shades of orange, but are everything from a deep beige to a dark burnt orange, with a lot of golden-orange mixed in. Getting the idea across in black and white is also quite a huge challenge, but I'm determined to do it!

    • @PaulPriestleyart
      @PaulPriestleyart  4 года назад +1

      The trick is to train your eye to ignore the colour and concentrate on the tone.If you are creating a drawing you need to look tonally, colour will confuse matters. Remember, a black and white photo can look very realistic yet it contains no colour, it's all about the tone. Good luck.

    This tutorial is such a big help for me. I spend hours walking the eastern coast of Canada taking photos to paint. I have never been able to paint realistic rocks or cliffs. I am now starting to draw the exercises and funny thing…..I can draw rocks…and trees to my satisfaction…….will also see how this applies to acrylics since I have many nice photos. You speak clearly, give the info. and some helpful hints…..Thankyou so much, I am learning and can hardly wait to see my efforts in a full landscape. Just one question? How do we protect our graphite and charcoal drawings from smudging ??

    • @PaulPriestleyart
      @PaulPriestleyart  2 года назад

      Glad you enjoy my videos. To stop smudging rest your hand on a scrap of paper when drawing. If you have finished the drawing spray it with fixative, or cheap hair spray as it is effectively the same thing. Cheers

    Looks like your technique can easily be adapted for pen and ink drawings. That's really one of my issues with learning certain techniques on graphite- most of them can only be applied to graphite.

    • @PaulPriestleyart
      @PaulPriestleyart  7 лет назад

      You can't create the subtlety of tone in pen that you can with graphite. You create tone by use of line with pen as you pointed out from the video

    Dear Paul, thank you for this video. I have few questions:
    1) Instead of using lines, can we do the shading technique (pencil with palm grip) and achieve these effects?
    2) Can we suggest the shape of cliffs and ground with shading technique (similar to how you have done through lines)?
    3) The palm grip shading technique is more closer to painting. What do you think?
    Thank you

    Mmm yeah, but i want to draw a cliff from like the bottom of the page, as if i'm looking over one, not right on the edge though if you get me, around 30 to 40 feet from the edge...I don't know how to make it look like a cliff at all from that angle, because it would just be grass, know what i mean?.

      If you are standing where you suggest you can't see the cliff so you don't need to draw it. Everything apart from where you are standing is going to be very light in tone, that's about it really.

    Neat! How come you don't use the stump or cue tips to smooth out
    the lines?

      Just personal choice, I don't like it to smooth that way it preserves the energy. Happy Christmas Paul

    Sir, pl mention the type of paper used to draw cliffs and crevasses.

      The paper was cartridge paper, but you can use any reasonably good paper. Cheers Paul

    Is there a change in technique when drawing cliffs facing towards you?

      No, I would use the same technique, obviously the angles change.Cheers Paul

    This is a good tutorial, but my version leaves a lot to be desired. The reason we vary the tone is because each different tone represents a rock face reflecting a different amount of light. One thing these tutorials never do is tell me how to determine which rock faces need which tone. Without knowing that, my rocks end up looking bad because they are not all in the correct plane for the amount of light each one has. Some faces end up being in front of other faces, which they cannot possibly do in nature. Paul mentions that rocks further away need to be lighter than those closer to us, which is a good start. But I doubt he's simply filling in different shades (tonal qualities) anywhere he feels like it. His brain is developed enough, and he's practised enough, to know where to apply the correct tones so that all the rocks end up in a valid position in nature.

      No tutorial is going to tell you which rock needs which tone. It's all about looking and understanding that to create depth on a flat surface you need a system. The system, very simply, is that objects get lighter in tone as they recede into the distance. Stand outside and look for the darkest tone you can find in the distance and compare it with the darkest tone you can see nearby. You'll see the furthest dark is much lighter. As an artist you look and apply this idea to your drawing to make it appear to be three dimensional on the flat surface of a sheet of paper.

      @@PaulPriestleyart Yes. I agree with the 'lighter is further' idea. However there seems to be more that I am missing. You alluded to it yourself toward the end of this video when you said:
      "don't just draw any old line. don't shade in any old way. you've got to think about what you're doing. what is this line actually saying? what's it actually doing?"
      I wish tutorials would describe that thought process and how to figure out what the line should be saying/doing. It's not enough to say, "draw the line so it looks right." The question is, how do I know what makes it look right? Especially in this case since this is a drawing from memory/imagination. My version of this drawing seems to have enough contrast (squinting eye trick), but my crevasse looks like a flat wall with a bunch of different colors on it. There's something I am missing with regard to creating depth and space that you seem to know very well, and It seems to me it is more than just the idea of lighter is further/darker is nearer. I would love your insight on my version of this drawing instagram.com/p/CBoZu6_FtfZ/
      Can you point out where I went wrong in my technique with regards to the depth of the crevasse?
      Apologies in advance if this is not an acceptable way to ask for help. :-)

      I've had a quick look at the drawing and there could be more subtle differences between tones of different elements of the drawing. If you want to create three dimensions even objects that are relatively close to each other will have subtle differences in tone, which is missing in parts of the drawing. When I said, "don't just draw any old line. don't shade in any old way. You've got to think about what you're doing. What is this line actually saying? What's it actually doing?" I mean the lines describe the angle, shape and density of the rocks. The line, therefore, tells us something about the structure and position of the rock, where it sits in space in relation to other elements. If lines are drawn almost randomly without much thought and reason they look unconvincing and don't tell us the information the brain needs to construct the image for the viewer.
