  • In this video I straighten the fork tubes from the Yamaha AT-90, Twin Jet 90, H-2. Using a set of "V" blocks or rollers, hydraulic press, and a dial indicator.

    Years ago I was hanging out at my favorite bike shop listening to the owner and another 'old timer' have a conversation out front. A fellow walked up and interrupted the conversation just long enough to explain that he had a bent fork tube. The very experienced owner sighted down the fork tube, gave it a solid whack over a fence post, checked it again for straightness and handed it back. All without stopping his conversation. And no charge for the service! The bike owner just shrugged and walked off to put his bike back together.

    I have fully restored 2 yamaha YL1s completely with plenty of new bearings, seals, chrome and repainted. I keep one in my living room and the other in a huge plastic vacuum bag with a silicone pack in the shed. I think my front forks may be a little bent on one bike because the front wheel will not align at 90 degrees to the handlebars. I have no hydraulic press so will have to take them to a professional fork tube straightener.
    The yamaha YL1 is a 97cc twin 2-stroke which is very rare in the UK. I restored mine in L.A. from 6 or 7 bikes that were advertised in RECYCLER magazine over 30 years ago. Although I bought them for peanuts they are now worth several thousand pounds here in the UK.
    I enjoyed the video and your presentation was excellent. Thanks mate.

      Nice, I really love the old Yamaha twins. I have a couple others that will eventually make to the shop. Just love the sound and the performance of these little bikes. Thanks for hanging out in the shop with me.

      Thanks man, you should be able to accomplish the same thing with a small press and a dial indicator. Just go slow and don't over press anything so you have to press it back the other way. Remember that the metal will need to be pressed a little past straight because it will spring back some. Name of the game is slow.!

    Thanks for showing another use for the hydraulic press Dale. I was impressed by the improvement in those fork tubes.
    Perhaps the previous owner used the back wall of his garage to save money on brake shoes?
    Best wishes, Dean.

    I have straightened much worse back in the day lol ...even so bad they were left with kink swell where they bolted into the triples lol ....was not "right" to do but hey for playbikes they worked and were straightened enough that seals did not leak. forks have always been high bucks to replace so being young on budgets? we just used hydraulic presses and straight edge/ grantite table and worked em till they were more or less straight again...suspension was junk back then anyway. Today there are some really finely machined and carefully engineered forks that actually work amazingly well! Not confident at all one could get away with stone age tactics like back in the day lol I and tell by drum brakes you are working on some crude old tech there....perfect candidate!

    Hi Dale, I'm over in the UK & have a couple of YL1 100cc Twinjets which share a lot of the same parts. Had to straighten the forks on one. After putting it back together it was still off & turned out the lower triple tree had also bent, so thats probably worth checking out on yours seeing as that one tube was in sucha a bad way. Easily managed to get a NOS replacement though for not much cash. Enjoying your vids. Keep up the good work, cheers, Mark. Edit: just started watching another of your vids & saw you already dealt with that.

      @@montana2strokeracer I'm slowly working my way through your old vids when I get chance so I might not be up to speed with some of your progress yet. I did notice when you put the rebuilt forks back on the bike your brake plate locating tang is on the opposite side to where it should be. Hope you spotted that too

      @montana2strokeracer  Год назад

      @@markjones95 Yes Mark of course I noticed when I went to put the wheel on. So, I had to pull the fork tubes out of the triple clamp again, and to add insult to injury I had to unmount the tire and remount it the other way since its directional. I'm a dirt bike guy...the brake hubs are on the other side. Do me a favor.... when you see stuff like that yell a little louder so I can hear you on this side of the pond. I have to watch the old Yamaha twins too; they have the chain on the wrong side too. Man, it's always something! Thanks for hanging out with me in the shop.

      @@montana2strokeracer Hey Dale at the rate you are going I think you'll have it all back together by the time I catch up on your videos, but I'll definitely shout louder if I spot something like that again. Like you say theres always something. On my YL1 the speedo didnt work so I investigated the drive gear, only to find a front wheel had been fitted from an early FS1 50cc. They have the brake on the opposite side, so someone had removed the speedo drive gear from the hub to allow the wheel to be fitted backwards..... Took a bit of time & head scratching to work all that out though

    Hey Dave this is I know what works good on a pair of steel-toed work boots with a plastic bag full of water will swell it to make it big enough for your foot to fit Platt I live in Michigan I've seen where they've put exhaust pipes in the freezer with water and push the dents out maybe you could try that pushing the dent out of a gas tank

    I am Thomas from New York nice to meet you Dale Sweger just wanted to ask a very important question I know it seems quite out of random, but is possible to straighten out my fork tubes? Been searching all over the world for some body to give me the right type answers about size and dimension of my fork tubes that is bent 20 to 30 degrees inward it’s not well worth the head ache and time trying to find new replacement fork tubes at the moment that dont fit my type of motorcycle, just wanna pay the cost of repair but mechanics have no clue if it can be done. Please help I am running out of options here.

    • @montana2strokeracer
      @montana2strokeracer  6 месяцев назад

      Hi Thomas, and it is sure nice to meet you. Not sure if I could save your tubes, and couple important things to say is......once tubes have been bent that far they are no longer safe on the road or trail for that matter. The process of bending them back further fatigue the metal. The best solution is to have a new set made. Forking by Frank in Mississippi can make new ones for you. The last set I had him make cost about 375.00. If you would like me to take a look at them, send me a couple pictures to my email. Thanks again for watching and for subscribing.
