Man, it hurts me to see Starlight like this. A couple times it almost looked like she was going to cry when Discord said Starlight was a disappointment to Twilight. That there shows how close she has become to Twilight. That just the thought of disappointing her closest friend hurts her that deeply.
They pissed me off when they showed Discord like that. Episode is funny but Discord in this episode is like, hey I'm gonna be evil again, that's why I don't like it because they again showed us that Starlight deserves more trust than Discord and this is discrimination.
My opinion is Discord definitely making Starlight feel so guilty and even manipulating her to what Twilight might say if she ever found out of her bringing Discord into this mess.
It seemed what Starlight meant by when she said "I was thinking too much like a Headmare" she meant that she was so focused on trying to run the school like Twilight, that she missed the signs that Discord was feeling left out, and if she'd thought like she would've as a Guidance Counselor, she'll picked that up.
Also, Discord putting a wig that looked like Twilight's mane on Starlight's head was more fitting in this episode then a lot might think. Starlight hates letting Twilight, her friend/ex-teacher, down, and she was driven to not disappoint her. And letting Twi down, or thinking like she did, can make Glimmy feel like she's a failure. Who else have felt the same way about not letting their friend/ex-teacher down, and has been driven to not do it...?
And as for Discord not getting some kind of punishment or something, I'm not even surprised now, since punishments aren't really much of a thing in this show. Most of the time, the character realizes they messed up, apologize, and while they might not always be forgiven on the spot, they'll be forgiven after a short time. But this time, 'ol Discord didn't even apologize, but Starlight did, who was much less in the wrong. I can definitely relate to Discord about feeling left out, but still...I'm calling BS on him not apologizing to poor Starlight after what he made her, and for that matter the students, go through and especially calling her a "incompetent, power-hungry Unicorn". That one was low. I had laughs watching this episode, so I liked it.
Resorting to using something from her past, considering his own, is pretty low. Starlight tries soon hard to distant herself from her past self. It makes me sad to see some bring it up like this. Or the way he kept saying Starlight was being a disappointment to Twilight. The way Starlight looked after those comments (sad and looks like she might cry) was so heart breaking. She has so much love and respect for Twilight that even the thought of it happening hits her hard.
Michelle Pritchett Rainbow Dash and Spike have mentioned it once or twice, but I don't remember the others doing it. "No offense" is more of an EqG thing.
Of course Discord didn't suffer any consequences. Aside from Fluttershy, who's capable of making any consequences stick with him? He's capable of literally rewritting reality.

anyone else immediately realise something was wrong as soon as they got called by the map? The only times they've all been called was when they've had a massive boss to face and at this point in time, there's no one. Also, I was so happy when Starlight blasted at Discord so I didn't have to do it, meanwhile Applegeek was like 'is he okay?' Discord pissed me off so much in this episode Starlight was trying to teach and protect the students while discord was messing it all up, I'm genuinely annoyed at that. I'm also annoyed at Starlight's apology, I understand where she's coming from and why she apologised but I think it should've been Discord who apologised to the entire school.

I think we got a lost opportunity for a really good episode. The way they had Spitfire grouped in with Starlight's close friends Maud and Trixie makes me wonder if the two also developed a friendship off screen. Which made me wish there had been a Starlight /Wonderbolt episode.
In my opinion the rest of the stuff in the episode was pretty good for me to come back and rewatch despite how weird Discord was writen. I love Spike and Starlight interacting with each other and what we did see of the spellvenger hunt was pretty cute.
All episode is ok not totally bad but also not great. I don't like what they did with Discord here. He again is mean jerk, like come on, I don't like when they show Discord like that.

Just throws a temper tantrum if hes not the center of attention. He calls it a 'lesson' but it's more likely he just loves fu**ing with people/ponies.

There's a big difference between Starlight and Discord. Starlight is/was power-hungry. Discord disrupts Harmony. It's still the nature of his existence whether he's good or evil.
ParadoxBrony I think it would be more accurate to say Discord disrupts Order, not Harmony. Order is the actual opposite of Chaos, being control and structure in contrast to the randomness and change of Chaos. Discord's typical actions defy logic and don't follow any system or have any organization, which is the opposite of Order.

ParadoxBrony Disharmony and Chaos are also different things. Notice how he hasn't been referred to as "Spirit of Chaos and Disharmony" since his reformation, only Spirit of Chaos. The Elements have also been used in this show to combat things that are not Chaotic in nature (You could argue for Tirek, but Nightmare Moon and Sombra in particular are basically the total opposite of Chaos). Discord most likely used Disharmony as a title because he was directly opposing Celestia, who wielded the Elements of Harmony, not necessarily because Disharmony and Chaos are one of the same.

Starlight’s emotions being the source of her powerful, magical feats...that is a very interesting thing to point out. It seems like Starlight might be getting some backlash from people due to her so-called “OP magical prowess,” making her seem that her magic transcends alicorn magic and this emotionally driven magic you spoke of does seem legit. In any case, I don’t think Starlight should be faulted for having this kind of package within her magical abilities.
Lil' Sweetie Lil' Sweetie According to what she said in “All Bottled Up,” and I quote: “I’ve always found that magic is tied to my emotions...” So naturally, magic can become very powerful and sometimes unpredictable depending on how the user feels.
Alicorn magic is not really more powerful by default. That's really only the Two sisters. A unicorn can very realisticly reach and surpass Cadence and Twilight's power, if they trained. I just think a pony elevated to Alicorn will never be as powerful as the original deal.
Michael A Burns no kidding. One more reason why Twilight was smart to make Starlight her school's Guidance Counselor. She's not just nice and empathetic enough to help the kids with problems, but as one of the most powerful ponies in Equestria, she's one of the best to protect them if they're in danger. Starlight's the kind of Guidance Counselor I'll want if I had my own school: empathetic AND strong!
Very big problem now. This means the Mane 7 can't really trust the map now. They know Discord can and will mess with the system. They can't really ignore a call either because it might be real. What if during this fake one, a real one was supposed to spring up and they missed it because of Discord's bs. What if by missing this call, they missed the chance to stop a pony from becoming a villian?
Well I think there WAS a problem. Only, this time it wasn't that the Mane 6 needed to be in Place X -- they just needed to NOT be at the school for as long as it took them to go there and back. This was about Starlight and Discord. And... I suppose Starlight had neglected Discord. As had Trixie (she even talked about doing a joint performance with him). Thorax wasn't there-- and possibly didn't ignore Discord, who knows. Oh and Discord WAS teaching Starlight a lesson about not forgetting herself. Something he himself learned in a very hard way with Fluttershy and a tea party. And maybe the school was getting too orderly and needed some chaos?
I think the big problem is they really don't have a deterint to stop Discord from doing stuff like this, outside of the EOH, which I still think are only really effective as long as Discord doesn't take them seriously. His friendship with Fluttershy is a very flimsy thing holding him from going full villian again.
Problem is that the Mane 6 are mostly to blame for this. It should have been a team effort but they shifted most of the work onto Fluttershy. Now the only thing that keeps Discord under control (to some extent) is Fluttershy, if the others had put more effort into it Discord should be caring about his friendship with all of the Mane 6. But except for Fluttershy, Big Mac and Spike, the others mostly seem to tolerate him.
I feel like Starlight blasting him with magic is literally the only way to keep him out of the school and that still didn't work. Spike said, "why didn't you talk to him?" I feel like she was talking to him this whole episode. He put the kids in real danger, he needed to go. Not to mention, he literally had no reason to go after Starlight. She has never done anything wrong to him, and the excuse of oh "discord is being discord" through the episode is no excuse for his behavior. Also him saying he wasn't invited to the school opening, im pretty sure he could've just shown up without an invite
Plus if anypony was to blame for not inviting him to the school, it was the other 6, not Starlight. Though I guess the worst offenders would be Twilight, cause it's her school and she decides who visits. And Fluttershy because being his best friend means she should have at least entertained the thought.
But I would like to commend Starlight for taking the bullet for the other 6 here. Fluttershy might apologize for not including him, but the other 5 most likely wouldn't. This shows Starlight being one of the bigger mare's in the show. And how far she has come.

A good "punishment" for Discord i'll like to have seen happen, would've simply been Starlight telling the Mane 6 all that he did while they were gone. Even if he didn't apologize, that'll been enough! After "Marks For Effort" we know that Twilight has zero tolerance when it comes to somepony messing with her students. Can you imagine how she'll acted if she knew one of her students might've actually gotten hurt, or worse, because of Discord's pranks? I can see that pony just losing it and firing a even bigger banishment spell/Kamehameha then the one Starlight did at Discord!
Starlight pretty much killed Discord, that's what she did, lol. She "banned" his body, but his "ghost" / sprirt/ soul was still able to exist and haunt things.

Yeah, I didn't like the way he treated Starlight here. She's shown nothing but respect for him anytime they were on screen together before this and during the first half of this, something that doesn't happen often. She even enjoyed his antics in Celestial Advice. (She was the only one laughing at what he was doing.) That's more then 5 of the other Main 7 do for him. Heck, she's probably one of the only ones who could really appreciate him. She never met him when he was a full villian (so wouldn't have that clouding her view on him) and the fact she was a villain herself means she can relate to him. But then he turns around and does this to her...
thing is..in discord's eyes..he was never doing anything wrong. Discord is a spirit of chaos. neither good nor evil...whatever works at the moment to further his agenda, even if we find it bad...discord truly has no understanding of how what he did was wrong. Chaotic neutral is a bit rough to deal with. However the best way to defeat an enemy is to make them your friend. That is why discord is more or less forgiven by twilight and the girls. they cannot outright kill/defeat him...so they fix his mistakes, move on and simply love and tolerate him.
Remember back when Discord joined forces with Tirek, much because the mane 6 treated him like shit in general? Keep in mind the amazing bonding moment he had with the mane 6 back then when he realized just how important friendship is and gave Twilight her key. And here we are 4 seasons later ( and possibly more years than that) where he does not even get invited to the opening of the school. Nor is it even apparently mentioned by Fluttershy during their tea time. Starlight, his old "save Equestria buddy" as she herself put it, who was reformed 3 seasons (and years) after him and who actually was more of a threat than him, is essentially already the mane 6`s fuckbuddy and gets trusted with being in charge. On top of that even she ignored him, didn`t invite him, and rejected his ideas ( which actually were good and optional ) And people try to claim he has no reason to be pissed at them…..cute. As for people claiming the students were innocent, they were witnesses to someone who clearly was upset about something and none of them pointed out the painfully obvious. So they were just as guilty as Starlight and the mane 6. And they were not in any real danger. This was not the case even when he was a villain and "evil" so why would it suddenly be now? That Bugbear would likely turn into balloons or something the moment it made contact. It also seems like people forget that Discord is a spirit of pure chaos and that he has to express himself through chaos otherwise he will die .
This episode’s moral should’ve really centered around Discord and how you shouldn’t excuse a friend’s behavior as them just “being them” if it’s obnoxious and hurtful. I get that he felt left out, but he full-on verbally abused Starlight, made her feel useless, and willfully endangered the students multiple times without any show of remorse. I was fully anticipating Fluttershy returning at the end and tearing him a new one. This should’ve been an episode that showed Discord that he needs to put some work into being kind and helpful if he wants anyone other than Fluttershy to truly want him around, which is what he was so upset about in this episode in the first place. Also would’ve been a good idea to have Starlight teach him this and become a good friend of his, in a way that none of the Mane Six other than a Fluttershy have ever tried.
Even though I’m not a fan of Discord here, that didn’t stop me from enjoying the episode itself. Judging from that “summons from the map,” I was expecting that we’d be seeing a side episode with the mane six and what they went through. But, I’m actually glad that turned out to be unimportant to the plot. I really had fun with your reaction, thank you for the laughs!😁

If you actually look closely at their cutiemarks on the map at the start, they look different than usual. Instead of Twilight's being in the centre surrounded by the others, they're in a full circle. Nice touch animators.😉
I'm thinking she meant she was viewing the situation from the wrong perspective. Because, there are times where the answer to resolving a situation or scenario lies in changing the way you're thinking, the way you view it and then to change your methods accordingly. Like when Twilight had to take a step back, acknowledge she couldn't defeat Starlight or fix the situation continuing on as she was, so she changed tactics by getting Starlight to fix it herself. Here, starlight had to stop seeing Discord as a problem to fix and instead see him as her friend and take a second to analyze why he was reacting the way he was. (Not saying whether I agree and not interested in arguing -looking at you other commenters lol)
The lesson of this episode could’ve worked if Discord simply used his magic to get the students to goof off rather than follow Twilight’s plans. This would’ve made Starlight feel like she’s failing Twilight, and she’d try desperately to get everything back on track for the plans, only to eventually realize that she should be doing things her own way and that Discord is trying to help her realize this. Not only would this make Discord seem like far less of a jerk, but it would show him getting involved with the school in a positive way. And it could legitimately bolster Starlight’s apology as she tells Discord that she’s sorry that he hasn’t been involved and that everyone underestimated how well he understood friendship. Heck, it would even support her saying that she needs to think more like a guidance counselor, as she would forget the students’ wants and needs in favor of perfectly following Twilight’s plans. That may be a bit rambling for an episode that came out years ago, but I just desperately wish that this episode had been executed better. It could’ve been great development for Starlight and Discord.

And it’s sad he missed it cuz it was a callback to Princess Spike!! 😂 I thought at first it was the one time he ran her class and they did “O Dragon my dragon” cuz she was talking to the CMCs (or maybe that’s later this season). And it’s even funnier that later the very SAME trees used in that episode come in with a well timed callback (the reference and tree from the same episode in the same episode).
This was a hilarious one and as I know by now that you have watched episode 15, that one was a real punch in the feels for me. Cried during Gallus' reveal as an orphan.

Fun thing about this episode was we finally had an OP character off and got our answer as to who was more OP. In the end Discord turned out to be the most OP. It sure looked like he knew he was going to be blasted after what he said at 15:58 but he was planning on it and didn't care. Starlight ended up apologizing even though Discord was somewhat in the wrong because she didn't have much choice after she realized just how ridiculously OP Discord is. If that blast didn't stop him what would? He seems to have endless backup plans, remember the season 4 premiere. It wasn't about Discord learning anything in this episode, I think the lesson was learned by Starlight that sometimes you just have to bite the bullet with a character as impossible as Dicsord

I know Discord was just being himself, and that's forgivable. However, I couldn't stop myself from finding him a little annoying during this episode and being a little disappointed that there were no consequences for his actions. I think he should've been apologizing to Starlight instead.
One of the things I learned watching this show: don't expect consequences. They don't happen that much so if it happens, great, but the only thing I really expect at this point is for the character to apologize, since they usually do. But even that didn't happen in this episode. Interesting enough, the "Marks For Effort" episode, when Twilight gave that "controversial" non-verbal apology, had the same writer that wrote this episode, so that might be something worth noting.

I hated Discord in this episode, he caused utter chaos and when Starlight put her hoof down, she had to apologize, instead of him realizing that their are certain limits and rules to running a school. And then Discord wanted to complain and cry when Starlight stopped him from causing more destruction. Instead him controlling his actions, I know he's the embodiement of chaos but still. The episode should have went in that direction. He was a jerk in this episode. Pardon my French.
Janelle Northcut I agree with you profoundly. That gave him no excuse to do all those horrible stuff like putting the students’ lives at risk just because he felt left out.
julie martinez that’s the problem, the moral was good, but they way the show addressed the moral wasn’t all that good. If he was feeling left out, he could have at least talked to her instead of doing drastic work and causing havoc to the students and the school. But Both starlight and discord are at fault. Starlight ignored discord which made him feel left out, while discord nearly put everyone at risk.
"Discordant Harmony" proved that Discord CAN open up,, but he just don't like doing it because he's extremely prideful, unless it's to Fluttershy. When Starlight offered to make him vice-headmare, he briefly let down his pride and showed more of his true feelings, but then he tried to play it off.
My headcannon is that before Discord went to Trixie's class, he first tried to mess with Maud's class, and she "rocked" him for it. Then being a reality-warper, that he is, he fixed all the 9,001 bruises that Maud left after she got done with our Lord Of Chaos!
I can honestly see the students asking 'Are you really related to Pinkie Pie?' Constantly. Like that Simpsons episode where the reporters kept asking 'Is this a joke'. 😂
I like to think she took a piece of Chrysallis’ old throne, figured out how it worked, and brought it into class to explain it, and Discord’a magic kept getting sucked into it.

This made me ship Gallus and Silverstream even more. I'm writing a fanfiction for there love story. It takes place on Hearts and Hooves day so I'm hoping it will be done by Valentines day.
I don't think 'head mare' was painted as a bad thing. She meant that she had to think like a guidance counselor in order to solve the problem at hand. And I agree it would have gone smoothly without Discord, but those were the circumstances she faced, and she felt like she hadn't handled it right.
How was it saying being a 'headmare' was bad? All she was saying was she needed to think like a counseler, that's not sayin one is better then the other, just the each job is based on certain thins, and tends to think more about certain aspects. As 'headmare' she was trying to stay in control of things and working on running the school, rather then stopping to think over what was causing Discord to act like this. Neither is better, just meant she was using the wrong tool kit for this issue As to Discord, yeah he could have asked them, but Discord seems to have it in his head that if they really cared about him, they'd ask him first. He seems to have that mix of egotism and yet fragility when it comes to dealing with others. So when not asked, he takes it as an insult because he's worried they might not actually like him, and then upset at feeling that way, and then transfers that anger towards the pony that made him feel that way. As you said, he's not very emotionally mature. As to punishing him.... let's face it, how are you going to do that?
But at the same time, it could backfire and just make him lash out more. that's the issue with him, it's a tightrope walk to do just enough chiding and punishing to make him learn his lesson, but not enough to make him become resentful and even more upset.The only one who can really hold any sway is Fluttershy, since she's really the only one that he hates to disappoint.

Discord might be acting as a disabled child in life metaphorically. By his weird understanding of the world. He might have been thrown out of many gatherings, to being alone most of his life. Making him have magic like this, makes him want to cause trouble. Causing trouble equals pony interactions. Meaning, he thinks this is a good thing. idk, something to think about.
A few things I liked in this episode, mostly in Trixie's class. First being that she was at least willing to place a rule or two down in regards to Discord and his fruit calls, even if it was really just so she could perform her magic show. The other one was also with her and how she did mention that magic was the most important element. I mean heck, she could have easily made something up right then and there, but instead, went with the truth itself. Last but not least, and possibly my favoute thing in the class, Trixie was ready to perform her magic trick... and Ocellus was ready to take notes. Just so adorable that was. Edit: Also Applegeek, I'm afraid you missed the first reference to Princess Spike, but that wasn't not your fault, it was in the audio glitch near the start. Simply Spike said "No thank you, being a princess for Twilight as hard enough" :)
I wish they'd flesh Trixie's character out a bit. She had a lot of potential the first couple of times we saw her, but she seems kind of a joke character now.

I mean starlight is one of the most talented Unicorns we’ve met so far in the franchise, I wouldn’t be surprised if she was a little better than Twilight herself
I've seen this episode a few times, two things about it. One, Starlight is overpowered and two I personally think they should have Sunset as a cameo sub teacher, maybe a lesson on empathy or forgiveness. (Someone please do a fanfic/fimfic of that)

That there shows how close she has become to Twilight. That just the thought of disappointing her closest friend hurts her that deeply.

They pissed me off when they showed Discord like that. Episode is funny but Discord in this episode is like, hey I'm gonna be evil again, that's why I don't like it because they again showed us that Starlight deserves more trust than Discord and this is discrimination.

My opinion is Discord definitely making Starlight feel so guilty and even manipulating her to what Twilight might say if she ever found out of her bringing Discord into this mess.
I really missed these moments between Starlight and Spike. They play off each other so well. We need more episodes with the two of them.

It seemed what Starlight meant by when she said "I was thinking too much like a Headmare" she meant that she was so focused on trying to run the school like Twilight, that she missed the signs that Discord was feeling left out, and if she'd thought like she would've as a Guidance Counselor, she'll picked that up.
Also, Discord putting a wig that looked like Twilight's mane on Starlight's head was more fitting in this episode then a lot might think. Starlight hates letting Twilight, her friend/ex-teacher, down, and she was driven to not disappoint her. And letting Twi down, or thinking like she did, can make Glimmy feel like she's a failure.
Who else have felt the same way about not letting their friend/ex-teacher down, and has been driven to not do it...?
And as for Discord not getting some kind of punishment or something, I'm not even surprised now, since punishments aren't really much of a thing in this show.
Most of the time, the character realizes they messed up, apologize, and while they might not always be forgiven on the spot, they'll be forgiven after a short time. But this time, 'ol Discord didn't even apologize, but Starlight did, who was much less in the wrong.
I can definitely relate to Discord about feeling left out, but still...I'm calling BS on him not apologizing to poor Starlight after what he made her, and for that matter the students, go through and especially calling her a "incompetent, power-hungry Unicorn". That one was low.
I had laughs watching this episode, so I liked it.
Resorting to using something from her past, considering his own, is pretty low.
Starlight tries soon hard to distant herself from her past self. It makes me sad to see some bring it up like this.
Or the way he kept saying Starlight was being a disappointment to Twilight. The way Starlight looked after those comments (sad and looks like she might cry) was so heart breaking. She has so much love and respect for Twilight that even the thought of it happening hits her hard.

Discord pissed me off so much in this episode Starlight was trying to teach and protect the students while discord was messing it all up, I'm genuinely annoyed at that. I'm also annoyed at Starlight's apology, I understand where she's coming from and why she apologised but I think it should've been Discord who apologised to the entire school.

I think we got a lost opportunity for a really good episode. The way they had Spitfire grouped in with Starlight's close friends Maud and Trixie makes me wonder if the two also developed a friendship off screen. Which made me wish there had been a Starlight /Wonderbolt episode.
In my opinion the rest of the stuff in the episode was pretty good for me to come back and rewatch despite how weird Discord was writen. I love Spike and Starlight interacting with each other and what we did see of the spellvenger hunt was pretty cute.

ParadoxBrony Disharmony and Chaos are also different things. Notice how he hasn't been referred to as "Spirit of Chaos and Disharmony" since his reformation, only Spirit of Chaos. The Elements have also been used in this show to combat things that are not Chaotic in nature (You could argue for Tirek, but Nightmare Moon and Sombra in particular are basically the total opposite of Chaos). Discord most likely used Disharmony as a title because he was directly opposing Celestia, who wielded the Elements of Harmony, not necessarily because Disharmony and Chaos are one of the same.

Starlight’s emotions being the source of her powerful, magical feats...that is a very interesting thing to point out. It seems like Starlight might be getting some backlash from people due to her so-called “OP magical prowess,” making her seem that her magic transcends alicorn magic and this emotionally driven magic you spoke of does seem legit. In any case, I don’t think Starlight should be faulted for having this kind of package within her magical abilities.

Lil' Sweetie Lil' Sweetie According to what she said in “All Bottled Up,” and I quote: “I’ve always found that magic is tied to my emotions...” So naturally, magic can become very powerful and sometimes unpredictable depending on how the user feels.
Alicorn magic is not really more powerful by default. That's really only the Two sisters. A unicorn can very realisticly reach and surpass Cadence and Twilight's power, if they trained.
I just think a pony elevated to Alicorn will never be as powerful as the original deal.

My mind was blown when I saw this episode. There is nothing Discord can't do and I loved all the nods and cameos.
Very big problem now. This means the Mane 7 can't really trust the map now. They know Discord can and will mess with the system. They can't really ignore a call either because it might be real. What if during this fake one, a real one was supposed to spring up and they missed it because of Discord's bs. What if by missing this call, they missed the chance to stop a pony from becoming a villian?
But what if Discord corrects that little difference? Problem still stands.
Well I think there WAS a problem. Only, this time it wasn't that the Mane 6 needed to be in Place X -- they just needed to NOT be at the school for as long as it took them to go there and back. This was about Starlight and Discord. And... I suppose Starlight had neglected Discord. As had Trixie (she even talked about doing a joint performance with him). Thorax wasn't there-- and possibly didn't ignore Discord, who knows.
Oh and Discord WAS teaching Starlight a lesson about not forgetting herself. Something he himself learned in a very hard way with Fluttershy and a tea party. And maybe the school was getting too orderly and needed some chaos?
I think the big problem is they really don't have a deterint to stop Discord from doing stuff like this, outside of the EOH, which I still think are only really effective as long as Discord doesn't take them seriously.
His friendship with Fluttershy is a very flimsy thing holding him from going full villian again.
Problem is that the Mane 6 are mostly to blame for this. It should have been a team effort but they shifted most of the work onto Fluttershy. Now the only thing that keeps Discord under control (to some extent) is Fluttershy, if the others had put more effort into it Discord should be caring about his friendship with all of the Mane 6. But except for Fluttershy, Big Mac and Spike, the others mostly seem to tolerate him.

I feel like Starlight blasting him with magic is literally the only way to keep him out of the school and that still didn't work. Spike said, "why didn't you talk to him?" I feel like she was talking to him this whole episode. He put the kids in real danger, he needed to go. Not to mention, he literally had no reason to go after Starlight. She has never done anything wrong to him, and the excuse of oh "discord is being discord" through the episode is no excuse for his behavior.

Plus if anypony was to blame for not inviting him to the school, it was the other 6, not Starlight. Though I guess the worst offenders would be Twilight, cause it's her school and she decides who visits. And Fluttershy because being his best friend means she should have at least entertained the thought.
But I would like to commend Starlight for taking the bullet for the other 6 here. Fluttershy might apologize for not including him, but the other 5 most likely wouldn't. This shows Starlight being one of the bigger mare's in the show. And how far she has come.

A good "punishment" for Discord i'll like to have seen happen, would've simply been Starlight telling the Mane 6 all that he did while they were gone. Even if he didn't apologize, that'll been enough!
After "Marks For Effort" we know that Twilight has zero tolerance when it comes to somepony messing with her students. Starlight pretty much killed Discord, that's what she did, lol.
She "banned" his body, but his "ghost" / sprirt/ soul was still able to exist and haunt things.
That reaction was priceless! 16:06 I'm sure alot of us had a similar reaction to seeing Starlight obliterate the Spirit of Chaos off the school grounds.
Yeah, I didn't like the way he treated Starlight here. She's shown nothing but respect for him anytime they were on screen together before this and during the first half of this, something that doesn't happen often. She even enjoyed his antics in Celestial Advice. (She was the only one laughing at what he was doing.) That's more then 5 of the other Main 7 do for him.
Heck, she's probably one of the only ones who could really appreciate him. She never met him when he was a full villian (so wouldn't have that clouding her view on him) and the fact she was a villain herself means she can relate to him.
But then he turns around and does this to her...
thing is..in discord's eyes..he was never doing anything wrong. Discord is a spirit of chaos. neither good nor evil...whatever works at the moment to further his agenda, even if we find it bad...discord truly has no understanding of how what he did was wrong. Chaotic neutral is a bit rough to deal with. However the best way to defeat an enemy is to make them your friend. That is why discord is more or less forgiven by twilight and the girls. they cannot outright kill/defeat him...so they fix his mistakes, move on and simply love and tolerate him.
Remember back when Discord joined forces with Tirek, much because the mane 6 treated him like shit in general? Keep in mind the amazing bonding moment he had with the mane 6 back then when he realized just how important friendship is and gave Twilight her key. And here we are 4 seasons later ( and possibly more years than that) where he does not even get invited to the opening of the school. Nor is it even apparently mentioned by Fluttershy during their tea time. Starlight, his old "save Equestria buddy" as she herself put it, who was reformed 3 seasons (and years) after him and who actually was more of a threat than him, is essentially already the mane 6`s fuckbuddy and gets trusted with being in charge. On top of that even she ignored him, didn`t invite him, and rejected his ideas ( which actually were good and optional ) And people try to claim he has no reason to be pissed at them…..cute.
As for people claiming the students were innocent, they were witnesses to someone who clearly was upset about something and none of them pointed out the painfully obvious. So they were just as guilty as Starlight and the mane 6. And they were not in any real danger. This was not the case even when he was a villain and "evil" so why would it suddenly be now? That Bugbear would likely turn into balloons or something the moment it made contact.
It also seems like people forget that Discord is a spirit of pure chaos and that he has to express himself through chaos otherwise he will die .
They ruined Discord here a bit but it was funny.

This episode’s moral should’ve really centered around Discord and how you shouldn’t excuse a friend’s behavior as them just “being them” if it’s obnoxious and hurtful. I get that he felt left out, but he full-on verbally abused Starlight, made her feel useless, and willfully endangered the students multiple times without any show of remorse. I was fully anticipating Fluttershy returning at the end and tearing him a new one.
This should’ve been an episode that showed Discord that he needs to put some work into being kind and helpful if he wants anyone other than Fluttershy to truly want him around, which is what he was so upset about in this episode in the first place.
Also would’ve been a good idea to have Starlight teach him this and become a good friend of his, in a way that none of the Mane Six other than a Fluttershy have ever tried.

Even though I’m not a fan of Discord here, that didn’t stop me from enjoying the episode itself. Judging from that “summons from the map,” I was expecting that we’d be seeing a side episode with the mane six and what they went through. But, I’m actually glad that turned out to be unimportant to the plot. I really had fun with your reaction, thank you for the laughs!😁

If you actually look closely at their cutiemarks on the map at the start, they look different than usual. Instead of Twilight's being in the centre surrounded by the others, they're in a full circle.

starlight is SERIOUSLY overpowered. Imagine that beam combined with the magic of the princesses!
I'm thinking she meant she was viewing the situation from the wrong perspective. Because, there are times where the answer to resolving a situation or scenario lies in changing the way you're thinking, the way you view it and then to change your methods accordingly. Like when Twilight had to take a step back, acknowledge she couldn't defeat Starlight or fix the situation continuing on as she was, so she changed tactics by getting Starlight to fix it herself. Here, starlight had to stop seeing Discord as a problem to fix and instead see him as her friend and take a second to analyze why he was reacting the way he was. (Not saying whether I agree and not interested in arguing -looking at you other commenters lol)
The lesson of this episode could’ve worked if Discord simply used his magic to get the students to goof off rather than follow Twilight’s plans. This would’ve made Starlight feel like she’s failing Twilight, and she’d try desperately to get everything back on track for the plans, only to eventually realize that she should be doing things her own way and that Discord is trying to help her realize this.
Not only would this make Discord seem like far less of a jerk, but it would show him getting involved with the school in a positive way. And it could legitimately bolster Starlight’s apology as she tells Discord that she’s sorry that he hasn’t been involved and that everyone underestimated how well he understood friendship. Heck, it would even support her saying that she needs to think more like a guidance counselor, as she would forget the students’ wants and needs in favor of perfectly following Twilight’s plans.
That may be a bit rambling for an episode that came out years ago, but I just desperately wish that this episode had been executed better. It could’ve been great development for Starlight and Discord.

Fun thing about this episode was we finally had an OP character off and got our answer as to who was more OP. In the end Discord turned out to be the most OP. It sure looked like he knew he was going to be blasted after what he said at 15:58 but he was planning on it and didn't care. Starlight ended up apologizing even though Discord was somewhat in the wrong because she didn't have much choice after she realized just how ridiculously OP Discord is. If that blast didn't stop him what would? He seems to have endless backup plans, remember the season 4 premiere. It wasn't about Discord learning anything in this episode, I think the lesson was learned by Starlight that sometimes you just have to bite the bullet with a character as impossible as Dicsord

I know Discord was just being himself, and that's forgivable. However, I couldn't stop myself from finding him a little annoying during this episode and being a little disappointed that there were no consequences for his actions. I think he should've been apologizing to Starlight instead.

One of the things I learned watching this show: don't expect consequences. They don't happen that much so if it happens, great, but the only thing I really expect at this point is for the character to apologize, since they usually do. But even that didn't happen in this episode.
Interesting enough, the "Marks For Effort" episode, when Twilight gave that "controversial" non-verbal apology, had the same writer that wrote this episode, so that might be something worth noting.

And then Discord wanted to complain and cry when Starlight stopped him from causing more destruction. Instead him controlling his actions, I know he's the embodiement of chaos but still. The episode should have went in that direction. He was a jerk in this episode. Pardon my French.

julie martinez that’s the problem, the moral was good, but they way the show addressed the moral wasn’t all that good. If he was feeling left out, he could have at least talked to her instead of doing drastic work and causing havoc to the students and the school. But Both starlight and discord are at fault. Starlight ignored discord which made him feel left out, while discord nearly put everyone at risk.

How was it saying being a 'headmare' was bad? All she was saying was she needed to think like a counseler, that's not sayin one is better then the other, just the each job is based on certain thins, and tends to think more about certain aspects. As 'headmare' she was trying to stay in control of things and working on running the school, rather then stopping to think over what was causing Discord to act like this. Neither is better, just meant she was using the wrong tool kit for this issue
As to Discord, yeah he could have asked them, but Discord seems to have it in his head that if they really cared about him, they'd ask him first. He seems to have that mix of egotism and yet fragility when it comes to dealing with others. So when not asked, he takes it as an insult because he's worried they might not actually like him, and then upset at feeling that way, and then transfers that anger towards the pony that made him feel that way. As you said, he's not very emotionally mature. As to punishing him.... let's face it, how are you going to do that?
But at the same time, it could backfire and just make him lash out more. that's the issue with him, it's a tightrope walk to do just enough chiding and punishing to make him learn his lesson, but not enough to make him become resentful and even more upset.The only one who can really hold any sway is Fluttershy, since she's really the only one that he hates to disappoint.

Discord might be acting as a disabled child in life metaphorically. By his weird understanding of the world. He might have been thrown out of many gatherings, to being alone most of his life. Making him have magic like this, makes him want to cause trouble. Causing trouble equals pony interactions. Meaning, he thinks this is a good thing.

A few things I liked in this episode, mostly in Trixie's class. First being that she was at least willing to place a rule or two down in regards to Discord and his fruit calls, even if it was really just so she could perform her magic show. The other one was also with her and how she did mention that magic was the most important element. I mean heck, she could have easily made something up right then and there, but instead, went with the truth itself.
Last but not least, and possibly my favoute thing in the class, Trixie was ready to perform her magic trick... and Ocellus was ready to take notes. Just so adorable that was.
Edit: Also Applegeek, I'm afraid you missed the first reference to Princess Spike, but that wasn't not your fault, it was in the audio glitch near the start. Simply Spike said "No thank you, being a princess for Twilight as hard enough" :)

Overall, I'm glad we're seeing more of the school, Starlight and the Young 6 - as was promised. But I agree the moral was messed up a little bit. Inclusion is important, and Discord had every right to feel the way he did. But he definitely went too far here. I mean, endangering the students' lives and sending the Mane 6 on a fake emergency?! That's low even for the Lord of Chaos. Regardless, it's great to have the season back on track and I look forward to the rest of it.

Starlight is strong in raw power, but she has very little technique or variety in her catalogue. It’s why she mainly just teleports and fires blasts.

I've seen this episode a few times, two things about it. One, Starlight is overpowered and two I personally think they should have Sunset as a cameo sub teacher, maybe a lesson on empathy or forgiveness. (Someone please do a fanfic/fimfic of that)
