5/5: The Janson piece was the easiest for me to identify. The hardest was John Severin until the second panel was revealed. This is a fun game, you guys ought to more of these.
Something about the way Ditko tries to add layers of depth to his compositions also feels very distinctive. Having that piece of building in the foreground to highlight how far the policemen are feels very Ditkoish.
That was great fun, and really worth doing again. You should really look into John Severin, he was an amazing artist that doesn’t get enough recognition, I think. His work on King Kull is really strong and should receive a wider attention.
Great game guys!! I had Janson wrong - tried to overthink it and came up with Gray Morrow and the Severin art - my first guess was also Heath, he does much more realistic faces than John S so wouldn't be surprised if he was in on the inks along with a deep cut - Yong Montano.
I would have never guessed Janson. I thought it was very similar to Gray Morrow, because his art is typically very light, thin lines; yet, the musculature was beefier than Morrow's stuff. Severin was clear once the figures were shown. Jim did a heck of a job I.D.ing those panels--impressive!
Please please please keep doing this type of video. We had a quiz like this at a recent comic book meetup. 24 different batman panels or partials and we had to guess which artist it was. I got 19. Another dude got 22!
Absolutely fun episode! And looks like watching nearly five years of daily kayfabe videos has trained our eyes on noticing the stylistic tics of many pencillers and inkers.
That was a ton of fun, man. My guesses were, in order: (1) Leach, (2) Ditko, (3) Miller/Janson, (4) Byrne and (5) Gibbons. I hope you guys can do this again!
Fun episode guys! Seth and used to play a game where we'd look in the handle opening of a long box and guess the title, issue#, artist of the 1st book in the box, good times
I love this game! ***SPOILERS*** I got the Colan, I didn’t get the Ditko right away, but once Jim said “Ditko” I was a lock, I guessed Frank Miller for the Janson (I’m so used to seeing Janson’s finishes over Miller I have trouble separating their styles), I got the Byrne, I missed the Severin, although I did see the Kubert influence you were talking about. More, please!
Great fun guys, good choices Ed and I loved Jimmy's process through all the possibles, it all made sense. I'm just glad I knew the names of everyone shown, but I surprised myself getting Severin on the first panel! I wasn't certain at all mind and Veitch was a great call. To my shame I struck out on the first Ditko, should have got the figures, but those untidy curb-sides really threw me. Good stuff chaps. Looking forward to more .. that I won't get in a month of Sundays!
this is RAD! Super fun way to take a look at what makes different artists tick. Great idea! 🤘(Love Jim's idea of expanding it to colorists as well) 🔥✒️🖤🖋🔥
This was super fun! I am nowhere near good enough to make guesses that accurate, but I was pleased that I WAS able to instantly agree with Jim's guess and could see it as soon as I heard a name. =oD (Except for the war comic where I just don't have experience with those artists.)
The only one I didn’t know was Janson! Colan is distinctive angle shot with speed lines! Ditko hands, the right fist and the clothing! Severin with the people shot plus references to the grave scene! Almost got me with Heath bit, both men do amazing detail work and over the years never phoned it in! Great 👍 pics,Ed! And Jimmy excellent observations! I bought all these comics either off the spinner rack (Ditko reprint) or the comic shop! In the 70’s, Rich Buckler used to swipe/homage Kirby 60’s FF and with especially with Joe Sinnott embellishment would pull it off! 3 quarter face views are also a giveaway to an artist!!🎯Keep reading and making comix!
Well, that was fun. Got them all, although I couldn’t identify Janson as penciller and I thought Austin was inker on Byrne. So half credit on those? I remember as a kid, a friend of mine couldn’t differentiate between artists. I thought it was so strange. I’ve always been able to identify an artist’s work pretty easily. Inkers are much harder for me than pencillers unless they have a very unique style like Janson or Austin. And guys that use a house style like Pollard or Buckler are sometimes hard to pick out. Let’s do this again soon.
Great fun! I enjoyed playing along with this and managed to get them all right, although I was convinced it was Terry Austin inking the Byrne panel and the last example first led me to think it was Billy the Sink from the graveyard panel then when you revealed the figures it led me to John Severin but that last closeup face panel made me doubt myself I considered it could have been Russ Heath.
This was great. I got Severin on my own on the second panel. I couldn't tell you why. I said it out loud to myself a couple of seconds before Jim did. I would have probably gotten Gene Colan and Ditko on my own too, but Jim got there first both times.
**SPOILERS** The Byrne hatching was a dead giveaway for me, I don't know of anyone who does hatching just like that. The first Ditko felt a bit too "polished" but the second was easy even if I didn't actually recognize the specific panel :).
I was stumped on the Superman panel ( I was sure it was JLGL pencils) The war comic had me flip-flopping between those two artists Jim suggested, but I guessed incorrectly. Very cool and creative episode. Please keep this series going!
I got em' all right. Including John Severin. But I'm a big Severin fan. Also Love Klaus Janson's work. Underrated artist and in my humble opinion the greatest inker ever. Keep up the great work guys!
Spoilers: I got Ditko and Byrne on first slide, guessed Severin on second slide, but then reversed and thought 'not sure but def not Severin' when last slide was shown. 2/5 :( Guessed Neal Adams for Janson but I've never read solo Janson, guessed John Buscema for Colan.
holy shit I got Severin from the first panel, probably because he is one of the few crosshatchy old timers from that era that I know, not familiar with Russ Heath

That was a very fun exercise in art styles! Definitely do this again but of course put Ed on the spot!

Fun episode! Man, I thought the John Byrne one was Art Adams. The Building had some Gumby vibes. Well done, Jim Rugg! Please do more vids like this.
Fun video idea! I enjoyed the process talk.
The posture of the center character in the second one made me think it was Ditko too.
Absolutely fun episode! And looks like watching nearly five years of daily kayfabe videos has trained our eyes on noticing the stylistic tics of many pencillers and inkers.
I vote you guys play this game again!

so much fun! - only got Ditko (the sleeve and the hands) and was way off for everyone else lol
More of this game, please! Loved it!

Love this gimmick. I got 3 (3.5?): Colan, Byrne, and Severin, and Ditko on the second panel.

This was fun!! More more!!
I love Severin and it got him immediately as well as Ditko. Gene I had no idea of. I guessed Sienkiewicz for Jansen. This was fun.
Gene Colan was my second guess on the first one. I got the John Byrne in one. Blurted it out before Jim did. Hah. This is fun

It was the third panel--the one with the figures. I did *not* get it on two.
Love this idea

4/5 love this game!
Rugg is a goat at this game dang!
4/5: Loved this segment! More please...challenges the old geek brain of mine!!
ooooh fun, let's go. I don't think I will do great, but I'm gonna learn a bunch for sure!!
Nice, I got em all and want round two!
I got em' all right. Including John Severin. But I'm a big Severin fan. Also Love Klaus Janson's work. Underrated artist and in my humble opinion the greatest inker ever. Keep up the great work guys!
Super fun!
I got Ditko and Severin, missed the others
I think the era of the comic's creation is most evident. But the Byrne piece looked older to me than it was, I must admit.
Very fun! 3 out of 5 for me. More please!
Please review starstruck mini series drawn by Mike Kaluta 🙏🙏🙏
i didnt do as good as Jim lol, but liking this start to 2024... guess the artist and marvel comics month 1 both good videos
This is fun
good game keep it up
the third one i knew pencils and inks and issue the others i was clueless
Spoilers: I got Ditko and Byrne on first slide, guessed Severin on second slide, but then reversed and thought 'not sure but def not Severin' when last slide was shown. 2/5 :( Guessed Neal Adams for Janson but I've never read solo Janson, guessed John Buscema for Colan.

I thought this was a very fun game, though I didn't do too well.
most likely better than i did - 1/5 lol
Fun episode, flip the roles next time!
🔥💙🔥 Severin. 👍
