RIP Ed. 💔 This is one of my favourite Kayfabe videos. Thank you for your generosity of insight and unrelenting enthusiasm for other artist's work.
I used to work at a copy shop in Chicago where Clowes would occasionally bring in a few original comic pages for me to copy to use for his color guides. Seeing you flip through this book reminds me of just how amazing his stuff was to see up close and personal. Good stuff, fellas!
I have been on a backlog watching binge ever since Ed’s passing and I’m still so impressed by everything I learn . If you came late to game, never fear there a wealth of great information that all on the record.
Had to hit 'full screen' for this one
This is one I'll be watching on my TV later on.
Had to hit "add to cart" for this one.
I had a great bit of creativity while working on my comics today and then got excited by this!
I just bought this book from my local comic shop. I recently read Ghost World and Rusty Brown. Thank you all for the work you do on this channel because you have tuned me into books that I previously didn't know about and have enjoyed immensely.
It’s 5:45 in the morning and I’ve been checking to see when this is gonna get posted. :)
Excited to watch.
There was a special red marker the rubylith folks made so you could fill in small areas or even draw right on the same acetate as the rubylith film; working for color used to be like building construction.
There is a special red tape that you put on the film before you burn the plate to get rid of the lines around the pasted text in the word balloons.
I had printing class in high school. Ran presses, shot film. Used Photoshop 1.
Same here. Rubylith, stats, pasteup. First gen Photoshop. We're like wainwrights now, virtually useless.
Late to the party but great video and love the Clowes appreciation. He's the best.
My copy is coming 48 hours from now. I got one for 200 bucks, which is a decent price! Can't wait to own it!
Ed, on your west coast tour signing for your artists edition, you need to stop by Oakland, CA and do a live interview with Clowes. Get Fanta to pay for Jim to come.
Phew - just finished watching it. I need a cigarette after that. Amazing analysis, I am “not so patiently” awaiting my copy.
thank you guys, this book costs like a month of rent here in são paulo.
This was refreshing. Thanks for the deep dive, guys!
Absolutely drooling over this book. Dan Clowes is in my mini-pantheon of comic book heroes / creators / influences. I feel like I absolutely LIVED "Art School Confidential", basically studied that piece and could relate to Clowes' biting tone all throughout his work. Clowes, Chaykin, Fred Hembeck, Jack Kirby, Kaz, Bill Griffith, Robt Williams... Keep up the great work, guys!
Top-notch episode guys! This was just like hanging out with some artist friends and diving into this book. Really dig all the shop-talk when it comes to techniques so keep that stuff coming.
My two absolute favorite RUclipsrs ❤ Love from Canada, and thank you for helping me return to comic book art after twenty years. Your knowledge is vast and I love your analysis.
Please do reviews of all the Artist Edition books that have been released thus far!
47:45 Jim almost revealed his secret Grand Design!!!
Jabba haha good catch :) ... so it’s a comic with tempo and perhaps incorporating Kirby crackle. :)
Lol writing from the future (2022) turns out it was… Hulk: Grand Design!
Oh, definitely one of my fave indie cartoonists. I have every original Eight Ball comics. The EC artist Reed Crandall artists edition book is huge! I have to look at it on the floor. I just love these books!
I don't know why, but every time you guys lean in to get a closer look at things, it just makes me chuckle. Probably because it really shows how fucking big that book is lol
I have the artist edition of Alien, the illustrated edition from Archie Goodwin en Walter Simonson and it's fascinating to see artwork at that size.
'Art school confidential' is printed in black and white with gray tones in 'eightball' #7 and is reprinted in color in editor ken parille's 'the daniel clowse reader'. Sadly, at a greatly reduced size.
I saw the clowse exhibit that the billy ireland (might've been the wexner center) had some time ago (i couldn't locate the flier just now) and i remember the originals being very large. I think larger than that book. You guys should do a Billy ireland episode.
Damn!!!! You guys are on fire with these vids!!!!!!!
they dont only sell strathmore 500 as big sheets, you can buy strathmore 500 comic sheets in 11x17 'sequential' packs in 3 different surface finishes for cheaper than cutting down big sheets and none of it has watermark stamps. looks like right now you can get 24 sheets of plate for around $35, and 24 sheets of vellum for $26.
NOOO now I'll have to spend the rest of my days trying to get this book, as if I wasn't sweating enough trying to get one of Ed's Hip hop family tree set 1983-1985... I want to cry
This is one amazing Artist Edition. I have to pick this up.
FYI - printing the inside of the slipcase was done on some CD boxsets as far back as the 90s, i believe (maybe early 2000s) - the Miles Davis _On the Corner Sessions_ box (2007) has printing inside the slip case and was, I'm pretty sure, not the first time I'd seen that. Also, some DVD/Blu-ray sets (Criterion maybe?) did this early on.
Incredible. I don't appreciate Clowes as much as I should What an artist and storyteller
I've watched this while looking at the copy i have maybe 5-6 times now. This Artists Edition is that amazing or maybe im just slowly going insane
This was a fascinating technical review btw!
Wow. Thank you guys. That was a fucking hoot!
Another awesome video! Jim, would you consider doing a little demo on the french curve? It’s a tool I got about a year ago and I’m still insure about how to utilize it.
I've added it to my list. - Jim
@@CartoonistKayfabe The stars must be aligning, because I've heard French Curve references in three CK vids today. Pressure's on, Jim! 😉
I think I want a follow-up to this video where you go back over after having the book for a year and a half. I’d love to hear what you have to say with more insight over time.
Don't think they're having a problem selling the book, just got my mail and Fantagraphics sent me a letter saying it's backordered now. "Reason: Out of Stock" Granted I think I ordered way late for something like this, but at the time there was no indication it would run out. Thanks for putting this up! Now that I'm going to have to wait awhile for my copy.
@Jim - I love Wilson. Not only does it work as a great character piece, but it’s also one of the funniest comics I’ve ever read . It’s akin to amazing stand-up comedy wit it’s setups and beats. Clowes is friends with a lot of standup comedians and I wonder if he’s had influence.
been an artist all my life, never paid attention to comics to speak of.. thanks for opening my eyes to the techniques and styles here 😁😁
"..dinner at Lorenzo Mattoti's place" I have never been more jealous in my entire life, no joke.
Watching this vid everyday til there’s a shoot interview with Clowes to keep me goin
What is "that comic art book" or "artist's studios" or "the monograph" book(s) that Jim mentions around 8:30 ?
In The Studio - by Todd Hignite. It's a collection of photos and texts from from different cartoonists' studios - including Dan Clowes, Art Spiegelman, Jaime Hernandez, Panter, Crumb, Charles Burns, Seth, Ware, and Brunetti. Some of them appeared in Comic Art magazine. It's a phenomenal book. The Clowes' studio visit is the first time I became aware of Ken Landgraf's work. - Jim
@@CartoonistKayfabe Cool, I'll check that out!
This. Is. AMAZING.
I love you, guys. Who else would do a page by page commentary video on this book?
Have you guys ever interviewed or reviewed work of CHRIS WARE????
If you haven't seen it already:

This is cartoonist niirvana! 🙌
1:10:11 what does "kayfabe" mean? Like fabrication or hiding technique?
Worth every single penny
100% a MUST-BUY!!!!! :D
"Jethro Tull" hahahahahaaaaa
I try not to be a jealous person, damn I'm jealous right now. That is one beautiful book.
When we getting a reprint of complete eightball?
2015
This looks wild.
so dope
3:00 either Jim reveals his tiny hands or that book really is that big.
The book is really that big.
why do some artists draw so large?
He has Nancy strips. Like all of them. :)
THISIS a weird thing to be so ..... well anyways. You guys are definitely some weirdos lol
