After 33 years at KLM it is time for retirement.
Filmed with a GoPro Hero 2
And outside images with thanks to the KLPD Schiphol, police helicopters, who took the time to take some footage aswell!

Coming back after nearly 9 years. Back in the days looking this video as a 14 year old wanting to become an airline pilot. Now 9 years later - type rated on the Airbus A320 as a First Officer. Thank you so much for this inspiring video to never let go of this beautiful job!

Woah, I'm very happy that you achieved your goal. For myself it will start now, I hope to be at the KLM flight academy in 6 years.
I was an MD-11 flight test engineer in YUMA Arizona and was privileged to be on the very first training flight with the KLM pilots.
Five years later I helped deliver one of MartinAirs MD-11 to Mr. Martin himself, and was asked to help his flight crews in the capacity of flight engineer for 4 months.
I learned a lot about what it meant to be part of a flight crew.
I've seen a few pilot retirements in my long career but I've never seen the CAPTAINS expression captured in the cockpit ,and I just want to say, screw the Gold watch! I'll take the water cannons instead! What a Great way to remember your retirement. I Like that smile on his face...it tells the story. Great video!

I thought about whether I should actually state that I knew this was not the last KLM MD11 flight knowing I would get this sort of comment. Yes, I know you folks pretty well.
I had originally thought it was based on what someone said, then watched it and realized it was not. I felt I should comment anyway to congratulate the captain but then I thought it would be weird to say congrats on a great career to the captain without mentioning the latest about how the KLM MD11 is being phased out. Which is why I wrote the comment in the way I did. You may notice that if you read the comment a little more carefully. I did not say that the retirement of the MD11 and this man's last flight were on the same day.... ;)

I have flown in the past on this air craft, many times to Brazil. It is a wonderful piece of avionics. The Captain looked quite sad knowing it's all coming to an end, for himself and the plane. Thank you SteVe for sharing this great vid. :}

As I understand Dutch this captain have spend 35 years flying at KLM and all the colleagues from KLM and from airport Schiphol especially manager of the airport are grateful for his job and wish him all the best in future life - retirement.

I got goosebumps at the water cannon salute! Very sad to see these MD-11s go but also proud to see this bird respected on her last flight into Amsterdam!

@@jslfcs6655it was also the last revenue passenger flight for the MD-11 as an airframe, only freighters left after that flight. They both retired that day

i just wounder why she looked like she is in good shape i worked on planes in the 70s that tail fen was to small for that plane but the md11 was a great plane

Vanochtend is voor het laatst officieel door de KLM gevlogen met de MD11, erg jammer. Vanaf nu zullen er nog een aantal gebruikt worden voor Cargo en nog een aantal voor rondvluchten. Ik heb deze video echt al ruim 40 keer gekeken, zo mooi gemaakt met die muziek ook. Bedankt voor deze video!
what a graceful workhorse the DC10/MD11 was. along with the 727 and 747, one of the best looking a/c ever designed.

The MD-11 was so ahead of its time! Magnificent bird, a true workhorse. Those LSAS systems worked like a charm. The feeling of flying this thing is like a knife slicing through butter.
Look at those comically large cockpit windows. Such a beautiful plane, a joy to fly on sim too

It must have been an immensely proud moment for these pilots to put this aircraft to bed in such a way, great work but very sad at the same time. The legend that is the mighty MD-11!

I got to do a round trip once on a MD-11 back in the Martinair days from Oakland California to Amsterdam in 1997. Loved the experience and was hoping to try to get some more flights in but I noticed more and more airlines started taking them out of their fleets. This and the DC-10 series were very unique and will be missed greatly.
We will miss the tail engine.

The last flight with a MD-11 pax will be on 23 october2014. Last flight will me from Montreal to Amsterdam and after that... sadly enough they wil go to the desert :'(

KLM is phasing out the last of the PAX MD11's half 2014
and this is a petition to keep one MD11 and open it for visitation, like the 747 at the "Aviodrome"

Now you are not flying anymore but some MD-11 pilots are younger than you what is going to happen to them?
Félix Maltchinski The other pilots will get retrained to fly on other types within KLM, either intercontinental (777/747/330) or the Europe/cityhopper (737/E190)..
And by that time I wouldn't be surprised if some maybe get training for the 787, since KLM still has a few of those on order.

KLM will get a few of them, also there are multiple confirmed orders of the new a350, dunno which 350 cause there are 3 versions of it, small, medium and large(actually that's the rival of the 787, and yet KLM will get both of them)

the md - 11 is always going to be a legend , let alone a vid of landing it from the cockpit , , . ... . hence the interest you mention ,
In dit filmpje gaat de piloot met pensioen, het ging hierin niet om het vliegtuig. Maar uiteraard gaat vandaag zondag 11 januari 2015 ook de laatste naar haar rustplaats worden overgevlogen in Carlifornia (Mojave Aircraft en Space Center) om daar van haar verdiende pensioen te genieten. KLM wilde graag een toestel bewaren; maar er zijn volgens een woordvoerder van communicatie al 3 grote vliegtuigen geschonken. 2x Fokker 100 en een Boeing 747, op Aviodrome was blijkbaar geen plaats meer vrij. Helaas!
It's just soo sad.
To be honest this aircraft isn't my favourite, but it's my 3rd favourite aircraft. It might not be as majestic as some others and on first look one might think it's a bit chubby but it actually is one of the most important aircraft in aviation history. It has flown distances one never thought it would during the time it took off in the air. It has witnessed times most of us didn't witness and it's one of the hardest working aircraft till today.
If I would have been PIC on that landing I would've requested a fly-by just to brag and show off. Not to brag with my skills but showing off the aircraft that took me safely wherever I companioned it.
I give you, dearest McDonnell Douglas MD-11, a big wing wave.
This is more than enough to make a grown man cry.

Geweldige video. Nog steeds de ambitie om piloot te worden, helaas is dat met de huidige crisis niet zo verstandig gezien de kosten en de arbeidsmarkt. Hopelijk kan ik mijn ''gewone'' vliegbrevet halen om dan alsnog Nederland vanuit een andere invalshoek te zien. Dit motiveert me weer om verder te studeren. Bedankt voor het delen van deze prachtige opname.
MD11 is a true classic,
Wat prachtig en wat een eervol ontvangst door Schiphol. De captain zou ongetwijfeld toch wel een traantje weggepinkt moeten hebben om afscheid te nemen van zo'n geweldige machine en topbaan als piloot.

Nice video. Very touching tribute to the pilot with the ground vehicles escorting him to the gate. Must have been a very touching moment for him.
As far as the MD-11, I first flew on a KLM MD-11 about 12 yrs ago and have flown it numerous times since with one last flight booked for August 1st from Montreal to AMS. I'm looking forward to the flight. While there may be newer planes with better technology this one has a place in my heart. Will be sad to no longer seeing it land in Montreal : (

I remember September 2012 when I was in Amsterdam for a training when my colleagues and I went off the train I looked in the sky, wondering, if I might see a KLM or even a MD11 flying. And I swear to god, the first plane I saw was a KLM MD11 coming in to land at Schipol. Really like these and really like to fly the PMDG one :)
Sad it will be retired but that's the way it goes :)
KLM is also the last airliner to operate MD-11 in passenger configuration, after the last flight. There are just freighters left ;(
I`ve seen this aircraft only few times recent years. This is really rare but very beautiful bird :) Love it :)
It`s sad, but KLM retires all of MD-11 until August 2014. Now there are only 4 MD-11`s in fleet :(
It's a pitty yes, but the replacements will also be some icons in the future...
The new a350's will enter service in 2k18-20.

Well the 350 XWB(Extra Wide Body) gives you extra space, and comes in 3 liverys.
a small medium and large(to keep it simple) while the b787 has only 1 livery.

I live near the former Long Beach Factory where these were built. I used to drive by it and park and look at the near completed aircraft. Sad that the end is near for these planes.

Seems like his career wasn`t ending with this flight. On Linkedin he is listed as MD-11 Captain for Nordic Global airlines.
The MD 11 is an upgraded version of the DC 10 ; The10 had some serious problems at first, but it grew into a fine aircraft ; and the DC 10/ MD 11 are very fun to watch land. They have a dramatic flareout, especially in full-flap configuration. The very coolest airliner to watch land is the old 727.
