  • I test the range of the Nikon CLS system in full sunshine with the added trickery of snow. First the SU-800 commander and then the SB-900 triggered an SB-600 flash in direct line of sight for a long way back!

Interesting experiment. I'm looking into doing some flash photography and considering either the SU-800 or the new PocketWizards. Looks like the SU-800 works well - and its cheaper :) because only one SU-800 is needed to control multiple flashes.

I've used CLS for years with an SB-800 as commander. Never had an issue with it even if not exactly in line-of-sight. I have no interest in RF triggering unless I needed to light through a wall or something.

would have been good to benchmark performance against using the pop up flash as the commander

Hi, what if you are not direct line in sight? How SU-800 will work? I am wondering if the flash its in a softbox and still huge sunshine.

Inside a soft box will restrict the SU-800 performance a bit. You always need to keep a line of sight either way. Even in bright sunshine I've had good success with the SU-800.
