Imagine this in the 90's, being able to trade personalized copies. *At school* ''Hey Jim!'' ''Yeah Jason?'' ''Wanna play my personalized copy of mario 64 after school? It has a new floor!'' ''Heck yeah!''
This just feels like when you're dreaming about the game you played earlier that day and you don't 100% remember every detail so you make up things in your mind
- The game lagging in that huge corridor is the N64 CPU being unable to handle everything in that basement. You can set the "Counter Factor" to 1 in the emulator, but it will be less accurate. - The doors that instantly kill you/crash are those that lead out of bounds. The doors that take you to the starting area are a default warp, I guess.
in all fairness, this feels like its more of a mix of the ds remake, and the original, with the elements such as the mirror room, the luigi painting, etc. Plus, the remake did add some more elements and areas within the castle, so its not too far off for someone to misremember the game as having things in its remake that it didnt have, or maybe they let things from the remake cloud their memory of the original. it could be a number of situations.
18:09 Just wanna let you guys know that the 4 flower patches here are legitimately loss if you pay attention to them Man, this personalization AI is insane

Okay, this guy is nothing what I imagined he looked like. I thought he would have no facial hair and wear his hat backwards. This proves that TetraBitGaming truly is, what we call, unpredictable.
When he walked into the library I actually got really freaked out. I used to have dreams of this game where you could go into a library that looked similar to this one. For a while I wished/thought it actually was in the game but of course it wasn't. The dream also had a non-existent extra water level that looked like a mix between Jolly Roger Bay and Dire Dire Docks where all you had to do is collect red coins.
Could be your mind mistakenly combining the three levels with that particular music track (those two plus the Secret Aquarium, where you only need to collect red coins)
I love how many creepypastas exist in the context that in the 90's Nintendo had the ability available to them to create things like hyper realistic blood and flesh graphics and they were using it to make cursed stuff rather than just being the richest and most advanced gaming company in the world
I love the smaller stuff like different levels and secret passages on some rumors and creepy pastas but i really hate the personalised stuff Its way too far of a jump for me and instead of being likely its just screens bullshit to me Kinda like seeing a creepy pasta say "hyper realistic blood coming from my NES"
I guess the idea is that he person this game was personalised for had a terrible sense of direction and thought that this game would be impossible to navigate without a strategy guide or something. And the game responded to the players thoughts by altering itself so it'd be REALLY impossible to navigate.
Though no copies of Super Mario 64 were ever personalized (most likely), I still love this whole rabbithole and community of fuzzy memories and slight creepypasta. It's all just really fun to dive into, even though you know that it's all fake. Also, the castle has always given me major liminal space vibes, and this ROM hack enhances that.
if someone could add in an AI that generated maps and stages while following the rules of how to make a functioning Mario 64 map/level then we could truly make a version of Mario 64 that is personalised.
Maybe in the new PC conversion. At least the AI as in MIPS Hole wiki's canon is not meant to be able to generate new assets, but just mix and match assets that are already there, including unused ones like blargg and change object placements slightly etc. So that is plausible though i don't think it is made like that. If the AI is meant to be able to "pull assets from the beta" as mentioned in one MIPS hole article, that is not plausible unless they just mean unused assets that were used in a beta. An AI genuinely "alive" is obviously just creepypasta stuff and beyond today's technology. The object rearranging and assets mixing and matching is something that would be perfectly possible even in a N64 game (probably even without a proper "AI"), though I am not that knowledgeable on machine learning and how far you could go with it. Things like the Wario apparition would be hard to make occur though as that requires generation of new assets and new object behaviour and is meant to somehow give you a stroke or some crap.
@@raandomplayer8589 You mean a random terrain generator like the ones that use seeds? You could do it that way but they (both levels and stars) wouldn't really conform with a theme. You'd just have random secrets, red coins, exposed stars, stock bosses etc. Anyway, that wouldn't really be "personalisation". The idea of the AI is that it modifies things based on what it thinks you want based on your behaviour (or in a creepypasta your "cognitive desires" that it can read your brain for or something).
I also remember an infinite hallway that had the Infinite stair music playing as I ran and ran trying to reach the end and had to open specific doors until I got the success theme and the hallway didnt have the music anymore and the door at the end led me to a hallway with a bunch of boo ghosts chasing me out. And it just repeated each time I did it and they couldn't be killed
No, the "personalized" aspect is to customize and tailor the game to the players specific style and desires. It can range from small changes like sky color or the WEC, to entirely different levels, map design, and characters. It can practically redesign the entire game.
I never got to beat the game as a kid, so now I’ve got a Switch version and there are a few differences. Not personalized, just changed slightly. Like a star that was originally in a box wasn’t in a box in the Switch version. This is a pretty cool rom hack. The person who made this really made a lot of changes for this Tom hack. The music, setting, and overall atmosphere are different.
I remember having a lot of altered memories of super mario 64. Most of them come from dreams I had, where I was not sure wheather it was a dream or not. In one dream the outside of the castle was dark and there was a thunderstorm. In one other dream there was a path going between the lake and the starting area which would lead you to a windmill. In another dream there was a small tower in the theme of princess peachs castle located next to the waterfall on the left side, which would lead you to a secret course, It was a castle in the skies. And Once in the blue switch palace I saw a platform and a door on the wall, opposite of the wall where you started and it was way out of reach. I wondered where that door could lead to and I tried to find it in the actual game, but of course it isn't there.
I don't believe there are personalized copies of mario 64... However, these are my "disconnects" that I remember, and have pretty much just assumed they were glitched into the game because it was an old system. This is OG n64 US copy: 1. The castle turns red when you get all 120 stars (although I only remember this happening once, and when the save was deleted, it never happened again.) 2. All castle top corners you could go through. 3. You could go to the bowser painting, but nothing happened, it was just like a wall. 4. Teleporting at all during a koopa race would be counted as cheating. 5. I remember getting on top of the water fall somehow (idk, thought i'd add that because I could no longer do it now on emulator) 6. I never was able to BLJ, I heard about it in my later playthroughs on the n64, but I could never do it. But I was easily able to do it on emulator. That's all I remember.
I have a game called Super Mario 69. It’s a really cool game where Luigi is just sorta chilling outside by the fountain. Also Wario is by the Dire Dire Docks but instead of killing you. He gives you a free star!
To confirm about the music: In the original game, the music is played in major key (which means that it sounds happy) In this rom hack, when you enter the second floor drop in Bowser's room or enter the locked doors (I don't know what to call it) the music is played in minor key (which means that it sounds more sad, dark or eerie) Hope this helped
this overlay in this video is an optical illusion. logically I know that the gameplay isn't tilted at all but the background makes it look like it's frickin' crooked
This hack and Marionova's work is spot on with tone. The reason I believe this hack and his footage from it is so compelling and "eerily familiar" to so many people because it illustrates a very real experience many of us had: getting obsessed with the game while young, spending hours and hours with it leading to dreams about it, where it's the similar but weirdly different and confusing, and the memories get a little mixed with reality in your young brain. "Hey where is tha-oh, yeah, that was just a dream.." I know I have had this "gaming dream" phenomenon with lots of games I got hooked onto as a child.
Idk how to feel about me watching this video and being like "wasn't that in the actual game? I swear that was in the actual game" It seems to have been a while since I've played the game
4:30 Correct. It is in a MINOR key, not a MAJOR key. The half steps (not notes) shift down and push the whole steps (a white key's worth) up. Points is...There's more variation in a major scale to fit most happy moods. Minor scales are more restrictive, causing you to feel such...
I never recalled levels being different than usual in my experiences but I sometimes had weird visions and dreams about extensions to areas that spanned different floors and stuff...
So the music in Bowser's hideout sounds like it's probably in the parallel minor of whatever key it's in, which is why all of the pitches are so close, but it sounds just a little bit off. I actually really like the theme in minor, it reminds me of a certain work from Bach, and it's really neat to listen to.
That's what I thought, it sounds just close enough to the original so that nothing sounds drastically off but just different to where something is going on.

i thought the 'personalized' part was being that your cartrage was catered to you and it always feels weird when you play someone else's cartrage or a new cartrage?
that's exactly it, it just manifests in things being "different" (different ways of accessing levels, luigi being unlockable, etc etc) if a player wants them enough
Wait... Boos in a hallway that supposedly doesn't exist? *Flashbacks to watching my aunt play this game with a HALLWAY WITH BOOS THAT I PLAYED THE GAME AND COULDN'T FIND without a rom hack or anything, all before watching this video or knowing anything by anybody else besides me and my aunt involving mario 64* Is this legit? If it is, it isn't anywhere close to this prominent.
Story: 1995, Nintendo bought some wacky ass AI that manipulates emotions, and Mario 64 on Magic Mushrooms is born. Personalized to Mario is an infinite amount of hallucinations and seizures, said by the uncles working at Nintendo, so thus, a legend over some rubber band AI that can be beat by just not playing the game is born.
Running gag throughout the video: "Apparently some people remember that..(insert anomalies that were not actually present in the game), _I've no idea_ .
I remember having a SM64 dream where the third floor had a bunch of red stairs and carpet, and had a bunch of pictures of Bowser and Lethal Lava Land pictures.
I'm really frustrated how you keep saying "So maybe this is how people remember Mario 64" over and over because this is a rom based on the rabbit hole, the Mario 64 rabbit hole community doesn't actually believe this is real, it's just based on how people will misremember something and believe that's how things always were. On the rabbit hole wiki you can even see their posting guidelines call it 'lore'.
yknow with how good AI has gotten especially in the last year or so, i can't imagine it would be impossible to actually construct a "personalized" mario 64 romhack, which has some kind of random seed rng or something to toggle on or off features based on some algorithm or other or if its played in a specialized emulator it actually makes calls to a gpt api or something to toggle on or off features
there's so much place you could go that I couldn't, omg ! in fact.. that's probably caused by the fact you have 82 stars, so the game unlocked a lot of doors and invisible walls :P

I think the castle music when it’s different is just shifted to its parallel minor key.
Edit: just looked it up and it is:
The eeriest thing in the entire video is that Tetra didn't notice that Mario is running differently...
When this is finished it will be like the backrooms of Mario 64
It’s very likely people remember things like this. It’s extremely easy for the brain to form false memories.
When I played Mario 64 as a kid with a fever I remember toad being at the top of the stair case not at the bottom-
Hey Tetrabit!!! Your Almost Like a Dr.! That Keeps People Calm Down & Relaxing!!! i Watch Mario Kart Double Dash Lost Bits! Over & Over!! Because! it Keep Me Calm Down & Relaxing To!!! Ahhh. Nice!! :)
stuff that people might've remembered in sm64 idk i haven't asked them:
(this video)
I had this "Hm, that's different" feeling once with SM64, when i watched Cheese speedrun 120 Stars.
And than i realised my childhood memories were of the DS Version😂
Me too, dude
Same, i played the DS one as a kid and it muddled my memory, i wondered why the hedge maze outside wasnt in it anymore 😂
When do we get a "personalizer" randomizer where it adds or shuffles new vanilla-style content around in subtle ways
Wario: You want fun? Wario show you fun! Brings out a smash ultimate game card me: look guys Wario shower us fun
i thought the 'personalized' part was being that your cartrage was catered to you and it always feels weird when you play someone else's cartrage or a new cartrage?
that's exactly it, it just manifests in things being "different" (different ways of accessing levels, luigi being unlockable, etc etc) if a player wants them enough
*cartridge
Wait... Boos in a hallway that supposedly doesn't exist?
*Flashbacks to watching my aunt play this game with a HALLWAY WITH BOOS THAT I PLAYED THE GAME AND COULDN'T FIND without a rom hack or anything, all before watching this video or knowing anything by anybody else besides me and my aunt involving mario 64*
Is this legit? If it is, it isn't anywhere close to this prominent.
if sm64 is personalized im a really boring person
Ok, I thought I was the only one....this was not what I thought it would be but the rooms were pretty cool.
I've been following the videos of Marionova's personalized copy, cool to see it without a VCR effect
I’m lost what’s going on here? I’ve played Mario 64 and I’m jsut lost here
Story:
1995, Nintendo bought some wacky ass AI that manipulates emotions, and Mario 64 on Magic Mushrooms is born. Personalized to Mario is an infinite amount of hallucinations and seizures, said by the uncles working at Nintendo, so thus, a legend over some rubber band AI that can be beat by just not playing the game is born.
The Mario and coin logo are also different on this rom

@@oefest5252 Go home, you're drunk.
William Ruiz I still can’t seem to find who tf asked
@@oefest5252 It's good to see you sobered up! Let's get a beer to celebrate!
Running gag throughout the video: "Apparently some people remember that..(insert anomalies that were not actually present in the game), _I've no idea_ .
I thought this was a wario apparation rom hack
the music at the bowser fight is an almost empty piano version of the final bowser music from bowser in the sky
4:10 what’s that altered castle music? It’s stuck in my head plz give me a 1 hour version
I forgot what it is called, sorry
Matthew Timothy I got the rom. I found a way to get stars and the first water level crashes personalised mario 64
Matthew Timothy I know the music now I think
Form the rom itslef
Just look up "peach's castle in minor key", I don't think there is a 1 hour version though
In his defense that's kinda confusing.
yknow with how good AI has gotten especially in the last year or so, i can't imagine it would be impossible to actually construct a "personalized" mario 64 romhack, which has some kind of random seed rng or something to toggle on or off features based on some algorithm or other
or if its played in a specialized emulator it actually makes calls to a gpt api or something to toggle on or off features
Was this streamed on twitch?!?!? I never got notification!
It wasn't streamed!
there's so much place you could go that I couldn't, omg !
in fact.. that's probably caused by the fact you have 82 stars, so the game unlocked a lot of doors and invisible walls :P
U WANT FUN? WARIO WILL SHOW YOU FUN!
8 year old me: i cant find luigi. my personalized mario 64: i can help with that
When i first saw this i th ought hey there might be the wario ghost and king bombe obe s child
was the giant eel popping out of the pirate ship for anyone else?
4:17 that castle music is in minor key instead of major...it sounds so off, a little sad, and it makes me feel unconfortable
Actually the wet dry world painting working was supposed to be part of the personalised "creepypasta" where you could only enter wet dry world
Disliked and Unsubscribed because Tetra didn't say "Hey guys TetraBitGaming here."
Even this hack is not personalized
I never grew up with Super Mario 64, but I've been playing it for the past two months and I've been enjoying it (except the water levels)
This rom hack give out a sorta fever dream effect like you said to one who have not played the game in years
