    The freeze-dried apples retain their shape and size, but they're very crispy and have almost a styrofoam texture. Now that doesn't sound appetizing, but when you rehydrate them, they'll be very similar to a fresh apple slice.

      Great info! We haven’t tried rehydrating one yet I’ll have to do that

    Did you rinse the apples with water after having them in the apple cider vinegar? This looks amazing. Thank you!

    It would be good to spice them up before you FD them cinnamon and "sugar" or something. 👍🏼

    It appears as though your apples needed more time . They should be very crunchy and light any moisture when storing will reduce how long you can store them. It looks like you need more drying time.

    • @DIYfreezedry
      @DIYfreezedry  Год назад

      Yeah probably could have used more time. They still tasted great and held up perfect for snacking but next time I’ll have them go longer 👍🏻

    Do you skip tray warming or is that even an option? I'm new to freeze drying and have only done candy so far but was gifted lots of apples so this will be the first non candy food I try! Would you suggest to add even more extra dry time (more than the 5 HR you originally did) or were they good to go after the five? By the way - I am beyond grateful for you and your channel. I joined all these freeze drying fb groups but after finding your channel - I just come here for all my information! You're so generous with your time and information. And sharing your family, adventures, and Alaska with all of us is an added bonus! ❤🍎

      When you are doing a full freeze drying run(not in candy mode) It does not ask you to warm trays so you don't need to worry about that step! I use the standard settings on my machine after I hit the reset button, but I do increase the dry time to like 6 hours or so, but I sometimes test it sooner than that to see if its done. Sometimes it is, sometimes its not and needs to go longer

    My apples never got crunchy. I did them for 32 hours and I’m worried I did it wrong. I used an apple core sliced and so mine were round (cut in 1/2, so like a crescent). Hope they are okay. I went ahead and bagged them up.

      @@JenniferClements-vw6yf hmmm not positive seems like enough time. Were they pretty thin? Sometimes thicker fruits are harder to get crunch and high moisture content. But I bet they’re fine to eat still

      @@DIYfreezedry they were very thin. I used a core, peeler slicer.

    How do you keep them from getting foamy and softer? I cut mine mine a slicer so mine were really thin and I ran 12 hr extra dry time. I packaged them in Mylar bags with oxygen saver pack and when I opened them they didn’t keep the crunch. Did I do something wrong? I’ve never had them before. They tasted great I did Granny Smiths and my kids loved them.

    • @DIYfreezedry
      @DIYfreezedry  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hmm I wonder if the Oxygen saver was bad?? Or the bag wasn’t fully sealed….. that would be my only guess. Mine stayed pretty crunchy but we did eat them fairly quickly so i haven’t tried any that have been stored for a while yet.
