- Joshua Castille as Quasimodo and E.J. Cardona as the Voice of Quasimodo perform "Out There" from The 5th Avenue Theatre's production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
At The 5th Avenue Theatre, we transport audiences and tell important stories. This incredible staging of The Hunchback of Notre Dame recognizes Quasimodo’s deafness and stars Deaf actor Joshua Castille as Quasimodo. Vocal talent E.J. Cardona brings Quasimodo’s inner voice to life.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame plays June 1 - 24, 2018 at The 5th Avenue Theatre.

This is a victory for disabled actors, that's all I can say about this performance. The fact that Castille shows so much emotion despite not being the singing voice of Quasimodo, both they and Cardona deliver one of the best Quasimodo performances I have ever seen.
it’s not really “despite” not being the singing voice, facial expressions are a HUGE part of asl (and part of why i’m bad at asl). facial expressions convey what tone of voice/inflection does in spoken language. but i agree, this rendition of this song is honestly my favorite
Ok I see they are being inclusive but in-universe what is the artistic meaning? Is Quasimodo deaf and the gargoyle is an imaginary friend - a representation of his lost voice?
it really is this is amazing
1:44 when he signs "every instant" with Quasimodo!! I think this staging was such a gorgeous way to emphasiz Quasimodo's character, especially his relationship with the gargoyles. They are his best companions, and he projects so many of his thoughts with them
It was like harmonizing
It works better than the Disney version
This is astoundingly creative plan for quasimodo...
구구기획99Entertainment well he is supposed to be deaf in the story. Standing so close to ringing bells would make anyone deaf. I just hate the lack of visuals and the fact they brought back the gargoyles
Aha! I see haha, but still i like this video
Thanks for comment
I watched this particular production and honestly I hated the gargoyles in the movie but actually thought they worked quite well as Quasimodos inner monologue in this musical stage adaption. They aren’t the cringeworthy gargoyles of the movie but instead really help develop the main character’s struggles and identity. “Made of Stone” was by far the highlight of the show.
@@99lodewijk they didn''t really bring them "back" per say, the costuming is just a little on the nose XD
@@Gfilam I'm torn because I like gargoyles in general and I think they do a great job at letting Quasimodo express himself but they weren't there when the book is set.
The amount of emotion that Quasimodo showed despite only using sign language and not saying a word is insane.
ASL is actually a very very expressive language, and facial expressions are one of the most important elements of sign. I started taking ASL last year, and it is one of the most emotional, expressive languages I have ever encountered.
It has to be expressive. As hearing people, we get a lot of information from tone. What he’s doing is the same.
I wouldn't say "despite" and "only", that's not the way to look at itǃ
@adore7248 from how my ASL teacher explained it to me, facial expression is the equivalent to grammar to speaking languages.
It’s a very important part of the language, and strangely difficult to do for some people
The Deaf Actor playing Quasimodo is my dear friend Joshua Castille!!! I was there when he performed at La Mirada Thester! The whole production made me cry
Your friend is so freaking talented!!!
I have never smiled so wide in my entire life. This is absolutely the most beautiful portrayal of Quasi I've ever seen on stage. Is he in anything else? He's so handsome and the emotion he signs with is so moving!❤
Okay the fact that he is not singing he is signing the song. Because the Bells made him deaf. And the gargoyles his imaginary friends are the ones singing this song. That is honestly amazing.
Is the actor really deaf.
The Actor is really Deaf
@@rimfire8217Yes, the actor is really deaf.
Someone needs to call Disney to tell them this is how the live-action remake needs to be done 👏👏
Umm no…
Speaks so much importance to the disabled What people can do no matter what they face is so encouraging and heart warming 💓 ✨️
Disabled people can do everything that others do It is just a little different but can be done ❤
While i would love the remake to have this quality, let’s face it.
The remake is probably going to be trash
This is a great rendition!! 😃
I must say, I really applaud these kinds of productions, not only for staying accurate to the character in the book but for also allowing deaf actors to be able to play a very iconic role and play to their strengths! As a disabled person myself, it really warms my heart to see this kind of representation for disabled people ❤️ I hope with the likes of this show and Lost Voice Guy recently winning Britain’s Got Talent that there will be more opportunities for them to prove there is more to them than the general public perceives 😃
Especially since the musical is about ableism.
I honestly didn't like it at first because the actor doesn't get to sing but then tirns out the actor is deaf so... GOOD!
I read the book. Quasimodo was deaf, NOT mute.
J Do I believe that in this production the deaf actor, Joshua, does speak at least some of his lines. Just in the songs his inner voice takes over.
@@zacharynab you sure? I've watched a couple cast interviews, and he has a translator in each one, but never speaks himself 🤔
I saw a production like this a year ago at the Music Circus, and honestly, I think it’s the best way to portray the character. Quasimodo’s deafness was already showed in the original stage adaption by the difference between his speaking voice and his singing voice, his inner monologue. I think that doing it this way, with a whole separate actor as his “voice”, really helps make that distinction. Not to mention it gives HoH actors more opportunities and makes what I believe to be a more authentic performance & portrayal.
And Quasimodo was already deaf in the book which makes this an even cooler portrayal!
I agree, on both counts.
For those questioning why Quasimodo is doing sign language, it all goes back to the original story. See, in the original book, he was deaf because of the bells.
Josh Castille is one of my favorite stage actors. I was fortunate enough to see him as Ernst in Deaf West’s “Spring Awakening”, so I was overjoyed when I learned that he’d be playing the title role in “Hunchback.” My hat’s off to the casting department for casting a deaf actor in this role and for incorporating ASL throughout the show, as I feel it adds a special element of authenticity. I live in Michigan, so taking a trip to Seattle just to see the show will be out of the question, so I suppose I’ll have to survive off the clips that are uploaded here instead. ☹️
Wish you were closer so you could see the show! Thanks for your support.
Fun Fact: I'm pretty sure this version of Spring Awakening was directed by Michael Arden AKA the "first" (and best IMO) Quasimodo!
Michael Arden DID direct the Deaf West Spring Awakening version that Josh was in, yes! Josh talked a little bit about his conversations with Michael about the role of Quasimodo in the vlog he did a few months ago.
the part that says "every instant" and the connection between actors is tear-jerking
Seeing this live was fucking unreal, this video doesn't do it justice! They were so amazing!!!
Alex Marx I agree! I absolutely bawled my eyes out when I heard his angelic voice and saw the signing along with it. It was just wonderfully magical!!
I wish I could've seen it!
This makes me tear up every time I watch it. Both the signing actor and the singing actor are so great in their roles.
For anyone thinking or saying how impressive Josh is "despite" being Deaf and "only" using sign language... ASL is EXTREMELY expressive and emotive. Facial expressions are key and body language is also really important. ASL is not just signing English, it's an entirely different language with it's own grammar and word structure.
Not only is this an amazing interpretation, but his signing is some of the most poetic I've ever seen.
This might be too much to ask, I don't know... my oldest sister is deaf and mute and when I showed her this video it absolutely warmed her heart and she begged me to try and find a way to get the whole thing so she could see it. She's in Colorado and cannot travel to you... but is there a way that maybe a full video could be posted? I understand this is a lot to ask, but it would mean a lot to find out if we could!
Hi there! So glad to hear our production is reaching many people far and wide. Unfortunately due to our licensing agreement, we're unable to record and publish the entire show. You can see all of our available clips here on our Hunchback playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLG4bJvKx7lBtjqZjNyfhzle_JLO6_Dlqv
You could try searching for some “slime tutorials” out there, but I don’t know if there’ll be any available
I was thinking the same thing. Would love to see the full performance. Sad that won’t be possible, the clips I’ve seen are so great
If anybody ever does find a slime tutorial of it, please link it here and I will sell you my firstborn (for legal reasons that’s a joke)
Instantly started crying.
Wtf so beautiful and what a way to portay this character. Still crying 😥
This makes so much sense on an artistic level since Quasimodo was deaf in the original Victor Hugo novel. The use of have a detractor and an interpreter to convey the emotions Quasimodo feels brings tears to my eyes.
It's really tragic that this production can't be relived in its entirety. Undoubtedly one of the most consummate realizations of this musical.
Amazing to se Josh Castile sign this it so beautiful…giving props to EJ Cardona, his breath support is out of this world!
WOW im still in love with Josh Castille
This is and always will be my favorite song in the Disney movie. Living with ADHD is hard when you want to be involved with everyday stuff but at the same time you're wishing you weren't such a pest...this song is almost a perfect representation for all of us mentally ill individuals. Victor Hugo's book can be a doorway for people who struggle with disabilities and it shows!
I don’t have ADHD but I do have autism, I strongly relate to this song
Matthew Brown Mate, same here
Or it's about... just breaking out of your comfort zone, connecting with others. How come people with mental illness make everything about themselves sometimes. Never have me or my sister sat and watched a movie and thought "hmmm. Needs more representation for people dealing with depression/anxiety." We watch movies as an escape from all that crap.
Toon Angel 17 I’m really struggling because I’m waiting for a diagnosis, but this made me emotional
J Do I’m confused by your comment... is it a bad thing to relate to very particular struggles of disability and mental illness? These are things that aren’t portrayed very often in media, and certainly not in Disney media. The fact that people of all abilities and mental health can find beauty in a story in their own way is a beautiful thing, and I find your comment to be quite condescending to those who were touched by this rendition. Quasimodo is a character with disabilities. They’re downplayed in the movie, but they play a much larger part in the book. Representation of disabilities is important. And it’s absolutely great that you can find your own meaning in this story of breaking out of your comfort zone and connecting with others. That is a great connection to make. But it isn’t the only one, and this story (and any story) speaks differently to different people based on life experience. You should not attack people for how they relate to the character, song, and story.
The amount of emotion Joshua is able to show is almost scary it’s SO good!
If I've watched this once I've watched it a thousand times. My son is Deaf so I'm learning ASL and tHoND has one of the best soundtracks in Disney history, so this never doesn't make me emotional. 😭
Cardona's VOICE! Oh my wow i love it! He sounded amazing.
Great performance from them both!
His expression is a paragon!
How have I never seen this??? EJ Cardona has been a favorite for awhile and Joshua Castille has become a favorite more recently. LOVE. 🤟
Just saw this the other night and it blew my mind!! It absolutely made the show, it was so powerful and moving, Joshua is an AMAZING actor!!!! It was so incredible when he came out on stage then bent down and BECAME Quasimodo the transformstion was incredible just with his acting and his body. It wouldn't have been half as good a show without him and the gargoyles omg. The feeling and emotion btwn him and the guy who was singing here with him was so palpable. I'm totally gonna go see it again with the $25 coupon b4 it's over!!
Yeah he straps on a hump and smears some lines on his face messes up his hair closes and eye and that’s him no hours of make up for him
I am learning ASL. And as a hearing person, I realize how the hearing world leaves the deaf community out of many things. I am glad to see some musicals with signing and a chance for deaf actors to accomplish their dreams. I hope it continues!
In my mind, this is the only way to do Quasimodo, since the character is deaf in the book.
This makes me want to cry. No words to describe this. Just fabulous.
Wow this was amazing it added a whole other dimension to Quasimodo aswell as being deformed he is also deaf, giving Frollo another thing to lorde over him
I've never seen a performance and cried like I have watching this one. What a powerful performance!
BRILLIANT!!! Quasimodo should be deaf!!! HE LITERALLY RINGS CHURCH BELLS FOR A LIVING!!! absolutely beautiful rendition
I just found out about this production and I'm sobbing because I love how they included asl because Quasimodo was deaf in the books 😭 this makes my heart so happy.
Josh and EJ magnificent
This is incredible. I never read the book, but I have seen from other videos and posts that Quasimodo is deaf because of the bell ringing. So this is a great adaptation in holding true to character. I love the passion given in facial expressions and movements while giving sign. I don't know of this actor, and from what I've read below, he is an actor who is deaf. Hat's off to him for an amazing job
❤🤩🤗 AMAZING 🤯 MIND BLOWN
This makes me cry every time I see this rendition of the show because of how good it is and how much it moves me to see how diverse and accepting the world of theater is
This performance always moves me to tears, no matter how many times I’ve seen it. HUGE kudos to both actors! They work so well together!
EJ is amazing
I saw the deaf production with John McGinty a couple of years ago and was blown away. And Josh Castile will obviously kill it.
Joshua (Quasimodo) looks like he’s having a ball.
This... This is amazing. Props to the actors. Just. Great
Somehow I’m only just discovering this production, and now I’m utterly in love. Josh Castille is my new favorite Quasimodo (a bold statement, given how much I’ve always loved the character), and EJ has such a beautiful and genuine voice. I would gladly sell all of my internal organs to go back in time and watch the full show 😭
i'm so sad i never got to see this :( so imma just keep watching this and act like i was there lol
EJ Cardona was already one of my favorite artists, but this performance, just amazing. Love how he got to be the voice of this amazing actor! Great job guys 🤟🏻
Learning about this production with Josh Castille as Quasimodo has really inspired me - I wish I could've seen him perform as Quasi! A couple of my family members are deaf, so I've grown up most of my life seeing sign language, but not knowing very many words - I know the entire alphabet, so I can speak letter by letter, but I want to learn more words. Who knows? Maybe at some point, I'll even post a cover of "Out There" where I sign the lyrics as I sing!
The way they make this version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame really amazing and it's a way to show how a person who can't hear and uses sign language to perform and someone else to do the singing is the best
This HIT different
He slayed
Need the full performance
This is really freakin' cool.
Ahhh, my heart is full from this performance
I’m in literal tears
Gods I need a full video of this production.
Wherever they are, Victor Hugo and Lon Chaney Sr. are very proud. Bravo and blessed be. )O(
I love this so much I am so sad that I don’t live close enough to see the show live
Is impressive how Quasimodo actor get in that feeling without even Sing!
Genius interpretation of the character of Quasimodo. Beautiful!
That was such a moving performance of this song. I loved this song from the movie and didn't know it could be performed to move my heart even more than it already did.
AMAZING I very much appreciate people like this disabled person who are willing to put themselves " OUT THERE " watching the sign language for me is extra special when with what I have my brain problem makes my word connection and understanding difficult I never could be brave enough to be like wonderful NORMAL PERSON in my understanding to speak loud without saying a spoken word I hear fine but speaking can be a problem for me and also get distracted easily I think silence can speak so loud and be so powerful ❤ people say a picture is a thousand words but the expression along with the hand motions done speak so much more than actual having the ability to talk / or hear whatever the disability YOU HAVE OVERCOME IT !!!!!!!
Quasimodo never possessed a more beautiful voice...
This wrecked my tear ducts.... this is the most EMOTIONAL performance of this song, of the Hunchback in general, that I have ever seen
Wow! I've got chills! Such amazing actors. So much thought must have gone into this. In the book Quasimodo is infact deaf from the bells. It even mentions that he had developed a form of communication with Frollo through gestures!!! Of course it wouldn't be as advanced as ASL but still!!! A very true to form rendition this truly captures the soul of Victor Hugo's Quasimodo! Bravo!!! I wish I could see more
I’m doing a production of this that’s opening this weekend & this is so beautiful. I literally cried watching this. Fantastic!
Break a leg!
I know this is 2 years later, but who did you play?
this is the best quasimodo performance ever
i'm tearing up, this is SO SO SO BEAUTIFUL
I have to say, I think my favorite part is all of the clear positive energy that everyone has! It's clear that all of the extras love Josh so much and that he loves what he's doing so deeply. What an amazing message.
OMG! The passion! The expression! Clearly we need far far far more deaf actors! I have never seen such expression, or such bombastic feeling from a non- deaf person. I've seen a couple of shows with deaf/blind actors and they tend to be awesome! This guy is skilled as a person, his embodiment of Quasimodo's humanity is fantastic!
EJ should get his own show! What a voice! To do what he did in Hunchback is a testament to perfection
Maybe it’s just me, but the way that Quasi’s actor signs “minute” (the lyric is “moment”) at 1:46 looks a lot like the sign for “week” to me bc he signs it kinda sideways but I like it bc it feels like he would treasure everything he is given, if it is weeks outside or just a minute. EDIT: that sign for minute can also be moment or second but my pint still stands
Holy shit! where has this been my whole life!
Joshua, I'm in love for him right now. Very good actor, convey emotions through facial expression. I would love to see that live. And A.J. way to go. That's a very hard song to sing...
Two amazing performers! Works so well!
Wow!!How Amazing.😀
I thought I couldn't love The Hunchback of Notre Dame any more (any adaptation format)... I was wrong ❤ this is brilliant 👏❤
One of my favorite Disney songs and movies when I was a youth.
I love deaf productions, because they always caption so well and that really helps me be able to enjoy it
I love Josh so much aaaaaaa he’s so talented and the fact that he’s a successful deaf broadway actor fills me with so much pride and hope. What a babe
Ok. Goosebumps. This is absolutely wonderful AND necessary! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Such an amazing interpretation, I loved that it was in ASL as well. I'm crying with joy and emotion, this is one of my favorite songs ever.
Bring the whole show on RUclips please
I saw and met Josh in Seattle when I saw Romeo + Juliet where Romeo (Josh) and the Friar were Deaf actors. So amazing. He's so nice!
So much emotion, and not a single word said. Very strong acting on the part of Quasimodo. Thank you for sharing!
Awesome
This was so amazing. so so so so amazing. Nothing less than absolutely superb
interesting... indeed. I have never thought in my whole life someone else would sing for Quasimodo AND have him sign! I was bewildered when I saw this.
Apart from this being perfect for Quasimodo. I think that sign language is beautiful in general I started to learn it a while ago but the pure physical expression of emotions is beautiful I love seeing it. you can see Quasimodo's emotions through the way he signs words and not just the words themselves.
I’m shaking. Beyond incredible performance. I would’ve done anything to see this. Jaw dropping.
I always loved the part of Quasimodo because his heart was as good as gold
Brilliant performance by the Joshua and E.J. Wish I could see this live but alas I'm in a different country.
This was the prettiest duet of this song I've ever seen :D They both expressed this scene and song so wonderfully.
Love his voice and the actor doing ASL! I wish I can see this!
Still one of my favorite performance i've ever seen on stage.
Ok, wow. I love how they did this.
the genius of having a deaf actor play as quasimodo! kudos to the cast and crew for this phenomenal adaptation!
Oh my god this is AMAZING. I literally have goosebumps from head to to. I freaking LOVE this.
You made me cry.... So beautiful and powerful, I had never seen this way to show Quasimodo.... It's another think
