Awesome Cruiser Community: Helping Hands For Sanding My Hull - UNTIE THE LINES #28

- This week I organized a littel Sanding Party and had some friends over to help me to smoothen the surface of Karl's hull. It was a fun day, we got a lot of work done and had a couple of cold beers afterwards. Life is good and another positive finding was, that one of the holes is actually not in my tank (as I feared) but "only" in my engine room.
Find out more about my life with KARL on whitespotpirates. If you enjoy watching my documentary and therefore want to contribute a little bit for internet costs / video equipment, then you can do so here: www.paypal.com.... Thank you for your support!
I'm so glad you didn't quit. These videos have been so inspirational. It is great to see what your doing.
You've reminded me of how much boat ownership is like a marriage. Karl may irritate, cause you extra work and keep you up at nights worrying, but in the end you will nurse him back to health and he will take care of you when you need him the most. You are well on the way to becoming a mariner, overcoming and solving problems, integrating into the cruising, self sufficient life style of a world traveler. You have the right mindset for the job at hand. I am enjoying watching you grow your horizons before my eyes. You and Karl are headed for great adventures.
some people are awesome - they look at something nobody else wants and they see a dream and then make it so. love your videos - keep them coming
You have the patience of a SAINT!
That’s great that people came along to help 😃. That spirit within you is coming back
Brilliant job you're doing on KARL. Each brings you a little closer to getting KARL back in the water and on your way. Thank you for continuing to share with us. Take Care.
I just discovered your show as well and have been sick the last few days and have watched all of them!! Soooo inspirational. My Lady and I are planning to sail soon. Thank you for not giving up! May God richly bless you!
Ahhhhhhhhhhh... you did have a sanding party! And of course there will be other parties, but the best will be a launching party!!!!!! Go Karl!
(you are so smart!)
Always more fun working with others that have the same passion. Glad you met Ben and Teresa! They're a great couple. Looking forward to next weeks video.
You Rock Girl, keep up the good work!
Glad that there is some happiness and encouraging things happening !!!!
Teamwork rocks! Had some friends help me sand Karl's hull. It's so much more fun if you work with other people rather than by youself. And so much quicker, too :)
Great news, look forward to more vids
I really enjoy watching your videos. I just bought a 30 feet sailing boat, and the next week I´m going to expend some days repairing/preparing it for the 4 days sailing trip back home. Thanks for the motivation!!!
You have courage in abundance. I have to do some work on my boat wich I kept putting of. I'm doing it now you are an inspiration and a model to go by. Thanks
I had my birthday recently and some friends asked what I wanted as a present, my answer was a few hours of their time to help me with jobs on my boat. So on the day of my birthday me and 3 friends spent a few hours getting through a lot of jobs and then I shouted the beers afterwards. One of them admitted to be useless at anything practical so he offered to go get the coffees as his contribution. Nothing like a working bee to get the work done. Just make sure the beer comes out after the work, not before or during or nothing will get done. I am sure if your followers were closer we would have your boat done in no time, but then you would miss out on the intimate time you are having with Karl. You will know him inside out which is what you want when out at sea and something goes wrong. Well Done.
My friend has an alu boat too.
He made an epoxy barrier under the waterline to prevent corrosion and also add zinc anodes.
So I highly recommend to put on a few epoxy layer before you paint the antifouling.
Great to see the work progressing.
So repairs. Soon and what method
I have been doing what research I can and you also need to resolve why you got the electrolysis . Prop able from the missing or hanging zincs! But it could be caused by Karl having a bad electrical system.
A link at bottom has some good advice on that.
Also the welding option requires very carful prep and welding from inside , also possibly tempering the surrounding aluminium to avoid crack around the weld as the metal shrinks and cools. The thiner the metal the more it might crack. Epoxy repairs and painting might require etching just before applying epoxy paint or fillers. Caustic soda is one etching process used , there are commercial products that have this in them.
If you holes are only pin holes then you may be able to do mechanical repairs , bolted on patches of plastic or similar being carful not to mix up metal and cause more problems
By the way another way to fix holes is to put a plastic fitting such as a thru hull fitting or similar where the holes are.then cap of inside. This would be exactly the same as every boat out there with they hull fittings.
I might try and find a nice Marlon type plastic bolt to use so no hole to plug.
Link to electrical problems with the boat is below

Also tom Colvin who is old now may be worth talking to as metal boat were a specially of his and sailed and aluminium boat for 16 yrs all over the world.
I'm realy hopeful and trustful that I'm gonna see you sailing you dream path. I put here my prays for your jorney.
Karl is a demanding boy, your hard work will be rewarded Nike
Things seem to be looking up for you and Karl. That's good to see. Looking forward to seeing the next video. Cheers!
Nike, so happy that you received help on your sanding. Look forward to your progress on S/V Karl, I know you will get the hull fixed one way or the other take care of yourself.
Your adventure is so very inspiring to me. I look forward to your updates every week and send positive thoughts into the universe for you every time I watch your updates. I hope to cross your path in the future and congratulate you on a magnificent job your doing. As Themangese suggested, the more zincs you have attached to the boat, the less electrolysis problems you will have. Take care and keep positive, there is a lot of people out there wishing good happy thoughts for you and Karl.
I'm sure that engine will run much better now that it's clean. At least it'll seem to, lol. I like your initiative in rounding up some help. Looks like a nasty job was turned into some fun. Nice.
Regards, Gary
Glad to see you in good spirits and that Karl is doing his bit to get back in the ocean! Hopefully the worst is behind you now. (Touch wood)
Already looking forward to next week's report. :)
I'm sure there are a great many other resourceful young people out there like Nike but I must confess I've never seen such compelling proof of their existence as is contained in this wonderful series. I'm a casual crew member on a Beneteau 40 out of Kirribilli in Sydney Harbour and Nike's dreams push a lot of buttons for me and I imagine, for a great many other viewers. More practically, I am learning so much about how much I have yet to learn.
Great idea on the sanding party! In my experience boating people are a tight bunch that look after their own as much as possible. If you are going to weld aluminum you will have to expose some bare metal about 4 inches around each repair. Other from that the bottom primer will paint over just fine. Be generous with the Zincs. Karl has a compromised bottom already you don't want anymore trouble. On that note, have you hired someone to inspect the bottom for any more problems - soft spots, thin, weak metal? It could be an idea if your budget allows or tap it yourself - research it first. Love the videos!
Oh! and a clean engine is a happy engine!
Congratulations. It is hard to really be confident in your boat until you know it intimately. I do hope you are not sharing toothbrushes with with Karl though. Thanks and see you next week.
Nike, I have just discovered your channel a couple of weeks ago. I just got caught up last week. So nice to see things coming together finally for you. You sure are a determined young lady. What you have encountered would have crushed others. You have a huge fan here in Canada's West Coast. I look forward to your adventures to come. Be Safe and Be Strong but most of all Be Good to Yourself. I look forward to your next Ep of "Untie The Lines"
I pray your all right. Feeling a bit of anxiety about not seeing your regular posting from Friday Mar 28. That's what happens when you make us care about you!
Sorry for the irregularity. But it is not always easy to be on time as there are so many things happening and also internet is not so super great here. I used to leave my computer in the lounge of the hotel over night to upload, but there has been some theft lately, so I cannot do that anymore either and up on the hard, I do not get any reception at all...Don't worry, all is good so far with Karl and me and I hope to get back to posting on time soon... :) This week it won't work out again, either...but I will try for next week!!
That's a great idea to glue the sandpaper to the thing like that.
Sanding party, two thumbs up!
Good idea. There is always a solution.
Deutsche Grundlichkeit in Panama !!! Live your dream , and sanding there in freedom still looks better than working for the boss in Belgium . Be Well
Wow just great your getting it done. You may just be in the water before me lol.I can hardly wait to have my boat done in the water and heading for Europe the Azores where I have a place.
Enjoying your choice of music.
You met Ben and Teresa? I am sooooo Jealous! It's good to see you in better spirits these days. Fair winds and following seas. Save a space under your palm tree for us hear. You never know when we might crash one of your night parties. The Sunday sanding party was a good idea too. Your becoming quite the little sailor chic over there.
Awesome, just really great work.
I guess if other side of whole in engine room is in good shape, should indicate problems originated from the outside. That's great! Looks like it's all coming together. But, I did knock on wood;)
So good to see the progress you are making. Glad you didn't listen to the naysayers who advised your trashing your boat and abandoning your dream. Patch a couple of those holes with epoxy and try knocking the patches out with a hammer after they cure. You will be surprised how tough that stuff is. Unless you can find someone to weld the holes for under ten dollars..
Keep up all the Great work it pays off in the end and you can be proud of the job do it while you are young and enjoy it. Great Job go Girl
i wish i would have been there from the beginning of the paint stripping marathon i would have helped you in return for food, and you would have been so impressed with my work ethic that later i would hitch a ride with you to some other place and there i would jump ship and find another boatie needing help. thats how i go to sail the world going from yacht to yacht helping out. and i had more fun crewing with the budget sailors . love from NZ
Sounds like a cool way to travel around and meet people! You just missed another great paint setion ;)
Ahoy, Nike & Karl
Enjoy your video's very much. Keep up the good work. Hang in there, you can do it.
Good for you. I`m happy things are working out for you. Pretty soon it will be time for a sail . To be honest I`m scared for you hehe. Good luck and Cheers from Canada.
Random Orbit Party! How awesome is that?
Ben and Teresa! Very Cool!
:+)
Beer and pizza almost always gets a lot of volunteers !
Well done from an old seaman,,,,,,,,,,,i hope you know about sacrificial anodes as this looks like a related problem. keep on and keep it up ...
god bless you keep your dream alive........ loved your videos because this is my dream too.......
I just discovered your RUclips channel, and watched them all. I have left a couple of hints along the way...
I hope that you will head to Europe via the eastern US, and maybe Bermuda... The coast of New England is beautiful. If you do, I may see you along the way.
have you thought of buying a sonic tester PR-82 (audio tester) $1200. you could sell it to a steel or alloy boat owner when you were done. easy to use. comes as a kit with instructions and liquid contact. there will be no question in your mind about the condition of your hull when your done. good luck and fair winds
iLove your determination. Keep going!
Actually, not a bad idea. In fact , awesome, because with some good music and beer and company the job is a hugely lost less boring. You met people ! Great ! Yes, sounds like a good primer but your new paint has to be compatible.
good Job !!
Nice bluetooth !!! (3:03, the guy "staff"). Congratulations, darling !!. The team work is growing... Alone on the beginning, 3 teammates on 3:43, 4 on 4:04, an finally 5,6 or even 7...(Working or drinking beer). Sanding Party seems was a great party, indeed.
Very pleased indeed for you. Don't change your music! It will remind me of you. Just past one of my own milestones to the sea. Maybe see you some day. Beer is on me.
eric
You could use a power washer for the engine room after degreaser...
Wish I could have been there to help!
I'm guessing you've run into more troubles. You didn't post any new videos Friday or today, Sunday.
If that's the case, I'm so sorry things didn't work out. You got some bad advice when buying the boat. A good survey would have uncovered all the boat's problems. On the positive side, your almost there and you've become quite adept at boat maintenance and repair. All the best to you!
Yep, new primer over the old primer. Should be perfectly fine as long as the old primer is in great shape (and it's chemically compatible with the new primer.) Anything that looks bad should be removed, and then the new primer applied.
Good job Nike! Glad to see your still happy! So where will you sail when you get Karl back in whe water?
I am thinking about going to San Blas first. Cause I know the area between here and there already and in case sth happens I am not too far from known terretory :). And if everything goes well then I might head up to Guatemala. That's the plan now...but you never know for sure until it happens ;)
Dear Ninja - Sailor.
Don't let us down , ~ 7000 addicted souls relying 0n You.
But seriously , hope all is well and You're having a great Time.
Hummel-Hummel.
Fight the good fight! Old boats can be a pain but they've got soul! Press on cuz im sure youll never have another shot at such a massive adventure! Karls design seems seaworthy if ya had to go through this much bulshit to fix up a boat might as well be a well designed one that can sail through blue water well.
Oh and remember sanding in Panama while were all at work, grass is always greener ;)
Since she's willing to share her dream, let's all chip in, to see her dream come true. It's really also what we all dream! (Expand the "About" link atop to reveal the hidden PayPal link.)
Cautionary note: All of the electrical connections I see in your engine area are the cheap automotive non-sealed type. You should replace them with sealed crimp on heat shrinking connectors. If the current from a connector gets into your bilge,or leaks to ground in an aluminum boat the electrolytic action will eat those holes in your bilge and elsewhere. Likewise different metals. a lost penny in a bilge will eat a hole in an aluminum bottom in 3 months in damp conditions.
Lead will do the same, a dropped fishing sinker/weight will eat through an aluminium hull. Any screw or rivet etc needs to be coated in duralac, or similar, before fitting although I am sure you already know that. It's also a good idea to cover the base of any fittings or fixtures in plastic tape before attaching to the aluminium. :)
She wrote on her facebook site, there is some problem with both of her cameras.
So I hope there is no major problem at all.
I updated the software of my GoPro and it seems to be working fine now, so that is good. My Canon camcorder is still not fixed, though. For some reason, it only works when I connect the battery to the charger...hm. Don't know. Will try to contact some service person and google for possible explainations...
well the new Friday but there's no episode 29 I hope all is ok
I had no idea Ben & Teresa were in your neck of the woods. Were they already there?
they arrived maybe two weeks ago, have left to film in Armila (in San Blas) now and will be back at the end of March, I think.
Great update, and I am glad things are going well. Your blog is great. I have been into photography for 30 years now, and am just starting to get into shooting some video. What kind of cameras are you using for this?
Thanks and stay safe.
Mostly, I am using my GoPro 3, white edition. And if conditions are good and steady and for audio I use a Canon Camcorder.
very cool
Thanks. I have been shooting with a Nikon D5100 but its not working well. Autofocus motor noise is picked up by the mike. Looks like a Go-Pro is in my future. Tim, we can use it to shoot the Judo club!
WhiteSpotPirates
Joseph Serb.... Sounds great......
I'm never meet a super girl, before! I'm just up to #28. But if you, are ever in Australia. And could like a free worker. Just call out! Justin
Question - I've never had a boat on the hard and it looks to me like your boat is resting on the twin keels. Is that safe and stable?
Love the the videos BTW.
yes, that is totally safe and stable. Those boats are made for this purpose so you can beach them in tidal waters. And they did put three supports on it, just in case...
Love to sail my boat after a bottom job, it's so much faster and responsive. You gon'na repaint the boot stripe?
Hey, I hope things are going well and all your sanding is done:) Go Karl! I just wanted to help anyway I can but the paypal link isn't working....it keeps kicking me to an error page. Am I the only one?
It is Friday, and there is no update... Perhaps you're discouraged. Here's a little inspiration: Everybody
Just found your videos, very inspiring. I have been there myself, you just have to do what you're doing, do the research, decide the best way to fix the problem and take it one step at a time with a little help from your friends.
Most metal hulls corrode from the inside, with aluminium it is important to make sure there are no loose bits of metal, like old screws etc sitting in the hull, different metals in a salty environment will cause galvanic corrosion. Keep the inside of the hull as clean as possible. Some information here
I'm a bit too far away to offer you help (Australia!) so I've sent a small donation to say "Good luck and tailwinds".
That engine mounting bolt has a problem at 1.46
hehe, yes, you are very right. Remember I took out those broken bolts from on of the engine supports? I had not remounted it yet cause the boat is up on the hard anyways...I did put the support on before I went back into the water though :)
the job could be done in 3 days down to bare metal with sand blaster ... and a sand blaster could have been made so easily .... if not bought cheaply .... oh well its all done. ..
Hi +jolllyroger1, I asked for a quote for sandblasting...and it was 3.000$...and you were not allowed to sandblast yourself...unfortunately. I would have preferred that for sure as well :).
Ahoy, Nike & Karl
+WhiteSpotPirates You would have ended up with a lot of holes to repair after sand blasting.
Nike, why did you sand instead of strip....stripper would have taken it right down to the metal? I guess environmental concerns were for most in your mind.
bet your scissors didnt last long cutting sandpaper
Wow! You are a smoker- you (and your sister) smoke cigarettes?
The average smoker spends how much while polluting/degrading/stinking herself with tobacco smoke?
The FACTis that the AVERAGE SMOKER spends the VALUE OF A HOUSE OR APARTMENT during her smoking career... that includes compound interest on the money stolen from you every day by the TOBACCO MAFIA of which the GERMAN GOVERNMENT IS A CLOSE ALLY. Helmut Schmidt- the great 90 year old living tobacco advertisement... how many hundreds of thousands of Germans he alone got smoking...
Buy a pack a day and over 40 years, with interest, that money would have got you 300,000 to over a million Euros- and you say you were involved in strategic investment strategy?!
Hey +jwsyt1, thx for that maths ;). Well, I smoke occasionally, every once in a while, sometimes not at all for many months. So I am not that worried about it, really. You can say the same about alcohol, driving a car (not to mention buying a car...every couple of years or so...do you have a car, man, they are quite the hazard to the world...), jumping on a plane (lots of mafia involved there as well, I am sure) etc. p.p.
I think my ecological footprint by living on a boat is rather small in comparison to others...And I also think that I live more healthy than many people.
And I don't think I ever said I was involved in strategic investment strategy...I studies Strategic Management, yes, and part of it was of course investment strategy, too, sure. But really, I don't live my life by calculating everything, more by what makes me happy.
Anyways, thx for letting me know about the numbers, that is pretty impressive...I will think about it next time I might be craving for a smoke.
Ahoy, Nike & Karl
again sorry if my comment was offensive to you- My hope is that you will be healthy and safe and free of the dangers of tobacco smoke.
WhiteSpotPirates what a class act you are...even in ur replies... a rarety. I've just started folowing you- futur sailer here..(working on starting a similar sailing journey)-just want to say you are an inspiration. can i ask...we're your parents able to foresee the future of what kind of person you would become when they named you or did you decide to live up to your name😉
happy sails Nike!
