Nlb Jones - seriously you have no idea what your talking about... His skilled elevated through out he whole career. For a man who taught himself to play drums, he was a genius... Shayne W. Blakey "Art Blakey's Great Nephew".
Art Blakey was one of the greatest Jazz and Bop drummers of all time. He was very musical. I would enjoy to ask questions to anyone of his family members!
Me too! He mentored so many of today's greats, and musicians who later became bandleaders. Every edition of the Jazz Messengers contained future legends. Art's work ethic was so remarkable. Tireless and unrelenting. Like a freight train on steroids.
Shayne Blakey i know it's been 5 years since your post but I'm just seeing it for the first time. Art Blakey is a massive and irreplaceable influence on me, and i just wanted to say I'm glad someone who knows better and with authority is out there speaking his name. thank you, brother. may your uncle forever rest in peace. he's earned it.
R.i.P. Art Blakey. Sorely missed. He was such a brilliant drummer, and really one of the most unique players in the drum world. He was heavily influenced by african drumming, next to his influences Jo Jones or Chick Webb.. He really played his soul out in every solo. More than a great technician, he was a lyrical player with a style that was both earthy and incredibly creative. Legend..
Bro you know nothing about the drums. Go listen to the drummer from slipknot instead. His unimaginative and woefully unimpressive playing is more your speed.

We love Art Blakey!
Art looks aged here. This must be a more fairly recent video. Blakey was one of the best jazz drummers to ever live.
Sad to see that Art's drumming skills did not advance that much through out his career, just sad.
Nlb Jones You don't know what you are taking about.

You do realize that Blakey was deaf, and had to play entirely by feel by 1986, right? You try playing a simple 4 on the floor when you go deaf..
He was deaf by then. Have some respect!
