  • Anders Leonard Zorn was one of the most prolific painters of the figure and a skilled draughtsman who was as fine a watercolorist as he was a painter in oils. Zorn was able to produce exquisite etchings, and found a vast clientele for his work, visiting America several times and doing many portraits including three Presidents. His work has the freshness of the natural world and he helped his town of Mora to be a visitors' haven just to see his museum and home.

It was nice to get some personal stories about the artist. Especially Zorn. Many books of his works is in Swedish. Of course, his work speaks for itself. When mentioning his sparse color usage. His pallet has become legendary. I used it for a year in my work to understand him better. He used primarily four colors. Titanium white, Ocher, cadmium Red and black. And technically white and black are not considered colors. He was amazing.

Love Andres Zorn. Brilliant artist little known in America. He was a contemporary of John Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla. William Chase. He paints the best water I have ever seen.

I recently watched a documentary of Carl Larsson, a contemporary artist who worked in the very same county in Sweden that Anders Zorn did. I'm strucked by the difference in technique (and skills) between these two painters. While Carl Larsson also depicted everyday life in Dalarna, he managed to make it flat and motionless. Zorn, on the other hand, brought each subject to life with depth, movement, shadows and reflections. Together with P.S. Krøyer, a Danish/Norwegian artist during the same era, Zorn is my all-time favorite among Nordic artists.

Wow. Some of the portraiture seriously striking, and I dont know that Ive ever seen a painter capture open water quite so realistically and as accurately & colorfully with the depth & movement as Zorn. Amazing..... Thanks again GLI!....

His self-portrait in the fur coat is one of my favorite paintings. I did not know he was a watercolorist! Thank you.

Although we did not exist at the same time, Zorn has accompanied me in my artistic process. His engravings taught me basics of drawing, and now 5 years later, it is his paintings that teach me about color management. without a doubt a great teacher to this days.
