- William Orpen was born in Ireland and from an early age was a precocious talent, destined for greatness, he would find himself as heir apparent to John Singer Sargent, who promoted the young painter as one of the finest artists in Britain, Orpen would serve in the British army as a war artist, and his many portraits of the period would gain him great honor and riches. He lived in a unique time in history and is now once again gaining important recognition.
Thank you for this splendid survey of one of the great, one of the greatest visual geniuses of 20th century art.
The world of art went mad in the 20th century. Miraculously real art survived in such figures as William Orpen.

Great video. To me his WW1 paintings were the peak of his artistic life.
My God. Truly captured the Grit & Grace of the human condition in his portraits & still's. To be able to capture the very soul, the attitude & nature of the subject through & around the eyes like that with paint.... incredible. This guy certainly knew how to read people, absolute genius, one I was totally unfamiliar with.... Thanks again GLI. Superbly presented & narrated.

Thank you. Nicely done. A small quibble would be that you please keep the volume/audio steady. It seems as if you are near and far from the microphone; at times you drift away. Tough to fix now, but perhaps in further commentary.

No doubt a vey talented artist. That said, I find his work to be very inconsistent. Great financial success is not necessarily the mark of great artistic merit. To each his own.
No doubt Rockwell was influenced by his humanistic portrayals.
