Masterfully broken down to the origin and foundation! As you've already said, digging all the way down the complex hole of EVERY nuance in CAN communication is often unnecessary to properly diagnose. I'm still a "kid" as far as my time doing diagnosis and repair, but in 4 yrs I haven't been wrong yet following this simple & logical approach. Understand the systems you're dealing with!! Thanks Lou ✌️🤘
wow thanks, I always felt this video was lackluster. But it really is simple. Sure the can data bus is a complicated thing, as far as operation and data but when it comes to diagnosis. I had 1 car in my existence that I actually needed to monitor can data and it still didnt help haha. most failures are shorted modules. Water entry. so in my experience the more complicated the problem seems, the easier it is to solve. I appreciate the nice comments. I will update this once day soon. along with my artwork :)
Difference between bad & good teachers. Most all things can be broken down to their origin, which is often the main ingredient in understanding the more complex bits that often don't need to be fully exploited like Lou mentioned here. I'm a music teacher & I've got over a decade of great results teaching people things in minutes my teachers sometimes spent months on 😂
Sweet! What dealer? We probably know the same people. Took me a few years to understand that the more complex a system , the more easy it is to diagnose! Haha
Thank you, I will redo this video , I am not happy with it. I hope it helped. If you need more help you can find me at www.cartechconnect.com thank you.
Glad to help! I will do an updated one soon. Sorry my artistic skills are not the best. Everyone over complicated the idea of CAN and how it works. Its so simple to diagnose. You just have to know what modules are supposed to be on what CAN and what is or is not communicating and its simple from there. Glad it helped thanks for the nice comments!
Thanks George! I will redo it one day to make it a little more seamless, people often misunderstand that the CAN date bus is not a physical object, that its a function. Hope it helps, Lou
Hey boss will unplugging the connectors 1 at a time and attempting to atart it still help you find the bad module if the CAN bus cards are possibly bad from water damage, like corrosion on solder points always concentrated at the 3 wire connectir on one end of all 3 CAN bus cards( 2 brown 1 white) Or do i have to buy a new one to even do the test of unplugging the connectors 1 at a time Oh and thank you for your time and your very valuable expertise
Great info thanks for the video ...i have an issue with c200 kompressor 2008 petrol ...overhead console not working no lights no vanity lights and ac blowing hot air on scanning got a code C14200 ( communication with rear signal acquisition and actution module has a malfunction ) what might be the issue as overhead is controlled by internal can system ...sometimes it work intermittently ..overhead panel lights work on door opening and ac also starts working and then again it won't work any help? thanks in advance
Ok so, if the central gateway was an issue, you would not be able to communicate with other modules. most likely. unless every module has codes stating issue with CGW and then the cgw has no codes or problems with anyone else. then possible.
Hi ! Thanks for your videos . In a gl x164 there is an eis and central gateway .which one is the master to transfer infos from different modules . The car starts fine .the c can is good .com to central gateway is fine but no com with eis cluster and all comfort modules ( water intrusion ) .I think there is a bad module who shut off the com to the eis but again the central gateway is good but comfort can is dead . Thank you
Hi mates; I'm working in a w164 with the same problem... the communication with drivetrain and Gateway it's ok, but it's impossible to acces with any confort module. No blinkin lights, no pass lights, washers no works, but there is communication with steering wheel electronic module. No faults, only in ABS is stored 1 related to problems in coherence signal from buttons locateds in central area of the dashboard. There is communication between doors (I can open and close all the windows from the driver's buttons), and if I perturb the Can signal in Clima, some alerts appears in the Instrument cluster display. The Can signal measured in Clima is correct. With the osciloscope low and high are mirrors between 0 and 2'5 in L and 2'5 and 5 in H. In this case, and if I'm not wrong... if Gateway is independent to Sam, is Gateway the unit faulty? Thank you very much for the video, and best regard's from Spain; Guille

Another very good important think is how you check up the faulties in modules when something goes wrong, for example ignition key not switch. How you follow up the procedure
I did a video of this on my channel, I would critique that measuring voltage on the bus is a necessary troubleshooting technique when problems occur as in my video ruclips.net/video/j-hNtBQ1gYc/видео.htmlsi=drutvi60dQXKziTo

Hello, exceptional explication 👍🏻 I want just to know in my GM cobalt 2.2 I changed my Engin control module, now I have any communication with TCM, BCM only with IC where a have some faults. The ECM must be programmed with the new vehicle to give access to the others control module ?
On my 2010 ML350 Bluetec, the CAN C Distributor in the passenger side footwell has a bunch of 2-pin CAN sockets and one 3-pin CAN socket. The 3-pin has me confused... it has CAN H and CAN L (green wires) and a third CAN pin in the socket which I have no idea what it's for (plug has a brownish/yellowish CAN wire in addition to 2 green CAN wired). Reading both the CAN H and CAN L wires while plugged in gives me 2.6v and 2.4v respectively. But the third wire reads nothing at all. What is that third wire?
@@MasterTechLou Thanks a lot for the reply. Let me apologize in advance because this is going to be a long reply and I really hope you can help me out because I suck at electrical issues... When I perform voltage test on any plug's CAN H and L while plugged into that distributor, I get 2.5v and 2.3v respectively which totals 4.8v. Isn't it supposed to total 5v? Also, when I unplug a specific plug from the distributor and run the test again on plugs that are still plugged in, I get 2.6v and 2.4v totalling 5v. Is this slight difference worth noting and does it suggest anything? I also ran an ohms test with battery unplugged... back-probed CAN H and L on random plug in distributor while plugged in and gor 00.0 on 200k ohms setting. But when I test CAN H or L to ground, readings fluctuate between 109 and 118 and settle around 116 on both CAN H and L when that 3-wired plug is connected. When the 3-wired plug is unplugged, the readings change to OL. I also tested differential resistance (one probe on CAN H and the other probe on CAN L) on the 3-wired plug itself while unplugged. On the 200k setting, it fluctuates around 32 to 35, but nothing on 200 setting. When I ran the same test while plugged in, the reading was around 60 on the 200 setting. Isn't it supposed to be 120? Sorry this is a long comment... I'm just frustrated by electrical/communication issues. I'm having no start, no crank issues. The problem first started while driving... car shut off and showed PRESAFE INOPERABLE message on the dash and parking brake light came up right before that message, then the car started again on the first try and drove me home. It did it several times over the course of a week or 2, even cutting off while idling. Eventually, it stopped starting or cranking completely. Scanner does not read ECU, Transmission, ESP, and some other modules, but reads the rest. There are communication codes and shorts and open circuits, too many to list. Yesterday, STAR scanner finally found the transmission and gave me codes "C100 and D10B, no CAN message from 'Engine management'"... the ECU was still not found. Today, scanner failed to pick up transmission again.
@ I think you are too focused on measuring. The readings are fine. You are on the wrong can. Just reading this you might have a bad engine control unit. In some models the engine module was a gateway to the rest of the drive train modules. So if you lost all you say you did, thats the answer right there.
Great video, I have an f10 starts then cuts off immediately , I got codes for short circuit to ground on terminal# 15 (1 2 3 N and WUP) also flexray not initiating at the gateway, ohm resistance is measuring 61.02 between 6 and 14 and voltage is positive on pin 16 would the issue be a wire harness or a module failure

Well said but i have a question. Mercedes w204 has some CAN Bus on the driver side. How do we identify the segments in which different Can bus function. How many units are under each individual Can bus?
The color of wires indicates which CAN data bus it is. As for how many? Thats based on options. You need to look at a wiring diagram also compared to the vehicles options list. Can bus connections also arent marked. So only way to know which module a connection belongs to is to ohm it from module to connection.
I have seen cases people read Can wires without using multi meter, they use testing bulb to derive issues partaining to the car. Please can u explain more on that?

@@alanjohnstone7091 there are a lot of control modules under both front floors. You will end up replacing everything down there. Its going to cost a lot.
all mb "cans" work the same. I have yet to see any that do not. in newer models the can will only be between specific modules, like from drivetrain to engine to trans to ism. for example I hope this helps.
hi, cuestion, do we check continuity or resistance on hi/low bus circuit? i will be working on a drivers seat problem, shop says drivers seat wont communicate w scan tool, and when passenger seat is operated both seats move, one forward one backwards at same time, so i will start with checking the hi/low bus, but which to know resistance specs. 2016 Mercedes S550, will be looking for Bus circuit board (L) location.
Hi, if seats move, can bus is working and its not a issue. Yes you can check continuity, problem is the can connectors are not labeled at the connector block. So you just check voltages at the door module or seat module/ seat switch whichever has the can connector. But to me this may be corrosion in a can connector but I think you would have more wrong. I wonder if someone replace a seat module with a wrong part.
@@MasterTechLou well, i was told they installed a new seat module at ft drivers side, and it is the same exact part number as the passenger ft. I hope and is the right part, reason for replacement, module was missing, any way i was getting around 60 ohms at can low and high w drivers module disconnected, pins 29 and 30, and also 26 and 27, but for some reason the 29 and 30 was showing cero ohms at times and finally stuck at cero, so i measure continuity to car body and shows continuity, so most likely you right, probably is going to be a moisture problem at can B connector. since circuits 29 and 30 are going to lt interior can B potential distribution electrical connector. thanks a lot, i will be working on that vehicle tomorrow.

Hi, Nice explanation. I have a 2007 Gl450 and there is no audio/sound from the radio/cd. The command turns on fine and appears to be running fine both on radio and cd but there is no sound from any of the speakers. Before there would be sound for about a min when starting in the morning and then nothing. Now there isn't any sound at all. I pulled almost every module in the car and opened it up to check for water damage--none found anywhere. Only one fault code: "incorrect can message from control unit n80" which is the steering control module. I replaced the clockspring and the module above the clockspring with OEM units from the dealer. Still there is no sound. I'm guessing the fault might be in a wire or a ground connection somewhere. Any thoughts? Where can I get the wiring diagram for the CAN bus for this car? Thank you.
Audio does not work on the can bus. Its a different animal. The most common problem is a glitched satellite radio module under back drivers seat. Normally unplugging and reconnecting helps but you need a scanner to read the audio system.

The solenoid on top of the charcoal canister is callled the secondary vent valve I believe,sorry.. that's the one the scanner says is permanently closed. It's brand new,I've tried 3 different new ones all still throw the same code. Changed the canister. Smoke tested ,no leaks. Changed the purge valve in the front. Changed the fuse and relay on the Sam module in the rear that controls the vent solenoid. I'm thinking I have a bad ground or the Sam is bad. Hopefully that's a better explanation. I have a 2003 bmx x5 that’s telling me that the dme has timed out! I can read all the other modules in the car but I can’t connect with the dme! It has been swapped out due to getting wet but I can’t read it from the obd port! It has 2.5 volts on the can bus wires but I can’t get it to come back on line with the rest of the system.... What’s the process to get it back on line??? Re-sync it???
Wesley Wood there are no processes, there is still a can data bus issue. A new module does not mean a good module. You still need to confirm power and ground at the dme.
Benz-Tech Lou P. I do have power and ground at the dme! I checked for terminal 15 and 30 and there is power there... Through the obd port, I can scan everything else but I see “DME timed out” when I try to read the codes. I get that information from the transmission module, that obviously connects to the dme.
Are you trying to do this with engine running or engine off? Im a mercedes guy, but when I used to scan bmw I noticed it would not scan right if the engine was running.
Benz-Tech Lou P. I can’t get it running... Long story short: My dme/trans module got soaked due to water back up in the box.. Now, I can crank the car, but the car won’t start! When I try to scan the system through the obd port, the scanner can’t read the dme.. I can read everything else but the dme. Dont know if this is beyond your knowledge or not, but do all modules communicate with the cgw or is that only for communication between the 2 different circuits? Reason i’m asking is because i want to hook up steering wheel controls of a r171 into the r170 canbus and was wondering if i could get those working on my radio that can handle those canbus inputs. But the r170 never came with steering wheel controls, so i dont presume a cgw knows how to handle those signals
To the best of my knowledge that is what the gateway is and refers to , is the module that can accept high and low speed can data bus signals to process them and allow them to talk to each other.
@@MasterTechLou so you think these steering wheel controls could potentially work on a radio that understands the canbus signal if i jack it up to the canbus?
@@RobbertW2 I don’t know personally. I don’t think they will as you cannot just add stuff to the can bus unless the company made it specifically with this intention in mind.

210 ended in 2002 and 211 started in 2003 The can bus on both are different. In 210 they are soldered together in 211 they are plugged into connections.
@@leowahlbeck2698 you will find the cables at each module, theres a solid green and a green with a white stripe twisted together. they connect to the other can wirings with solder, so there is no plug you will find with all the cans together, the solders are located in the passenger door sill wiring harness. these old ones are a pain because if you have a can issue you have to cut the wires from the solders and see when can comes back to life. thats all I can say via comments. best of luck.

If you are getting a F that means it’s connected. It depends on what scanner you are using. All modules in the ML163 are soldered together. So if you have a problem with one you have a problem with all.

Now Xentry isn't able to auto detect VIN when connecting, and when trying to communicate with IC it says unable to communicate, says possible cause is Power Supply, or unit that isn't supported, however I was able to connect the IC before it stopped detecting VIN, communicating with cluster etc. Is a replacement CGW module expensive? I know things would require codding, just don't know exactly how much of a hit i'm looking at If the CGW module is in fact toast. Subbed.
you cannot "short" anything just by connecting the scanner. this model has issues with relays supplying power to the obd. check fuse 73 in rear fuse box, if before 2009 this is a known issue. could be bad rear sam or relay. best I can say on youtube.
If you have voltage on can lines but cannot communicate with the sam. All you need are power, ground, and can data voltage. If you have all those and cannot communicate, then the sam is bad.
It was great video man, But I would have a question to you about the wiring system of cars THAT I often see that Startor demands CAN lines. Need advice, I have an 08 c350, and overhead control panel temp sensor marks -128 and the ac doesn't kick in cause of that, ac was working fine and it stopped working from one day to another.any advice?
Perfectly simple and a great idea. When its working. I get it totally. But in the real world the overburden of "convienence" features on modern vehicles has put literally hundreds of thousands of otherwise good vehicles into the scrap yard. Of course they are technically "repairable" its just that at dealership labour rates it exceeds the value of the vehicle. For transportation most of these features are pure fluff....do you really need "memory mirrors". Remember how hated single strand xmas tree lights were back in the day ? One light go out you'd spend hours trying to find the bad connection...same deal hear. It forced us to throw out the entire strand and buy a new one. Connections in a vehicle just cant hold up over time....moisture..vibration..temperature extremes take a toll starting in 5 to 10 yrs then stuff starts to "act up" or not work at all. Prior to retirement from LKQ we saw many...an absolutely beautiful Mercury Sable...zero rust perfect black paint...loaded...power everthing..leather...the good alloys...duratec V6...ABS...everything scrapped with only 134,000Kilos. But everytime the owner spent big$$$$$ something else went. The last straw was the ABS light came on ....he was done.....stripped and crushed.

most failures are shorted modules. Water entry. so in my experience the more complicated the problem seems, the easier it is to solve. I appreciate the nice comments. I will update this once day soon. along with my artwork :)

Thanks George! I will redo it one day to make it a little more seamless, people often misunderstand that the CAN date bus is not a physical object, that its a function. Hope it helps, Lou
Hey boss will unplugging the connectors 1 at a time and attempting to atart it still help you find the bad module if the CAN bus cards are possibly bad from water damage, like corrosion on solder points always concentrated at the 3 wire connectir on one end of all 3 CAN bus cards( 2 brown 1 white)
Or do i have to buy a new one to even do the test of unplugging the connectors 1 at a time
Oh and thank you for your time and your very valuable expertise
Correct if the CAN bus bar has corrosion on it, you will not get accurate guesswork. Have to rid the car of corroded parts.

Sorry for your issues, too much going on with your car to be able to give you any advice. Sorry.
So is it the central gateway causing problems if I’m having intermittent trouble which is not receiving can data from any modules?
Ok so, if the central gateway was an issue, you would not be able to communicate with other modules. most likely. unless every module has codes stating issue with CGW and then the cgw has no codes or problems with anyone else. then possible.

Hi mates;
I'm working in a w164 with the same problem... the communication with drivetrain and Gateway it's ok, but it's impossible to acces with any confort module.
Thank you very much for the video, and best regard's from Spain;

So just to be clear I should be able to go to central gateway and read faults and it should give me all errors ?

I want just to know in my GM cobalt 2.2 I changed my Engin control module, now I have any communication with TCM, BCM only with IC where a have some faults.
The ECM must be programmed with the new vehicle to give access to the others control module ?
Hello and thank you. No, programming only affects engine starting. Not communication. So you still have more issues.
@@pmo3448 its just a ground from the “gateway” that monitors that CAN. It wont affect can operation that I have encountered.

Thank you.

The can bus on both are different. In 210 they are soldered together in 211 they are plugged into connections.
@@MasterTechLou My bad, it is a late 2002 210. But do you have any idea where I can find those high/low cables? Are they findable in the engine bay?
@@leowahlbeck2698 you will find the cables at each module, theres a solid green and a green with a white stripe twisted together. they connect to the other can wirings with solder, so there is no plug you will find with all the cans together, the solders are located in the passenger door sill wiring harness. these old ones are a pain because if you have a can issue you have to cut the wires from the solders and see when can comes back to life. thats all I can say via comments. best of luck.
@@MasterTechLou Thank you very much for helping me! Best of luck for you too!

Hello, I have a similar code. I would like to know if it is that the ism its bad code 010187 communication with the tcm is faulty the message is lost and when i select N or D or R it gears sounds cracking down to where the ism is. thanks
Hello, yes it’s possible its the ism because the gear position doesnt match the trans.
Hi, I'm from Costa Rica, my English is very basic! I have a Ml 320 2002, w163, in limp mode, it will be bas esp on .... the problem is that the Mercedes scanner does not connect with the modules ... it only gives "F" in TCM (EGS), ECM, ESP, AAM .... the car starts and everything is fine, it just doesn't go over 2nd gear! Could it happen that a damaged module causes an error in the communication of the others ??? ...
If you are getting a F that means it’s connected. It depends on what scanner you are using. All modules in the ML163 are soldered together. So if you have a problem with one you have a problem with all.
Think I might have shorted my CGW on my w204 c250. Forgot I had engine running when connecting car to Xentry to try and change some settings on a virgin amg IC i just got..
I have a 2001 CL500 gear is not showing on instrument cluster. We can be the problem.
How can you check if a CanBus is the problem or a SAM module what are the differences?
If you have voltage on can lines but cannot communicate with the sam. All you need are power, ground, and can data voltage. If you have all those and cannot communicate, then the sam is bad.
It was great video man, But I would have a question to you about the wiring system of cars THAT I often see that Startor demands CAN lines. But as we know the Starter needs just 2 hot lines that one of them is always hot and another one is hot through relay. And why CAN lines for starter? P.s- I talk about mercedes cars on WIS/ASRA program
i have never seen a actual starter with can lines. I am not sure what you mean
so I have a can bus off fault the car starts but when place into drive or reverse the car shut of
Brad thats not really a can bus issue. If you want my help jump over to my site and I can surely help you fix this. Www.Cartechconnect.Com choose the $60 option for this. If it ends up being something easier I will surely reimburse you. Thanks
ok am about to go to your site now thank you so much love your videos btw

Man, where were you 3 days ago, I just dropped off my can at a shop. Took my 04 C230 Kompressor through a drive-through car wash and parked to dry off the remaining water droplets. Went to start it back up and no crank. Wakeup, EIS, cluster, and steering wheel unlock all work, but just no crank when turning the key. Checked all fuses and relays (good). Battery voltage (good). Put on my scanner and got these fault codes.
201D-001 Cataytic converter Effect is insufficent [P0420] (**already had this one)
2041-001 N80 (steering column module)CAN/signal interruption
2041-008 N80 (steering column module/The can message implausible
202D-001 N80 CAN message from control module AAC/TAC/CAN signal interruption
202B-001 CAN message from control modules EZS/CAN signal interruption
Cleared the fault codes, disconnected the battery for about two hours, and connected everything back up. All codes are gone and will not replicate because I can't talk to any of the modules. I accidentally tripped the SRS while inspecting the clock spring and angle sensor (steering wheel).. couldn't clear that code because there was no communication for the scanner to see the error.
I'm at a loss on this one.. There was no water anywhere that I could see.. but the problem happened after the wash and had never happened before.
Sorry to hear, hope it works out for you 🙏
Please I have an issue I was driving my car and then while driving it all the lights on the instrument cluster came on, all lights no single one left out and then car won’t move again while it’s still on. I moved from drive to park then drive to park still no movement then I turned it off and since then it never turn on again. Could you know what’s wrong with it please
Sorry you are having issues with the car.
It sounds like a module failed causing a communication issue in the car. If the car was recently washed or rained on I would check all fuses boxes for water but you will need a scanner to know what modules if any are communicating with the scanner.
Duuuuude , I needed this

Mastah Lou🙏...i think you officially answered situquestion..situation /question....I have 2003 e500 seems like it has interment connection issues..p0600...I have icarsoft mbii and Zurich obdii several days after getting home I scanned car for dtc's two came up in ecm p0600 and p0701 I think mass air flow ... with cel and lot of stored codes from low voltage and rear Sam issues which had been repaired ..and two marker lights out I went out to clear all codes and start fresh.
Yesterday when I went out attached mbii scanner it read all module codes ,however when I went to ecm it said that it did not know the codes..it had 11 codes in ECM..I couldn't erase or cleae any thing i in that module i was doing this while car is running....the tcm did not show a any code info for a soft limp mode car was in 3rd gear.. until shut of and on .
I turned car off plugged it n Zurich thirteen it read codes and allowed clearing of the mass code but p0600 remained in pending..when I went to CGW it read no dtc's even though car had error in in drivers Sam marker lights abc and others
I don’t like the zurich myself. I think it may not be helping you as well. But make sure to check the front fuse box and also trunk and door sills for water or corrosion. Definitely sounds like a module killing the CAN data bus.

hi guys,i have an w213 2015- and it can not diagnoze on obd,any sugestion,i try diferent pc"s but not,any trick to do or where to look, thx
hello, the diagnostic port is wired directly to the EIS, (electronic ignition lock control unit) located under drivers carpet on the left, that is the module that talks to all the other modules, its the gateway. youll need to start there.
@@MasterTechLou thx a lot,i find one emulators on the keyless ecu inside
Why that’s emulators needed

What if im still able to connect to the ob2?
Often times you are able to. But you have communication issues with certain modules. There are unlimited scenarios
@MasterTechLou yeah I'm going through this with 16 yukon it's saying "control module redundant memory performance"
Also with lost communication to high speed can bus
Tcm triggered MiL
hi how do i diagnose if the ecu motor communicates or receives data?
start by looking at live data unless ECU is dead.
Can you tell me what BCM, SAM and TIPM means ??
Body control module
Signal acquisition module
Totally integrated power module
All are basically the same with different names. Depends on the manufacturer.
Bcm many makes
Sam- mercedes
Tipm- dodge
Whatta great guy! Thee best!
This is cool but Mercedes also uses other forms of communication, LIN BUS, MOST, CAN BUS, and FLEX RAY BUS
thanks a lots😍😍

Is the bus serial, I assume it
I have no idea what that even means . :) nor have I ever even needed to use that word.
@@MasterTechLou is the data going across the bus serial data. Ie similar to information in a computer or would it be analog. My E550 kills my iPhone at startup and for another 10 minutes afterward and then it comes fine. We spent 3 days with apple tech support on the line trying to resolve it and could not. They connect ok from start.
If However in the first 10 minutes you can make a call but music support is garbled and then it comes right and works correctly which makes no sense to me. All the firmware is up to date and their is no codes to deal with.

@@johnbates606 ok that “serial” data is beyond me and simple diagnosis. Almost 100% of the time phone issues are the phone. A small percentage is updating the software of the audio system components which only a dealer can do.
Where are the cans located ?
Need advice, I have an 08 c350, and overhead control panel temp sensor marks -128 and the ac doesn't kick in cause of that, ac was working fine and it stopped working from one day to another.any advice?
Cans on sides of floors in sill areas. Also most likely a bad sensor or wiring to the sensor.
Thank you so much sir
Thank you so much!
