A sunrise hike up Roy's Peak | Wanaka, New Zealand

- With stunning panoramic views across Lake Wanaka, Roy's Peak is the perfect way to experience true South Island beauty.
Start: Mt Aspiring Road, Roys Peak Car Park
Length: 16 KM return
Duration: 5-6 hours
Date walked: August 2022
Things to Note:
- Track closed for lambing from 1 October to 10 November. Please check with Department of Conservation’s Wanaka office on the track status.
- There is no water available on the track, please ensure you have sufficient supplies as it can be very hot in summer.
- During peak summer season the car park can be very busy, so please consider alternative transport to the start of the track. Shuttles and taxis are available, or consider riding a bike or walking along the Waterfall Creek track to the start.

We've had our eyes on this hike for several months now (literally, we look at it every day from town 😂), but wanted to save it when all the mountains were covered in snow. Was definitely worth the wait!
We were meant to walk this on the same day as you but our friend injured his foot. All I can say is THANK YOU. This walk/view deserves it's popularity, and it doesn't look better than when covered in snow. Beautiful video.

You should be alright! Going up is tiring, but descending is always rougher on the legs. Just take it slow and use poles if you got them. At least you got great views to distract you 😊

What to say? Wow! A lot of effort to get there, but definitely, from this vantage point, appears to have been worth it. That was beautiful.
The hike up isn't the most interesting, so doing in the dark is a good way to motivate yourself getting through it quickly; especially when you're trying to race the sunrise 😅. A great spot though! Probably the most popular hike in Wanaka
@Chris and Danya Hahahahahahaha.....so this one's all or nothing. One heck of an "all" at the top, though. Tried one more today myself, but got rained out on top of the streams being high after all the snowfall. Was fun while it lasted. Maybe one more tomorrow before heading home and packing. Still, been a couple good weeks getting ready.
Hopefully the weather stabilizes while you're here. It's been crazy lately
@Chris and Danya I've been watching that out of curiosity as well as knowing what to expect. I began to wonder who needed winter with some of the summer weather I've seen. Between the weather and the recent quake (didn't see much reporting on it, so figured it must not have been too bad), I thought perhaps I should adjust my expectations on what to expect. My trip is, obviously, not even a footnote compared to the well-being of everyone who's been flooded out or otherwise harmed. My heart goes out to them. I didn't think cyclones were something you guys got very often, but don't know. Regardless of the weather, though, I'm looking forward to seeing new zealand. If it rains every day, I'll enjoy every moment and, perhaps, turn the hiking time into helping with repairs or whatever is needed. Either way, it will be a great trip
If there's a silver lining about the rain, is it makes the first even more beautiful!
Luckily the South island hasn't been anywhere near as bad as the North island, but the weather has still been very bipolar.
Regarding the quakes, we've felt two of them in the past 2 weeks, but haven't seen anything about damage reported anywhere. I think one was technically big because of the scale it registered

Great footage! I'm surprised you can fly a drone there! Isn't it a national park?
I don't believe it's in the national park, but I found out after the fact you can't fly there without permission 😬
What a vlog. Nicely done. I am planning to do this end of August this year. How deep is the snow and the icy condition? did you use any ice axe or the walking pole would be enough ?
It really depends on how much snow there has been recently. Sometimes the mountain is pretty bare if it hasn't snowed in a while. We went after a recent snowfall and it was about shin to knee deep in areas that hadn't been tracked.
Up to the popular view point is just a 4WD track so easy walking on switch backs, just a bit steep. Once you leave there and start going up to the summit, it gets quite a bit steeper and there will most likely be steps in the snow which can be pretty slippery.
We didn't carry an ice axe, but we saw one or two people that did. We also saw people in skate shoes, which blew our mind haha
We had microspikes which helped a lot after we left the first view point. I'd say if you're planning on going off track on the summit, I'd take an ice axe just to be safe. There was one part near the end of the video where I was off track and it was a pretty steep drop off on both sides and it was kind of sketchy. There's actually areas on the summit that are "off track" but completely fine, so depends on the steepness I suppose.
Just be smart about it. Think to yourself "if I fell right now without an ice axe, would I able to stop myself?" and don't go anywhere where that answer is "probably not". 😅

Stunning video! May I ask if the view from the summit is more beautiful during sunrise or sunset (when will the sun be touching the lake)?
We haven't done it during sunset, so not exactly sure which is better! You should be able to find photos of it during sunset though!
Don't believe the sun will ever touch the lake since it's surrounded by mountains. If you mean when the sun will be reflecting off the lake, I would guess around 11 AM, but depends on the time of year

Is it easy to identify the trail even with snow?
Yep! It's even with fresh snow it's pretty well defined since it's such a well used track
Very cool video. Lots of questions. What month was this? Track didn't look that well marked from that first view point, if you were earlier, do you think it would be easy to see the way to the top in the dark? And lastly, do you think crampons are essential for that last bit from the first viewpoint?
We hiked this in August 2022. The track to the top may not be marked but it is very well defined since it's such a popular trail. I suppose if there was fresh snowfall, the track may be a bit more difficult to find.
We didn't use crampons, but we have microspikes. They're probably not 100% necessary, but it definitely made it a lot easier. The track can be kind of steep, and with the snow/ice steps, the microspikes help a lot

Do you need to take permission for flying drone at that hight
I'm not sure to be honest, I think so. I was only flying my drone because there was another group there flying theirs. Drone laws in NZ are pretty strict unfortunately

The area has has high aircraft traffic from helicopters and paragliders, and drone flying is illegal. Drone operators have been prosecuted for operating on Roys Peak. I’ve had a near miss from a drone while flying Roys, and the ‘pretty strict’ rules are both necessary and, unfortunately, often ignored. No harm done in this case, but the point must be made. Cheers.
