PlayStation 5 Review: Power, Thermals, Storage, DualSense + HDMI 2.1 Analysis
HTML-код

- PlayStation 5 is here and while it's not perfect - HDMI 2.1 features are lacklustre - the overall package is still a home run from Sony. Rich goes over thermals, power consumption and display features, picks over the storage situation and enthuses over a beautiful UI.

The David Attenborough of gaming
🤣🤣
lol True!!
Very good, a high standard indeed.
Oh that’s good
Abit more sellout than Attenborough is.
Yup, it's becoming ever more tiresome but this is another 4K mastered video that we're waiting for RUclips to process into high quality 1080p and full 2160p. Watch now if you like or come back later for the best quality video encode.

Digital Foundry's technical knowledge of everything related to gaming makes IGN and Gamespot look like Tiny Tots.
Too tall, 2/5 stars.
@M. Nurhaikal not really, both of those companies are known for click bait titles, inconsistent reviews. IGN does some really frustrating stuffs, but lets be real, gamespot is not any better.
I hate IGN soo much
Yeah, the problem with IGN is that they have so many different reviewers of varying intelligence and awareness. Some of them praise shitty sports games year after year with no improvements on the last, while others actually award awesome games like Divinity: Original Sin 2 a 9.6/10
IGN is the worst site you can read. There’s nothing like Digital Foundry at analyzing tech stuff. Indeed I’m a Metallurgist so I love Digital Foundry. ;D

Uh, 1 million subs is a very successful channel.
@@channelthechannel Thanks for clearing that up. I wasn't aware I asked if it was successful or not though. 1 million isn't low by any stretch but in comparison to some other channels, it's a drop within an ocean.
@@mcgruber For a channel that delves into more of the technical side of gaming, it's a drop within an ocean? Sorry, but it's not. Different subjects have different sizes of audiences. If you expect a channel like this to be as large as some of the ones aimed at the general populace, then you're a fool. For a channel like this, it's very successful.

I thought ps4 pro was an improvement on the ps4
my favorite fact about this next generation is that it sounds like all of the flaws and issues with the system currently can all be patched in the near future (and theoretically as soon as launch day).
The main issue for me is the lack of storage space on those cansoles, it was already annoying with 1to (~850 go in practice) on ps4 so I can not imagine how bad it would be with ps5 games .Plus buying a new ps5 compatible ssd isn't cheap at all
@@elbalalaw1781 Just wait and see. By the end of 2021 leading into 2022 both Sony and Microsoft will release variant bundles of the PS5/XSX with larger SSD storage configuration sizes.

@@HermesderWetterbote
I guess we have to use it first hand to know, I find the rumble for the Switch really weak for most games and I’m assuming it’s due to how small the little haptic coil thingys are, hopefully it doesn’t get abandoned by devs like it did on the switch.
667Gb is such a shame, literally the only negative aside from not being able to get hold of one.

I love DF they always come with precise tests we need to know
I know it's not the main focus of the video but it's great to see PS4 titles finally locked at 60 FPS. I'm still rocking a 1080p TV, kind of crazy how the majority of games couldn't handle 1080p 60 during PS4/XBone, and now we jumped to 4k 60 all of a sudden. Price tag is quite hefty but considering what hardware you are getting, it's not too bad. Hopefully I will be able to buy one of these sometime next year once this mess is over.
4k native 60fps??? It s a dream. Not possible yet on ps5.
@@duffgan8845 its literally the default.
I’m also using a 1080p display with 240hz. I’d really love it if they had an option to run games in graphics mode at 1080p while still maintaining the 60fps. Seems like it would be something completely doable due to saving processing on not being at 4K.
@@duffgan8845 Clearly possible as some games already confirmed, but far from necessary. Native 4k is just a term for 'cool kids' to get exited and to debate of forums. Give them dynamic resolution and 99% of them will not even notice the difference.

Rich's way of giving Knack a very subtle diss.
I think what’s interesting to note is that the way linear actuators (dual sense vibration, Nintendo HD Rumble, iPhone Taptic Engine) work in pretty much the same way as speakers do, and can thus easily turn audio signals into haptic sensations.
It's great that the engineers at Sony remembered to account for changes in atmospheric pressure and temperature between the base and the top of the console.

Shouldn't the intake fan be at the bottom?
Very true, it reminds me of my journey to the top of Everest.

This video... you're hearing it, but I'm FEELING IT
The biggest issues are the unexplainably low storage space coupled with the fact that there isn't external storage support, as well as not supporting 1440p natively. I also don't know why people are defending sony so vehemently on that second point, it just applies to people who play on a monitor and don't have room for a big 4k tv. I don't know how we're even having that conversation in 2020, where people may have to use a 1080p monitor on this generation of console.
There is support for external hard drives for PS4 games.
As far as I’m aware the external HDD or SSD will be supported on ps5 it’s just not before launch
I have an LG Ultrawide (from work) and I wished my PS4 Pro would support it!
1440p will come soon
PS4 actually does fully support 1440p, except that you can't turn it on when you want, which is even more idiotic. Some backwards compatible PS4 games run perfectly natively in 1440p on the ps5 in 60 fps, but if you want EVERY game to run in 1440p on your monitor then you can just go fuck yourself and have 1080p lol

I would like to hear impressions on the Tempest Audio feature. Sony made a big deal of it, and I think that audio quality overall is very underestimated.
Currently its a bit limited to the speaker location, and the profiles of HRTF for headphones are limited, Sony says they will expand the options and profiles gradually, I think it's a bit early to see the potential of Tenpest Audio
Sony makes a big deal about all of their custom add-ons, but it should be comparable to other 3D audio on the market. It just depends on how well developers make games around using it. Last gen sony's 3D audio wasn't supported by a lot of games because it was a pain in the arse for developers. Most likely all 1st party games will take advantage of it, but it seems there will still be a lot of games that are multiplat that won't support it mainly because the norm is developing for Dolby surround which pretty much everything uses. But between tempest, and dolby atmos, I can't see there being much of a difference really. Sony said they want to support hundreds of sound items which sounds like it could be really cool, but even dolby which supports hundreds of sound items says they stick to 32 because having more is not necessarily better and creates a confusing soundscape. But the PS5 headset may still be a pretty slick headset regardless. I haven't seen the specs on it yet, but it may be a big step up from the ones players are using now with or without the 3D audio
Tempest 3D Audio is only supported via USB headsets, Pulse 3D, or the DualSense headphone jack at launch... I am extremely curious if we can access Tempest 3D Audio via PS5 USB Audio Out to a DAC and headphone amp. I have an audiophile headphone setup and was previously using the digital audio optical output - which is absent on PS5.
@@magickman152 tempest 3d audio solution is by far the best in market with incomparable quality and this was said by digital foundry and other tech professionals themselves. @@humbertochaves3813 and the series X lol yalls console cant even run gears 5 natively
@@humbertochaves3813 sure bud
They had a supersampling mode on the pro for 1440p, im sure they're working on it.
@@humbertochaves3813 yh, I totally agree...i just wanted to play Assassin creed and spiderman in 1440p 😶
Nice to see both console makers turned things around from last gen and knocked it out of the park hardware wise
I'm so glad Sony came around on backwards compatibility. I was worried there for a while that they weren't going to focus much on it, but it looks like most of the PS4 library functions, and quite well at that based on what you guys have shown. I wasn't planning on a PS5 in the near future, but with stellar BC, I might change my stance on that.
Thank you for putting this video together for us.
Finally an honest review of the PS5. Well done.
This is the only PS5 review that matters
Digital Foundry is so underrated!
@@TheDV-ANT They're so underrated that they have a million subscribers and get promoted by billion dollar corporations while getting interviews with the industry's leading professionals.
Plucky underdogs to be sure!
NXGamer is highly underrated.
@@idglet9565 they are pretty underrated compared to likes of Austin Evans and Marques Brownlee. DF deserves the attention just as much imo.
@@TheDV-ANT You're right actually, those channels are in completely different lanes.
All the coverage of the controller has me so excited for the console. Seems like it will even exceed expectations once it is in my hands.
lmk how it feels
I had no idea who digital foundry was 2 months ago, now I see them upload and watch immediately l
"You're hearing it - I'm feeling it." is my favorite Rag N' Bone Man song.
I know you won't really see this comment, but most of the people who watch your channel watch for your fairly unbiased coverage of technology and your critical yet not too harsh analysis on games. It used to be that ps fanboys used to call you xbox shills for covering the ps5, and now xbox fanboys are calling you shills for covering the ps5. Please note that this is not obviously representative of your entire community but is nothing but a vocal minority. A very vocal minority at that one though. It's ironic that they're doing the corporate shilling for free while accusing you for getting paid out of "shilling".
Pretty sure its sonies saying Microsoft is paying for them leading up to this launch. Purely on the basic they've been talking much more about xbox because simply they've had the information for much longer.
I don't understand how people can still aggressively console war and hate on Digital Foundry, even after seeing what it does to the team. Some people are just cruel and don't deserve the amazing work DF is doing.
@@mushypeas5313 ?
Fanboying has been what it seems like at an all time high. I wish people would enjoy their consoles and let other people enjoy theirs.
@@mushypeas5313 both are terrible. I can't read a comment section about either with some stupid fanboy comment.
I know there are flaws but I'm just so happy to finally have my Playstation matching my PC resolution (4K), I sold my slim last week and the switch from PC to PS4 was very irritating.
The fact that the support for 8K isn't working yet means that it must be geting patched in at some point, so that means that 1440p could also make an appearance in the future.
I'm so excited to get mine on 19th, it's probably the most significant jump in tech for consoles that we've ever seen and I'm looking forward to the experience!
Great videos highlighting all of the pros and cons!
4K at 30fps tho.
@@vxvxcvxcvcvxc some games do 4k60 but turn off effects like ray tracing
I got $300 credit in store for a PS4 Pro which i thought was a good deal.
Awesome review and tech info breakdown! Thanks. 👍🏼
I just love that “next gen” is actually next gen with both systems. It’s a true generation leap. Exciting times where gamers are the real winners here, and this only improved games. Home run for both Xbox and PlayStation
I don’t think it “feels” next gen however. To me personally it feels like the day I upgraded day 1 with my ps pro (controller excluding)
Also think we will be upgrading our consoles a lot more sooner now, 2 years tops (incremental upgrades) alas iPhone etc
@@R1ckmister you crazy man. This is the biggest jump period. Last gen consoles were absolutely weak
@@R1ckmister ... i’m pretty sure they said you won’t be seeing another for 3-5 years
@@R1ckmister You do realize that the Fusion based APUs using low-power Jaguar cores were already two, almost three years outdated before the console came out. These consoles not only have a very impressive processor that goes against the Intel processors they're poised against, their gaming performance is exceptional. These consoles are a massive upgrade.
only PS5 experience is truly next gen
Richard, some reviewers are saying they are getting less than three hours controller battery life on games with a lot of haptic feedback. Did you get a chance to test this?
Apparently it's as low as two hours when playing Astros Playroom
10 to 12 hours but with astro it was left on sitting in game, vibrations the whole time and then only a couple of hours but who really does that lol.And don't forget it's a game to show off every sense of the controller and not every game will need to do that.
All right thats dumb as fuck, its like saying that your new shinny Smartphone battery only gets 3 hours of battery testing it watching a 4k video with full bright.
@@jamierobertson2018 10-12 is still crap though, even then that's the MAX it'll get... Wtf??
From what I've read it's a bigger drain with games like Astro due to the intensive nature which makes sense. Expect similar battery life to the PS4.
The new controller looks much better.
You mean Xbox
Yep the DualSense is really incredible
@@tacobananachicken9128 pretty sure he doesnt

I appreciate the knowledge drop. Hope you are having a good day.
Thank you for showing how this looks on a 1440p monitor because it’s such a bummer sony decides to not acknowledge it with such a powerful system would have no problem with it
Sony is going after people with home 4k display tvs, not people who use monitors.
@@MedIevalCyrax other thing that is strange is that 8K label on the box. Yet no 8K available on the menu.
@@UltimateAlgorithm That's probably there for future compatibility with future specs of Blu-Ray and streaming media.
@@luckymouse1988 they better patch it up on release date. Because things like that can cause quite of controversies. Especially when it comes to labels and adverstisement. AMD get a lot of flak last year because some Ryzen 3000 CPUs fall short of advertised boost by around 100hz to 50hz.
@@MedIevalCyrax well they sure aren't going with people who want the absolute best in home theater (hence why they skimmed on a not fully certified hdmi 2.1 cable that can't do 8k and can only do 4k/120 via lower chroma sub sampling.
There's a reason why it won't turn on 8k on an 8k TV and it's the Same reason the 4k/120 doesn't have all vrr and stuck with 422 chroma.
It's a 'high speed hdmi " cable (as seen on the outside labeling of the cable) which if you look up with the hdmi forums is the name for hdmi 2.0b cables.
Hdmi 2.1 cables are labeled" ultra high speed hdmi " this one IS NOT THAT
The lack of support of 1440p really grinds my gears
Hey who knows they will probably add it in the future
1440p is literally garbage anyways lol
@@volsavious2319 when it’s 1440p at 60fps with ray tracing or 4K at 30fps with ray tracing I’m choosing 1440p anyday
Same. It's kind of insulting that even though half the games on PS5 seem to run at 1440p 60 fps, I'll only be able to see 1080p 60 ON MY 1440P MONITOR. JUST LIKE LAST GEN.
The most annoying thing is they include 720p, who the hell has or buys 720p screens in 2020? Do they still even make them? 1440p is a brilliant middle ground
the go to channel for in depth analysis. awesome work.
It’s sad Sony skipped Variable Refresh mode and Latency mode! Microsoft did great job on Quick Resume and no delay with game and controller.
They'll come in feature updates

@ Raheek Virk
It shows Sony ment the PS5 for 2019, and also under estamated what Microsoft would do. Which is why I think the PS5 mid gen upgrade will come a little sooner than usually is the case.
Here's the problem, the Nano99 does NOT have VRR so the mention of it missing is not necessarily true
