Photosensitivity is the amount to which an object reacts upon receiving photons, especially visible light. In medicine, the term is principally used for abnormal reactions of the skin, and two types are distinguished, photoallergy and phototoxicity.[1][2] The photosensitive ganglion cells in the mammalian eye are a separate class of light-detecting cells from the photoreceptor cells that function in vision. Sensitivity of the skin to a light source can take various forms. People with particular skin types are more sensitive to sunburn. Particular medications make the skin more sensitive to sunlight; these include most of the tetracycline antibiotics, heart drugs amiodarone, and sulfonamides. Some dietary supplements, such as St. John's Wort, include photosensitivity as a possible side effect.
Particular conditions lead to increased light sensitivity. Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus experience skin symptoms after sunlight exposure; some types of porphyria are aggravated by sunlight. A rare hereditary condition xeroderma pigmentosum (a defect in DNA repair) is thought to increase the risk of UV-light-exposure-related cancer by increasing photosensitivity.

Main article: Photosensitivity in animals
Photosensitivity occurs in multiple species including sheep, bovine, and horses. They are classified as primary if an ingested plant contains a photosensitive substance, like hypericin in St John's wort poisoning and ingestion of biserrula (Biserrula pelecinus)[3] in sheep, or buckwheat plants (green or dried) in horses.[4]
In hepatogenous photosensitization, the photosensitzing substance is phylloerythrin, a normal end-product of chlorophyll metabolism. [5] It accumulates in the body because of liver damage, reacts with UV light on the skin, and leads to free radical formation. These free radicals damage the skin, leading to ulceration, necrosis, and sloughing. Non-pigmented skin is most commonly affected.
It is so painful… I have to scratch my arms all day in summer. . .😢
I'm sorry to hear about your experience
Doesn't it help to use SPF 50+ sun cream? For me it solves the issue
Me too 😢
I know, I was hoping for some good advice other than don’t go outside all summer and just wear long sleeves while it’s 105 outside
I have to wear long sleeve shirts when I’m outside and it doesn’t matter how long I been out. I’m very sensitive to the sun after I hits menopause and feels like ants crawl over my body and cause me to scratch. 😢😢
Love this video straight to the point easy to understand.
The sun burnt my foot .everyone thinks im lying but im not .i was standing directly in the sun for a good 5to 10 minutes.i came in my house were it was cold .my foot started to itch i thought it was a bug bite but hunny when i rubbed my foot the skin cane off .im sure the sun did it 😮
I am so happy to watch this video. It really gave me correct and enough information. I could understand what types of allergies n skin conditions happen to our body. Doctors never give a correct and complete picture. Thank you. God bless u all.

How much of a role does complexion play here? I’ve got 10 days off and want to get in the pool but now I have to take this medication. If complexion and sunblock won’t save me, I did notice that the bit about covering skin would so, I’ll buy a few long sleeve under armor shirts for the pool.
I am photo sensitive. I burn even with sun factor 100. I have to be super careful. My photo sensitivity is really bad.
@@roytranter8806 Secondly, my photo sensitivity is starting now in March. If I am sitting in the sun, I wear sun glasses for like 12 hours a day - polarised sun glasses, wear a hat and I wear 3/4 length sleeve tops and trousers. You can still enjoy the sun, you have to just slap on the sun screen, slap on a hat, cover up and carry a little fan, just helps with the heat.
@@roytranter8806 Is SPF 100 better?
Sunburn protection that is only marginally better.
Properly applied SPF 50 sunscreen blocks 98 percent of UVB rays; SPF 100 blocks 99 percent. When used correctly, sunscreen with SPF values between 30 and 50 offers adequate sunburn protection, even for people most sensitive to sunburn
@@roytranter8806 Photo sensitivity can't be cured, but you can manage it easily. You just have to be organized. Have spares of your sun screen, have a spare bag ready with all your stuff - sunscreen, towel, hat, polarised glasses. I have like 4 pairs of sun glasses, 4 sun screens stocked up. :-) I am not a Vampire I promise. I also love the sun, so it is a bit of a pain, I will never ever get a tan. I have Irish skin and my lovely late Father, had photo sensitivity. So I inherited it from him. I have had it since very young.
@@roytranter8806 Me too. Well see what the doctor says and take it from there.
I have suffer never burning but those red spots on my arms i don't know how I can live if i have to avoid sun no way i do that i need sun 🌞
I have the same condition. I have to cover my whole body. I got one question tho can I go out at night at least?? Please let me know
This is now getting even worse because the magnetosphere is reaching a weak point due to the magnetic North pole moving towards the 40 degree mark, and because of increased Solar flares and CmE's from the Sun hitting the ground in the form of UV radiation.
the artificial race wont last long EYE AM
@@jahhosama They're on their way out and fast ⚡☀️
They outta here
I get hives in the sun. It started about 5 years ago. It’s awful. But when it happens allergy pills like Claritin help prevent/reduce it. I cover up and wear the highest sunblock. I’m trying Astaxanthin - to build sunblock from the inside out. Hoping it will help.
Photosensitivity can be challenging, but it's great to hear that you're taking proactive steps like using sunblock and trying Astaxanthin to manage it. ❤️
👍
Kindly do iGE test
I can't be in the sun long it itches and burns
same😥
You have not mentioned any medical treatment for sunburn allergy.
There probably aren't any medication treatment for photosensitive
vitamin B3
@@gawddessaura does it really help? Niacinamide?
@Manvir Bhangal I researched and apparently vitamin B3 is supposed to help. I will update and let you know after my cruise in 2 weeks. I always end up with really bad, painful, itchy rashes after being in the sun... I've started taking a liquid B vitamin complex every day, so hopefully, it does work. The true test will be when I'm out in the sun all day during my vacation.

What about Photo sensitivity and HRT
@Gail D Have you noticed a connection between the two? I was wondering the same thing.
@@anjirichards8377 There might be a connection
@@gaild1058 wow! If you find out any information, please be so kind as to let me know. Thanks.
I've photosenstivity caused by medication. On Sunny days I get Burned even if I use SPF 50.
It's essential to avoid prolonged sun exposure and wear protective clothing even with SPF 50, as some medications can increase photosensitivity. ❤️
