The best thing I learnt in this video is that the red thing he’s holding at the beginning is called Jake
Gabrielscake I read your comment before the video started playing.. that was hilarious !
Noprop why thank you 😊
I mean. I just watched this for the 3rd time and only this time after reading your comment did I notice that. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
😭
But i got confused at the end, it looks like the white wing was jake at the end when the camera man said it. Sooo weird
"depending on the size of the jugs, you might want to position your hands differently"
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

( . Y . )
can confirm this
@ g ford- welcome to climbing jargon
Really happy to hear about some easy informational stuff as opposed to just mental climbs. As fun as it is watching really hard and technical routes, there's definitely a lack of resources for people who aren't veterans yet. Thanks, and keep it up!
that was really positive feedback
If that was negative feedback, I’m scared to know what positive feedback would be
@WungusBill tbh I learn faster by listening, watching, and reading 😅
@WungusBill tbh that’s how I learn physical skills. I just watched a few videos and asked my friend about it and then I managed to do V8 with near perfect technique. Got to the top but my friend had to help me down but I remembered I was a bit scared of heights. I even learned how to bike by just listening to my parents explain it and watching them do it. You don’t develop strong connective tissue but you can learn technique and control.
Agree. Our Boldering hall has like 10 easy paths and for someone who never bouldered and has a fear of heights, those were already challenging for me.
Just starting out at 54 yo. This is so helpful and FUN to know. Never thought these holds were so creatively designed
Oh glad to hear it, I'm 40 and have been climbing for a while but iv only decided to try to train for lead climbing recently so glad new climbers aren't all in their teens/ early 20s. :)
Enjoy!
@PogChamp you can do a lot with technique. the fitness builds up slower than when you were young but of course you will get stronger eventually.
@@tracy9157 Almost 56 here! And one year post lumbar spinal fusion. Love the sport! Much easier on the joints than classic gym workouts, I find.
@PogChamp! Wdym like couldnt do literally anything? I think anybody regardless of age with a decent level of fitness and strength will have a really great first climbing session and excell even more after going a few times. I know for a fact i enetered climbing 1 month ago at 16 year of age and came to it natually, i think the fact i had been going to the gym for 8 months helped, and my ability to lift my own bodyweight. However climbing longer 11-15m routes in the gym near me has encouraged and made me realise improving my endurance is super necessary.I am doing cardio often ish now to achieve that and tbf i can see why my endurance on the walls is pretty bad.
Ok this is just a given.
*everyone hates slopers*
I like slopers lol, not all tho
I like them only if I can hold on them, otherwise avoid them and don't look at them. Ever
@Ana Zervigon crimps actually make for some good routes, there is no fun crux without a few crimps here and there
You're a really good teacher Jake - thanks so much! Would love to see you doing more basics videos, please - your explanations are calm, unintimidating and super clear...
I watched this video back when it first came out as a beginner
And I just want to say ,looking back on it, this was a really huge help.
7:28 sounded like the old sound effect for when you took damage in Minecraft
Lmao you're right "ueh ueh ueh" didn't know there's a new one
This was super helpful as someone who has been climbing for about 6 weeks. I’d figured out what slopers, jugs, and crimps were more or less, but the tips on how to position hands/fingers are enlightening. Now I just have to actually put it into practice 😅
I've gotten into climbing recently, and these beginner videos have been exactly what I've been looking for. Thanks so much y'all! Much love from Idaho.
Line Level Media where are you climbing ?? Asana ?
Yep! Couple months in now.
Line Level Media oh that’s awesome, I climb there whenever I’m home from college and then I’m planning on a membership this summer !
Stay on the walls potato kid
You-da-ho
Thanks for the video guys. Jake's explanations are really clear and easy for beginners to understand, so thanks and keep it up!
Your tip on sloaper really helped me solve a problem I've been stuck on for a bit! Thanks! Love your videos!
Loved the vid. I literally started climbing yesterday in a lesson so this was a clear video that enabled me to reflect on the holds I encountered in certain problems and how the instructor had me approach them. Subscribed to this channel as you all seem so nice and calm about helping beginners
Thank you guys for everything you do. I just started climbing at 39 and im completely obsessed with it..
New to the sport and stuff like this being on RUclips is brilliant, thanks a lot mate
Dude, your calves are insane! Thanks for making this vid too
Thank you for the video, it teaches a lot! I couldn't find any proper videos showinf the grips in detail and yours is great.
Outstanding video for the novice, myself! I was looking for a video for a beginner and you nailed it, cheers!
I really like these beginner videos! Please can you do one on downclimbing?! I always find it hard getting down from the top if it's a more tricky climb...
Very helpful i recently went bouldering for the first time a week ago (was insanely sore afterwards) but was only able to get through a few V3s and 1 V4 because i couldnt hold them properly but i think i can get alot further after seeing this, thanks so much!
You're an awesome teacher and easy to listen to. Thank you!
its like watching a seashell collection! hehe :) nice vid!
Lol 😂 That's what I was thinking too! 👍🏾
Most useful climbing video I’ve ever seen! Cheers
I just tried rock climbing for the first time and I am going to be so impressive with all my new lingo next time, thanks so much for this video!!
Love the editing 👌🏾
Thanks Jake, for the great video! Please do record more of this type of watch for us beginners and helps a lot!
Great video guys! I haven't watched one which goes into this much detail before so thumbs up from me. I should really put it into practice now!
Great information and you explained it really simply. Thank you!
I am Glad that I came across these videos because I’m just getting into rock climbing and I found them very informative thank you
I went to a climbing gym in Florida, and there was a whole wall of these driftwood style holes, and it was great. I love having a lot of scraggly stuff to hold onto. Despise crimps, rarely use them as anything other than footholds. Best with speed climbing.
perfect. Now. 2-3 new succession videos on "how to use" each type would be wonderful please.
Can you make a similar video about footholds, especially for the this slippery ones, what is the best way to step on those, which part of the shoe is best to use where etc...
"Take my advice with a... PINCH of salt"... I see what you did there
slopers always get me. I'm getting better with crimps though! Thanks for the informative video :D
I did my very first bouldering yesterday. My arms and both palms are all sore. Pretty nice experience I had doing it. I will try next weekend as well.
Gonna try staying lower on slopers from now on! Small handed girl’s worst enemy. 😣 Thanks for the advice!
This was REAL good, thank you!
Awesome thanks so much guys I really needed this one! Wicked
In summation:
1. Jugs
2. Slopers
3. Pinches
4. Crimps
5. Pockets / Slots
Chris A and volumes
Some strong climbers would call this a jug
Me: lol
To me all of those are jugs
I'm not strong but I would at least call those "kinda juggy"
Niceee
Great video. I'm just starting myself and had no idea how to handle what I now know is called a sloper.
Thank you so much for this video! It helped me so much!
I'm trying to start seriously on rock climbing - thank you for this excellent video!
Great video. Concise. Thanks!
Lovely video! I learned new things and enjoyed the process! :)
Great job on this one guys, you really knocked it out of the park!
This was super helpful, thanks!
Great wee video man!
4:50 Is there a video where you're giving more information about locking a grip in climbing? I'm very eager to learn about it! thanks, great videos.
Super helpful for me as a new climber!
Great explanation. Thanks
I just found out I live a 4 minute walk away from a climbing centre (is that the word?) so when the lockdown is over I want to have a go but I've never climbed anything other than a couple of trees as a kid
When you said pinch crimp difference? Resonates with me a ton haha Thank you for clearing this up!
Awesome video! Learned a lot thanks!
10/10 advice guys! Thanks
Amazing video, if i had found this the day i started my progress would've been much better. Still have trouble with pinches and slopers, because of a lack of finger strength and bad technique. Hopefully this video helps!
Thanks for the video. Just an FYI, that mic fart you had is likely a cellphone. If you get an email and the wireless radio in your phone turns on near the microphone, the electrical noise from your phone creates a higher noise floor on the microphone resulting in louder static
I love rock climbing thank you for this it was informational
This is really helpful!
That "Beam me up, Scotty" is so funny xD
Thank you so much jake
This video is super helpful, thanks for uploading this info ! =D
super informative thank you for the video!
Thank a lot for that great explanation! I've just started my journey with climbing. Cheers from Norway
Where in norway do you climb?

Great video!
you make me want to climb more often
Thanks! Very helpful
Great video. Thank you
The editing is on point hahahah
Beam me up scotty :D
Quite a late comment but one useful thing I learnt recently (and way too late) is that 2 finger pockets you should do like jake and use middle 2 fingers not first 2 - the first 2 are on the same tendon whereas the second 2 split the load between tendons letting you climb safer
Super Helpful! Thx!
Climbing is my new addiction, it just makes you happy and bubbly
This is very helpful! 👌👍
I actually love you so much
This video is the most informative thing ever
good stuff very informative
Love the editing lol
Great video for a newbie like myself!
Very informative thanks
2:22 talk about PIIINCHESSS
So helpful!
What are golds with bumps called? Either individual mounds, or more bulbous groups, kinda like the wing there
Love this
Thanks that was helpful!
Thank you!
Thanks boys!
Id love to get into climbing. Ive bouldered on vacations, but where I live there are no natural rock formations worth climbing. Sadly there are also no indoor climbing gyms. One was about to open up but their crowdfunding failed so they're trying to get sponsored by local businesses before they put it up again. They bought the land and they have the money for the building it's just the infrastructure inside that they still can't afford.
Jugs: easiest holds with a really positive edge
Slopers: usually large holds with a rough surface and no positive edge. Create friction with the whole palm of the hand, stay low
Pinches: holds that have positive edges on opposing sides. Pinch using thumb on one side and fingers on the other side.
Crimps: small, thin and irregularly shaped. Use full crimp, with thumbs on top of the fingers, or half crimp, with thumb loose. The full crimp is generally more dangerous.
Pebbles: tiny crimps where you can't use all your fingers.
Pockets: have a whole in the middle
Slots: like pockets, but require more accuracy
This is kind of neat. I've been watching alot of rock climbing videos lately and have been thinking about getting into it, my only issue is my weight. I have some good strength and grip for my weight but not enough to support my body because I don't grip a lot of tings during my work day. I'm 275lbs :/ 5'10" tall. I can deadlift 335 without straps but that doesn't translate into grip strength at all. It'd be cool to get into this on a beginner level and see how I do. But I think I might be to fat. I don't even really eat that much :( like once or twice a day usually less than like 1500 calories
At my local gym the smallest holds , the pebbles, they referred to them as chips. At the end of the day don’t suppose it matters much.
Really helpful video for a beginner like me, just 6days in. Thank you ❤ are you sure they're mic farts? 😅
Very Informative...
If you pause the video at 5:00 it looks like he's eating a slice of watermelon
Thanks man
Nice video, very informative =]
8:53. An angel wing, for sure. Great vudeo, thanks. Newbie here. I hate slopers! They're scary. Imo.
Thanks!!
Good video. Thanks :D
"Honey, you're starting to hurt my jugs"
"Sorry! Was just using some new holds I learned"
