Looking forward to learning Uechi Ryu in the near future. Having said that, I can’t stand how all your kata training goes out the door during these types of tournaments. Half these karateka have their hands down, they’re in wide stances, they’re kicking above the waist. I understand it needs to be toned down to prevent injuries but it just irks me.
This is due to not drilling in the kata enough where it becomes automatic.I think Seizan Breyette (Toyama Seiko’s successor) said it best where Uechi Kanbun would make his student drill both attack and defense over and over again until they became automatic.

Whoever invented point sparring ruined karate and did not know anything about fighting.
Shoulders squared, standing to straight up, chin to high, no follow through on punches or combinations, scared to be hit. I can see this just from looking on video these guys do not spar regularly. They like like fighters with less than a year of experiance in a MMA gym.
