Wow, it was weird finding this video. I was stationed on Okinawa in 1988 and went to this tournament. I believe it was at Kokusai University.

This is the good thing in this kind of kumite wherein players can kick and punch on the face of their opponents. you can see the reality when one is hit in the face- either the receiver will disengaged quickly or stunned or even knockdown. no continuous attack because they become cautious from being hit- especially on the face.

Karate practitioners or karateka not players. No one should be ‘playing’ Karate

This is realistic sports combat kumite. bare knuckles and they can punch, kick and even throw their opponent. It simulates street fighting.

not quite bare knuckles - just those thin white partial gloves.

@@scarred10 although Okinawan karate does train grappling, just that Funakoshi who taught karate in Okinawa, taught mostly Kata, point sparring but no grappling or weapon defense, that's why olympic karate doesn't work and only works for tournaments which was created by Funakoshi

Most of the Japanese fighters are telegraphing their punches by stomping first... this form of intimidation doesn't always work

I think some are like that when they see a kumite which is really hard in their way of doing the combat sports resembling almost the reality of street fight; and their own kumite does not comes close to what they are viewing, the became sour and tell that the participants does not know how to fight tsk tsk tsk!

I think this is open to all styles. Imagine getting hit in the face with those bare knuckles. I noticed this fighters get stunned when they got hit in the face just like in a street fight which reminds me of my friends who settle their disputes with their fist. Hehe.

ok, so look up "Kote-kitae". When I trained a good 30 minutes would be spent pounding the hell out of each other in something called "Kote-kitae". Over a couple of hears you learn how to make your body physically HARD and you can take pretty serious blows. Can't harden the head or testicles so yeah, there's that.
That said. Tyson was a god. Amazing boxer. Mad respect.
I guess it would depend if Tyson knew the other guy knew Okinawan karate and if he was being a dick :)
