- Have you ever wondered why dentistry is so expensive? Of course you have! Here's my rant on the cost of dental work and what I believe the problem might be. If you are frustrated because you can't get good quality dental work done, due to cost, please comment below! I want to hear your experiences! If you are a professional within the dental community, I would love to hear your thoughts on this! It seems that while dentistry techniques have come a long way, we're still in the dark ages when it comes to accessing that care. Please give us your opinion on why access to care is still reserved for those within a higher income bracket and what you feel may be the solution to this.

@kalinjax Know this is really old but just recently came across your channel & have been watching your vids almost nonstop - both old & new. Lost my teeth due to a rare chronic illness & being put on meds for years that literally disintegrated my teeth, even to the root now. Unfortunately there was about 10yrs where my illness got so bad, my teeth were the last priority. Barely survived but slowly been getting better. Was in process of starting this before but then COVID hit, which now looking back was a complete blessing because I’m so much more informed now - thanks to your videos & feel much more confident about the process & what to ask for. Getting my extractions done soon. I just wanna give you a big thanks!! You’re realness is refreshing 💯

I had my Dentist that I used for 32 years lie, very dishonest but yet he made me pay up front for my bottom denture & didn’t do the job correctly so now I’ve gotta have a bone graft and the very back bone trimmed 😡 i asked him why he did that to me, he said Ann I thought it would work out and he’s a Prosthesis Dentist going through a divorce at that time last June 26,2018 Dr Michael Crawford! I looked at him and said you knew better but did me wrong anyway, I tried getting him to give me my 7,000 back but he wont budge cause he’s greedy! I’ve got a little bit of time before my year is over and I was suppose to sign off on my original paperwork but I’m not and I’m still not done with him. I can’t stand being lied too. I didn’t have 7,000 to throw away and now almost a year later, gotta have these 2 procedures done from his mistake I’m fuming at this moment cause it’s just unfair! nn@@annbiggs7270 I am sort of in the same boat. My dentist charged me 11,000 and I have to pay that loan off over 7 years. Not the dumb dentist. He told me he would give me the all on four implant and he started blaming me for the procedure not to work when he left me with 4 metal prongs sticking out of my gums and expected me to live this way until the bone heals. I have to eat and of course chewing will cause these to become loose. He did it all wrong. He was suppose to put in a temporary bridge screwed into the four metal prongs like most dentists do but he told me that he doesn't do that for some stupid reason he said. Not to mention the paid that I went through with him putting these metal prongs in and out. Now I'm down to 1 prong and he is putting an overdenture and charged me 400.00 more. This won't work either because when he made a mold impression for the lab, it darned near ripped out the metal prong and now I'm having issues with this one. I think I'm going down a rabbit hole with his second bright idea. I told the office that if this doesn't work there will be hell to pay. I took a picture of my mouth on the day he physically held me down when I went into shock and was crying hysterically from the pain. My mouth was red and my lips were swollen from him squeezing me mouth because I kept pulling away because of the pain. A lawyer won't touch him with a 10 ft pole and sue him and I don't understand why. He told me the only thing I can due is try to sue him for my money back or I have two years to have him arrested for the abuse. That experience terrified me and it took me a while to go back to him to try to fix his failure and charge me 400.00 more. One way or another I will get my money back. His life is in my hands because if I have him arrested, he will lose his practice and his family so he needs refund me my money.
Dental health or poor dental health, is also a direct cause of poor heart health!!! How in the world is this not considered medical health!!!

@@texastrustedoralsurgeon6830 actually, poor dental health can have a direct effect on heart health. Bacteria enters the blood stream and can cause endocarditis. Patients with Aortic Stenosis, Bicuspid Aortic Valve, Mitral Valve Prolapse, and other heart murmur issues are prescribed prophylactic antibiotics before any dental appt. Patients with periodontitis have significantly higher rates of heart disease than the general population.
I bet truth be known and told... its the number 1 cause of heart disease.
Team Six think about this. If periodontal disease and/or dental disease in general were the number one cause of heart disease. People who have no teeth, denture wearers, would likely never have heart attacks. Explain that, because the opposite is true.

As a former dental assistant cost & the fact that dental & medical is kept separate has always been my biggest issue with the whole industry! It is absolutely infuriating!
Also the average benefit amount has been the same since 1976! $1200 bucks!
Dentistry is such a business it very rarely seems to have anything to do with Healthcare... Sad...
I'm also a former dental assistant. I always took very good care of my teeth. My first pregnancy caused some issues (I had HE with every baby, and the gastric acid from excessive daily vomiting for 9 months is what did it) then my second and third pregnancies ruined them. I tried to stay ahead of the damage, but when I got divorced and I lost my insurance, I couldn't keep my head above water anymore, so to speak. Plus, I'm a bruxer, so that hastened everything. It was Kristi and her honest videos that got me through this journey.
Medicaid is even less $1000 dollars!
Keri Broughton Same with me. I was having a lot of health problems which is why I am a former assistant. Then I ended up losing my health coverage also. I had multiple teeth break down at once , obviously you and I both know the cost & I didn't want to go to anybody I worked for because I was so embarrassed that it's gotten to this point and didn't have the money anyway. So now I'm gonna end up in a full upper & a lower partial...
But I thank God for these videos it's certainly helps! I hope it also helps some patients to know that those of us who are or were in the dental field can also find ourselves in the same situation.

Moving Target Really? I didn't think Medicare had an annual Max. I do know when it comes to dental they're extremely cheap on what they pay out to the dentist hence why a lot of doctors don't even want to accept it and also it's very limited on what's cover.
@@TaraConti I felt the same way about going to anyone I had worked for in the past...I was too embarrassed, even though the doctors at my last office are who I would've trusted the most. And to complicate things, I was a subcontractor for about a year, filling in at offices who had assistants out sick or on leave, so I've worked at dozens and dozens of local offices. And I also had to leave the field due to health issues. I've been out on disability for over 15 years now. I miss the work so much.

I know this is a year old but I had to say this: 100% ON POINT! There were so many mic drops in this video I think you broke it! I started watching you back when you first got your implants. We are about the same age and I am finally going in to start the denture process next week. I'm honestly terrified of how much this is going to cost but we've got to bite the bullet. Good video Kristi. I work part time for a dentist and you're justified in your disgust. Dental insurance doesn't work because of the nature of teeth. Insurance companies just don't want to pay. You pay more in premiums than you get in care. A $1000-1500 insurance limit covers nothing and there's a waiting period of 1 to 2 years for major work. It's a joke. The reason for the waiting period is because the insurance companies want you to make at least 1 to 2 years of monthly payments before they'll even consider paying for anything. It's the insurance companies who control when you see the dentist-only 2 cleanings per year and a joke limit. Dental discount cards may be the way to go. The real solution is free care, medical and dental, for everyone.

Free? I get that the system needs work, but who's going to pay the dental assistants? They are underpaid as it is, trust me, I was one for about a decade. I don't begrudge my former employers, because I understood that they had to pay to keep the lights on, the rent or mortgage paid, for supplies & equipment, and front office staff & hygienist salaries, etc...I get that dental care is expensive, but so is running a dental practice. I did what I did for the paycheck, but also for the love of the work. I knew I'd make more than I would at McDonald's, but that I wasn't going to get rich doing it. Most dentists I knew (and I knew a lot) weren't rich either. Hell, one dentist I worked with for years was the president of the Va Dental Association, and while he wasn't broke, he wasn't rolling in it either.
Free care is not the answer. Mandating free care, whether from a dds or md, is theft. What needs an overhaul is the insurance policies. They are the ones getting rich. They pull in untold amounts of money for premiums from employers and individuals, and typically pay out, at most, 50% for major restorative work. And RARELY does that include implants or prosthodontics. And btw, that 50% they cover is AFTER an annual deductible (usually $500 per patient) had been met. The dentists aren't the enemy here.
Ron, how about you take that speech to all the other countries who offer free health care to all their citizens and find out if they’re running a charity there. Health care in those countries are free for the citizens because it’s paid for with taxes. And health care in those countries are not astronomical like here in the US simply because there are no insurance companies who are directly responsible for jacking up the costs.
It goes like this. US hospitals have a master charge list where the markup is around 200 percent of what the whole sale was originally. This because insurance companies haggle the hospitals down to pay as little as possible forcing those hospitals to excessively overcharge to compensate. It then becomes necessary to have insurance just to get care, where then people who are uninsured end up defaulting on their ridiculously high medical bills because they’re unable to afford out of pocket, causing the hospitals and clinics to pass the buck onto those who either can afford to pay out of pocket or have insurance where the cycle begins all over again. Insurance is nothing more than an expensive middle man more interested in profits than the care of the people they insure.
Socialist countries remove the middle man bullshit, and pay only a reasonable mark up to wholesale medication and procedures and care, because they figured out a long time ago that healthy citizens are productive citizens, who can work and pay taxes and keep the economy healthy, thereby keeping medical care reasonable.
But militant capitalists like yourself are so short sighted thinking only of profits that you lose sight of the bigger picture. Why do you think Americans are so unhealthy compared to most other countries? Why do you think we have possibly the largest debt of any first world country? We’re surrounded by low quality, high calorie food, we pay too much for health care and medicine, leading to those who can’t afford care being unable to work, living off subsidies in order to function, decreasing tax revenue, and adding to the drain on society.
As much as you think socialism is evil and capitalism is the answer, bottom line... it does not work! Not in its current state! Greed doesn’t benefit anyone. Not even the greedy. What good is all the money in the world if you’re too sick to even enjoy it?

They've modified raw capitalism to emphasize labor over production.Current US model emphasizes shareholder profits through increased production--and the laborers (workers) get a small share that includes things like health/dental care, so they can keep working. It simply makes SENSE to take care of workers' health!
it is the insurance companies that should be separated from this equation losing teeth is not a car accident, or my building went on fire, it has a lot to do with what is placed into our food and water, plus giving birth.

@@ethanshelbyskateboarding9980 I agree. Corporate owned offices are becoming more popular, hopefully they can get better rates and not just be focused on production. There is a lot of overhead in dentistry and most insurance only covers maintenance, screws you if you have disease.

I need a sinus lift because I'm missing my top molars. No one ever mentioned that pulling those teeth would cause my sinuses to fill in that space. Had I been aware of that, I would have fought to keep them. There is no way I can do a sinus lift now. And why is that a dental procedure? I have to have extensive surgery to replace those teeth or get a partial with 2 teeth. But I wish I was informed my sinuses would expand and fill in where the bone loss was. Seems like important information.

I had a sinus lift done for the same reason my #13 and #14 and I never heard of the procedure and when the teeth were removed I wasn’t told my bone would shrink
I am scheduled for the sinus lift next month Aug 2021. Just wondering how it went for you? I just had 5 implants on the lower arch 4 weeks ago. The temp is challenging. Bulky and juts out too much for my liking...

Having a patient with a situation similar to yours is what makes us lose sleep at night. It's not easy to give a patient treatment options they can't afford...especially when the most ideal treatment involves removing teeth.
I got into dentistry because I want help people in my community that need it most. Unfortunately, even with a good heart and ambition to serve, a dentist can only afford to do that once a week, maybe even twice a week if they are really established.
Dentistry is extremely overlooked by every medical professional except for dentists, which is so frustrating because of how much oral health impacts someones overall health. Insurance coverage is pathetic for dental work and needs to be fixed. The American dental association fights for legislation nonstop in hopes to expand dental coverage, including removing the term "cosmetic dentistry" for procedures that are far from cosmetic.
The reason dental work costs so much is due to many reasons. The first reason is because of the schooling. I graduated dental school with over 350k in student loans. 5 Years of dental school after 4 years of college with that debt makes starting a family difficult, even with the outrageous cost for care. Rent, paying staff, updating equipment,...etc also has an effect on costs as we do not get funding from the government.
I truly wish things were different and I hope they will change soon. I appreciate everything you said in this video and I wish you nothing but the best.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful response. I would not want to be in the position so many of you are in. I used to be adamant that dentists were heartless con-artists. I was hurting and humiliated and wanted something that I just couldn't get. Since I've been doing RUclips and have had the opportunity to get a little more insight from professionals, I understand things a little better. I know the amount of work and sacrifice many of you have to make to run a successful practice and i'm grateful for you. There are bad apples in any field and dentistry is no different. But I understand the majority of you are very compassionate, otherwise you wouldn't be in the health industry. Truly, thank you for what you do. I hope change happens for all of us.
My husband and I still question why dental issues aren't covered under medical insurance. It is absolutely 100% crap! I'm in the same position you were in years ago. I've got 5 children (my teeth went to shit during my pregnancies), but I also didn't take care of them because I was in an abusive/controlling marriage. I'm trying to find the $$ to cover the expense of dental implants because I know I won't be able to look at myself in the mirror without crying if I was to get dentures. I've been suffering and wasting money on my teeth for more than 7 years to the tune of $15,000 on just 7 teeth.
My goal is dental implants and I'm slowly working towards that goal this year despite the pain and suffering.

Supplementation of calcium is crucial but I was young and foolish with my first child, then end up in an abusive marriage where I was given little to no money to care for myself.
It's all about the money. Dentistry has become a free market run amuck. Where I live, just a simple extraction ranges from $49-250. It's highly competitive.
Today, I called one office that wanted $1047 for a top denture with one alignment. The office I'll be going to charges $450 and will provide multiple adjustments to be sure it fits.
The motives, as usual, are power and money.
I just had all my teeth pulled. Even about 8 that didn't even have issues because i had to use Medicaid and it was all or nothing. I cant wear my dentures because the ones they gave me dont fit and mt bottom gums have bone spurs all through them. Im only 33. Pregnancy IS why my teeth fell apart.

You are 100% right about how messed up it is that dental isnt considered healthcare. If someone has a bad tooth. Whatever organs correlate with that or those teeth will have something wrong too.
I really loved your video. I am glad someone is finally speaking about costs. I've been saying for years to other people your mouth is not separate from your body. Alot of illnesses and sicknesses in general come from poor mouth hygiene even when you take care of your teeth certain medications and illnesses alike can cause tooth loss. I so wish the medical community would come together with dentists and fix a very broken system. I 100% agree if anything dentures should be deemed cosmetic. Luckily I do have a ridge on the bottom and dont have issues keeping them down all the time my issue is the topo have no suction with my denture. Again, because of a severe overbite they can only doso much for me as far as making a functioning denture. If I had $10, 000.00 to get a hybrid or snap ons I'd do it in less than a heartbeat! I had my son and started having tooth issues I went from being 34 years old and never having a cavity to loosing all my teeth by the time I was 42. I was told they were all rotting from the root up so no matter what I did it was gonna cost an obscene amount of money to fix the problem and even better no guarantees that it would be a 100%successful in fixing. Its heartbreaking and those of us that have lost all of our teeth are unfairly judged. Society judges people's faces and smiles It makes it hard to smile and get ahead in life when that happens. Besides giving birth tooth pain is the 2nd worse pain I've ever experienced and I feel for anyone who has to suffer through it! Anyone and everyone I know I try to direct them to places that give decent care and have sliding fee scales or places that will take state Medicaid. Everyone should be able to be proud to smile and live their best life no one should have to suffer with pain, bad dentures or bad dental and unaffordable dental work. I've rambled too long. Great video, and it is time for healthcare to reform and include dental as medical, correct it's not a one size fits all as far as deductibles, cleanings and fillings are concerned. 💜
A B I never had issues with my teeth at all the first 21 years of my life, then 2 months after becoming pregnant with my first daughter my teeth started to slowly decay. Then during my second pregnancy a year and a half later they continued to get worse and worse and worse. Every dentist I have seen has said that being pregnant and breastfeeding does not have any effect on your teeth. I am 1000% proof that YES IT DOES! My dental cleaning habits did not change or suddenly stop just because I became pregnant. My eating habits didn’t either, if anything they became better because I was trying to give my body the best nutrients for the baby! After I was no longer breastfeeding my 2nd daughter the decay slowed down tremendously, but by then the damage was already done.
@@kellyturnerphotography I completely agree after my son my teeth just went downhill! People who know me cant believe that I had to get dentures as I was pretty anal to put it bluntly about oral hygiene. I kept floss, picks spare toothbrush and paste mouthwash etc in my car, one in over night bags in my regular daily purse. Dental hygiene is so important and a big key to ones overall success health wise. Losing my teeth was literally one of my worst nightmares come true, but I've learned alot as well and helped friends and people I know that didn't take care of themselves or their teeth and make the road a little easier for them and take what I know and pass it on.

What buggles me is that when something better comes on the market why aren't all dentists jumping on the bandwagon? There are now implants which are bio adaptable to your body, ceraroot and some are zirconia which do not act like metals in your body, titanium implants contain nickle and some people are allergic, but dentists do not inform them of this when they recommend implants. Any metal turns my skin black, even titanium or rhodium metals turn my skin green or black, when I tried to talk to my dentist about zirconia implants he started getting defensive and made me feel like, if I don't stop talking about how titanium is bad for the body, he is going to get rid of me as a patient. Why are they so resistant to providing us with SAFER products? It is OUR hard earned money and we want safe materials in our bodies, not things which will cause problems, migraines and bad reactions. I love your videos, I have watched you from the very start. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Yeah, dentists are just as greedy as medical doctors and plastic surgeons, and want to do the cheapest job and charge as much as possible for their work. Money rules the world, donating to charities does not mean a person is good, it just means they will get relief for their taxes that year. I had a dentist who agreed to fix my teeth for me, but the minute he saw how much work I need, he found the meakest excuse to get rid of me. He donated to charities too. Money Money Money.
I went back home 15 years ago and within one month for $ 1000 CAN I had everything fixed, back home in Bulgaria, also I see Rumania, Mexico, Cuba few other countries offer great dental care with the latest products plus you get to recover in a beautiful place. Wish I can travel right now but that's over too because now we are dying from coronavirus, what is next G5 is already here, that probably will start melting our brains out.
@@vaniad555 Yes indeed Romanian dentistry is much more affordable and very good quality , i am from Romania but i live in the Uk and every time i travel home i allways go to the dentist to have work done. Unfortunately Covid made it impossible for me to travel for the last 2 years and i desperately need dental work but i can't travel because of restrictions and dental care in the Uk is absolutely the most expensive in Europe if not the entire world , i can not afford it ..so i wait and wait and wait and my situation is getting worse each day. Aniway.. i totally recommend Romania , Bulgaria , Hungary , Turkey for good quality affordable dental work.
Well Kalin, I listened to your blog, I'm from Ireland and dental procedures are mega expensive here. I'm a trained lawyer and I need the same procedure as you have done simply because I couldn't afford the dental work. It boils down to money. The dental professionals don't seem to get that if a person needs to get this procedure done, it is a life altering thing for the patient. And my advice is to go to a female dentist as they have more empathy,. My job demands I have to look well and healthy, and your teeth help with that. It's important! And I hear ya! I worked as a health insurance lawyer and I quit as the carrier were scam artists and one of the largest in Europe. So I hear your argument. And keep it up. Regards, John from Ireland. I am SOOO glad I ran across this video! You can not believe ALL the searching, looking, digging, desperate to find some help that I have done. I know you aren't the dentist's office, However, you are THE ONLY ONE that has even an inkling of what I am feeling. A brief history on my needs-
I always took extremely good care of my teeth and oral hygiene because I was fortunate enough to have really great insurance at my former jobs. I had 2 cleanings yearly and my son and I wore braces at the same time. A few years later I had to have oral surgery to still correct my bite because it had and was effecting my chewing and digestion. So they broke both jaw bones and adjusted my bite and wired my mouth shut for 6 wks. Well, that seemed to work for a period of maybe a couple years. In the meantime however, through the years, I had more and more
difficulty in swallowing my foods and even liquids. So, I dehydrated at work one night. I finished my shift and drove myself to the local hospital ER. They ran numerous tests, and kept me for a week. During this time, they decided the procedure of dilating my esophagus was necessary because the opening of it going to my stomach was almost closed together and it wasn't contracting and expanding the way it was suppose to. So, was put under, had the procedure, just outpatient, so really didn't think it was that major.
Nursed BK well enough to return to work, but in a few short months noticed the same old choking feeling and food coming back up. So, this began years, yes, years of suffering through dilations, esophagus stretched, balloon blown up to stretch it to try to keep it open, and these would work for a short time and gradually go back to the same old, same old, and gradually worse. You ask, How could it get worse. Well, by that time, it was no longer just my food, but also liquids, including water. I had followed every doctors' orders to the tee, but no relief. It got to the point of almost aphixeateing while sleeping many times. They had done all the stretching, etc. they could do through the years with no cure. So I just learned to live with it. That has been approx. between 25-35 years now or more. I am 57 years old now and am on disability as of 2000. I have to pay a phenomenal amount just for my Medicare plus insurance.
A couple years ago my son had taken me to the ER at a hospital about 50 miles away. They did nothing except give me some phenagen and send me home. Finally, one last attempt we made an appt with the same gastro team I had always seen at that same facility. This time, though, I can't remember what was different, maybe a different doctor, but he set me up an appt there at the hosp. to take a swallowing test. Yes, it actually measures the strength and pressure of your swallowing ability when you drink a small cup of water. It takes all these measurements and prints out a graph. The technicians explained the procedure and how it worked and seemed pretty simple. Well, they kept repeating the procedure a few times. And the graph would show up to 10 being max amount of swallowing ability. Three times into it, mine registered 0 every time. That's ZERO ! Like no swallowing pressure or strength at all!! So, yes, finally after years of being miserable and living with it, at least finally someone could actually, physically pin point a major problem-- now what to do about it??? They scheduled me an appt with a specialist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and not only did he know EXACTLY what was wrong, but even had a medical term for it

This ugly, crippling, monster who had worked it's herrendous, poisonous venom on me for all those years AND OH, I'LL ET'S NOT FORGET what it has done to my lovely, bright, giddy smile that I took care of religiously until I could no longer save it!
So NOW.... after a book on my journey, I PRAY that someone can PLEASE help me get the help I so desperately need for my dental health. And it's NOT COSMETIC that is my concern, NO, I AM SO CLOSE to being/having SEPTIS. This is how very bad my mouth is currently. I hurt constantly and of course, the throwing up after every bite and drink has just worn me down. I guess I am about to the point of giving up! I know I must have a major, serious surgery to correct the Alcalasia, but haven't scheduled that because my oral health is just as bad, if not worse. I'm not sure they can even perform the surgery without first getting these few disgusting, rotten, broken off at the gums teeth out of my mouth and given some serious antibiotics!! You see, ALL that stomach acid that has come BK up throughout the years, has literally eaten away my teeth! I know that sounds crazy, but to prove that even,there is a spot of grass right over our back deck where I use to run and relieve myself. Well, the stomach acid is so strong that it burned the grass where I was throwing up! I kid you not! To this day, the grass still doesn't grow back, even after I stopped a long time ago. Now, I keep 2 large plastic butter bowls with lids beside my chair at all times. And I go and wash them with bleach and soap in hot, hot water.
Sooo wow is the life of me! And I'm so afraid I'm not looking at a very bright future, if at all, unless I can get the HELP I NEED, PLEASE!! I just can't in any way afford to pay what these dentists and perhaps oral surgeon wants to charge. So, I get to choose, either keep sitting here until the infection kills me or humbly beg for someone, anyone, to please, just, at least try to see if there's any type of assistance I may get to help me through this!!
I know this was extremely long, but I felt I had to tell my story so that hopefully people can understand how serious and life threatening this is.
And YOU ARE SO RIGHT! WE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO CHOOSE! MY MOUTH, TETH, TONGUE, ETC. ARE ALL CONNECTED TO THE REST OF MY BODY!! SO WHY, OH WHY, IS THIS NOT TREATED AS A MEDICAL NECESSITY ASAP????
Please call your County Health Department. They can pull your teeth. It is based on income what you pay. That is what my husband has too. I am so very very sorry you are suffering so much. You don’t deserve that. Sending hugs and hope.
Wow! That was extremely well put. I’ve wondered that myself that dentistry required a separate insurance policy. Yes it is a different part of your body with a different function, but that’s true with every part of your body. There’s heart doctors, bone doctors, skin doctors, etc. It should be covered on a HEALTH insurance policy. It’s like having car insurance that covers parts of the car in a collision but you need a separate policy for the hood. Crazy.

You are exactly right. I have been screaming this for years! I had crappy teeth for as long as I can remember. After my kids... they began falling out. Being self employed and having no proper care for my teeth... at 43 I had to take drastic measures. Due to bone loss and other issues I needed implants to have teeth. I could not afford the prices here in the US and I made the decision to go to Mexico for implants. I am FURIOUS that people can not afford dental care. I’m like you ... why is this not considered HEALTH CARE? If I knew how to help this I would do it today.

Hello, you told the complete truth. I am curious also why a dentist charges the same price as what the insurance pays the dentist. That is my question. But, I really have more that will just take to long. Your own teeth can effect your heart. I know people that had to have every tooth removed because of their hearts. Infections.

One thing you did not mention is how much better those of us with dental challenges feel when they are resolved to bring us each a stronger sense of self-confidence, self-appreciation and less stress when it comes to our social interactions and, as well, as our most basic and important activities of eating and nutrition! How much more productive and happy is someone that does not have to be constantly losing their energies about what so often have become insurmountable health problems. You have pointed out that many, many aspects of our lives are wrapped up in our dental health. Isn't it time to demand that the regulators, whether it be the government or the insurance industry start serving the purpose they try to convince us that they are doing. namely, looking out for us to give us better lives? The frustration is just so great....your teeth are a part of your body, it shouldn’t be separate from medical, it should be all in one! Wow! The thought, research and hard work you put into this video is outstanding! There are many complicated issues, as you pointed out so clearly, surrounding people who need dental care and those who charge for it. On the one hand you have people who do not attempt to take care of their teeth and refuse dental hygiene in any form. On the other hand, there are dentists who are little more than rip off artists who don't care about anything but their bank accounts. Most people fall somewhere in-between those worst case scenarios.
Your advocacy for dentistry to be seen in the same light as any other health issue is long overdue. And while I wish you had not experienced even one dental problem in your life. That isn’t what happened.
You could have folded your tent and accepted your dental problems as fate, a condition where you have no free will, no control and life happens to you. Instead you chose a different path, one where you kicked fate in the ass and created an environment that made it possible to help yourself and others! That is not fate, an unavoidable intractable condition- but destiny, something you create. Stay with it- you are doing a lot of good!

Psoriatic Arthritis Stole my teeth and cartilage in my jaw. It's to the point that wearing regular full dentures causes blisters all over my mouth. I'm trying now to petition my health insurance to help cover the costs. There's also tons of research showing that PsA causes gum disease and tooth loss. It's absolutely medical! I agree 100%. Vision insurance should also be covered under the medical umbrella. I started losing my teeth at 24, and have now been in a full denture for 3 years, after having what was left of my natural ones pulled. Thank you for sharing your story. Finding your videos 3.5 years ago, are what helped me to finally get it (extractions) done.

I'm in the same boat. My teeth have been destroyed through some bad dentistry, certain medications, and medical issues. I need to have them pulled, but I cannot afford it even with my insurance. The best part is, I work in the health/dental/vision insurance industry and it is my specialty. The reason for the different insurances is because the AMA deems optometrists and dentists are not considered medical professionals. Also they can charge more for each service. You're 14 and all your teeth are spotted and yellow because you have severe dental fluorosis because your childhood dentist had your mother basically spoonfeed you fluoride. So the dentist you have to see once a month because you grind your teeth in your sleep decides to shave the enamel down on your teeth and paint some fake enamel on simply because you've grown up on medicade and she wats to help whiten your teeth and this is the only way medicade will pay for it. At 19 you lose dental insurance and because you work a fast food job can't afford to keep going back. Also a kid comes into the picture and you have to make sure that they're taken care of. Over time little cracks form in the painted on crap that didn't didn't know about and when you're 26 and can now afford finally go back to the dentist for a sorely needed cleaning the painted on enamel chips away showing the rot that was unknown underneath that you didn't even know was there. Maybe instead of snapping to a judgement, you should ask why people say things like that, because sometimes the odd person might just be telling the truth and you've just made yourself look like an asshat.

Thank you for ranting about this. I started 10yrs ago to get my teeth pulled. Made a plan 20,000.00 and with insurance. The dentist then decided he would not pull my teeth wanted all this fancy stuff down. I have multiple health issues and that along with meds have destroyed my teeth. Iam on disability now with 8 teeth left jawbone destroyed and like you said trying to get them to understand (insurance) that after many disasters it has to be done in hospital etc. Everything you are saying is spot on.

I agreed with about 98% of what it saying except for the fact that about 7 of the 10 Dentists I've been to in the last 12 years when my issues developed have been in it for nothing but money. One of the 3 caring places was a dental school so really 2 of 9 we're good caring dentists. I find the dental hygienists all mostly seem to be the caring ones. I can't wait to be done with this process. Btw, the Dental should be part of medical, wow is that spot on.
AMEN!! I'm getting ready to have my teeth extracted. Several years ago I was told it would be 15k to save all my teeth, THATS INSANE! So I figured my money would be better invested in dentures or implants. I'm so embarrassed about this but I brush and flush 2-3 times a day yet at 36 I'm going to be toothless. That's not fair to me, to you, to anyone in our situation.

Girl! Great video. I have 30k worth of dental crowns. Had multiple surgeries.. I too was young when I needed it. In Canada, our employer benefits cover a teeny tiny amount as you mentioned there's a small cap on it. I too believe it should be treated like medical. Things do need to change! I had no control over why my teeth were the way they were, it would have been nice to have more of the cost covered.
Wil in Jax here and I totally agree. Went to Argyle Dental just to get a quote and had 10 AM appt. Left there at 1 PM and they wanted 34000.00 for implants. I do have insurance but won't cover this. They also billed me for this so called quote they said would be free! Thank you for your videos!
You said exactly what I’ve been thinking for so many years! I’ve lost so many teeth due to not being able to afford insurance and/or care to save them. In my case I took care of my teeth very well, don’t smoke, drink or do drugs. I had braces as a kid that wrecked my teeth. Then after each kid my teeth just suddenly went from bad to falling out.
Also! As an RDH, it's heartbreaking when someone needs work and insurance isn't available and cost is dictating the treatment they need and deserve. Access to care is a HUGE issue. I recommend to anyone if there is a dental hygiene school, call and make an appointment students need patients and you will get the care you need for low cost! Also they may be able to help you find a low income/low cost/ or free dental clinic to be able to receive dental care ❤️.
I’m sure dentist would love 💕 patients to be covered by health insurance. Imagine paying a $500.00 deductible and getting a smile 😃 to feel positive about. People would go in droves

Why is dentistry so expensive - in the US?!
I have paid $10,000 for
- extraction of all teeth
- temporary bridges upper and lower jaw
- 6 implants, titanium (upper jaw)
- 4 implants, titanium (lower jaw)
- permanent hybrid dentures
in Portugal/Europe. The dentist has done his formal training at the American Academy of Implant Dentistry in Chicago, IL, the material for the implants, bridges, and final devices came from Germany/Europe.
If I was in the mood for traveling, I could have saved another 1500 to 2000 bucks by having the same procedure done in low-cost countries like Bulgaria or Hungary.
So, ask your local US-dentist why s/he charges up to 4 times as much as his/her European colleague, although the dentists have the same formation and use the same materials.
I just had 22 teeth removed from my mouth on the 8th of this month. I went to a dental school. I didnt have 32k to go to Golpa ( who would be my first choice). I don't know if I ever will. But you are right on the money. I believe there are direct correlations between oral health and rest of the body health. Teeth are necessary for so many things both physically and emotionally. Not to mention how we are perceived by employers etc. Quality of life is greatly affected when a person has dental problems. They say we have an opioid epidemic.. well.. imagine having am abscess without pain meds. I could've shot myself in the face on my worst days, I felt so bad. We need change and reform. Outstanding video!!! As the previous comment to mine stated, your sentiments absolutely should be put before legislators at both the state and federal levels, and they need to hear first hand from someone who can bring that message with the same passion and eloquence that you displayed in this video. Hopefully, we can find a way to collectively get this message out, particularly as we enter an election season when health care will be a front and center issue for many of us all around the country.

I just got dentures a week ago and it cost me around $3,000 to get all my teeth pulled and dentures.. And at that price the dentist claimed he was giving me a deal 😒
If you had all your teeth/root tips removed and alveolarplasty and placement of bone grafts for future placement of implants. That was a great deal. And fyi after shrinkage usually about a year you will either need a reline or a new set cause those may be temporary. If you can swing it implants are the way to go.
I think the place i went to which was affordable dentures said they're implants were 10k but im not 100 percent positive on that but i feel pretty confident thats what i saw cuz thats what i want to build up to one day.

Agree Insurance should be covering all this. If you can't eat then your health will degrade, also direct link to heart disease. So why in hell don't they (the Insurance Companies) see that they would be saving money by not having to pay for a heart op. WTHech ...

Unfortunately it is political, lobbyists for big insurance. We unfortunately have to approach this from that perspective. A non medical group making medical decisions without medical knowledge. That is a blessing my brother and I raised on the same diet same everything. I got the messed up teeth. I already paid 8k to restore myself as best I can I need two. Two implants that go beyond my budget. My brother has perfect teeth. I on the other hand do not. Crooked never got braces fillings in all my molars. Yes I brushed. I did everything went to the dentist every 6 months. I was also on epileptic medication. Life sometimes deals us the worst hand ever.

I love your videos, thank you so much for speaking out. I’m 25 and currently trying to fix my teeth due to extreme pain and infections in most of them and am having absolutely no luck. I traveled to clear choice implants years ago and was told I’d need 40,000 worth of work. I can’t afford implants or even dentures and when I went to the last regular local dentist due to severe pain they told me they’d need to refer me to have my current infected tooth pulled because it’s a molar and has curved roots. They referred me and I was quoted at $400. I’m a stay at home mother of two and do not have any money and my partner is barely scraping by on rent. Medicaid is not covered at any dental business here. I have no idea what to do and I just feel stuck like I always have. It’s outrageous to me that it’s not “health care”. It’s affecting my life in every aspect and has been for the last 15 years or more. I just want to be out of pain and smile again for my children and hell, for myself. I haven’t smiled without hiding it in so long, it seems like some far away dream. I applaud you for all you’ve done and spoken out about. It’s so appreciated. ❤️
Hi Kalinjax!! I too have also paid out around 36,000 dollars to my dentist and orthodontist for implants. This is an outrageous cost for anyone especially those who cannot afford to do this! I really struggled with what’s the right choice for me or should I say buying my dentist a new car! Yes I have dental insurance but they only pay 2,000 yearly for certain procedures. I am a nurse and I see many patients at the clinic that need dental work done, but they don’t have the “right” insurance or they cannot afford any! Medicaid is a swear word to dentristy they won’t touch a patient with state programs! This must end it is a joke!!

Great video! It's all about money, but it's not the doctors, it's the insurance companies and the lawmakers that are the problem, and they are never going to change. For that reason I get my dental care in mexico!
You couldn't have expressed your self any better, many feel this way, it is a shame in this day and age not much has changed when it comes to dental care in the US. And you are right, nothing cosmetic about having rods in our mouth, just like there's nothing cosmetic when someone needs a hip replacement.
This is exactly where I am. It's infuriating and I'm ready to give up. My teeth also started breaking during pregnancy 17 years ago. Procedures and preventative measures are now breaking down. My dentist recommended the implants to save my bone in my jaw. Having been to several oral surgeons for consultations, many follow ups with my dentist, and countless phone calls to my insurance company, I'm beyond irritated. I even changed my insurance at the beginning of the year to get some parts covered (as they recommended), but because of the way they code the procedures, I still can't get any of it covered! And now I have to pay a higher premium to cover less. I have a great job, with lots of customer interaction. It's just so embarrassing to visit clients with missing and broken teeth. At this time, I can't afford $45k just to be able to eat and smile.
It is ridiculous and I am so sorry. I also need extensive dental work. So because I can’t afford that it is cheaper just to pull them and get dentures.

Care is NOT COVERED even when you do have dental insurance. BS is right!!!!! Dentists must do some heavy lobbying to keep them separate from medical insurance. I doubt their cost of doing education and running a business and paying for liability insurance and staff etc cost them more than it costs medical practioners. My pregnancy was harsh on my teeth too. I don’t think dentists compete for prices, they all set their prices high. Maybe it costs less in smaller non major cities.

I’m 3 days away from going 50k in the hole myself, so I can’t agree more. The worst part is I have excellent insurance through a union and it doesn’t cover a penny.
So sorry. I hope you get something that enhances your quality of life so much that the cost seems inconsequential. That’s a whole lot of money to spend.
I just spent 7 years of saving on my mouth. I have 5 implants on top and 5 on bottom. Im on day 3 of healing and I STILL can't afford what I ultimately wanted. However, I'm extremely grateful that I could get what I did because ANYTHING was better than what I had and I was bound and determined that I was getting implants come hell or high water...

Like I would like to know when chewing food properly is not a medical necessity! It can cause a whole lot of stomach issues as well.
A separate dental plan that pays very little if any on most procedures is BS! It should be included in the health insurance as well because If the mouth/teeth aren’t taken care of properly it can cause a whole lot of issues with the body in so many ways! 🙁

It’s terrible. I can understand the high tech equipment but the insurance does not cover anything. People are going out of the country risking their health. It’s terrible.
Diana D that’s an insurance problem. The annual cap has been the same for the last 25 years (1000-1500 dollars).
The equipment pays for itself. Those costs are recovered. On to of that, they are depreciated on the taxes. The argument of equipment is also BS.

Exactly ! I had meningitis as a child and the medicine to keep me alive, ruined my teeth. It literally ate the enamel off my teeth. I had bad teeth my whole life. That's why I have dentures at 49. And you're right, why is dental insurance separate from medical insurance?
Agree totally ... I also think it’s dumb to have vision be a separate insurance ... my health insurance also doesn’t cover my hearing ... how is my ability to see and hear well not part of my health? It’s a screwed up system and at the root of the problem I’m sure is money
During pregnancy your teeth can to go shit because of increased hormones, the bacteria in your mouth feeds off of those hormones and also, when you vomit the acid weakens and compromises the enamel. If you brush immediately after vomiting, you're essentially brushing acid all over your mouth. Rinse rinse rinse with water, use a mouth rinse, and brush 30 minutes later. Hope this is helpful!

You said exactly as I think, exactly and completely. And I’m one of those with horrible teeth due to a few medical conditions and paranoid about what my outcome will be because it’s so freaking expensive.
