I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

Matt, you have one of the best educational RUclips fishing channels available. From tournament breakdowns, to teaching your son (and viewers) how to wade fish in current, to broad topics like spinning vs. baitcasting, you cover all of it. Thank you! Edit: And you're not just a shill for your sponsors. Love it!

Great video! Would have loved to hear your take on the left-handed vs right-handed baitcaster decision. I'm right handed and use a left handed baitcaster.

Excellent video, Matt. I am a bank angler 90% of the time and always take 3 rods with me, 2 casting combos and 1 spinning combo. I also have 2 spare combos (1 spinning, 1 casting)in my car in case i need them. A while back back you made a video on what to buy first, the more expensive rod or reel. I disagreed with your opinion that the reel is more expensive but i apologise today, Matt...the reel IS more important as you rightfully said. Thanks for one of the very best channels we can watch.

Your info is spot on. I also think that you are 'connected' to your lure quicker with a bait caster than with a spinning reel. The moment the lure touches the water you have less "free line" using a bait caster than with a spinning reel. Its also takes split second longer for the bailing arm to swing over and to retrieve the slack line. Considering the speed at which a bass can nail your lure after it landed might mean the difference between a hook-up and a missed strike. I am not a bait caster expert at all and still have some bad overwinds. Slowly learning. Great video.

Great breakdown of information Matt! I'm 70 years old now and began using spinning tackle when I was 14. Spinning reels have been a major part of my fishing for all these years. It is interesting to see all the interest in spinning rods/reels now. What used to be "fairy wands" are now front and center. A lot of bass fishermen never learned to use spinning gear effectively due to being unable to cast accurately and control the line properly. These two skills only come with continual use- it's very difficult to describe how it's done.

I had not used a Spinning rig since the late 1980s early 1990s. Last year I picked up a couple Dawias a 2500 & 3000 sizes. With the thought of lite line and lures. Your right about the ability to make long casts , but control becomes a issues. Such as over shooting , you still to slow down your line at times. Then I’ve noticed wind knots frequently. It’s does need some skill to use and would probably to easier to learn with then a bait caster ? The drag took alittle getting use to. The one best plus with spinning reels , there is such a great Selection of Quality reels that won’t break the bank. Thanks for taking time out of your day to make this video.

Good guidelines. I love and use both. I’ve always had nicer casting set ups and cheaper spinning rigs. Just picked up my first really nice spinning rod and reel. Now I can’t put it down! 🤣
I agree 100% on casting and heavier line and tackle for heavy cover, but a 6’8”-6’10” spinning rod is a LOT easier to fish around the small ponds I bank fish. If I can get to the high percentage spots with casting I will throw casting. If I need spinning to get in there, spinning it is.
Not sure which channel it is was on, but the topic was throwing into heavy cover. The content creator was talking about losing fish and snagging and such, and said something along the lines of, “I am throwing into the cover to get the bite. I will worry about getting them out of the cover once they are hooked”.
On another channel, which I remember the name of but won’t call out, the dude was bank fishing and there was a huge lay down in the middle of the mouth of a cove. He said he didn’t want to cast too close to the tree because he might get snagged. He was casting the bait at least 25’-30’ away from the lay down. 🤦‍♂️
I’m more along the lines of the first dude. I prefer casting and heavier tackle for cover, but if I can get the bait to and into the cover better with a spinning rig, I am 100% going to throw with a spinning rig. I will worry about banking the fish once I have it hooked up.
Also, if there is wood in the water, I am TRYING to hang a hook in it! I’m not avoiding cover for fear of snagging. I’ve caught too many fish in heavy cover to avoid it. Getting snagged now and then is just the cost of doing business! 🤣

I always said the versatility of a baitcaster combo is better then spinning so that's what I always recommended to people I worked with that's getting into fishing or buying something for their kid... I used baitcasters for years throwing around lite stuff like wackyworms and weightless flukes because I hated spinning gear but it really came down to me and user error with spinning gear. Now spinning gear is just as important to me as my baitcasters and it's hard for me to not recommend one of both even though I still think a baitcaster is more versatile. Great video as always keepem coming brother!!!

  • @wolverinex4243

It's simple. Baitcasters are better. For ease of use and beginners, go with spinning. For use with 4-in or smaller jerkbaits or lures, I'd go with spinning. For trout, for sure go with spinning. For carp, baitcasters are absolutely fun. I'm gonna start these kids on baitcasters. Lol. It's gonna be fun.
Here's what I think; baitcasters work lures better. They allow you to use bigger lines and still cast far. That's not possible with spinning. Spinning tends to go with smaller lines below 14 lbs. Baitcasters fight fish way better, which translate to less fish lost. Control of fish is the key for me switching to baitcasters. Baitcasters have different kind of torgue. If you go after big fish, then get a baitcaster.

Spinning reel everytime for me just because of a tip from Steve Roger's. Hold your finger out in front of the line and let the line catch your finger on the retrieve. It's been a real tip for those hard to get a bite days with certain baits. Thanks Matt.

i was wondering can i use my abu gracia sx spinning on the salt? I used my baitcaster for Scup and accidently landed a 25in stripe bass on 15 lbs test. I really like both style of fishing but slightly leading toward baitcaster move because it felt rewarding after all the effort I put in it.

Problem with the baitcasters is they all need to go back to the drawing board in the parts breaking...coming loose, etc....and even in backlash and casting distances. If I am not mistaken, there is a company that is 100% no backlash from Europe but it is still crowd funding. Could be a scam. Would be great for night fishing. I have some expensive stuff from Steez to Zillion and I can find flaws in them real quick, even being a "noob" at it. I can't even take apart my reels to clean them. Really hate that with baitcasters they give poor people cheap reels if you don't spend $500. These last few years, they've been trickling down top teir technology into the cheapers reels via immense competition, but we are not there yet. For the money, something like the SLX XT is worth it. I can't speak for other reels. The new KastKing Pro in purple seems legit for what you get for $90. The technology in the line guide, the internal, bearings, frame, etc. are all there. Now, we just need to test it to see if it lives up to the hype and durability.

To me, it's the line test size .8 pound or less spinning, 10 or more baitcaster. Also, plug weights 1/4 or less spinning greater baitcaster in general BFS is whole different ball game. Read the lure weights on the bfs rod don't go over
