My name is Abbie Emmons I teach writers how to make their stories matter by harnessing the power and psychology of storytelling, transforming their ideas into a masterpiece, and creating a lifestyle that makes their author dreams come true.
Story isn’t about “what happens” - it’s about how what happens affects and transforms the characters. I believe that there is an exact science (a recipe, if you will) behind a perfect story. And if you know what ingredients you need, you can create your own perfect story with ease and confidence. So, how about giving your favorite people an exciting life? Let THEM tell a good story to someone else. Then THEY will be writing the story, their story..not you. Just an idea that works for me. I know some of my characters so well that I know exactly how they would react to various things. Even if I didn't want to be in the room with them when they did.I would never think of doing so myself. But they would! See?

This sentiment was just swirling through my head, as I sit at work and It played out like a 3 act storyline. Today, I said to myself “ I have a great job. I’m blessed. But this is not what I want to do forever. Years ago, an older coworker of mine, told me, before she died of cancer, “ I wish I had pursued something more creative instead pursuing a career in this job.” Today, I said to myself, “ this is my Act 2 epiphany” then I got the notification for this video. This is a sign. Thank you. My ACT 3 is returning home and facing my enemy, procrastination.

I’m not ashamed to say, this intro made me cry. This is the video I needed to see and hear. I had a strong burst of creative energy almost two years ago where I was able to pump out several short stories in a few months then…nothing.
I thought to start reading other great works in my genre, hoping that it would burst open that gate that was barring me from creative writing. I found that it had the opposite effect. I started comparing my works with theirs and suddenly I was flooded with feelings of inadequacy. ‘Oh my gosh, I can NEVER write like that!’ and, ‘Compared to these, my ideas are boring and no one is going to want to read it.’
I’m still stalling in my writing process but videos and advice like this are helping me take the baby steps I need to eventually run towards my dreams. Even if it’s just a scribble of a word, a random scene that pops into my head as I’m driving and telling Siri to remember it for me. Most importantly, reminding myself to ‘write like no one is reading’ it but me.
Thank you Abbie and Kate. Between your two channels, I’m finding the support that I need to amplify that little voice in my head saying, ‘You can do it. Keep going.’

That sentence inspired me. I feel like I’m a terrible writer and that the story I want to tell is way too complex for me, but now after watching this video I feel like all I need is a little confidence in myself and I will be able to do it. All I need is to keep writing and, “Making it great.” And then it will be what I want it to be. Thank you so much for making these videos, encouraging and inspiring me to write.

This was just what I needed to hear, not just for my writing but for my art as well. After I was burnt out last year, it was a struggle just to pick up the brush and paint. There was no passion with it. Sometimes I even told myself that I wasnt good enough. On those days I pulled out some old artwork and looked through them, and I remembered how fun it was to paint them. Compared to my work now it wasn't much but it was more passionate. And it's the same for my writing as well. The short stories I made back then weren't of quality but they were fun to write. I trying to get that passion back. Thanks for the advice Abbie!

Some things in life, you can’t go back and change. You can change literally EVERYTHING you write though. It doesn’t have to stay the way it came down, you’re not stuck with that sentence you hate so much. You can nudge it, twist it, rearrange it until it’s right. It’s the one rare bit of absolute control you can get in this world, use that to your advantage lovely people!!!

When you said "you're not a fraud", it made me tear up. I have been trying to write my so called "forever story" that I started working on since 2012. Yeah, that long, at least for me. 2012 was a long time ago. It's not the fear of blank writing software in front of me, but more like a fear of "will this story ever be good for people who are still discovering themselves like myself?". I kinda stopped writing for myself, which is really important for me. For a person who was bullied heavily and took everything too seriously, I just stopped doing it for myself. I never had people around me who took my dream as a writer seriously, to this day people don't just understand why I want this so badly. I'm a very creative person with imaginative brain, I want them to see that "I made this thing and it makes me super happy and proud of my work!". I just want to create stories for other people to read, that's all.
Maybe I'm not a fraud after all. I'm still finding myself and learning to write every single day, whether people like or not. I'm doing this for myself.

Then I bought her templates to insert in Scriviner and realized how much work goes into a story BEFORE you can start writing it (characters outline, Acts 1,2,3, etc., etc., etc.).
I FROZE and that's where I've been for a month. I just feel overwhelmed. I did outline the female protagonist and her male love interest. I have plenty of time. I guess I just need to strap myself to my desk and follow her templates (which are wonderful) which she shows how to insert into Scriviner. I was on fire while researching it now comes the hard work - planning.

Outlining isn’t always necessary. Though it does help. I’ve been sort of trying to find a middle ground. Outline, but still have moments of spontaneity. Find the fun in a scene that gets me fired up.

I did the revision of chapter 5 of my book yesterday, took nearly all day. I had to basically rewrite the whole thing because of changes in the way I look at writing. Changes that occurred because of this particular RUclipsr/Author whose videos I've been watching. It still only gained 130 words, but it reads much better now. I'm not big on pity parties, but I don't expect this to be any better than anything else I've ever done, and nothing I've ever done has een worth anything to anyone. I'm doing it for me, and I'm my own target audience, and what other people think of it is a whole steaming pile of not my problem.

Lying in bed with a sore back, achy head, and general feeling of blehness, and all I really want to do is write, really. You're right though. Being a creative is hard work. You gotta work your arse off for a society that will never really appreciate how important art is to their continued existence and sanity. All you gotta do is keep going. As Gaiman said, "Make good art.". If the world is burning, make good art. If your life is terrible, make good art. Art saves lives. It may just save yours. So make good art, no matter what.

FINALLY you are the very first RUclips I've heard who didn't condone the fear or procrastination. My husband taught me all of this years ago and it was once I learned this that I finished my first novel. Then my second and my third and so on. My writing improves with each book and with each book I experience this fear when I go to write but I know to push past it now.
Thank you so much for sharing this for people who need it! Its a very important message!

As a younger girl who's gifted with a whole bunch of talent when it comes to writing, i take it personally when my writing just sucks. I am constantly pressured to write by my mom because she really wants me to write a book and do something with my talent. She wants the best for me, obviously. Keep writing even when you're not feeling well; it may be therapeutic. As long as I keep moving forward, I don't care how I feel. Eventually, I feel better and my attitude improves. Even the most accomplished and successful authors often have to push themselves to write, no matter how they feel. In my opinion, this mindset applies to whatever you do, whether you're writing, reading, teaching, cooking, or anything else. Thanks for sharing valuable content. Keep up the fantastic job.

Good points. I was a professional artist (oil painter) for 11 years. I worked in the studio of a famous artist (I and some others made his paintings, he signed them and sold them for millions). It didn't matter if I didn't feel like painting. I went to work, clocked in, and painted.
Then when I got home it was time to paint my own work, after painting someone else's work for 8 or 9 hours! A lot of the time I didn't FEEL like doing it. But sometimes I'd just make myself pick up the brush with one hand, force it in the other, and just DO it. After 20 minutes everything almost always started to gel and I just kept going. And I did my own work consistently, not just my boss's work.

But I have to admit, there were times when I felt like I've given up on my dreams of being an author and thought that I have lost my passion for writing. I’ve been told by an English teacher in high school that I was way too tangental in my writing. Writing has been my escape from reality and before then, I wrote fearlessly. But from then and observing that about my writing it has become a little voice that says, “you are not making sense. This idea is stupid. You have too much going on. How does it relate???” And I shut down for days at a time and I find myself thinking “I’ll never be good enough”.
