DIY Soda Can Stove!

  • Build a pocket sized stove out of just soda cans! It's cheap, easy and extremely handy! The DIY Jet Stove uses rubbing alcohol as fuel. It's a fun and educational project that you can bring with you in travelling or camping.
    WHAT YOU NEED:
    - Two Empty Soda Cans
    - Multitool/ Swiss Army Knife (bit.ly/2T6legM)
    - 1.0mm Sewing Needle
    - Superglue
    HOW IT WORKS:
    - The stove operates by a jet cycle process. Once the walls of the can stove are heated, the liquid fuel inside starts to evaporate. The evaporated fuel exits the holes and mixes with air. The mixtures ignites, creating the stove's flames. The flame heats up the can's walls and the process repeats itself to create a self sustaining ignition process until the fuel runs out.
    HOW TO USE:
    - Fill the stove with 20-30mL of fuel.
    - Cover the fuel inlet with a penny.
    - Pour fuel on/ around the stove and set it on fire.
    - Repeat the process until the flames appear.
    - Heating the can's side with a lighter also helps.
    FUEL:
    - The fuel choice greatly affects the start-up ignition process. The stove operates with and volatile liquid fuel with lower boiling points.
    - RUBBING ALCOHOL, being the most common household item, works with this stove just fine. It isn't the best, but it does the job! Using this as fuel takes a longer time for the stove to ignite and start working
    - DENATURED ALCOHOL, is the perfect choice for this stove, it evaporates quickly to its purity. Unlike rubbing alcohol, denatured alcohol doesn't contain a mix of water and moisturizers.
    - ACETONE, KEROSENE, LIGHTER FLUID also works. But I wouldn't recommend these since they are too volatile and can be dangerous around kids.

put some glass wool (fiberglass insulation) inside to keep the fuel from sloshing around for a steady, safer burn.

Cut out the top middle section and it can be used for vaseline and cotton balls fires too. Just an inch and a bit would do.

A classic project in a modern nicely made video. Well done.
Two nice upgrades could be using the waste of the can for a wind shield and pot stand< plus I always heard adding another wall of aluminum inside the cans with holes at the bottom helps with functionality.

I like the video and the idea has been around for a long time but, the required items isn't accurate and there are better ways to do this
Improvement 1 instead of emptying can then cutting, use utility knife or blade to score a line around the cutting points then empty the can, this will give you a solid cutting edge as the liquid and pressure inside an unopened can will push against you for scoring,
Improvement 2, you said all you need is a Swiss army knife and 2 cans, then there was glue, needle, sandpaper and a drill added later,

there is another version of stove using tuna can (2 inches in height). 1.open the can 2. remove the tuna 3. punch holes around the tuna near the lid using small nail and hammer 4.use denature alcohol for better results.

    • @Sokol10

What you describe it's a different type, a open top, low pressure side burner.
The one in the video is the classic "Penny stove" a pressurized top jet burner type.
Anyway, both types was surpassed by the "Capillarity Hope Stove" type, a bit difficult to make because require specific Asian cans.

These small and lightweight can stoves are used for fill the Ultra Light hiking needs, boil a half litter (2 cups) of water for reidrate food, make hot beverages (coffee, tea...). They don't have autonomy for real cook, at most, they are capable of cooking a paste.
