I had a hybrid A class. I got rid of it after 6 months. It was a pain in the arse to keep charged, get charged and put fuel in too often. My range was meant to be 45 miles and you’d be lucky if I got 20 miles. But used to take 2 hours to charge. I went back to full petrol and now I get 300 miles plus before I have to put fuel in.
Hi Nick, another great video, many thanks. I do find on my EQC that I am much more efficient around town than at a constant speed on a main road. I use the Regen braking to slow the car and only use the brakes or Hold to keep the car stationary. So with so many stop starts there is plenty of recharging to be had. I also don't carry anything in the car that is not needed, and keep the car clean. A clean polished car will slip through the air more efficiently than a dirty one. You're doing a great job, keep it up.
Another great video. I’ve had my EQA just over a year now and still love it. One thing that you forget to mention though is the D-Auto drive mode. I find this achieves the best balance between responsiveness and efficiency. It also appears to enable all the driving assist features such as brake assist, speed limit assist, etc.
Wow THANK YOI for this video! I literally had a costumer ask me about that! Now I can have a really good response thank you!!!!! Btw hi from Mercedes Benz of Valencia in California!
Use the Hold feature at lights. (long press of the break pedal) this reduces the amount of power usage. It's only a small amount but ever little helps EQA 12 months will not be going back to ICE
Great video and really helpful for all that are new to EVs I find Mercedes displayed range, the most accurate of all EVs I've owned. I'm often able to get more than displayed On my EQV, for longer journeys I always use max range and adaptive cruise, I then find my estimated arrival charge goes up while driving along. Heated seats and starting wheel use less energy than the heating, something else to consider
Hi Nick, thanks for the very useful videos. I have a 2022 GLE350De which is a diesel hybrid. I did a lot of reading before I bought it. It claims that it will do maximum 60 miles on electric but I am doing max 30 miles , not using air con or heating. I drive in London and mostly weekend but the electric range is almost the same every time , only 30miles so 50% less. I have found that I have to charge the battery every week if I wanted to drive only electric and that is costing a lot. When using diesel I get much more miles per £. The car is nice but the fact that is hybrid does not save any money , in fact costs more. I am glad I did not go for the fully electric option as charging it takes hours and when comparing miles delivered it is not value for money.
Hey Labi Labi, no worries! Glad you enjoy them! It all depends where you get your electricity from and for the miles you achieve, depends on where you drive. If you’re driving in London, it will be a very tricky to achieve the quoted range as you’ll need to be travelling between 40mph & 60mph for the vast majority of the journey (that’s how WLTP is quoted). Lots of stop/start journeys in a built up area will decrease this. For charging costs? It depends where you get your electricity from, some places can be expensive but some places can very extremely cheap.
Honest questions, Nick, do you read all the manuals? Do you go through intensive training at some Mercedes academy type of thing? Do you spend most of your time experimenting everything you can on all Mercedes models? Or all of the above? 😅 Seriously, the amount of things, useful things!, that I've learned here about my car that I would never learn otherwise. Thank you and please, keep making these videos. 😀👍
Thank you Bia Fernandes! 🤓 Haha sometimes I might read the manual if I’m not sure about something but honestly most of the time I press buttons and see what happens! But even then I’ll pick something up weeks or months later and cars often have Tips & Tricks hidden 😆 Thank you though! I’ll keep them coming!
Bia, Nick is an absolute connoisseur of Mercedes and should be employed by them. Such dedication - a rare commodity these days. @Nick O'Leary - keep it up mate, brilliant!
Great video Nick! I've had my EQC AMG for 12 months now and some of these tips are great (and new to me). One thing I tend to do is to keep in in D-- mode for max re-gen. I wonder if you can tell me if that's wise? The biggest thing I find that helps the range especially at this time of year is keeping the tyres inflated at the correct levels. Thanks again fora great vid.
I have an A250e hybrid and Mercedes say that the bat range is 44 miles. It’s never been above 35 miles and is currently at 25 miles of range. It’s a massive difference.
It's a marketing thing. There are a few producers that will tell you the real consumption.. like Hyundai or Tesla. If you have two producers whit same price but the range will differ.. which you'll buy? I have a plugin E300 and the range never exceeded 36 km in sumer and 26 km in winter. Wltp has nothing to do with reality. You do not drive the car in a laboratory.. :))) all marketing. When you see a number cut out 30-40 percent.. and that is your real range...
@royal martin I tried in every way. I precondition the car... cruise control... no hard brakes... easy on acceleration... etc .. no more than 36 km... if I have to brake, I push just a little for regenerative brake to do the job.. etc.
Hi, I had the same issue. My battery range was 36mi and after the wife used it for a day the maximum I was getting in the display was 24mi! I went into the system, backed up my settings on a usb and then hit the reset button. When the car had reset the range returned with 42mi in the display. After a day of my driving style this reduced to about 36-38mi but stayed there until the weather got cooler. Now we’re in November it’s averaging 32mi. Is there a way to just reset the driving style without resetting the entire Mbux system??
@pgups781 but that’s not how a range computer is meant to work. I’ve made videos talking about this exact thing before. A range computer in a plug-in hybrid is no different to a petrol or diesel in fact they’ve been around for years. The only thing different is that now we as drivers pay more attention to them and notice that the number changes. It’s goes up and goes down over time. It is an estimated range based on how you’ve driven before. For example I left the other day, full tank, 320 mile range on my car, when I got there 310 miles remain, but I’d actually driven over 100 miles. Topped up with fuel and then it showed over 400 miles. It’s because I drove at an economical speed and avoided traffic as it was very early in the morning so the car adjusted its estimate. Resetting the entire car doesn’t give you more range, in fact after resetting it now is probably going to give you an incorrect number because it doesn’t have any driving history based on your drive. So it might say 42 miles, but you’re not going to get 42 miles if you doing under 30mph in a built up area. Let me know if this makes sense and I can explain a bit more 🙏
Hi Nick, great video as usual..quick question, do these EVs on there Regen braking put on the brake lights when slowing down as when set agressively I can see people getting rear ended if not aware the car is slowing down?..thx Jase..
Cracking video as usual. Just come back from a 3 week holiday to find my GLE350de is now only charging to 41 miles. It used to charge to over 66 miles…. It even charged to 70 miles once. The vehicle is 13 months old. Any advice ?
Hey Chris it’ll be exactly why in the video 🤓 The range indicator is adaptive and is just adapting to where and how you’re driving now. The colder weather also has an impact too
Hi Nick, thanks for sharing. I have a two months old EQA 250+. As any newbee, I have a question; infact two :-) : Is it OK to charge the battery every night (e.g. to 80%) so that we have enough firepower the next day? Does the daily charging have a negative impact on the battery health?
That’s alright! 👍🏼 Yes you can charge every night. The main thing with lithium-ion batteries is that they are absolutely fine with charging to any percentage however for longevity of the battery, they recommend 80% and pop it up to 100% as when required. If this is your first EV (first few days)I would strongly recommend making use of the full extent of the battery so you get used to it to remove any range worries! The battery is there to be used! I’m also planning on some topics on that car soon so make sure you’re subscribed! Hopefully should be ready by the end of the year! But yes more advanced tips state to only charge to 80% if you’re not using the full extent day to day if that makes sense. But you can plug-in as many times as you like 🤓
Thanks Nick for a detailed and very clear explanation. I asked the same question on a few other forums but never got clear answer. I am a BIG fan of yours now 😊. Will for sure follow your channel....keep up the great work!!!
Awh thank you! I’ve got some plans for a small batch of EV content (spaced out for the non EV owners and viewers) but keep an eye out next month! I sometimes do the same for my phone battery too although most days I do use it a lot 😅
Hi Nick, one more coming your way...is there a way to check the battery temperature before and after pre-entry climate control (with charging cable plugged in)?
No I don’t believe so, not seen that on any car. It’s thermally regulated automatically. There is of course the coolant temperate which you can view but not the battery temp (from what I’ve seen anyway)
Thanks Nick for your videos. I got a EQC for 1 1/2 year now. The avg consumption has really increased. Never charge to more than 80% except if I need to drive far. Most only charge at home except on trips. I drive 800km trips 8 times a year. 2 questions. Prepare battery during long trip for faster charging speed. Last winter I got max charge speed even with sub temperatures. This winter even with 10 Celsius outside I got 70kwh. (Tried multiple different ionity stations) When on a long drive is there a way to preheat battery to be ready for charging when arriving at the 1st / 2nd / etc charging stop? 45000km. The consumption is now avg 4kwh/100km higher than it was the 1st year. Regardless of weather or driving style. Is that normal? Had a replacement eqc for 1 week and got 22kwh/100km on my normal commute without trying.. It felt like my EQC when I first got it. Got my car back and I get 26kwh/100km if I really really try otherwise higher. Or is my car already considered old and this is normal?
Thanks J S, glad you love the videos! It’s hard to say for things like that, as there are so many variables. For example charge speed, DC charging will rarely charge at max speed all the time as batteries charge faster between 10-80%. So it depends on the state of charge, the charger itself (some have a variable speed), the temperature exterior and temperature of the battery itself. In terms of the battery temperature it’s not something that you can adjust as it’s maintained by the car just like an engine so it’s no different on that point. Sadly I’ve not owned an EQC so not sure what energy consumption is like long term but I wouldn’t of thought that would make that much of a difference. If you don’t think something’s right, I’d probably say to just contact your local Mercedes and they can take a look. 🤓
I have a question : I have one Mercedes‘ A250e and some days my electric range changed to 37 km from 60km but Nothing change on me or weather ! Is it problem with my battery ?
Ah but where you’re driving, your speed and what you encounter on the road changes though 🤓 Plug-in Hybrids and Electric Cars range varies massively and the range indicator on the screen will change and give you an estimated reading based on what it thinks you’ll get. Of course as you mentioned, weather, use of A/C will also affect it too.
@@npoleary I have one Mercedes‘ A250e and have the same satiation one days my electric range changed to 27 km from 55km but Nothing change on me my way or weather ist a problem with the battery or softwear?
Just had a MBUX software update on my A250e 2022 W177 update on 7 Dec 22 Can you do a video or explain what (if any) new functionality has been provided ? Thank you
Hey 1nostro, really sorry Mercedes don’t release update notes on cars. They’re mainly for bug fixes etc or security patches. That would be good if they did though! I’m always curious!
@@npoleary many thanks Nick. Perhaps you can make a request through the Mercedes network. Each update should have a list of changes, lest something goes wrong on the car and a load of unhappy customers find their car is not working. I know updates are throughly tested before implementation, however things do creep in. Looking forward to your next interesting video.
Thank you! Yes that would be good, sadly cars in general don’t really disclose software updates although as you said it would be good. You can sort of remotely check, on the Mercedes me app you can go in here and look at software updates. This will show updates that come through but I presume they’re just for fixes etc…
"you can put the heating on before you get to it" ... that makes me wonder, do they offer auxiliary pre-heating on non-electric Mercedes cars like they do here in Germany? I've got "Standheizung" on my current S-Class car and had it on an earlier E-Class too. It can be operated via timer (or the separate remote control which has a really long range).
Ive recently brought a 2020 CLA 250e and the max charge for the battery gives me anxiety lol. After each journey im looking at what the max charge level has gone to. Brand new Mercedes says max charge of 44 miles. Ive never charged it higher than 33 and when i do plug it in the max charge range always goes down by the time its done charging. Nick any thoughts on this?
Yeah it’s just an estimate All cars are exactly the same so don’t worry! 😅 All cars have a range indicator that predicts based on how and most importantly where you drive.
@npoleary this is what i mean. Plugged it in earlier with a max range of 30 miles. Only been charging 5 mins and already down to 29. Very frustrating! Would a new battery make a difference under battery warranty?
No it showing less range is completely normal. Unless you’re physically going out and purposely driving between 40mph to 60mph with minimal traffic and no air con you will not get the full range of a plug-in hybrid or an EV. Manufacturers do tests under WLTP which shows you the best range in the best conditions. It depends where you live as well and the average speed you achieve on any particular journey.
Nick - my GLA has started making a weird buzzing sound like a fan running out of battery from the central light area. It does it for a few minutes after the car first starts. Any ideas? Service is due in 6 weeks so I just mention it then?
Hey James, I’ve not heard of that before or heard anyone mention anything similar in the comments so I’d probably mention it when booking it in or something and get them to take a look 👍🏼
My understanding is using the foot brake drains the battery. Instead, try to coast, rolling stop to a junction and use the paddles D- and D- - to also help you brake especially going downhill. This will add miles to the battery (I kid you not). Takes a bit of getting used to but it also saves brake wear which can be an issue with heavy electric vehicles. I tend to drive in comfort mode all the time. EQV owner for 12 months
It won’t drain the battery but the most efficient way is to use the brake regeneration on the paddles. Using the brake pedal does use brake regen as well but it’ll fade in the actual brake pads and discs at times when needed. It’ll still recoup though from that method so both are efficient but if there’s a hint that you might get more power from just recuperation alone then I’d defo be doing that!
I've had this change on my EQV, when you're below about 5% battery charge the max power will start to reduce, to try and help you make it to a charger, some manufacturers it's turtle mode
Hi Nick. New 250e PHEV driver and I've noticed that sometimes when i lift off the accelerator to coast the car slows down more quickly, it feels as if I've dropped to a lower gear or left a handbrake on a notch. It's very noticeable and unpleasant! Is this normal? Can i remove this effect? I drive in Comfort or Battery Level mode, brake assist is set to mid.
Ah that’s just the automatic brake regeneration kicking in as you approach another car. It’ll do enough to match the car in front. All cars that have some form of electric on their drivetrain (EV’s, plug-in hybrids and mild hybrids) have this. Might be doing a video on this sort of topic (similar to) in the future in a few months. It’s been a very long time since I’ve had access to a Mercedes A 250e so if it’s still the same if you drive in EL mode you can adjust the brake recuperation using the paddles. Set it to something like D+ and I think it might reduce it.
It's quite normal for the range of that car to be in the range you mentioned👍🏼 34 miles is what's quoted under WLTP but it all depends where you're driving and what you're using. If you want to ever do a test yourself of the range of car, you'll need roads at speeds of 40mph - 60mph, 23°C ambient temp and barely any traffic and driven in the most economical way without use of A/C and heating. Warranty is for 6 years for Plug-in Hybrids last time I reviewed one at my local Mercedes but check with them to 100% sure.
If a plug-in hybrid is really low on battery, it may still start silently but the engine will come on as you go to accelerate on a main road. So car park speeds it might be silent. If it’s not been charged in a while then the engine might just come on from the start.
@c4lho888 it kind of doesn’t really have a traditional starter motor. It’s a generator and starts instantaneously. Quite a few cars have this now, compared to a traditional starter it can do loads more start/stops.
Shit.... i got scared when been using my CLA 250e, at the begining full charged was around 55km.... then 2 weeks later 48..... and now dramaticly lowered to 36 and scaried me like "your battery is going die soon" . There was an "key AC on" every time when car unlocked AC started, sometimes 3 times a day with no driving just for sit in it or take sht out. There is too many things we have to know
Hello, Nick! Can you please explain the Battery Level driving mode? I just got my new GLA 250e and I am trying to figure out which driving mode is the best to use in order to get the best consumption. Best regards!
Already covered that one: ruclips.net/video/QzSYEP2eOSI/видео.html Comfort or Eco is the best and charge when you can. The more you charge the cheaper it’ll be 🤓
Hey Leigh, WLTP isn’t Mercedes. WLTP is an independent test done, all manufacturers have to do it in a certain way to ensure everyone does the same test. From feedback on my videos, Mercedes are actually one of the more accurate on their range indicators and having personal experience with them I can vouch for that 🤓👍🏼 They’re not allowed to lie on range tests as that would be misleading so rest assured they are accurate
@@npoleary Hi Nick I have a Mercedes E300e, the WLTP for this car is I believe 35 miles. In reality, the best range possible in this car is 21 miles, and during the winter this falls to as low as 17. Very disappointed particularly as the boot space is so seriously compromised.
Hey Leigh, yes that’s right, WLTP (depending on the wheel size and specification) was around 31 miles if I recall. I have achieved 32 from one before during summer months but yes if it’s colder, plug-in hybrids and electric cars won’t be able to travel as far so you must factor that in. Best way to help is to use Pre-Entry Climate Control and get the car warmed up prior to travelling, that way the car doesn’t have to work so hard to keep the interior warm 🤓

Ah but where you’re driving, your speed and what you encounter on the road changes though 🤓
Plug-in Hybrids and Electric Cars range varies massively and the range indicator on the screen will change and give you an estimated reading based on what it thinks you’ll get.
Of course as you mentioned, weather, use of A/C will also affect it too.
@@npoleary I have one Mercedes‘ A250e and have the same satiation one days my electric range changed to 27 km from 55km but Nothing change on me my way or weather ist a problem with the battery or softwear?
Just had a MBUX software update on my A250e 2022 W177 update on 7 Dec 22
Can you do a video or explain what (if any) new functionality has been provided ?
Thank you
Hey 1nostro, really sorry Mercedes don’t release update notes on cars.
Thanks Nick. I noticed that in winter the range drops for 100km on EQC so going from 370km to 270km, is that normal?
Yes it can do, depends how cold it is and the journeys you’re doing etc
Hi Nick, when using regen breaking does this trigger the break lights?
Of course 🤓 anything more than normal regen will trigger them
"you can put the heating on before you get to it" ... that makes me wonder, do they offer auxiliary pre-heating on non-electric Mercedes cars like they do here in Germany? I've got "Standheizung" on my current S-Class car and had it on an earlier E-Class too. It can be operated via timer (or the separate remote control which has a really long range).
No sadly not, just on EV’s and Plug-in Hybrids here in the UK
@@npoleary I wonder why. It gets cold in Britain too 😁
Not sure! Could have done with that this morning! 😅
Yeah it’s just an estimate
All cars are exactly the same so don’t worry! 😅
All cars have a range indicator that predicts based on how and most importantly where you drive.
Fantastic tips again nick I have just bought a new glc 300e love it but would be better if the regen was better
What is the Max Power gauge referring to? It's always 'full', it never changes.
Just like petrol/diesel if it’s really cold, power will be limited. Mainly freezing conditions is where this will happen
How do you setup the eco mode as default? It always go into comfort mode on my EQC
Sadly you can’t, all car manufacturers have to start in their default mode
You can change it straight afterward though once started 🤓
Anyway to remove the calculated range on ICE Mercedes?
No sadly not, it’s always there on the screen just to show you
i have a 2020 c300de the eletric range is getting less its on 20 miles on full chanrge how long is the battery warrenty for?
It's quite normal for the range of that car to be in the range you mentioned👍🏼
34 miles is what's quoted under WLTP but it all depends where you're driving and what you're using.
@npoleary do you know how the car starts wen the car needs more power dose it start with the starter motor or dose it start by rolling ?
If a plug-in hybrid is really low on battery, it may still start silently but the engine will come on as you go to accelerate on a main road. So car park speeds it might be silent.
If it’s not been charged in a while then the engine might just come on from the start.
what i mean is dose it always start with the starter as it will prlong the life off the starter@@npoleary
@c4lho888 it kind of doesn’t really have a traditional starter motor. It’s a generator and starts instantaneously. Quite a few cars have this now, compared to a traditional starter it can do loads more start/stops.
Hey nick what’s your car video about electric cars
Sure is! Electric Cars 😎
Shit.... i got scared when been using my CLA 250e, at the begining full charged was around 55km.... then 2 weeks later 48..... and now dramaticly lowered to 36 and scaried me like "your battery is going die soon" .
Already covered that one: ruclips.net/video/QzSYEP2eOSI/видео.html
Comfort or Eco is the best and charge when you can. The more you charge the cheaper it’ll be 🤓
Is there a way to make the Sport mode default rather than the Comfort mode? (in order to save the battery when it is limited)
No sadly not Comfort is the default on all Mercedes. Most cars have to start in their default mode but you can change it after
Why is my electric range less? Because Mercedes regularly lie and exaggerate about range and MPG.
Hey Leigh, WLTP isn’t Mercedes.
WLTP is an independent test done, all manufacturers have to do it in a certain way to ensure everyone does the same test.
From feedback on my videos, Mercedes are actually one of the more accurate on their range indicators and having personal experience with them I can vouch for that 🤓👍🏼
They’re not allowed to lie on range tests as that would be misleading so rest assured they are accurate
@@npoleary Hi Nick
I have a Mercedes E300e, the WLTP for this car is I believe 35 miles.
D auto big omission in this cideo
Covered that in a separate video 🤓
It’s one of my latest ones 😎
