- hypnotic candy from Call of the West, once again with most amazing lyrics by Stan Ridgway : "....Well, I like to know what I'm doin' when I do it, And I do what I'm doin' 'cause I don't know what to do when I'm not doin' it ..." irrefutable !

Stan Ridgway was, and still is, a musical and lyrical genius!
Got all the albums cassette tapes CDs and now the RUclips this band has carried me through problems and delightfulness
Yes indeed, Stan is and was, but this band as a unit had a chemistry and level of originality that we'll never see again.
CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED
One of my favorite Wall of Voodoo songs. It's cool how the drums have that metallic, industrial sound and how the harmonica mimics the blaring factory horn. The lyrics are amazingly written, too. This song gave me goosebumps the first time I heard it, it's true.
Pretty sure that harmonica is supposed to be a saw or some other machine, but, either way.
Trendy song in Italy in 80's 👍 Love the drum line 🤩
Everyone knows “Mexican Radio.” It’s a great pop hit and famous singalong from the 80s.
But for me, “Factory” is the track that truly displays the brilliance of this band. A minor masterpiece of the dark “avant-pop” music Wall Of Voodoo was famous for creating.
And “Factory” reveals just how dark WOV pop could go during the New Wave era. While the Talking Heads, Gary Neumann and a few other bands of the time were willing to explore themes of disassociation, angst and even despair - none went as far as WOV - and fewer still managed to keep their music as eerie and foreboding yet also catchy and compelling as WOV.
“Factory” - for all its alienating manufacturing-floor-like percussion and wailing horror-movie-like harmonica - it also has a sinister, yet hooky-as-hell surf guitar lick as the driving engine of the song.
And - despite the skin-crawling lyrics and long, drawn out “I”s of a man whose only escape from an industrial time-loop of a job that took his hand and humanity is to fall asleep in front of the TV - despite the overwhelming darkness of a song that takes you to the ignition point of spousal abuse - it also manages a melodic, catchy, singalong chorus as well. Nothing quite as fun as Mexican Radio - but still - a chorus that will wind up getting you belting out the lyrics “And I’ve got another factory back home / got a little backyard, pink Mustang, fenders chrome” after just a few listens.
And therein lies the genius of Wall Of Voodoo.
This is such a great track from a great album. One of two bands that I have always thoroughly enjoyed and admired for their intelligent lyrics, message and quirky delivery, Wall of Voodoo and Devo.
Absolutely.
this is an all time masterpiece. love this song
another superb atmospheric track from the best band I have ever seen. Ahead of there time and so underrated.
What makes you believe they're underrated?
@@gogoyubari366 is this even a serious question ?
The Critics never much cared for them at the time , and no one I know has heard of them .
Also look at the views and likes/dislikes etc. in ten years
Mamma mia....quanto tempo!!!....FANTASTICI!!!!
Wall of Voodoo turns the mundane into the amazing.
Brings back memories. Used to listen to these guys all the time! Great music and lyrics.
Love the off-kilter guitar work. Brilliant song. Perfect expression of a noisy, boring, repetitive, soul-crushing factory job. Just part of the machinery.
This is the kind of thing that makes W.O.V. more than just another pretty little New Wave band.
I could not agree with you More(land). I've been there & done that. These lyrics go great with describing what its like in the mundane life of a factory worker. And the sounds!.... Whoa!
Yes, they nailed this one in a big way.....
Some people like me still remember this...Classic
I remember.
This is amazing. Reminds me (it's a compliment) of really oldschool country, back when it had a point and a story to tell. Good stuff. Heard OF them but never really heard them. Better late than never.
"I put the same piece o chicken in the bag..." I remember wondering as a child if this was a portent to the bleak future, 30 years later I think its the portent to everyones future.
37 years later. Still is.
I hear it 1982 and from this day to today i love it.
Great, very excellent song!
These guys were amazing live. I got to see them two times in Houston, once in Cullen Auditorium and once at #s
i saw them live at the Paradise here in Boston when I was in Art School. I talked to them after the show in the lobby after the show - very cool band
You fucks i hate u
Perhaps their best song. I had a chance to see them in 1985 (post Ridgeway) open for Adam Ant but got grounded because my stupid friend who drove and stupid me left my sister in the mall with her friend during a school day during lunch. At least I got to see The Pain Teens in 1992 in Hotlanta where years later WOV percussionist Joe Nanini died .
One of my favorite bands since childhood, no one else ever sounded like them, this spaghetti western groove and ridgeways voice are unparalleled in their genre... I had Mexican radio on a 45 , call of the west was the b side. This is one of my favorites along with longarm and Mexican radio of course...
Well I like to know what I'm doin' when I do it and I do what I'm doin' 'cause I don't know what to do when I'm not doin' it.
Very well said.I call it ; "Southwestern Dada". It sounds like machinery.
All time favourite album
This.
I _like_ this.
master piece! it all comes together.
I've seen Stan Ridgeway for 10 years at the Belly Up in Encinitas California hours of great show
That harmonica, any connection to Sergio Leone's 'Once Upon A Time In The West'?
Goofy-cool.. 1st heard this tune on RUclips several years ago. Instantly liked it. Haven't an idea how I located this song?.. but I'm glad that I found it. Likely I remembered 'Mexican Radio' as a teenager and found it on RUclips researching enjoyable tunage. Another thought.. it may have appeared in the suggested list when I was listening to Talking Heads 'Psycho Killer' two bands that are quite different. But both are a pleasantly a bit goofy..
Mexican Radio
The best video from the classic MTV era...cracks me up to this day!
Is there any more of an existential song as this one?
Lost Weekend? Back in Flesh?
probably influenced the equally brilliant Gas Crankin' Station. Headless Chickens
True genius.
"i dunno man; sounds like you got more of a wall of VOODOO .. " --their first producer
Amazing memories from the summer of my years.
bella bella bella bella
Space music to me!!!
Oh,Ollie,more great stuff....
Listening to these guys at first I thought they were nuts!! But they actually made sense!!
Reminds me on Western, Bars, Guns and steelworks
Fucking awesome song! Really should have been the follow up hit to Mexican Radio.
Ridgeway at his best!!
Just lately when my wife talks back to me I slap her around. I'm not a woman beater but C'mon, when I first heard that verse, I laughed! And I don't know why I lose my hair! Another funny verse. With all that said, this is a beautifully written song, if you look past some of the funny stuff.
They hate working a 9 to 5
I can relate to this song
This song sounds like something in reference to the Kaiser Steel.
YABBA DABBA DOO!
Cosmicsound
.....stitch where my thumb was......
mysteriously awesome... if that makes sense.
Space guitar for sure!
This sounds like it would fit right in in the “Armageddon Days [Are Here Again]” The The album!
A very pioneering musically anecdotal source of jurisprudence, and Personnel turned Human Resource Management knowledge base of drivers of what is now clearly Sexual Harassment. The Pink Mustang is still good!
Faxx
I never worked at a factory, Lol
Space Music!!!!

Maybe when I find it I can pitch it....
Ridgeway is the best!
....and I don't know why I lose my hair........
Barraca Valencia
... not too fan of the "voodoo"musical style, but must recognize that these lyrics works more than OK ! *
