Saw them do 2 shows at the famed club "688" in Atlanta. . .back in '82. The band was touring to support "Call of the West". While in town, they had band equipment stolen and had to use borrowed instruments and yet, the shows were the best I can ever remember seeing at that club. Ever. Really incitement writing and a strong sense of timing with their Western theme tales of dark noir lives. Stan Ridgway was a fabulous frontman and lyricist. Marc Moreland's guitar work, Chaz Gray's keyboards and synthesizer and drummer/percussionist Joe Nanini excellent rhythms left an indelible impression. This could have easily been a super band had they not broken up. It's hard to believe that this was 40 years ago.

They have two versions of this, and I'm not sure which I prefer. I like them both. In their live version Mark Moreland does that riff that's repeated throughout the song on his guitar. On this one it's on a keyboard.

What a beautifully evocative song. Wall of Voodoo made some highly cinematic music, Lost Weekend being a perfect example. The melancholy harmonica, the spacey synths, chugging drum machine beats, and a very Spanish-sounding guitar style, all mixed in a potent tale of desperate people hanging on to slim dreams. That synth fade-out always sends a chill down my spine!

Drivin' outta Vegas in their automobile
She was in the back seat while he was at the wheel
    With the windows wide open
All the money from the store, they'd gambled away
He said "the best laid plans often go astray"
She took the page of a book and turned it down
She lit a cigarette, she didn't make a sound
"And I know, if we'd had just one more chance," he said
"I know, we'd finally hit the big one at last", she said
    (Instead of) another lost weekend
    Lost weekend
    Another lost weekend
    Lost weekend
"Pull over soon," she said, "it's no big deal,
You can take any exit that you happen to feel
    Is the right one"
    The right one
As she slowly blew her smoke out the rear wind vent
She thought back on all the letters she'd sent
For a contest to be on a quiz game show
"Maybe I shoulda stayed in school," he said
"Yeah, I know - start your own business cleanin' swimming pools," she said
    (instead of) another lost weekend
    lost weekend
    another lost weekend
    lost weekend
She leaned over the front seat and twiddled with the radio dial
She looked out the window, saw a sign, and both of them began to smile
"There's a place we can stay at...
    ... it's up another mile."

Once in a while, a song comes along that has a place on a record that many mainstream listeners ignore - or, in this case, pay most attention to one song: "Mexican Radio." That's a cool song, but "Lost Weekend" just drips with American social commentary, abandon, despair. So much. This sounds cliche but it's absolutely true. The first time I heard it, I went (to my friend who was introducing me to this great band for the first time), "Hey, let's hear this one again." And again. When I bought the album, I played this one first. Occasionally - like right now, I refer back to it decades later and continue to see brilliance. :-)

A friend and I left Washington, D.C. to go to a BBQ in Kansas City when this first came out, and this was among the cassettes ( remember those? and vinyl? ) we bought for the trip. Though the long weekend was mostly just an excuse for a road trip, as he shoved this tape into the cassette box, he said, "Let's agree that if either of us at anytime this weekend says 'this may not be a good idea, whatever it is, we won't do it.' ". That was about the last thing I remember from that trip. LOL.

Stan's best vocals. No embellishment, just straight up letting the song sing itself. So many great WOV songs. Many where he used a staccato rhythm (Mexican Radio, Factory) or sing-songy quality (Camouflage) which entertained, but this song rests on the listener like a blanket and stays with you.

@@alonenoonetotrust2277 Hi I also have a connection with Bruce. We exchanged a few e mails a few years ago. I wanted more information about Stan's contribution to the actual music of WOV. He confirmed what I had heard that Stan contributed just bits musically. I met Bruce and Marc (and the rest of WOV) at gigs in England in the 1980's. I saw them in London/Manchester/Birmingham. Best band I have ever seen live.
Yes I have watched you tube clips of Ravens Moreland (heavier sound than WOV but I like them ) over the years. Didn't know there was an album out though . Will investigate further !
ps I saw and liked WOV with both Stan and Andy as lead singer. Bit it really annoys me when people say that WOV were Stan's band and were not the same after he left .

RE VOLT 77-84 was a great period but there was plenty of brilliant music after that date Bands that emerged later in the decade eg Thin White Rope, Throwing muses) but the 90's also produced great innovative bands such as Portishead etc .
I was around in these times . Funny thing is that in that punk/post punk new wave era of the late 1970's/early 1980's the older generation said "not as good as the 60's"

    • @revolt8664
      @revolt8664 9 лет назад

Keith Bate Yes...some great stuff in every generation. Thing is I'm not seeing the lasting influence of the 90s on much. Much of the 90s was late 70's and 80s influenced. This generation even more so as many are outright copies. I enjoyed the 90s up until 94 after this quite a bit of schlock...kind of like the eighties. A few high spots no doubt. Love Portishead and even lesser known like Black Box recorder or Luxuria, Mary My hope and etc.

+Keith Bate Drummer Joe Nanini was the first casuality of WoV. He left the band and music . Moved to Atlanta with his wife. Tragically died of a brain disorder. Later, guitarist Marc Moreland passed away in Paris in '94. I saw Wov at the fabled 688 Club in Atlanta in '83. . right at the release of "Call of the West". They did two shows in two nights. THE best concerts I've ever attended on a club level. Their run as a band was all too short. Had they remained together, they would have been a super band.
