I always thought that this song was about abusing love as a way to not have to self-reflect. As long as you use love, you don't have to deal with inner demons and go through the depths of your own soul. As long as everything seems light, everything seems to be okay. But there cannot be light without darkness, so therefor, love can only save you once you have entered and accepted, challenged and even conquered yourself on your way to light.
The swan's music sort of a rockish, melancholized, bittersweet, with a bitter mix of heavy metal, and also pixies... idk how to explain it, their music is fucking transcendent and depressing simultaneously....
Love will save you when the ocean splits itself in two Love will save you when the cold wind blows right through you Love will save you when the poison eats the precious air And love will save you from the snake that crawls around down there But it won't save me Love will save you from the evil and the greed of ignorant men And love will save you from the guilt you feel when you betray your only friend Love will save you from yourself when you lose control And love will save you from all the lies your lover ever told you But it won't save me Love will save you from the truth when you think you're free Love will save you from the cold light of boring reality Love will save you from the corruption of your lazy-minded soul And love will save you from your selfish and distorted goals But it won't save me Love will save you from the black night and the lightning and the ghost Love will save you from your misery, then tie you to the bloody post Love will save you from the hands that pull you down beneath the sea Love may save all you people, but it will never, never save me

The genius of these composition lies in the fact that the "happy" section of the song starts with a c Major chord, and that chord appears several times in the song before the "happy" section comes in (when Gira says "save"). So the second section is just an extension of that little part
Anyone listening that never had to choke back a tear when the piano breaks through the driving, relentless rhythm isn't human. Michael Gira breaks your soul apart with the piano accompaniment (?) in this one.

I think this song is talking more about how people need warmth, to escape... to be saved. Some, some do not want to be saved. Some do not want to escape. So love, love will not save him, for he does not need its escape.

For me, it's like an extremely 'realistic' album. Life can be so meaningless and boring; 'love will save you from cold light of boring reality', but it can also very beautiful. I see it as the point of view of a depressed and nihilist person that enjoys life from time to time

Good hello. Thank you YGR/Swans for sharing this here. I have no players/turntables available currently, so this is a godsend. There must be hundreds of Swans racks that are hugely relevant important and beautiful to me, but wit what is happening in my life at the moment, this, paired with Miracle of Love are vastly meaningful to me. Crying my eyes out listening to this. (Next week I will think the same about Raping a Slave or something). Swans - my compendium to accompany me on life's journey. What times I have lived in to have Swans to track my trajectory as the years have rolled by. Thanks all who made it all possible.
I understand, it was the same with me... But I started to listen a little, and at this moment I prefer the other phase to this one. both phases are brilliant! but these last 4 albums, is one of the greatest moments of modern music.
Commented this one other SWANS song, but applies here as well: My girlfriend of 3 years has been experiencing her first manic episode this past week and I think I've decided that I do not want to have children with her on the basis of Procreative Beneficence, i.e. since the children have a much higher likelihood of developing BPD or something in {substance use, attention, depressive} disorder, I want to spare them, my girlfriend, and myself of the troubles. This song has helped me. I do not know whether I will marry her, but I do know that if I leave her, it will break my and her heart, and our time together will likely be remembered vividly and with nostalgia for our entire lifetimes. I do love her but there are some limits in life and my desire for the best future for my future children is stronger than my love for her, I think.
I have friends who like a lotta different underground indie goth etc stuff over the past 30yrs and I too like much of it. However there are a few singers/bands where none other will go with me: Sunset Rubdown Small Leaks Sink Ships Swans Just to name a few. And I never ever meet ppl who know most stuff I like. Good music can be lonely.

one of my favorite swans song
This is incredibly doomy...the most doom atmosphere i've ever heard from a non-doom metal band
Their early stuff out-dooms most doom bands.
so beautiful, i love swans
Wait for it.That piano cuts deep....
Yes indeed, love will save you...but it won't save many...best you make sure you're included!!!
Great song, very poetic
I badly want her back, guys.
This song kills me and, on the same time, gives me a strength
The opening of this song makes me think of a section from the Throwing Muses song “honey chain”. Just me?
beautiful
Gira is god
And God is love~

Rock and pop as a white man that needs JURIDIC WORDS OCOURRING NEAR IS THE GREAT BRAND NEW EVENT
Preach!
I have friends who like a lotta different underground indie goth etc stuff over the past 30yrs and I too like much of it. However there are a few singers/bands where none other will go with me:
Sunset Rubdown
Small Leaks Sink Ships
Swans
Just to name a few.
And I never ever meet ppl who know most stuff I like. Good music can be lonely.
