  • "People are scared to let go of their stories. We all are, let's admit it,” says Lyla June. “We have stories we use to survive. Some of them aren't true. Most of us have some kind of stories that help us get up in the morning that might not be true. So, you have to be gentle; you have to be compassionate and understanding. If someone is taught their entire life one thing and you're challenging that, understand that's what you're doing."
June spoke during the 2022 Festival of Faiths session Changing Story Keepers: Millennials and Gen Zers . The festival alum is an Indigenous musician, scholar and community organizer of Diné (Navajo), Tsétsêhéstâhese (Cheyenne) and European lineages. She blends studies in human ecology at Stanford, indigenous pedagogy and the traditional worldview she grew up with to inform her music and perspectives.
This session also features storäe michele, Najeeba Syeed and moderator Brandon McCormack. Watch the session in its entirety: • Changing Story Keepers...

    Amen Amen Amen Sister Woman!
When we choose to pick up and bear the Torch of Understanding and Compassion as Lyla has, a woman whose ancestors have been abominably oppressed and slaughtered, we will then transform the world into a vast organic garden of human kindness, cooperation, and Beauty: our Hearts openly Lovingly All That Is.

Thank you for sharing this history and this vision. I hear these words and they sound so true, that I feel like change is possible. Real, profound movement toward a better way of living, a better world, a sense of kinship across cultures and generations. I hear these words and I remember how to hope, and that the price of hope is labor to achieve that which is hoped for.
