The coverage of this was perfect. I had a different perspective when the news first leaked. It was a mistake, mistakes happen. It won't happen again. The team did a great job of showing composure and understanding. This is a good team that demands the best but also picks each other up when they're down.
That's what I love about baseball. Nothing beats being in that dugout, celebrating good times, commiserating bad times, giving advice and helping each other become better
I come back to this one a lot because its refreshing to see not just one guy but pretty much a whole team act incredibly mature and treat their teammates like humans rather than punching bags when they make a mistake. Everybody did, I think it’s because the announcer created the narrative in our minds-with the video close in of Profar. The announcer’s interpretation looks correct until you see the other wider video angle which shows Kim (the SS) out of position. I’m glad it was merely a stupid play and not an egregiously boneheaded play. The Padres lost by three runs, so the mistake wasn’t crucial to the loss. Profar needs to play better but so does the whole team. I think they were playing better before the trades (and without Tatís, the PEDophile).
@@MarcosElMalo2 Completely agree. People heard the announcer saying that Profar was challenging him and everyone had that narrative. Nobody was paying attention to where the shortstop was at that point
this is a feel good baseball moment. everything about this is likeable and what you want to see more of in baseball. those are true brothers, being able to talk and be constructive and not take it personally.
Your analysis of situations like this is something that couldn't have been done in the days before RUclips and multi-camera HD feeds of every game, but you really bring something unique and valuable (not only because of the lip-reading LOL).
Loved the breakdown and it was great that the situation was cleared up as a team misunderstanding instead of a taunting play. Also, thanks for that ending...will give me nightmares for weeks.
So Manny is going to give him some tough love, after missing a grounder (during their series against my Dodgers 8/6/2022 it was a grounder from Turner..Mookie went from First to Third) and not hustling after it allowing MOokie to take another base and get into scoring position...that Manny is going to talk to his teammates about playing right?
yea cuz he admit it was his fault and that hustle has always been his greatest flaw- plus he is playing MVP level slugging this year. and if you watched the Padres you’d know he’s the team leader anyhow. he knows better than anyone
Man I miss being in the dugout obviously not on this level but in high school it was some of the funniest shit it’s a little different than this because they are 1 the best of the best but 2 on the con side we grew up together and faced people we grew up with on the other side
What's really comforting to me about this as a Padres fan, is how differently this went from the Tatis/Machado thing late in the season last year. Even though they're not playing up to their potential right now, it shows that the vibe in the clubhouse is definitely better than last season.
I saw this moment posted on another channel (not gonna name names) and it was just Machado and Musgrove gettin on Profar. What they didn’t show was everything after, Soto puttin his arm around him and Machado talking to him, the apology to Mugrove. Puts a whole new light on it and shows they are a much more connected team working together. Thanks Jomboy for showing all the important parts
In Kim's defense, I do think he thought the play was to 2nd, but he also mirrors Profar's reading of the ball, running towards center field expecting the ball to take that bounce. Instead, the ball just falls flat and in Profar's readjusting to get the ball, the play should've been relayed to 3rd. Also, even if Kim is playing 2nd, had Profar relayed the ball, Rojas wasn't going to run 3. Good teammates tho.
The only way that play is close is if Profar throws straight to second. I was always taught gaps and wall bangs are automatic doubles and to cut third. I think it was a mental mistake of Kim’s.
This wasn't a hustle issue. It was a judgment issue. You can't blame Profar for not throwing it in to an empty base and he probably didn't think Rojas would gamble on taking third. If he throws to the cutoff and Rojas sees there's nobody on third he's gonna get there before Musgrove does to cover.
You can blame Profar. He either throws quick to the cutoff, like most people are taught. even if it was in the wrong place. Or you make a hard throw to 3rd. On top of all of this if the 3rd baseman let the ball come to him to make the tag the runners out anyway.
Thanks for posting this. I had only listened to the broadcasters' version of it and it made me consider Profar a chump. Still a dumb play but at least he wasn't trying to "dare" Rojas to take third. This is a great video.
This made me smile 😁 last time when Machado got onto Tatìs about something last year it created a more escalated argument, nothing too crazy but it seemed a little heated so it’s awesome to see them working together through their mistakes now.l
No, it was nothing that heated. Tatis wasn’t happy with a call and he was chirping so Machado had told him to stop because they needed him and that every game mattered. It wasn’t really an argument, just some tough love
I’ve been a big fan of him all season. Great defensively, got some good hitting, but always a great attitude. This video made me like him a whole lot more- and I hope we (San Diego) keep him around.
If Kim was in the wrong, why didn't a single teammate come up and correct it like they did with Profar. He definitely got caught taunting him. They/you are playing it off but I don't believe it for a second
Because Jomboy has this completely wrong and i'm flat out amazed at the number of people who are buying this bullshit lmao. Kim is nowhere near in the wrong and Jomboy has convinced these dopes he's in the "wrong spot". There is no wrong spot, Profar has to field the ball, turn and locate the cutoff and get the ball in. No, there wasn't much of a chance at 2nd, but because Profar took his sweet ass time throwing it in, he created the opportunity for Rojas to get the 3rd all by himself....a Triple was never in question until Profar went mental. I'm not convinced Profar wasn't challenging Rojas either
Every video that beat out Jomboy was saying that Profar was taunting Miguel Rojas and challenged him to run. Those video uploaded way before Jomboy was so dead wrong. Glad to see a full indepth analysis from Jomboy about this thing because the videos all made it out to make Profar into jerk for arguing back against irate Manny Machado. Now we know all those videos uploaded last night after the play was seriously flawed. Thanks Jomboy for pointing the whole situation correctly.
Left fielder myself...playing a ball hit off the wall, and with a speedy runner like Rojas, you immediately turn and look for third. If the cutoff man isn't there, you air it out to 3rd base. You don't have time to orchestrate the infielders. Profar turned a double into a triple. Great base running though!!!
I'd hardly say Profar is a young guy--he's been in the league almost 10 years lol. But huge of him to take blame 100% even though he had the right idea as soon as he fielded the ball off the wall
There's a bit on the Compound this week where Zack and Ian talk about how hard it is knowing where to throw and when to go for the out. Feels relevant here.
In this situation, it is irrelevant as to where the shortstop is positioned. If Profar did indeed decide to throw to second to try to get the runner, he wouldnt use a cut off. The SS was out of position.
Love Profar, and especially love the leaders leading, obviously the situation isn’t fun, especially cuz it would’ve been a very different game if that run didn’t score, but overall a good teaching/learning moment
i respect the in depth take on this compared to the knee jerk reaction the rest of media had on it blowing it way out of proportion and calling machado a bad leader. his leadership style is just not what is commonly expected. tough love like you said and i really like how you included the footage of them laughing it off after. shows the respect they have for each other.
Because with Hosmer gone, he’s the only guy on the team with an actual ring so he knows what it’s like to be on a winning team and what it took to take down juggernauts including both the 19 dodgers and 19 Astros
What a great breakdown, I don't think I've ever seen someone capture what it's like to truly be part of a competitive team and break it down like that. If anyone ever wonders why kids should do teamsports, here you go. Guy makes a mistake, probably puts some of the blame on the out of position teammate... Gets humbled by his teammates. Accepts all the blame, won't make the mistake again, grew as a player and probably as a person. And then everyone is cool and friendly again.
Fans endure a lot. But we always stick with it. What actually only a few hair roots can set off for a huge avalanche. Astonishing.... Plus your season in general. Slogan: persevere!
Ok.... Just not fun to be a Blue Jay. Kicked out of the nest by a little bird... and such. I suppress the last few days. We should ask the Yankees too. (better not Boone) Support group required!
The thing was that he was already planning to throw it to the cutoff man when the ball went passed him. He’s looking for the cutoff as soon as he turns around. Once he saw the cutoff behind the runner, if he threw it, the runner would’ve advanced anyway. He could’ve still just threw it in the direction of third base and that would halted the runner but I see where the mistake came from.
Is that the same Profar that used to be a MIF? How new is he to the outfield? On a side note, Musgrove must be the most jacked pitcher to only throw low 90s
Does anyone recall an outfielder overtly taunting or daring a runner in a manner similar? There's plenty of subtle gamesmanship stuff that goes on for sure... I don't believe he was challenging the runner here.
Same play happened to me last night, but in RF lol. Single close to the line, I pick the ball up and when I looked up there was no cutoff man, nobody waving their arms. The 1st baseman was just standing on his base, I ended up throwing to him after hesitating and a run scored on that play... I thought it was the 1st baseman's job to catch a relay from RF on a ball hit behind him with a play at the plate developping. Apparently the cutoff is always the 2nd baseman
@@therealjollification I knew it! I talked to him, my coach and my teammate in left field and they were all saying "the 1st baseman is never a cutoff man". Thanks man
Don't think the SS did anything wrong here. Depending on how the ball bounces off the wall, there might have been a play at 2nd. He has to commit at some point.

Amen. If you’re gonna confront a teammate do it in the tunnel. Now we got everyone and their mom making something out of what’s not there.
Sometimes tough love is good. He's young, he has been on the time quite a while despite his age and it shows he's one of the guys. If he were not they wouldn't even bother because he would be gone and demoted by then. Good job on Soto but I think it's okay what Machado and Musgrove did. They are the elderly and Profar has to listen.
Nah screw that. You need someone like machado to be confrontational. These players get paid millions. Everyone has gotten soft these days.
@@deir712 he’s literally almost 30
@@juanortiz453 yup, Machado is the Captain.
I hate the Padres as a dodgers fan, however I have only seen the first part of this from the media. Absolutely did not see manny Machado clear the air and try to make profar feel better. Just shows how much sports media loves to make drama where there isn't. Appreciate you doing the deep dive
That's why the Dodgers are so good because they have been working together for years
Profar is for sure my favorite Padres player, and I’m a Dodger
He’s just so humble, how can you dislike this guy?

As long as 3b was covering the bag, throw it in. Heck even if no ones there get the ball in!
Lots of respect for how Profar handled the situation. Really awesome to see and makes me like him even more.
Watching a team work together holding each other accountable without being a$$holes to each is refreshing.
They were being assholes
The coverage of this was perfect. I had a different perspective when the news first leaked. It was a mistake, mistakes happen. It won't happen again. The team did a great job of showing composure and understanding. This is a good team that demands the best but also picks each other up when they're down.
leaked? lol
There's obviously a time and a place for everything but in such a hard nosed sport this is a breath of fresh air
So used to seeing Profar smiling so I’m glad Manny came over to talk to him again.
Jomboy, you are THE BEST sports commentary happening. i appreciate so much the things about sport that you care about. Many thanks.

Yeah man I always kinda hated watching baseball but after watching jomboy videos I've really started watching this season. My favorite thing to do now is identify the pitch after it's thrown
Manny booted a ball and let the left fielder get the ball when they played the Dodgers last week. He's the last person to give advice.
Exactly
Thanks as always for the breakdowns. Always love the parts of baseball that you choose to breakdown. Keep’em coming my man!
I never thought of that, love the breakdowns man
This is channel is quickly becoming one of my favorite channels to watch. You do a great job at breaking down the small ball and putting a different perspective on the game that sometimes you just miss. Great job Jomboy
Profar is the man, helped lead the A’s to the playoffs a few years back
Jimmy is the GOAT for videos like this. It takes such an advanced understanding of fielding and such awareness to see it (often off camera). I got back into loving baseball because of videos like this.
Thank you for the breakdown. I though Profar was egging dude on "come on man go to third" kinda thing. I didn't notice Kim was not positioned correctly. I'm not as mad at Profar but still pissed guy just didn't yeet the ball to third 1 second earlier
My first big league game Profar walked it off over right field in Arlington! Love this guy!
Respect to Profar for recognizing he made a mistake and taking responsibility. Good teammate right there

Where is the Alex Cora ejection breakdown where he barely said anything
How many games are played every day? He'll get to it.
Waiting on that myself.
@@higgy82 Ik but this happened a few days ago the Cora ejection happened a few weeks ago
Players knew exactly what Profar was doing, as soon as he did it. But yeah, the breakdown is great for the fans of the game...
Manny "Not Johnny Hustle" Machado giving anyone a lecture is always hilarious.
Talk To Em!
yea cuz he admit it was his fault and that hustle has always been his greatest flaw- plus he is playing MVP level slugging this year. and if you watched the Padres you’d know he’s the team leader anyhow. he knows better than anyone
Man I miss being in the dugout obviously not on this level but in high school it was some of the funniest shit it’s a little different than this because they are 1 the best of the best but 2 on the con side we grew up together and faced people we grew up with on the other side
I'm proud of the Padres for handling that well. They're going through some adversity, and glad to see them growing and bonding together.
What's really comforting to me about this as a Padres fan, is how differently this went from the Tatis/Machado thing late in the season last year. Even though they're not playing up to their potential right now, it shows that the vibe in the clubhouse is definitely better than last season.
Nice to see The Big Chill is still on an MLB roster. Man I had high hopes for him.
Look at Soto so inspirational man
Your breakdowns are needed saw this earlier and thought he was telling him to try and run
You are really good at breaking down and finding these gems.
Interesting that Profar has played almost 200 more games than Soto and is several years older, yet Soto is the one taking Profar under his wing
Profar is also mostly an IF at 2b until 2021 while Soto is an all-star OF since the beginning so it does make sense I think
@@TOMPADDLE Good point. However, I wouldn't say Soto is an all star outfielder due to his defense
@@jtcox312 His defense has improved though.
profar is a good dude. remember him from his time in Oakland. keeps his composure
After seeing the play this makes way more sense. I thought we was challenging Rojas and it didn’t go well😂
I saw this moment posted on another channel (not gonna name names) and it was just Machado and Musgrove gettin on Profar.
I was pretty much thinning the same thing, if the ball had bounced straight up to Profar it might have been close at second
@Zatoiichii agreed, Kim effed up, again.
@@abe1142 Great minds (and names) think alike
@Zatoiichii No, I am analyzing the play instead of being sheep and going with what Jomboy thought of it.
The only way that play is close is if Profar throws straight to second. I was always taught gaps and wall bangs are automatic doubles and to cut third. I think it was a mental mistake of Kim’s.
Good for him to take the feedback and learn from it, and good on the team for communicating it the right way. That's how you work as a team, boys!
Machado was on third.
I'm glad Soto spoke to him the right way and more importantly showed Machado how a real leader handles situations!
Machado really gonna talk after he screws up a ground ball and lets 2 guys get an extra base. (Not same game) but still.
I was waiting for this breakdown! Thanks JomBoy!
Jomboy the King of Good Takes. I also thought he was challenging the runner at first, good explanation.
Great breakdown as always. Also, love to see my boy @Sammylev getting some love
Soto has been on the team for 5 minutes and is already a better leader than Machado.

Good leadership for all parties awesome also awesome for profar to listen have humility we’re all in this together
I'd hardly say Profar is a young guy--he's been in the league almost 10 years lol. But huge of him to take blame 100% even though he had the right idea as soon as he fielded the ball off the wall
Just commented something similar. Its pretty belittling to say the 23 yo soto took him under his wing.
@@economicsjingle Yeah
Thought he was challenging the runner too! Thanks for clearing that up 👍🏽
There's a bit on the Compound this week where Zack and Ian talk about how hard it is knowing where to throw and when to go for the out. Feels relevant here.
In this situation, it is irrelevant as to where the shortstop is positioned. If Profar did indeed decide to throw to second to try to get the runner, he wouldnt use a cut off. The SS was out of position.
Great breakdown! These moments between teammates are what make great teams.
With the play like that there's no time for mental errors and mental mistake especially when you are in the Wild Card hunt.
Love Profar, and especially love the leaders leading, obviously the situation isn’t fun, especially cuz it would’ve been a very different game if that run didn’t score, but overall a good teaching/learning moment
I wonder if there is the same response to Profar as there is to Tatis with his anabolic ring worm medicine?
i respect the in depth take on this compared to the knee jerk reaction the rest of media had on it blowing it way out of proportion and calling machado a bad leader. his leadership style is just not what is commonly expected. tough love like you said and i really like how you included the footage of them laughing it off after. shows the respect they have for each other.
how is soto so mature despite being 10 years old
Because with Hosmer gone, he’s the only guy on the team with an actual ring so he knows what it’s like to be on a winning team and what it took to take down juggernauts including both the 19 dodgers and 19 Astros
The way jomboy explained this makes so much sense. I really appreciate all the insights. Excellent work
What a great breakdown, I don't think I've ever seen someone capture what it's like to truly be part of a competitive team and break it down like that.

Great review! Thank you for emphasizing the bit about the cutoff man cuz the announcers have created way more chatter than necessary on this one.
Does anyone recall an outfielder overtly taunting or daring a runner in a manner similar? There's plenty of subtle gamesmanship stuff that goes on for sure... I don't believe he was challenging the runner here.
That's what happens when people have true respect for one another. No egos, just listening. Nice thing to see!
Machado is last to talk about throwing in and hustling 😂

I love this story. Great growth here.
“Young guy learning the outfield”
Profar, who made his mlb debut in 2012
Same play happened to me last night, but in RF lol.
That is the 1st baseman's cutoff, the only reason 2nd base might be cutoff here is if the runner is going to score no matter what.
@@therealjollification I knew it! I talked to him, my coach and my teammate in left field and they were all saying "the 1st baseman is never a cutoff man".

Damn Jimmy, last Padres breakdown you mentioned Profar as "the Left Fielder". And how the tides have turned.
I like the freeze frame at 3:38 where Manny is just staring directly into the camera
