I came back to san francisco and realized my parents had it 10x harder than me with ZERO internet help and raised three kids. they did a damn good job and they were much braver than I . mad respect to all immigrant parents

That was my late mother's favorite soup. No seafood though. We would grow our own, propping melons up on upside down milk crates. After harvest we'd peel and cut up, pack in bags and freeze. When I was growing up, we would go to banquets in Chinatown and this soup was served frequently. You haven't lived till you've been thru one of those 12 course meals. Your dad is great and watching your folks reminds me of my parents.

Winter melon soup (the thin broth version) is my favorite too. Like your mom, winter melon reminds me of my (fraternal) grandmother and my mom as well. My grandma used to grow them in her yard and spend hours boiling and watching the pot to making us her special soup. I love that you included the clip of the Toisan village. I’ve always imagined what my mom would describe about the house, and how they would cook. My family is from there as well and I would love to see more. I discovered your channel about a week ago and I’ve been hooked. I share them with my dad as well. Your videos are well made and the conversations around the dinner table is so personal and brings me such joy. I admire the research and time it takes for the production value of each video. Thank you for sharing these recipes. My grandparents are also from Toisan. These are dishes that I grew up on. Unfortunately these dishes will disappear in future generations as our kids assimilate more into western society so it’s great that you are keeping these recipes alive on record😊

I'm 3rd gen Hakka. My great-grandfather came from Guangdong in 1903 to Honolulu where my grandmother was born; with all the different ethnicities in Hawai`i, I'm double hapa (Chinese, Portuguese, and Translucent).
Many of you dishes are familiar that my grandmother and mother cooked. My mom died before I could get enough of the recipes but there are 1st cousins who still cook.
Your dad is my surrogate uncle to teach me southern Chinese cooking.

Nay ho ma? My name is Rob and I just want to say, I love your dad and mom! My parents were from Tosain Villiage too. Your parents remind me so much of my own!! (They passed away awhile back.) The food your dad cooks remind me of my dad's cooking which I miss dearly. Thanks to your dad I can re-create them and enjoy the memories. I know your parents speak cantonese, but do they speak Tosain? My parents spoke only Tosain. Hardly any English. I have saved all your dad's cooking episodes! I hope many more to come. I wish you and your family good fortunes and health!!

My first memory of winter melon was a guy on a motor scooter selling it off the back of his rear "trunk" by the slice on a scale in the wet market in Hong Kong. He was wearing a tank top and a scooter helmet, with a big cleaver, chopping one slice at a time usually to the exact weight you ordered. Fun time.

Your comments about the health benefits of the melon remind me of my Persian mom's comments about "hot" and "cold" effects of foods on the body. Melons were definitely cooling foods, and would balance the effects of hot foods like nuts. She would also say that eating too many hot type foods would contribute to zits! Cool that similar philosophies exist in so many cultures.

Great videos!! I really enjoyed your dad's demonstrations/explanations and how your family talks about the past while enjoying the food. Love the mix of canto and english in the videos..its like how my family conversations are.
Possible to share recipes/videos on Cantonese slow-cooked soup "lo foh tong" (老火湯) that are usually just made at home (with the chinese herbs 药材)? As a 1st generation ABC myself, I feel like these soup recipes may become lost over time..and we usually won't find these soups on restaurant menus. When I went away for college, I had missed my mom's soup the most.

Try thee soup with some added Chinese dried scallop or fresh scallop. Try steaming it for few hours with the inside filled with your favorite meats and fill it with chicken stock. You must remove the seeds. Adding dried scallops makes it taste amazing.

Hi Randy! Daddy Lau scores another great recipe. My mom used to grow her own winter melon in her garden as well. This recipe looks so good- I’m going to make it for my grandkids! What other veggies do your parents grow. My mom grew green beans, ong choy, bak choy, Chinese long beans, eggplants, chili peppers- anything that would feed us. Loved seeing Cam tasting the soup!

Off the top of my head I know he's growing sweet potato greens, peppers, tomato and oranges. I think we'll want to do a garden tour at some point on the channel! Can't wait for you to make this for your grandkids. We hope they love it!

My favorite soup to order in a restaurant! Thank you for the recipe! Plain wintermelon soup with nothing added is also one of the most comforting and healing soups to drink. Note to self: buy more cornstarch! Ever since I started making Daddy Lau's recipes, I have been using a lot more corn starch and less flour for cooking and I love it.
