Hi, there is sort of a version 2 out - UV-18 Pro Max. Has GPS also. Keypad and PTT is black. I enjoy mine and like it. Has 350-390 and 109-135.995 receive also.
This is the same radio, the only difference is that here the GPS module was not populated (but has the footprint on the motherboard). You can tell it's the same radio because the display is dark and has the bold italic font. Other radios go by the same name but are completely different, they can have a light blue display or a dark one that doesn't use the bold italic font
I have a UV-18 and was talking on a local repeater today. It worked very well. The receiver sounded as good as my base station except for the small speaker size, and I was getting into the repeater (that was on a mountain 20 miles away) in a solid manner. So much better than my UV-5, but not as good as my Yaesu FT3D. But the UV-18 is almost 1/10 the price of the Yaesu, so I’m very happy with my purchase. A radio I can take to places that I don’t worry about getting it back home! The FT3D is a much better radio, but maybe not ten times better? The UV-18 will replace the UV-5. I just wish it could be programmed in Chirp! I’m using the factory CPM and have it on a cheap Windows laptop that is on my guest WiFi network and has no connection to my other computers or accounts.
If your radio has the dark display with a bold italic font, you can use Chirp to program it, you need to select the UV-17 with GPS, even if your radio doesn't come with GPS
We still love you Sean, I hope to meet you one day & I owe you a coffee, Bro. (ps I'm like twice your age, but I still think you're One Cool Dude and a Smooth Talker). See you the next time you are out my way here in Southern Oregon ( in Klamath Falls)
I went outside today to use the UV-18H in bright sunlight. And boy was I surprised. I couldn't see the display at all. As this is the place the handheld is normally used, this is a real problem with this model and also the UV-17. I used my body as shade and even then I could see it some of the time, but not all the time. I would think that the designers would think of this. So my rating of the radio goes way down to almost unusable.
I'm going to see if I can reach out to a contact (I did once to see if another radio was a legit radio) and see if there is firmware which may be upgradable. My thought is maybe a different themes menu which would allow the use to chose the theme they would like for more or less contrast. (white background for example). I can see where this would be a major annoyance. I still say for 35.00, I am happy, but I realize others who have different uses, will not be able to use it. thanks for the input!
@@HAMRADIODUDE Thanks for looking into that! Maybe here is an easy answer. It is a great radio for the price, but finding a shade tree every time yo want to change a channel is a little over the top. Lou, N4LOU
I will give it a 1.5 shits. Almost all of the seem to lack good receiver quieting, but that could just be the distance from the repeater. Great series 73
I'm sure partially it has to do with the distance, being indoors, and the lighting surrounding me. However, that's usually a fairly difficult repeater to hear outdoors away from those factors. I have a plan in the future, I think
@HAMRADIODUDE He is correct in that most of the cheap radios seem more sensitive than bigger names because they a "radio on chip" IC and forego the pricey capacitors, inductors and logic to reject off frequency bleed, or harmonics or just plain blow up not being able to "desense" in a hot rf location. Both the Yaesu and Baofeng, TYT, Quansheng, TID etc use that architecture. But Yaesu kept the REQUIRED selectivity and filtering for transcieving in both bands. Boom, $85 for a YaeFeng FT 4XR or $99 FT-65 with discrimination and 3 years warranty. Ive seen sales at $60 Ive been really impressed by the Baofeng UV6 pro as Jim tested. I think it might be better designed.
I prefer the "slanted" numerals similar to a yaesu on this radio, however it does appear that radios ive seen with the same model number have a totaly different display more like what you find on the recent baofengs and others.
I like the large color screen, Chef saying "Frequency Mode" (versus some 10 year old, chinese girl! 👩🏫), the decent reception and sound, & the fact its

You can tell it's the same radio because the display is dark and has the bold italic font. I like it. Maybe if it comes to a US distributor, I’ll buy one to play with. I’m mostly hoping that TYT will update the UV390 / UV380 soon, and the UV88 while they’re at it. Those are my favorite Chinese radios still, but they could all benefit from air band receive and a USB-C charge capability.
With cheap Chinese HT's I find that harmonic testing of a particular model doesn't mean much. My test results using a high end Anritsu analyzer indicate that the harmonic content from these HT's has to be tested on each radio to determine if they meet spec. I have 2 identical Anysecu labeled HTs purchased together. 1 passed the harmonic content test, but the other did not, so I just use it as a cheap receive scanner.
I'd agree with that. A good demonstration, probably on any analyzer, would be to have a handful of the same model handy talkies. My best bet would be to get them all from the same batch and test them. Then buy a handful from multiple online sources and test them. I'd be curious if the quality control issue is per radio, per batch or per seller.
