This song recalls a sad time in Samoan history when lepers were sent away from their family to the leper colony on the island of Makogai in Fiji. It is a lament and the way it is sung here by Audrey English really does justice to the feelings of those who were sent away; some never to see their families again.

Audrey with her lovely toned voice, sung this hauntingly beautiful rendition with passion. As a halfcaste Samoan, who grew up in Suva, Fiji, not speaking Samoan was hard. Then after a whirlwind romance I married a Samoan Student at 18, and that was even more harder. I came to Samoa not knowing a word of Samoan, but after a few years, I'd like to say I am now fluent, and I have never looked back. I learnt to sing this song at the age of 20 with the famous Ueta Solomona, and got to sing it at many Samoan gatherings and most of our family getogethers. My Grandma told me all the sad stories about the Leprosy Epidemic and where the Lepers were taken in Fiji. The song became very special to me. According to my Grandma this song was written and composed by someone very close to our family. I love singing most of the old songs when I'm with close friends and enjoying a glass of wine. You will never tire of the old beautiful songs of Samoa.
Audrey, thank you so much for singing my grandfathers song so beautifully. Not many people are aware that a handsome young man from Afega wrote and composed this song to a lost love who left Samoa. There a many hidden messages in his song because at the time it was a secret and forbidden love. Our family honours Pa by singing or performing his song through dance whenever we have a family wedding. Thank you from the bottom of my heart X
Every time I hear this song...Its such a haunting melody, a longing for a lost loved... now i know... thank you for sharing the story behind the song. Bless you.
@@FLRMLTJLSLL23 And you're not wrong, A friend of Pa asked him to use his brother's name in his song, it was a good idea and it seems like it was about that. His lost love was said to have been a Samoan nurse in Fiji and it was woven into the song. Thanks for the comment x
Malo lava, Audrey. Beautiful rendition. You reduced me to tears because it took me back to my Samoan roots even though I don't speak Samoan and grew up in New Zealand speaking English. I guess the "Fa'a Samoa" is instilled in all of us no matter where and how we grew up. Big hug!
This song "Le Manu Tagi E" were usually sung by our parents as lallabys be 4 bed, but it is a "heartbreaking" story of those love ones sent away to a remote island in Fiji, because of lebrosy. Whoever wrote this song, deserves a medal or an award of some sort. You are a champion composer, songwriter in your own rights.
lovet-The story of life is quicker than the wink of an eye, the story of love is hello and goodbye...until we meet again.God bless well sung beautifully
Oh wow. Was totally in my feelings the whole time. You sang this song so well, your voice is pure and beautiful...it has a nostalgic tone to it, and it really makes you unique. I subscribed, because i dont wanna miss anything you put out. Youre so talented Audrey, keep it up! Much Alofas
Never forget your roots such a beautiful rendition. Got that jazzy and soulful feel to an old Samoan pese (song) your video is going viral on social media here in New Zealand. Faafetai lava
Every time I hear you sing this it makes me cry 😭 I feel the emotions I didn’t know I had for how hard times must’ve been for our parents that grew up in the islands and how hard their parents worked to provide in a underdeveloped country & still be able to send them to countries like nz so that they may be able to live a better life & their grandkids us can have opportunities that knew didn’t exist back in the islands
Beautiful song! Could you please insert the lyrics in the description please? I am a teacher's aide and one of the students I support suggested for me to listen to this song. Glad he did :) Thank you

Hello Audrey, my newest favorite singer..your voice is so soothing and mesmerizing it's a lullaby. It's like sitting on the beach with your loved 1 sipping on your favorite drink while watching the waves as they gently rippled in the moonlight with your feet partially submerged in the wet sand. Your soulful rendition of this poignant and heartfelt song is captivating..fa'afetai Tele lava mo lou si'ufofoga malie ia fa'amanuia le Atua ia te oe. Tofa
I love this song. Was the last song on a CD of Samoan music I got (and loved), really special. What does the title mean? Someone said either "blessed is the dove" or "blessed is the tooth-billed pigeon" I myself did a cover of it (as a Palagi, it's nowhere near as good, fair warning!)
Absolutely astonishing❤❤. Just a suggestion, because your voice is soft, smooth and soothing, maybe you could do a cover of blackbird by the Beatles. I think it would be perfect but it was just a suggestion that's all. Anyways, you keep up the great worl and keep producing amazing content, and I absolutely adore your worl. Alofa atu❤❤
