Gotta admit, this game is what got me into writing. Now I ow it a lot, and this analysis just made me remember once again the love I have for it. Got lucky since I got my hands in the collector's edition, which includes additional material, and even the book called The Alan Wake Files (I am translating the title because I got the Spanish version of it. Great translation work done to it by the way). Anyways, thank you for making such beautiful video. Greetings from México.

1:33:00 i think the best way to think of this section, and really, the whole game, is through Frued's Ego, Super Ego, and Id. Alan Wake (the writer) being his Super Ego, Alan Wake (the dark presence) being his Id, and Alan Wake (the player) being his Ego. Alan Wake the Writer is this super famous, always in the spotlight character who always leading to a glut of attention. Alan Wake the Dark Presence is this twisted, tormented, subconscious version of himself that comes out in the writing of the events of the story. Alan Wake the Player is the rational, logical, and is always grounded to the reality of the situation, which is seen most prominently in this DLC.

I am so deeply in love with this game and with your video retrospective/analysis. Thank you so much for this...
Alan Wake, to me, is a beautiful game that can be taken as is, with little to no interpretation outside of the literal experiences of our "helpless" and often frightened protagonist. But I also see it as the struggle for creative expression and how we as flawed human beings try to build on something beautiful but are filled with insecurities. The only way we could possibly make sense of our journey is by using the mundane and familiar to become the supernatural. A child uses a stick on the ground and it becomes a sword, a gun, a pen, a conductor's baton... Alan uses a flashlight to fend off his enemies.
Thank you so much for this. It is a comfort to me.

Amazing, I was playing Alan Wake remastered for a few weeks now. I was raving about a lot of things that I didn't like but now a lot of the development problems makes sense. I saw the playstation showcase and was suuuuper excited but ultimately thought 13 years of cold silence was unacceptable. This video showed me there was no cold silence and that I simply wasnt in the loop. I'm going to play Control now.

great video. very much hoping to see you cover Control at some point. the connections between the two are so interesting, especially the parallels between the clicker and the light switch cord, and its adherence to the rule of three as seen in American Nightmare, as well as the parallel between Alan Wake's shoe box, and the shoe box used in Casper Darling's interdimensional research.

Alan Wake has one of my favourite moments of storytelling: the song "Poet and the Muse". A song - created by a real band knowing the meaning of the song but acting as a band in a video game that wrote that song without understanding its actual meaning - that tells the story of what happened once and happened again but also tells you what you have to do.... but you won't understand that until you're actually in the situation the song describes. Absolutely fantastic

Poet & the Muse is sung by Poets of the Fall, the real life version of Old Gods of Asgard. It's the same band, just under different names in different universes. Poet & the Muse is one of my absolute favourite songs of theirs, & stands so well alone even without the context of the video game as do most of Poets of the Fall's & Old Gods of Asgard's songs

As to the "what is Lynchian?" question, I'm no expert or anything, but in my opinion, it's using Lynch's unique method of using characters or places or things to represent abstract ideas.
For example, Dale Cooper representing the benevolent viewers who want to get lost in a mystery while trying to solve a murder. He even uses colors to represent concepts like truth and secrecy. That, to me, encapsulates what Lynchian is and even though he's probably not the first to use such methods, he does so consistently and fearlessly in all his works.

I loved that they used 'Space Oddity'. It makes me wonder if they will use 'The Man Who Sold The World' in Alan Wake 2. Since it's David Bowie's follow-up to Space Oddity that would be amazing! I always think of that song when I see the first Alan Wake scene in AWE, it's totally fitting, as is one of the inspirations for the lyrics- the poem 'Antigonish', by William Hughes Mearns. Good Stuff 👍

"Some days you wake up with a flashlight. Sometimes, you don't." What a powerful summation of what it's like to have illusive confidence in your own work. Sometimes, your own imagination consumes you as a dark forest would an animal. Your own creation, rebelling against its creator by making itself out as foreign; its familiar features, warped by shadows. Some days, that's just the way it's going to be and all you can do is keep calm in the darkness, making little to no progress but then there are the other days. The ones where you're blessed by some invisible muse and you flip on the light, only to recognise that you were at home, all along. Thank you for another enlightening video, son. I'm proud of you.

This was FANTASTIC! God, really just fleshed out my already massive love for this franchise. You did an amazing job covering as much bonus material you could find, but I'd like to know if you've since become aware of "This House of Dreams", a fictional blog written by a woman who finds some of Thomas Zane's old stuff. The cool part? She's found them just after having moved to a town called Ordinary, the same one referenced (in a creepy reversed audio clip) in the song "Balance Slays the Demon" from Alan Wake's American Nightmare. I think this was, at the time, Remedy planting the seeds for a sequel but whether or not they will pull from or even acknowledge all this bonus material is yet to be seen but in a world where the lines between fiction, reality, canon, and non-canon are blurred I don't see why not.
And off I go to watch the following videos on Quantum Break and Control.

After watching through almost to the end, I want to point out two other pieces of (somewhat) bonus material: the novelization, and the official strategy guide. I have both, but I’ve yet to read through them; I have heard from other RUclips videos, however, that the strategy guide actually contains some lore tidbits that aren’t present anywhere else. I specifically remember that there’s some info about Alan’s mother; again, I haven’t read through it or the novelization, but it’s possible there are a few other pieces to the Wake puzzle hiding in the pages of those two works as well.

Just finished replaying (well, technically my first playthrough of the "Remastered" edition) Alan Wake again. Gosh, this game is still just wonderful. The story is phenomenal. The combat was frustrating at times, though not as much as I remembered. Most likely because I opted to play it on PC this time (mouse and keyboard definitely felt better!). I immediately followed it up with my first every playthrough of American Nightmare, and MAN, I was shocked at how good that felt in comparison! The combat, while similar, just felt soooo much smoother, and the dodge mechanic seemed to work to a much greater degree. Now, onto Alan Wake 2!

    You just keep getting better!

Hey there. I'm at the part where you talk about "maybe the player is the Dark Presence" and I'm not sure myself, but I think Barbara has a "4th Wall Moment" where she looks at the camera and says "You!"
Not sure if this helps or harms that idea, since I thought Barbara was the Dark Presence herself, or at least its "mask", so if we, the players, are the DP, then why did she "look" at us and say what she said?
Not sure; it's been a literal decade since last I played this.
    Great video!

I don't remember how this game came into my life exactly. I just remembered wanting Red Dead Redemption, but I got Alan Wake. I was blown away at the time despite an initial disappointment and immediate buyers remorse. I still haven't played RDR or RDR 2, so I have no idea what I missed out on. I like to keep it that way.

Up Jumped the Devil is such a good song! Thank you Remedy for showing me Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. They have a version of Black Betty that is just amazing!

Son, I used to be a Sony fanboy. I know, it was a dark time in a misspent youth. But even in the most feverish moments of utterly subjective fanaticism, Alan Wake stood out as the 1 game I wished PS3 had.
Thanks for this video, you make your pops proud.

Marko Saaresto of Poets of the Fall actually modeled as Vladimir Llem in the first Max Payne.
So he was collaborating with Sam Lake before writing Late Goodbye for MP 2.

Alan Wake is fantastic. I greatly enjoy the linked worlds Remedy has created between Alan Wake and another amazing game of theirs, Control. Both are two of my favorite gamed. Alan Wake 2 comes out this year and Control 2 is yet TBA, but I definitely am looking forward to both games. Remedy's story telling is deep and provocative. They make you think and truly contemplate the tales they weave. While their gameplay started out a bit rough around the edges, every game shows improvement upon their last and this gives me great hope for even better to come. I have not finished Chorvs yet, as I keep playing Control, but it's next on my list.
Thank you for your indepth look into Alan Wake. Your videos are very well done and I appreciate ya.
P.S. as a man in his 50's I'm certainly old enough to be your dad 😂 possibly even grandad. God bless you son.

I love the game but my only problem is having to play nightmare to get more manuscripts and more story/clues. I chronic hand pain so I sadly can't play on hard difficulty's. I am however grateful for videos like this that covers everything I missed. Thank You Son

Mr Scratch does appear at the end of episode 6, not just the DLC
Also Barry isn't the manager of Old Gods instead of Alan because it's some alternative timeline, he is their manager after Alan disappeard, the events of the main game happened and are referenced by the characters, the town in Arizona is a real town but it's blending with the fictional town of Night Springs, Alan comments on it, that the dark place is blending with a real town and changes even the people in it

Since control recontextualised Alan Wake and brought it into a shared universe I enjoy it much more. The story makes more sense as well. Control was the first game ive finished in years, and the Alan Wake lore was one of the reasons I did.

Found your channel recently and loving the long-form content. You might have mentioned this somewhere else already, I wanted to say that Marko Saaresto actually 'appeared' in Max Payne 1 as the model for Vladimir Lem in the graphic novel sections.

Fun fact about the Bright Falls show. The intro for each episode has items strewn about a forest. Each of these items are actually in the show in some way, so I always tried to look out for them. I feel it's about the main character actually in the process of turning into a Taken and sort of the viewpoint of a Taken, which I found interesting. I enjoyed it for what it was.

@@YourFavoriteSon1 Son, I'm so happy you made this episode. I love the series, and eat up anything I can find out about it. I actually didn't know about the comics so I'll definitely check those out. The AWE DLC for Control is something I have yet to play but plan to when I get more time.

It’s worth playing this game if only so people can experience the “Children of the Elder God” section.
