  • Pakistan is the world’s fifth largest democracy. It is also deeply influenced by Islamic law (Sharia). Can these two traditions, Western Liberal democracy and Sharia, co-exist? If so, how? And if not, what are the consequences? Haroon Ullah, foreign policy professor at Georgetown University, has some fascinating and sobering answers.

    Script:
    Can you name this country?
It is the fifth largest democracy in the world. It has nuclear weapons. And it's home to millions of religious extremists. It is both a leading fighter against and a major supporter of terrorism.
The answer, of course... is Pakistan.
Its unique makeup poses a question that should preoccupy everyone:
Can two diametrically opposed forms of society -- a free one and one based on religious Sharia Islamic law -- exist in one nation?
A very disturbing true story gives us a possible answer.
On January 4, 2011 Salman Taseer, the former governor of Punjab, the nation's most populous province, had lunch with a friend in Kohsar Market, an upscale international series of stores and restaurants. I lived only a few blocks away at the time.
Throughout his career, Taseer was outspoken in his belief that freedom, democracy, and pluralism were inseparable, and that all religious minorities, should be protected. Such ideas, however, are anathema to extremists. As a consequence, over the years, Taseer had received numerous personal death threats. I knew him. I interviewed him. I spent time with him. He showed extraordinary courage by refusing to be silenced.
After lunch, the governor left with his aides and his bodyguards and headed toward his car. A small crowd had gathered and Taseer waved to them as his driver opened up the rear door. Without warning, a member of Taseer's own security detail stepped forward and opened fire with a machine gun not more than ten feet away. Salman Taseer was struck with twenty-six rounds and he died where he fell.
This is how extremists deal with those whom they consider to be a threat -- they kill them. But our story doesn't end there.
When the assassin, Mumtaz Qadri, entered the criminal courtroom in Islamabad, he was met by cheering crowds who showered him with flowers. The cheering crowds believed that Taseer had deserved to die. To many Pakistanis, he had insulted Islam by advocating democracy and freedom for all Pakistanis, irrespective of their religious views, and by speaking out for the rights of women.
In the following weeks, Pakistan's Islamic parties led marches and demonstrations of upward of forty thousand people honoring Mumtaz Qadri, the assassin, and celebrating Taseer's death. What was even more disconcerting, was that Pakistan's moderate political leaders remained silent. They issued statements acknowledging Taseer's assassination, but not one stood up and decried the murder of this brave and honorable man. The trial was held and Qadri was found guilty of murder.
    But it gets worse.
After the verdict, there was an enormous uproar against the judge, who received so many death threats that the poor man had to go into hiding. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, pressure from extremist groups eventually forced the government to suspend the case indefinitely. In essence, the judge's decision was undone. And at Taseer's funeral, which I attended, organizers were unable to find a single religious leader to preside over the event. The extremists had sent a clear message: anyone who opposes them could be targeted for death anywhere, and at any time. Stories like this are not uncommon in Pakistan.

    • @dux5680
      @dux5680 7 лет назад +2

Yeah, that is unreasonable. I am not saying we shouldn't criticise, and there are people who get bitchy if anything is being said against their religion. The only remedy I think of is being rational.

    • @THATMOFODIRT

Questioning what I find insulting is now against the law and I demand your arrest for hate speech, incitement to racial and religious hatred. How dare you!!! Seem rational? Where does the offense stop?Slippery slope.
Rights don't stop with feelings. Thats why free speech is paramount in a free society. If it's not then that society is not free. The only remedy is to stand fast on that principle and not capitulate to progressive, politically correct nonsense.

Pakistan is full of Islam extremists so India has better amount of Hindu extremists, you speak as if Our country is a paradise for Muslims and Christians and other Minorities, There is no wonder, Most of you Indian Hindus Believe this way, Self Hypocrisy was never a realization that can/could/would occur to you people which is why stopping caste based reservations is more important than Stopping Hindu Caste System. If Americans and Europeans are as religious as we are, we Indians, Pakistanis and Buddhists would have never been able to build any Mosques or Temples. India-Pakistan conflict is not a thing because our Army has always been the powerful and will be, but the extreme ideologies among blind followers in both nations should change irrespective of any religion.
Pluralism and acceptance is still a hard thing in our country even after 60+ years of Independence. You speak as if you can easily judge a country but you think you could just ignore the biggest holes on freedom in our own country.

+karthik puvvula Any country which runs by her major religion ideology is not a democratic country by calling itself democratic it only fools the minorities in it and blindfolds the majority with pride while blindly thinking that entire world still believing its a "Democratic" country.

+susheel sundar Please don't mention India and Pakistan in one sentence when you are talking about religious extremism. India is still a secular democracy just because majority religion Hindus are open minded and allowed it to be. May sound harsh but true. Minorities have reservations, which means they are treated better than most of Hindus. They are politicians, film actors, sports and everywhere else. And yes, India treats minority religions better than any other country in the world. If this is not enough for you, then should Hindus give up their religion and surrender themselves to minorities? Will that satisfy you? Having said that, we still have faults, like you rightly mentioned caste system and a minor group of moderate extremists. I say moderate because there should be contrast between real and hardcore extremists like Pakistanis. Finally I suggest you find out how Pakistan treats its minorities, instead of complaining about not having beef in your cheese burger.

Please don't mention India and Pakistan in one sentence......
Your patriotism has blindfolded you but isn't it so when it comes to our country we always pompom about our culture and traditions and all the shit only looks better on outside?
You think i give a damn about mean ban, meat ban is silly but in a perspective BJP government is trying to adapt sharia law methodology, why should Muslims and Christians adjust their lifestyle for the sake of Hindus ? Would Hindus do the same thing?
Meat Ban maybe is silly but its barbaric use of law and order in "Democracy" therefore this only proves India is not actually a democratic country under BJP government and i clearly see you as a adamant bhakt.
Yes, Minorities are there in every line of work in India, but who are majority in every line of work in India, what kind of quality they have lead since independence ? what is the ratio of people who has most of the black money and who are the biggest corporates in India?
You know you feel that my plight is all about my cheese burger, but Jesus i don't even like cheese burger or beef, its about freedom and you believe being a Hindu or maybe being a Upper caste or blind OBC its really good for Minorities here, but you are not a Minority either....
Last but not the least. You believe that Pakistan is worse than India, but you should know that correlating Hindu extremists from India to pakistan, Indian Hindu extremists are more powerful and more in number, and for Hindu extremists Indian Hindu sympathetic support always comes in Support. Which is Worse. You will definitely disagree with me but really not a problem because you are not the first person or Indian who speak like this. you should ever try how actually minorities think about their status in India, than by assuming yourself, and bursting your chest to 56cm.
Nevertheless, India is no different from Pakistan when it comes to Religion extremism. whether you agree with me or not.

But sharia isn’t even “law” in the sense that we in the West understand it. And most devout Muslims who embrace sharia conceptually don’t think of it as a substitute for civil law. Sharia is not a book of statutes or judicial precedent imposed by a government, and it’s not a set of regulations adjudicated in court. Rather, it is a body of Koran-based guidance that points Muslims toward living an Islamic life. It doesn’t come from the state, and it doesn’t even come in one book or a single collection of rules. Sharia is divine and philosophical. The human interpretation of sharia is called “fiqh,” or Islamic rules of right action, created by individual scholars based on the Koran and hadith (stories of the prophet Muhammad’s life). Fiqh literally means “understanding” - and its many different schools of thought illustrate that scholars knew they didn’t speak for God.
Fiqh distinguishes between the spiritual value of an action (how God sees it) and the worldly value of that action (how it affects others). Fiqh rules might obligate a devout Muslim to pray, but it’s not the job of a Muslim ruler to enforce that obligation. Fiqh is not designed to help governments police morality in the way, say, Saudi Arabia does today. According to classical fiqh scholarship, a Muslim ruler’s task was to put forth another type of law, called siyasa, based on what best serves the public good. The most vivid example of this was the recognition of incestuous (mother-son, brother-sister) marriages practiced by some non-Muslim minorities living under Muslim rule, dating back at least to the 14th century, despite the abhorrence, generally, of such marriages to Islam.

Great video. I am from Pakistan and I remember the exact events leading up to the death of Salman Taseer. He was a brave and noble person. A succesful business tycoon with much of his wealth invested in business and educational ventures in the country. In this particular case, he was defending a poor middle-aged woman, an illiterate road sweeper, who had unknowingly burned some rubbish she had swept away at the side. In the rubbish were some pages from Quran or some other holy texts. The woman happened to be Christian and the religious extremists had accused her of burning these pages wilfully. They wanted to put the poor woman to death. Salman Taseer, as the governor , tried to pardon and release her. He had a tv interview just a week before the attack and it was clear that he was under a lot of pressure and stress. Yet he did not back down and stayed the death sentence from being carried out against the woman. Then he was killed.

    • @IShallNotSubmit
      @IShallNotSubmit 9 лет назад +1

His son who was trying to get justice for his father was abducted shortly after Taseer's death and has still not been found after 3 years. Presumably, the religious extremists are holding him hostage as a bargaining chip to get the killer released. The whole country is being held hostage by Islamist militants.

I appreciate the views in this video, and the courage of Haroon Ullah. However, he is wrong. Islam is vehemently anti-democratic and anti-human rights. So when the very platform of the society goes against democracy and freedom, then there will *always* be frictions, murder and mayhem, in that country, despite an alleged "moderate" Muslim majority.
Islam as a civilizational foundation has never, and never will support any kind of modern society. Kemal Atatürk tried in Turkey, but it only functioned half-ways as long as it was de facto a military dictatorship. As soon as enough semi-freedom were given, Turkey reverted towards Islam and thus anti-democracy/human rights.
And for those of you who believed that Islam needs a reformation, like Christianity. Luther, combined with the printing press, gave all Europeans access to a Bible, and in their own language and not Latin. This transformed Europe, not, as falsely claimed, a bunch of immoral atheist philosophers in France. This is a pure fabrication. The enlightenment was done by Christians, based on Christianity. It was never an atheist majority project, no matter what your Marxist college professor tells you.
We already have the reformation in Islam, where major parts of the Muslim world get access to their own religious primary sources, Qur'an, (Sahih) Hadeeths, tafsir, sira, etc. This has produced Salafism, Wahabaism, Da'esh (The Islamic state/Caliphate). As very few Muslims have really studied their own primary sources, these forces will catch on like wildfire. What we have seen from the Muslim world is just the beginning, and there will be no Muslim reformation to modernity and human rights. That is pure Utopia and a dangerous one.

      @proudinfidel111 9 лет назад +33

ahsan malik believe me, I know what Islam is. I read your primary sources, maybe you don't know what Islam is. Care to explain:
How Muslims are commanded in the Qur'an to follow the behaviour and actions of their false prophet Muhammad, al-Ahzab 33:21 - You people have always had an exemplar of the Messenger of Allah who displays a good quality as well as a magnificent attribute of a great master whose conduct induces imitation by the one in whose bosom hope springs eternal of Allah's mercy and of the bliss of the hereafter and applies remembrance to Allah often enough."
This is a huge problem, as Muhammad, by your own "holy" scriptures, were undoubtedly one of the most evil men in the recorded history of mankind. Isis is merely doing what the false "prophet" Muhammad did, al-Insan al-Kamil (اَلإِنْسَانِ الكَامِلْ) and the four "righteous Caliphs" (الخلفاء الراشدون) did.
One of the worlds largest and most popular Sunni Fatwa Banks, by Muslims and for Muslims, gives a good insight into what true Islam REALLY is.
Please explain how the following are peaceful and beautiful:
Muslims are commanded to conduct Jihad. Some of the reasons are humiliating the kuffar, war booty, and taking kuffar girls as war booty (sex-slaves)
      islamqa.info/en/34647
Enemy kuffar women (non Muslims) can be taken as war booty and used as sex slaves:
      islamqa.info/en/12562
Also married Muslim men are allowed to have kuffar (non-Muslim) girls as sex slaves
      islamqa.info/en/10382
It is not adultery or rape for a Muslim man to force his female kuffar (non-Muslim) war booty to sex.
      islamqa.info/en/20802
So in Islam it is OK to rape non-Muslims, Kuffar, but you can't take them as friends:
      islamqa.info/en/2179
Muslims can not be ruled by kuffar (non-Muslims). Islam is here to dominate, not to be dominated:
      islamqa.info/en/82681
It is haram (forbidden) for Muslims to honour kafir (non-Muslim) in any way. Including farewell parties:
      islamqa.info/en/32560
Greeting a kafir (non-Muslim) is haram (forbidden). The kafir must always greet a Muslim first:
      islamqa.info/en/48966
Lying to the kuffar (non-Muslims) is permissible in Islam:
      Arabic only: islamqa.info/ar/154955
There are no vast moderate Muslim majority in Muslim countries that adhere to the human rights in the West. Shown clearly here:

When men fight with one another, and the wife of the one draws near to rescue her husband from the hand of him who is beating him, and puts out her hand and seizes him by the private parts, then you shall cut off her hand. Deuteronomy 25:11-12
Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man intimately. But all the girls who have not known man intimately, spare for yourselves. Numbers 31:17-18
You may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. Pakistan is a graveyard for any religious minorities. (Christians Hindus or even some Muslim sects). It's very easy to file a charge of "insulting the prophet/islam" to someone from minority.
Just two days back one Christian girl got raped as she refused to recite Kalima(Islamic prayer to become a Muslim).
There were many incidents in past where girls from minority religion getting abducted raped or even murdered. Sometimes when they file case while the girl is missing there were times police and the judiciary compelling the parents of the victim to get her married to the rapist itself. (Tribal religion = tribal justice )
Unfortunately I have not seen media coverage om these issue.

Mr. Ullah, thank you for your testimony. Good luck, you are certainly going to need it.
I would only urge you not to be naive about the real numbers of knuckleheads in your country. A functioning pluralistic democracy can survive 10-15% of knuckleheads - look at the United States - unfortunately in Pakistan the ratio seems to be inverted. No democracy, no real democracy, can survive a 85% knuckleheads. From my point of view Pakistan has a very thin crust of democratic values, concentrated in a small upper class minority centered around Karachi and outside of Pakistan. Most Pakistanis, despite some education and technology are essentially the same tribal people they were a thousand years ago - witness the scenes you just described. Pluralistic democracy is not compatible with tribalism, in fact if you want to understand the evolution of pluralistic democracy in the West it is the history of the detribalizaiton of the West. No tribal people allow their tribe to become extinct willingly, it is where all of the effectiveness of their way of life comes from. The reform of Islamic society that some "moderates" anticipate, witness al-Sisi in Egypt, suppose the tribal/Islamic model can be preserved somehow - it cannot. It takes a huge leap of faith for a group of tribes to dissolve their own identity as a tribe in among their tribal enemies - or a big bloody war. Huge numbers of your people are going to die sorting this out, even as huge numbers of Europeans died sorting it out in the Thirty Years War and the various Wars of Religion.
    Good luck again.

You might call Pakistan a democracy, but its a false democracy since its the Military and Mullah's, the Islamic Cleric's who really control this Banana Republic, its ruled under Sharia Law which is counter to Democracy, a fragile Democracy at best, this is a nation where the Military is waiting to take control at any minute, if you look at Pakistan's history the Military has ruled for the majority of its history. Many Tribal area's are in chaos, such as Baluchistan, the Baluchistan people want to separate from Pakistan and should never have been part of Pakistan in the first place, during Pakistan's creation, Muhammed Ali Jinnah annexed Baluchistan and occupied that area making it part of Pakistan, time to free Baluchistan.
Pakistan is a chaotic nation more like a Jungle and nearly bankrupted, a true Banana Republic a name sake Democracy, the people truely dont have a voice and Sharia Law rules the roost so not a democracy at all. Sharia and Democracy dont mix, like water and oil.
Conclusion Pakistan is not a Democracy so stop calling it the 5th Largest Democracy in the World cause its not, there is no freedom of speech, Thought, press or anything, its the laws of Islam that rule Pakistani society, Pakistan is a false Democracy.

Many Pakistanis are against Mullahs like myself since they've clearly ruined our country! We are against theocracy since it just leads to more religious extremism. Many Pakistani women don't do hijab, there is no law that forces us to and women go to work, universities or other events without it like myself (at least that's how it's like in the much developed cities here. Such is not the case in remote areas). Yes we exist and we are growing in numbers.
