My dad has this exact same bike and every time I ride it I feel some awesome charisma about it, older bikes have a lot more soul compared to modern in my opinion
HEY! Late to the party here but those cranks looked like the FC-MC12 set! If they are, and you still have them in your possession, they're recalled because they break in half! Put them on a bike and take it to a shop that deals with Shimano, they have to give you a brand new set.
That's nice man- i'm in Melb and have probably resto'd 50 bikes. Its great fun. Maybe Citric Acid and hot water is a faster process for dissolving the rust...Otherwise awesome bro!!
The Pine Mountain is a total sleeper. with the right set up, that bike is everything but full suss. Who ran Alivio into XT? Nightmare! Really nice build and loved the 50-40 rings. that thing will fly.!!
Hahha yea! I was surprised with all the alivio parts too, the previous owner must of road super hard and broke a bunch of parts haha. One day I’ll get round to replacing they back hub!! 50-40 rings were already on the cranks when I got them, so yeah gunna def gunna FLY haha!!
Nice work, Gary. I like your vids. I definitely want to see a video of you walking through a reassembly of a shifter. I've attempted it before and threw out the shifter after it ended badly :(
Love the channel! Can you provide a video on vintage Deore derailleur and shifter adjustment? Trying to restore old MTB's myself but always seem to run into trouble when it comes to the shifting portion. Thank you!!!
That's a sweet bike! The color combo is perfect with me watching this days before Halloween too 😂 I just started getting back into bikes and found your channel recently. Good content so far man.👌
Nice video and build. It's always good to see the old Marins being worked on. For me, the main reason I watch bike build videos is to watch the detail of the work being done...and to hear it. No sound other than the narration, which was disappointing. I've seen a few videos where the speed is increased to get through the build in quick time, as if it's thought that we'd get bored watching in real time. However, it actually takes away a lot of the joy of watching the build. We're very fortunate in the UK as we have suppliers of retro decals if we want to replace damaged ones or respray the complete frame and apply a new set. I wonder if you have someone in your location. Original or at least period bottle cages would be my personal choice. Maybe a sharkfin chainstay protector could have been sourced from eBay or a black protector decal, instead of just wrapping electrical tape around the stay, which did the job but not a good finish. Great decision on the saddle! Moving the seatpost qr clamp lever to the correct side was a good decision too. You obviously weren't going for originality but you did leave the bike better than you found it, which is always a positive result 👍
Hey thanks for watching! Yeah I agree with the sound, most of the time I do all my work on the balcony and it’s quite windy so I just mute it. Also there is background noise of people speaking sometimes so I mute that too. If you watch some of my newer videos I have included more of the sound. With the length of the video If I let it play in the real time the video would be soooooo long and I would get boring in my opinion. Yea it’s harder to get decals in aus haha I know some people actually order from the UK. I did look for a shark fin, but it was too expensive for me unfortunately. Yeah I wasn’t trying to go for a period correct/museum piece, as I find having a ridable / functional bike important too!! Thanks for your comments and stay tuned for more vids 😊😊😊
That’s a good idea, I had thought about that too, just need to work out a durable clear coat so that it doesn’t scratch the paint when you put in/remove the bottle. Maybe in a future project!!
I owned a Brand new 1992 "Eldridge Grade" when i was a Teenager in the exactly same Red Tail/Red Stem Configuration. I fell so hard in Love with that Bike it was almost unbelieveable. Sadly It was stolen one Day. I never see it again. :(
@@garysprojects I did it. i get my Hands on a identical Bike like mine and bought it. It was an eBay Auction and in my Eyes it was a Steal. It is nearly in totaly Original Spec. The Saddle and the Rear Tyre are the only things are Changed. The Bike is 250km away from me and beggars cant be choosers on this rare Models these Days. On Sunday i pick it up.
@@garysprojects Trust me i would but i think 250km might be a little bit much. Otherside my Mondeo Wagon is driven so less this year - he would be happy to get his wheels on the Autobahn.
Usually you don't have to take apart the shifters nor freewheels. Just spray copious amounts of WD40 in any hole you can find near the rotating bits, shake them well. WD40 works as a solvent for old gunked up oil in there and frees them up. They ususally start working after a few applications and shakes. Then you spray or drip some oil in the same holes and cracks and away you go.
Hey man. Just went to my hardware store and couldn’t seem to drive the same hose material you used for the grips. All they had was foam pipe insulation. Was wondering if you had any more info on what you used. Would love to try it out
I picked up one of these frames recently. Doing a full strip an respray with new decals. Question - can you confirm the seat post size. I think it is either 26.6 or 26.4
You did a great job on that bike mate! You can get decals from a guy called Gil at retrodecals. Just google that and you'll find him. I've used his decals heaps of times and they are spot on ;)
Those are Shimano crankset FC-MC12, I think Shimano issued a recall in 1997 www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/1997/cpsc-shimano-announce-recall-of-bicycle-components I had the same crankset on a 1995 Marin Bobcat Trail.
@@garysprojects they told me on Twitter to ask a Shimano Repair Center, there were none in Brussels where I could go to, the others were in Flanders, but the one I contacted did not reply. So now the crankset went to friend.
Was gonna warn you of the same thing. A shop with a Shimano account can get a warranty replacement for you (includes new bb, crank, front der and chain) but they're not gonna be in stock for a few months.

Hi great bike! Just about to do a re spray on my Bear Valley se, got the decals from www.dnfive.co.uk/Bike-Decals/Marin/C2-54-1-0.htm if that helps you out?

Excellent, the richer orange is a great improvement and the bike now looks good as new, good for another thirty years !
Cheers Andy! I was happy with how the orange turned out too! Definitely good for a few more years!!
Great video so glad you did the headset in the end.
Cheers my dude! Ya I’m glad I did too because once the bike was built I wasn’t going to go back and do it haha
Very nice refurb buddy really enjoyed that one 👍👌🚵
Thank you my dude I appreciate that !
Looks great! I have a 2017 Marin Pine Mountain and its really great to see the original one get a new life!
Justin Beaumont thanks man, appreciate it! That’s awesome, Marin makes great bikes I reckon
Great job!

Such a clean build.. love these Marin’s
Thanks homie! Appreciate that 🤗
Proper respect for completely stripping the shifters down and cleaning.. it takes a brave man to do that.
Richard Reed hahah thanks dude! Brave or stupid 😂😂😂
Ikr, I just blast em with wd40 then blow em out with air compressor
That works too !
Stem cap works perfectly I think. Also the pedals in that bare state look amazing.
Thanks my dude! Appreciate it. Bare bear pedals 🐻 . I’m pretty stoked how they turned out, reminds me of classic mtb/bmx bear trap pedals
Remember when that generation of Marin came out. Wanted one like crazy but couldn't justify it. Still have the catalogue somewhere.
Ahhh yeah classic bike! Maybe you can find one, one day! 🤗
Way to go G........smooth restore with this oldie. Take care stay safe and healthy!!
