Amazing all. But, foremost, rediscovering Christine Schäfer's exquisite vocal art & voice, Mehta I knew & think the world about him.

    Didymus
    Streams of pleasure ever flowing,
    Fruits ambrosial ever growing,
    Golden thrones,
    Starry crowns,
Are the triumphs of the blest.
When from life's dull labour free,
    Clad with immortality,
    They enjoy a lasting rest.
    Theodora and Didymus
    Thither let our hearts aspire:
    Objects pure of pure desire,
    Still increasing,
    Ever pleasing,
Wake the song, and tune the lyre
    Of the blissful holy choir.

Well, I'd very much guess so. I don't know the opera, but I am 100% certain, he wasn't meant to be dressed in a black suit like everybody else, but just a minute before walking onto the stage on a whim decided that "ah, well, who cares - just gonna put on a red dress tonight, and while I'm at it: skip socks and shoes - nobody's gonna notice, so what the heck" or something like that 😅
Oh, and by the way: there is a very long history of ONLY men acting on stages, so that for centuries ALL female roles had traditionally been performed by male actors. Also castrati (musici) had a period in which they were VERY popular for female roles in Italian Opera (18th century or so). Maybe the performance in this video honours that tradition in giving a female role to a countertenor? I don't know for sure, though

My guess is that he and Theodora swapped clothes when Didymus takes her place in prison in Act 2. Which is why she's in an oversized shirt
