Oh by the way. Thank you Jim for all of your videos. I have been using On1 for a while now but I still love viewing all of your videos and others as well. Every time I do so, I learn something new. Even if it's a beginner tutorial. You have become my favorite photo editor. Your opinions I like and you don't spend too much time on simple steps that we already know. Kudos to you.

The 2 disappointments I have for On1 is the Perfect Eraser and the Brilliance AI. I've been waiting for years for the Perfect Eraser to work quicker. It's not fast like Lightroom, PS or even Luminar Neo. I'm always having to wait for each little click of the mouse using the Perfect Eraser and it slows down my work flow tremendously. I was excited for the Brilliance AI to shorten my work flow, but the Brilliance AI cannot figure out how to process my off camera lighting. It wants to overexpose places I already exposed properly and remove the creative shadows that were meant to be there in the first place. So there's not much AI to it. The Enhance Module in the Luminar Neo works much better than the Brilliance AI in On1 in my experience. And the Perfect Eraser is far superior in Luminar also.

Thank You for your awesome tutorial Jim! I currently have standalone ON1 Photo Raw 2023 w/ bundle. I downloaded the trial version of 2024.5 due to hearing that iPhone 13 Pro ProRaw DNG files can be used in this new version. I can import them in ON1 as a DNG from Apple Photos but upon importing, they're converted into a jpeg instead of remaining in the DNG RAW file. Do you have any insight on this? Thanks again, appreciate all your hard work!

Hey Jim I have another question for you concerning presets. Do On1 raw have any presets like Lightroom has for portraits? It seems like 95% of all the writing on youtube only deals with Landscape photos when it comes to ON1 Raw. I have to admit one of the luring things about Lightroom is the writers aren't afraid to deal with editing portraits on a daily basis. The presets that deal with the face and individual parts of the face and body are very very appealing but it seems like on1 can do the same thing it just needs to be talked about more. I prefer to stay in On1 unless I have to go into Photoshop or Neo. Can you discuss apples to apples Lightroom's workflow vs On1 workflow? Tell me what you think and how can I make On1 act as if it was lightroom.

I got ON1 2023 earlier this year and with that, an upgrade to ON1 2023.5....It turned out to be a disappointing experience, the software is way too slow and I'm using a pretty powerful machine. The software interface is a horrendous mess of this, that and whatever in an utterly inelegant "presentation"...
Luckily, I got it at a "very good price", but I won't be using it....there is just way too much that needs to be redesigned and improved. I did post a message to that effect after one of their webinars and I see here in this short video that they have a long way to go in order to make me interested again.
One of the features ON1 proudly held up was automatic sky selection/masking...ok, but...did the software do it well enough...? no...not really. I do "sky separation" manually in Photoshop and then it gets done with extreme precision, which, for me, really is necessary...
Also, I wish the talk about "artificial intelligence" would stop - sure, the "artificial" surely is there, but intelligence? ....I don't think so...(same goes for Topaz, sophisticated sharpening, yes, in some cases, but total failure if image content isn't "suitable"....)
Sorry for long post...to sum it up - there won't be any ON1 2024 for me...

Interesting video. I have been a Skylum user for many years, and with the new change in 2024 going to subscription only, I will be taking a closer look at ON1. I moved away from Lightroom because of it going strictly subscription. Now it appears I need to look again. Hopefully ON1 does not follow the same path. I really enjoy your channel, and the way you instruct. Cheers.

I’m in the same boat, I bought Luminar Neo when it came out and a few of the extensions - I don’t need them all. Now they are forcing me to a subscription model negating the very reason I switched. Here’s hoping On1 doesn’t go the same way.

    • @JimNix

Thanks for watching but please note that Skylum will still sell the license instead of subscription (called a Lifetime license). Thank you for watching my videos.

    • @JimNix

I do think it can replace PS but it's perhaps more similar to LR. It's sort of like LR and PS mushed together. But it doesn't do everything that PS does; it would depend on what specifically you do in PS. But overall, a powerful editor for sure.

I'm having very mixed results with ON1. Clearly, the feature set is fantastic-or at least it would be if everything worked as advertised. Unfortunately, the old saw, "Jack of all trades, master of none" applies to this product. For example, AI Keywords works on most of the images in my library (about 37K raws, mostly Nikon and Fujifilm), but not on all. A good 10% of the images do nor get keyworded, even when I try to force it manually. ON1 Support has looked at this, and they can't come up with a reason, let alone a solution. Raw conversion works fairly well, but not as well as DxO PhotoLab. Brilliance AI can produce anything from stunning to garish images, and in the second case, you need to tweak so much that it actually costs instead of saves time. From my perspective, ON1 is probably the second or third-best at every single thing it does, and that is still very good considering how may features it does have. Still, those who expect the product to be best in class for everything are like;y to be disappointed.

    • @JimNix

There is nothing AI-specific that would do that for you automatically. It would require using their portrait tools on the faces and you could adjust it accordingly.

    • @JimNix
      @JimNix  9 месяцев назад

I don't think there is a "better". I think it depends on what you want and/or need from an editor. Both are great at what they do, but they are targeted at slightly different audiences. You can't go wrong with either one in my opinion.

I love On1.... 2023, unfortunately the new version does not have enough to cause me to upgrade. Upgrade now days is a hassle. You have to upgrade video drivers which may break older programs. so unless On1 has a good reason for me to update, I am not going to. What I have now works great. Maybe next year they will do something to cause me to want to update.

@@JimNix That was not my point, I own the product and use it mostly exclusively. I quit upgrading Neo, and now my go to software is lagging behind. The AI features in photoshop dwarf Neo and at 10 bucks a month would be an easy choice over neo. But the developers has dose very little for On1 which is my point. On1 needs to start making it better so people like me who use it will want to upgrade. I want the upgrade but I you are right. I don't have to buy it.

many of us end up accumulating several versions of editors. I have capture one and on one and Luminar. I used to use Luminar exclusively but now I use capture one and, from time to time, on one. I almost never use Luminar Anymore. I will not be renewing my subscription. But switching is a whole different matter. There’s quite a learning curve switching programs and my patience gets tried quite a bit. I switch programs often not because when is better, but I just know how to do a task in one versus another. Short answer, at the price point of on one, it’s fun to try, but by no means is there a reason to switch if you are happy with Luminar. Luminar initial baseline rendering of raw files is the flattest and least sharp of the three. With work, you can get Luminar to render a good product. I just get frustrated with Lumineers baseline RAW photo rendering. Again, not super critical, but my pet peeve about Luminar.
