Would definitely wait for your take, Paul. I love how you don't just do what everyone else did, which was keep things in spec, an even apples to apples comparison. You enabled PBO, MCE, etc. as applicable to give every CPU its best chance, which is what most enthusiasts would do with their own chips. Strong work.

I'll probably move to another platform next generation for my gaming desktop and move this cpu into my server since 16 cores and 32 threads clocked that well should last me in a server basically forever. And in the meantime it's still a meaningful uplift over my 3600xt which while running other processes in the background feels a little anemic at times.

Doing the same. This CPU is going in my living room HTPC (current 5800X) due to PCMR regulations requiring "The one box to rule them all" because emulation likes fast CPUs over GPUs. • @Carrinthe
      @Carrinthe 2 года назад +5

@@paulshardware Exactly, but not only with an AIO. I run a 5950X with an BeQuiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 and if I leave it on stock temperatures stay well below 70C during benchmarks, leaving a lot of room for improvement. With PBO enabled and playing a bit with a negative curve optimizer setting my Cinebench R23 multi score is 29287, with cpu temperatures around 85C.
Like you said, building an expensive system it's not very realistic leaving so much performance on the table. Especially with most of your viewers being computer enthusiastics.

    • @theholt2ic219

It’s honestly the only way you should. PBO is on by default or set to auto. Similar to how Intel has let’s you unlock the power limit or turbo boost. I’ve seen a lot of the benchmark has intel with turbo boost and power limit Unlocked and PBO turned off. I’m like is that really how you are going to compare these CPUs? Only Paul and Steve accurately compare and benchmark these brands of CPUs. Other channels have people believing that the 12900k completely destroys the 5950x in every category and production work load because of it 😂

I appreciate this review as the easy performance gain options for the platform were turned on gives a more honest review IMO. 5800x3d was a no brainer for me as I almost exclusively game and I was already on the am4 platform and have a 6900xt on top of that. I do like to know what the performance differences are for thing I would probably turn on for intel or other AMD CPUs.

I am still going through therapy over the price drop of my 5900x from the sickening $560.00 I paid to it's current price of $379.99 (give or take 20 if on sale)

    Nice overview, and nuanced conclusion.
What I would like to see is the suggestion for a someone with a mid tier gpu. Should they upgrade to a 5800x3d or upgrade to a 5600X and spend the extra money on upgrading the GPU. I think upgrading to the 5600x and spending the rest of a GPU upgrade would give more fps. To me the 5800x3d is only a consideration for even gaming only use cases if you've nearly maxed the GPU.

Hi Paul, please dont stress out over longer upload times. Could you please provide further game testing in a follow-up, like other channels did? Please make sure to include Warzone, it is a game that is quite poorly optimized for pc but made for an 8-core-console-cpu.

When you said that a 3070 will likely result in minimal difference, does that also cover the TI version, or do you think a 5800X would be better to pair with the 3070TI?

I wonder how would a 5800x3d perform against a 5800x and 5900x in gaming + streaming setups. Will that massive cache help? Or will it be hindered by slower clocks.

Currently i am using the Ryzen 9 5950X in my Main-Rig. I thought about using the 5800X3D in this rig because i like the position that the 5800X3D has. It´s a standout CPU with the 3D-Cache and thats what i like, something special. But after this video i become grounded, thank you very much! :)

would be interesting to revisit 5800x3d once AM5 comes available. Heard rumors that the new ryzens will all sport the 3D cache tech so interested to see how the 5800x3d stacks up then (hopefullly with a discounted price for it too lol) Great video as always!

Paul, you have a significant deviation in your CPU temperature results slide for Aida64 stress testing (as compared to all of the published data I have seen as well as my own testing). The 12900K is listed at 72 degrees C, 8 degrees cooler than the 5800X3D. The peak temperature is listed as 83 degrees C compared to 81 degrees C for the 5800X3D. How did you achieve such low temperatures on the 12900K? Thanks in advance.

Speaking of AM4's last hurrah . . . do you have any plans to review the other AMD CPU/APUs released this month? Some of us early adopters of AM4 still on 3xx/4xx chipsets would like to know what your opinion of them is. Thank you, Paul.

Hi, I have a question.. Is it worth upgrading from Amd 3900x to 5900x or 5950x ? I'm working on photshop and lightroom, and Adobe Premier and gaming ..

  • @DarthVandigo

I bought a 5900x for ~$300 (was $400 but had a $100 in points). I do a little more than just gaming and plan on using this until the 2nd gen AM5 CPU's (to also allow DDR5 to come down in pricing). I heard around that the 5800x 3D is going for a bit above MSRP, so for me to get the 5900x for well under $150 less than this new chip, I feel quite good about it.
The 5900x has been a nice bump from the 3700x I was rocking since it launched.
Great review though! Sorry about the lame issues in testing.

It's a hard call for me to make with the 5800x vs x3D, both will be a nice simple upgrade from my 3600x. I think I'll wait a bit to see if I can get one of them on sale for a great price where I live in Canada.

I wondering if the 3D V-Cache will be increased on the next Gen Threadripper series (above what the Ryzen lineup will have which im sure will be included on AM5) to bolster its performance against Intels “rumoured” return to HEDT CPUs 🧐🤔?

The fact that people don't think a 16-24 cpu is hedt is mind boggling. Almost nobody can use a 32 or 64 core cpu, maybe 1% of the population using pcs.

Thank you for including the benchmark for the 5600x it seems to me that it is by far a better value as the additional cost for a casual gamer isn't going to translate into a better gaming experience. I'd love to see how bottlenecked a GTX 1060 6GB would be with that processor. I'm guessing it would make the CPU completely redundant for gaming applications. At least for me.
