My dad got me into bowling and when he had to stop, he gave me his old ball. I don’t know the exact year it was made, but on the top of the ball it says “1975-1982 Don Carter Performance”. I have the original bag as well. I love that ball! I threw one or two times, just to see it in action. Out of every ball I own, that will be one of the very few I never get rid of. What makes the ball more special, my mom gave me a picture of my dad and his teammates that was taken at a local tournament. The picture is from 1976. My dad is definitely the reason why I continue to bowl and why bowling is a big part of my life.
Got all 3 of the angle balls from back in the day from my papaw before he passed 2 still brand new in the box one of em I use for spares. And I’ll never get rid of em
I bought a Manhattan Rubber Ball from the Goodwill for $10.00 I use it as my spare ball and her Nick name is Nezzie which is engraved across the top! I wish I knew her story! But she came from late 50’s to 60’s I love Nezzie and she smoked the pro shop when I had her fitted ! Almost set off the smoke alarm!
My grandpa got me into bowling, I remember being 5 and going to the bowling alley with him every Monday and Wednesday night for his leagues. One day I was sitting in the high chairs and I was trying to watch him throw his bowling ball to watch it shoot from the one board back to the pocket between the 1 and 3 pins and I fell right out of the chair and hit my head on the floor. I got a free bowling rag from the bowling alley to put ice on my head and I still have it to this day. He was the reason I started to bowl and everyone in my family that has watched us both bowl says the way I bowl is identical to him
Problem is there was no 2 handers back then and the average rev rate was 10 lol so game play is going to be way different Also I love your full roller videos
I got a 16 lb Black Beauty as a 9th grader and had it redrilled for finger tip. It was an old house ball from the 50s I believe based on the logo. Used it in juniors and college in the 70s and won a regional in 80 I think. Just imagine a rubber ball with HK-22 added.
So if you think modern equipment doesn't make the game ton easier, here's living proof. Now go to wood lanes, 1960-70's oil and use that same ball the entire year because there was nothing else. Back when a 300 was a big deal and 800 was almost unheard of.
Yes this is true. Equipment is getting better. That's a good thing, that people don't seem to think about in certain ways. When equipment is better and things are "easier", which you still have to be accurate at least moderately, this is also making the sport easier on the body. We don't have to use our wrists and forearms like they used too and even the shoes give us ways to slide more or less for our comfort and bring us longevity. They are helping us bowl better.... longer. Thank you to all bowling companies everywhere! 🙏
I threw my dad's Ebonite Tornado a couple months ago. Semi fingertip! I shaped it the first game, completely lost it the second game, then piped it 3rd game. Piping it looked the best.
Nice one guys! I have a 16lb, rubber Brunswick Black Beauty and it makes a great spare ball, but to get it to shape as a strike ball, I need to slow it down to 14mph, get under it, and get max revs on it on the release without spinning it (if that makes sense).
Packs I’ve been watching you since you were only at like 1 k I really enjoy all of your vids keep it up packy I’ll be watching you at the pba cheering for you!
Definitely need a PBA tournament where everyone is required to use one rubber ball on hand oiled lanes. That will definitely separate the men from the boyz!
And nice part is unlike a few other sports you can find old rubber balls for the sport. Lots of other sports the original items like Wood Tennis Racquets are unusable. About the only other sports you can find older designs for are Darts as the old design are still found online and can buy vanes or fletching for Archery to repair these arrows, Archery becuse of a few brands still making older style target equipment as well as being able to find some old wood designed one piece target bows online in good shape, and then Baseball because of reproduction brands.
To be very honest with you, I actuality bowled a AMF Amflite & it rolled like a hard rubber type of ball Packy. I didn't expect an oldie showed up at a local bowling alley. Funny thing that I posted it on my own RUclips page.
I was trying to figure out what rubber bowling ball was being used... maybe a Brunswick Black Beauty? An old AMFlite (those STANK when drilled!!)? Manhattan Rubber? Ace? I still use my 1974 Roto Star X-2 on occasion. EDIT: it might have helped if I looked at the title screen. I see it is a Brunswick Mineralite solid black version. I have one that is turquoise/black swirl, but never re-drilled for my hand. I also have a Brunswick Fireball that is red/black swirl but otherwise, likely the same as the Mineralite.
@NipkowDisk If I recall, my first ball was a black Beauty. My average wasn't that high, but somehow in my first league (college student), snagged high game of 256. There was another ball I won a bit later, a white and light grey swirl Brunswick Imperial (I think).
Ha -- My first fingertip ball was a Roto Star X-2 I pulled off the rack in '81 when I was 15. Had the PSO plug and redrill for it me and I learned how to hook it. I got an LT-48 shortly after that, first ball I actually bought with money from my summer job along with a C300 double ball bag made of disgusting brown vinyl. It looked like a suitcase. No sissy wheels back in those days, you had to lug that thing.
Packy, is that the Brunswick Mineralite from a couple years ago? If so, I have one of those, got it for $50 from eBay. Every time I’ve thrown it, no matter how much rotation I put on it, it’s a straight, laser-guided missile (great for straight shots, awful for hooking)! Also mine’s a conventional grip with massive fingers!
I wish I still had my Brunswick Black Diamond that left a ton of 10 pins... The only way to throw that ball was to get it high flush so it would trip the 4 pin regularly. It also would have been a great spare ball.
Nobody threw two handed in those days with that equipment.I do like the starter cuda/c but why I had to get out of cuda/c just not the same with lane conditioners
I haven't bowled in years but back in the 80s I had the Gold Angel and the Gray angel carried a 205 ave in 3 leagues. If a got back to bowling again what ball would be good all roundfor today. I am a lefty?
It feels like 80lb because of the high RG. I've felt the difference being high rev. I've never heard anyone mention it before. Edit-I forgot he bowls 15lb normally.
I don't think it's the ball fault (yeah I do)... But, beginning my 60th journey around the sun a few weeks ago, I find that all 60 year old things don't work like they ought to..😅😅
I know someone who bowls league with a 16 pound rubber ball from the 60s (possibly 50s). I wish it would break in half so it would force him to buy a new ball.

Personally, I liked seeing the old rubber ball going down the lane. I think hard rubber and a pancake core should be the standard for bowling to level the field.
packy, do you think brent would be available in the middle of march to bowl an adult youth tournament with league i have to win and this is an adult youth against some of the best youth to ever come out of Kansas the tournament is called the KCO
Yeah. If you think that when I move from Phoenix to The Eastwood or college hill areas of Wichita that I will be working on rubber balls in my workshop, you are kidding yourself. Also, a good way to piss off your wife. Pack, learn that one. Madison, according to the vids, doesn't like to put up with the shenanigans. Keep her happy... Happy wife, happy life....lol

demonstrated how much handicap there is with modern tech. makes you realize how good those old scores really were.

Back in my day
Wood lanes would make the ball hook earlier because they are higher friction tho.
I get what you’re saying but are you saying you don’t like how the sport has evolved and the new technology?
@wavez_9107 No. I love the new tech. But I'm saying it would be easier to climb the hill even back in thr 70s

Have you created a video where you bowled on different lane patterns from different eras, especially before 1990?

OK... I laughed at the stone 9
Seeing that Packy is a Brunwick guy, surprised that a newer LT-48 wasnt used
