In the early '90's, before this interview, Ms.Fleming was performing at the SF Opera House (I forget which show; I was too broke in those days to attend). But I met her, as she had accepted an invitation to a party given by a friend of mine in his small Oakland apartment; most of the gathering were habitual opera attendees in the standing-room-only section; ( ie, fervent fans & dirt-poor). She was charming & unassuming, & gave everyone her undivided attention. All this & the voice of an angel!
Fellow SUNY grad Renee Fleming. Also an Eastman grad (Rochester native here and lived 2 minutes from Eastman). Kudos on receiving a well deserved honor.
A very interesting story revealing a warm and 'normal' lady who has an enormous gift, her singing voice, and who is trying to find that delicate balance between her family and her professional life. Thank you :)
And she STILL’s got it….25 years after this interview! Wish her voice teacher, Beverly Peck Johnson was mentioned. She had a lot to do with all of the success too….
I loved opera my whole life, and there were many greats throughout the years. But Ms Fleming was always something very special in this world☝🏼strangely, the technique was never the main thing that captured me in her presence onstage…it was her feeling the role, her living the character. Her compassion, her sympathy and her empathy for every woman she played onstage always were way above typical opera bravado, and it was something that made her probably the greatest of em all. My love, admiration and adoration for Ms Fleming is truly eternal♥️👏🏼
Controlled scream, what a perfect description. That's why this form of singing is so expressive but not too extreme. Her voice is beautiful, no doubt, some people complain that it's too creamy, but listening to her Beau Soir by Debussy...her musicality is what makes her the best opera singer in America. I listened to her very close at Lincoln Center once, and really, there was no point that anyone can complain about. Btw, her daughters are adorable...must be really really hard to leave them behind for tours. Now she is retired (kinda), I hope she spends more time on what matters to her most. Thank you.
Renee sang beautifully in 'The Hours' at the MET, last season. The role is not as vocally demanding as a major Mozartean role, or as her signature Rusalka. She filled the bill amply.
@@teresitasocorrojoson1861 I read about it in her autobiography, Inner Voice, but this is the first time I've heard is. She really, really is good! She could have easily been at the top of the field in that genre which isn't too surprising.
She’s wonderfully talented and it took courage to be so vulnerable in telling her story. As an aside, completely unrelated to her, turning streetcar into an opera just goes against my every fiber of being. 😣😣😣
God loves you and takes care of you so that this message reaches you. God is the one who created this great universe and has complete control over it. And the greatest loss that a person loses in this life is that he lives while he does not know God who created him, knowing the Messenger of Muhammad, the last of the messengers, and the Islamic religion, the last of the heavenly religions. The great intelligence, before you believe in something or not, is to read it, study it, and understand it well, and then you have the choice to believe in it or not. I advise you on this now before you do not have time to do that.

As did the late Patricia Misslin, I believe. (SUNY-Potsdam)
PING! yes. my high-school music director and voice teacher said my voice had a nice clear "ping". awesome memories.

Amazing singer!
The roar at the end speaks for itself.
Renee is a fellow high school alumni. Unfortunately, I graduated before she was in high school. But I was in the choir

She has not retired. But rather has retired some of her roles. She is still quite busy.
💙
Creamy, what a perfect word for her beautiful tone :)
The best female singer in America, that's saying it 😮

I've seen her the past years in Broadway. I can't believe she can Scat.

Streetcar is brilliantly dramatic.
She was three weeks postpartum during her debut!! Oh my goodness, I didn't realize
What is the first aria that they show her singing?
Nice lady..., No Diva attitude.....
She acted haughty when I met her. How sad
