It's a never ending argument... which era of Genesis is better? When did they lose their prog cool? (Is there such a thing?) When did they sell out? It's such a personal thing and each to their own. All I know is that I found music to enjoy right up to, and including, Calling All Stations. Nick, just listen to everything and you will form your opinions, as you are already doing. One of the greatest bands ever, and a major part of my life.

Genesis had a few b-side instrumentals, but the last one before The Brazilian on LP I can recall is Wot Gorilla? on Wind and Wuthering. I must advise to you, Nick, that I Can't Dance has some fine moments, including Driving the Last Spike, Living Forever, and Fading Lights, all of which you should check out.

Had "And then There Were Three" ended with a Supper's Ready rather than a Follow You. Follow Me, one might have felt compelled to continue on their journey, which was not as compelling as Peter's musical journey. Good to know my instincts sensed their declining octane. It was a long day's journey into night, and by morning, the whisky was water. This song is the kind of thing I would love to hear more of...thanks Lee! Firth of Fifth or Close to the Edge found me Nick and Lex. This reminded me of Moraz' "I"...I guess it is called. Great share, gents! Peace on Earth.

Genesis were great musicians composer they could write many totally different styles easily, Phil wasn't known for composing in their early days but more as a talented arranger, but that changed along the way were he got more and more involved at the end of the 70's, but arranger he still were and a very fine one. (As Peter Gabriel were all in all great too) Also the producers changed along the way from David Hentschel to Hugh Pagdam or Nick Davis, that were also very important in the final sound of the albums. Finally Genesis were keen to try to write more simple tunes and pop in the 80's so they just naturally went to very different ways that were successful but opposed to their early expressions and inspiration, but it happened that they weren't so successful when they delivered such sophisticated artworks, despite more and more fans for that progressive music. But you find great parts still in several newer song until late through "We can't dance" or "Calling all stations", if you listen well. The overall sound got more electronic, and they seemed to have left that acoustic folk shimmering with the acoustic and 12 strings guitars, it's a bit sad. But they left so much of this material you can always listen back and enjoy, they just went on their own road and explore further, and that's OK. Many younger bands were inspired anyway and the legacy will never die.

A great and fun camaraderie. I loved all the banter. I also don’t feel like I have to like all aspects of every bands history. I also don’t begrudge musicians stretching and growing. You were not the same person at 50 that you were at 20 so obviously if you haven’t grown or changed, did you even live. Taking risk also is the most important aspect of Art. Trying new things and failing is how you get better not maintaining the exact same thing over and over that means you’re probably creatively dead. It’s very nice to hear all the different and generous takes that you guys are sharing, and you change your mind sometimes or your mind could be changed. That’s a good thing. Thanks, Leigh and Nick.

This great song is one of three Genesis songs that were used on the old Magnum PI show with Tom Selleck. While this was playing he was planning to assassinate the man who killed his wife. They also used Mama in an episode about a serial killer and Tonight, Tonight, Tonight in a great episode with Frank Sinatra as a retired detective tracking his granddaughters killer 😳. One of the producers must have been a big Genesis fan 😅

"Home by the sea" y "Second home by the sea" son de las mejores canciones de Genesis, así como una sola canción, sin corte entre una y otra. Y The Brazilian también siempre me gustó mucho, es la misma dinámica pero en "Second..." está más trabajada la batería, además de ser una batería real interpretada por Collins tiene muchos más matices. Ojala reaccionen a Home y Second Home. Saludos!

This is the only song on this album that I enjoy. Rest was just too commercial. The next album We Can“t Dance has some great tunes in Fading Lights and Driving The Last Spike. Another good 80's instrumental is Second Home By The Sea (mostly) from self titled. Love Duke. A perfect blend of prog and pop. Never heard anyone like Calling All Stations over Duke. We're all different. Enjoyed the reaction Nick and Lee. Good stuff👍

People can criticize this album sure, but this album and the next made Genesis megastars and a household name. It was a purposeful decision by the band (all 3 members) to change so they didn't become caricatures of themselves. People forget just how big they were, Invisible Touch sold over 15,000,000 albums. They adapted into the pop era better than most of their progressive pears. BTW, this guy Lee doesn't know his Genesis... they had more instrumentals during the 80s, Submarine, Do the Neurotic to name a couple... and all of the post 70s albums still have longer progressive tracks on them. And regarding Phil, do yourself a favor and listen to Phils work with Brand X. Phil was a monster drummer, one of the best to do it.

The Simmons electric drums played here and on tour really took a physical toll on Phil. He blamed them for his later muscular skeletal problems. He played them too hard. Bruford also played them for years but had a lighter touch.

Certainly part of the problem. Poor posture and not properly warming up as he got older also a major contributor. However the over use of steroids to maintain his voice on tour throughout the 80s and 90s may have been the proverbial straw/camels back icing on the cake as it causes brittle bones.

While the next Genesis album, "We Can't Dance" left little to be desired, I think they ended with one of their best ever songs from the Collins era, one that sadly seems to resonate more and more as the years roll by, "Fading Lights". In many ways, a perfect latter day Genesis epic with beautiful lyrics and a sound that harkened back to their prog years, a fitting way to end with Collins. "The Brazillian" was one of the better moments on the too poppy "Invisible Touch", nice pick and reaction!

  • @Pirates_of_the_Underground_I
    @Pirates_of_the_Underground_I 3 месяца назад +1

HOLDSWORTH! Take a shot everyone! 🍺😄
I heard "Invisible Touch" once as an album, but a fave of mine is "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" which was introduced to me by a "Michelob Lite" ad _only_ during the music variety show (NBC) at midnight "David Sanborn's Night Music". It reminded me of the ethereal songs that were on "Miami Vice" the TV series. I still haven't heard "Domino" that for years people were saying that was a must listen.
This was awesome (nice stereo separation), I love electronic drums and I guess that came from Bill Bruford in King Crimson, and my fave, "The Professor" Peart, and how they utilized it with acoustic drums.
I actually like "Duke" a lot and always have. "Duke's Travels" is really special, and "Duchess". "Mama" off of the self-titled album is another special one for me, because its so unique and _creepy._ And "Home By the Sea", intriguing lyrics and delivery. But after Invisible Touch, I was pretty much done with them. I had all those albums previously to enjoy. "Abacab" was surprisingly good when I 1st heard it after it debuted, and then finally bought it. I've heard parts on "Calling All Stations" and remember not liking it. Never saw Genesis either, sadly :(. But would LOVE to see "Steve Hackett" live.
I'm in TOTAL agreement with Lee on Metallica, though I can listen to the Black album now, I'm okay with never hearing "Enter Sandman" again, because its been overkilled on AOR Radio. Bob Rock has produced and/or engineered a LOT of albums I've enjoyed (The production on guitarist "John Sykes" band and debut album "Blue Murder" is freakin' stellar! The drums, bass and guitar are clear and ferocious), but he took out what Metallica was . . . a band that pissed people off and removed their rough edges. I remember being part of an argument under a Yt video many years ago that if "Cliff Burton" (the original bassist for Metallica) were alive, he would have either quit or The Black album (or "Don't Tread On Me" album) would have continued the progression of _their brand of Thrash_ after "...And Justice for All". Even Lars had a bigger kit and he was challenging himself, but during and after the Black album, he got lazy. I can not believe that Cliff would go in another direction with the band, from interviews I have seen of him, because of his tastes and personality.
I know, it may have given them new fans and set them skyrocketing, but almost everyone likes McDonalds Hamburgers . . . and I'd rather have a Gourmet Burger that's thicker, juicier, BEEFIER and made with care, even if I have to pay more for it 🍔😉.
After the Black album, I was done with them too, and I followed more obscure bands of Thrash and Death Metal that were _Progressing_ the genre, "before" _Prog Metal_ would be solidified as a new subgenre of Metal, where many would inspire/influence the genre to come.
@17:24 I also listened to all those "Drummers" too Lee, but there are SOOO many amazing drummers out there these days, and those "Drumeo" vids with Drummers "guessing" other drummers and playing to tracks is a lot of fun. The Portnoy vids and covering Toney Carey's parts is hilarious and astounding. Speaking of (but not from Drumeo) . . .
A "Tribute" to an amazing drummer that changed extreme drumming from "1" album he appeared on, and then from his own band, and those he inspired: ruclips.net/video/iKJdCM-ngGE/видео.htmlsi=DhA5Pyydmcj8XWAE
That was fun guys! Look forward to more! :D And another "Mar-Mar" Sighting! 🐕
    - Tony

Duke's Travels and Dutchess I like, Turn it On Again and Misunderstanding probably just because they're nostalgic. The rest of Duke is just ok for me.
Check out "Dividing Line" and "Congo" and "Shipwrecked" from Calling All Stations, but you have to expect it NOT to sound like Genesis. They're great tracks in my opinion as long as you can separate yourself from all of their other works.
I saw Steve Hackett in 2019 - wonderful! Not sure I care for his singer but the rest was great. He played Firth of Fifth, Clocks, Spectral Mornings and a bunch of other solo and Genesis tunes. Definitely see him if you can. He didn't come here on his recent tour. :(
SO glad you agree about Metallica. I like a few songs of of Black, but previously I liked - no loved - just about every single song they released. Speaking of death metal, I meant to tell you I LOVE Pestilence, especially Consuming Impulse - I noticed one of their songs on your playlist. They were great live, too. The thing about Consuming Impulse - at least for me - is that Reduced To Ashes is such a powerful song, and the way it ends always made me want to listen to the entire album all over again. It's a masterpiece!
Not too much into thrash or death metal anymore, but I have my favorites. The ultimate favorite out of the heavy music is Godflesh which is more doom I suppose. Too many different definitions of genres!

Hi Nick and Lee. It's funny I just watched the two of you doing a reaction to Porcupine Tree, and I mentioned that group, and Genesis being the only two groups I ever bought their entire back catalogue, based on just one album I bought. So with Genesis I also have bought every studio album they did. Yes there are some tracks on later albums I don't play that much, and even some I skip completely. It's fine because every later album has something that is sooo good to hear, and in the past, especially during my late teens and early 20's I have bought albums just for one track I could not get as a single, so no choice but to get the album, which I have done as in the 70's & 80's there was no other way to listen to songs you wanted. This is a great instrumental and the album has some excellent tracks. I even have their last studio album "Calling All Stations", which does not have Phil Collins on at all, and it should have been called, "and then there were two" Lol ... but if you get to hear the title track ...It's a belter !!! Album is worth a listen. ..... [ Oh you just mentioned it. Lol ....Listen to track "Calling All Stations" ] Byee Jim X

I think We Can't Dance is less commercial than Invisible Touch with some fine songs on it. Still very much enjoy Calling All Stations too. But hard to beat the 70s albums, and also Duke is wonderful. Seeing Steve Hackett soon doing The Lamb, in a very small intimate venue which should be amazing. Ladies and gentlemen, only for you we're listening to PETER Banks on keyboards 🤣🤣🤣 Ok, it's a funny time (not for world! But in the world everyday is a bad day... e che caxxo! - italian dirty slang with z for x!). About song: it's a piece of skill, nothing else. I had fun with you. 😍😍

It’s a Simmons drum kit, and Phil kicked ass on it

I think they did a few better songs after this. Was this a different mix? There were details in the keyboards before the drum "solo" and more guitar than I ever remember hearing at the end.

Not that I'm aware of, but many times when I hear the songs on this channel, I hear things I've never heard before.

Land of Confucion and Brazilian are my favorite songs from the album. I'll never listen to the other songs.

Do the neurotic is another outstanding instrumental song by genesis.

I really dislike the album overall, but this is a standout track. Domino, too. I don’t hate pop. I just hate most Genesis pop. I love Abacab, though ❤

    Hey Guys,
Not one of My favourite GENESIS instrumentals.
    Very repetitive and boring.
    Sorry....and, l love GENESIS.
    Got all The Albums.
Steve Hackett was a big loss.
    Keep Rocking.

This instrumental, which is 100 light years away from the majestic "...in that quiet earth" but is good, and 'In the glow of the Night", are the only 2 things that are saved from Invisible TRASH.

Calling The Brazilian "the last great song that Genesis wrote", didn't liked Duke ?... What strange tastes ! I don't even consider The Brazilian as a "great" song. To me it is the last ranked track of the album. But again : personal opinions.

By the standards of Genesis instrumentals I think it's fairly weak. The production on IT sounds 'plastic' to me. When it came out, I had been into Genesis for about 3 years and although I could hear them slowly sinking into pop oblivion, IT was a step too far. It strayed too far from what I believe Genesis stood for. Songs like In Too Deep, Anything she Does and Throwing it all Away are too insipid for Genesis IMO. I thought We Can't Dance was marginally better than IT, and that's fairly poor. There's a few good songs dotted around their pop phase, but to be brutally frank..not many.

Most overrated Genesis song on the Genesis reddit.
I'm mean, yeah it's a nice instrumental, but the intro is not so good and it's very repetitive, so yeah that's it.
