The poor girl had to go through what most would never, and that's enough burden. She deserves compassion and empathy and even the benefit of the doubt because she's just a kid who was irreparably harmed by the people around her and the world. But here's the thing... she's a fighter, with nerves of steel, and has the right understanding to get through tough times, so I have faith in her that she overcomes. That's what coaches can at least do to comfort an athlete in a final practice. You do not expect them to cry as well in order for other watchers to say she's sincere. It will only make the situation even worse.

It seems like Russian teachers only criticize and scold the students they are invested in; if they don't pick on you, that means they don't care about you, so even though it's obviously stressful and hurts more in the present, in the long run when emotions calm down, these students might actually find more comfort in the gestures the rest of us think of as uncaring. I don't fully understand this and I'm dubious as to how appropriate this would be when an event's already over and you end up just rubbing salt in an open wound, but I wonder if Kamila might feel better after having been berated, because that means Eteri is still invested in Kamila's future, as opposed to if Eteri had been kind and said "well you did your best" because that actually means it's all truly over. Don't know if anyone has more insight. A lot of times these things do have to be taken in context, and what these children hear may be different from what we interpret as outsiders.

Maximalism stifles creativity by removing it as an option from childhood. And it creates a paradox between wanting to be isolated from the world yet needing the ideas of freer societies to function.

@Denise Walsh I've seen her skating for years when she was a little girl. She's absolutely phenomenal. She can dance like no other. She uses her whole body. Let's say she was drugged. Then the other Russians would be as well and she still Leaps and Bounds above them. So assuming they are all drugged, Valieva is a once-in-a-lifetime skater even still. And many worlds renowned coaches including Brian orser have even said that her Talent is real. That's why he wants to train her. If he thought it was from drugs he would not want to train her.. heart medication if needed maybe could make you train better on jumps, but it's not her jumps that make her so great. It's her amazing spins flexibility and movement. Brian orser trained Yuna Kim, who many think is a phenomenal skater. Brian orser knows true Talent when he sees it which is why he wants to train Kamila so badly

@Denise Walsh I've seen her skating for years when she was a little girl. She's absolutely phenomenal. She can dance like no other. She uses her whole body. Let's say she was drugged. Then the other Russians would be as well and she still Leaps and Bounds above them. So assuming they are all drugged, Valieva is a once-in-a-lifetime skater even still. And many worlds renowned coaches including Brian orser have even said that her Talent is real. That's why he wants to train her. If he thought it was from drugs he would not want to train her.. heart medication if needed maybe could make you train better on jumps, but it's not her jumps that make her so great. It's her amazing spins flexibility and movement. Brian orser trained Yuna Kim, who many think is a phenomenal skater. Brian orser knows true Talent when he sees it which is why he wants to train Kamila so badly
