    Back when 7” round headlights with plug-in bulbs were standard fitment on most cars, Cibie made retrofit halogen headlight kit- their own reflector/lenses and halogen bulbs. The difference in reach, and especially the beam pattern control, was phenomenal. I got my set on sale for $70 in 1977, and took them with me on several cars until square headlamps took over. Forty-odd years and many vehicles later, I still haven’t had headlights that were better.

    Having followed your journey from the beginning, my imagination has always run ahead of the build. This episode has massively caught up with my daydreams. The steering wheel is fabulous, (I imagined a period Moto Lita flat 13" alloy/leather wheel as on a 1974 Mini I owned back then, but that Raid is even better) When you brought out the Cibies I could hardly believe it. Again that Mini had Cibie Biodes and they turned night into day. This project is really showing now your dedication and commitment to detail, truly magnificent. Thank you.

    It’s so inspiring to watch and listen to you articulate the decisions and processes. I have the training and skills to perform most of what you do as far as, if someone said “make this, join this here etc” . However I would have absolutely no idea as far as the design decisions, and attention to detail as far as components etc. I remember in a recent episode you talking about making mistakes. I am actually surprised at the lack of them.

    You showed the headlights out of the box and I was more "meh... Really?" And then you put the money against the car and... Yup. It works. You don't really need the busy fog lights right below it. Personally I like the fog lights in the middle of that big smile and the turn signal separate but the headlights are an excellent choice and based off of that. Run with it.
    The tail lights are very cool but I would love to see the Amber triangles on the outer edges of each side, which also puts the license plate light straight down. To me that's what looks best and "correct" but every time you've done something that I wasn't sure on it still came out great so your judgment overrides mine for sure.

    Great episode again guys! I know you won’t be driving with the fog lights on that much but it might be worth moving the indicators a bit further away from them as it would be a shame if the indicator was lost in the light beam of the fog light. There’s a Peugeot on sale at the moment that has invisible front indicators when the headlights are on. Iv nearly hit a couple on a local roundabout.
    Also do rear brakes on a mid engined car need to be bigger or have more bias than on a front wheel drive car to help slow the rotating mass of the driveshafts and gearbox? You might have to also slow the engine if you stop faster than the engine braking slows the engine too. Might not be a problem but I just thought more rotating mass might need more braking force.

    Hi Oliver, nice to see the car coming together after painting. As a follower of your build, I have a similar concept car, a Lancia Beta Montecarlo, I was particularily interested in your braking system. I want to ask you to reconsider the basics. Perhaps you've done so, but I would like to offer my help with the design of the brakes. It;s a common mistake to place standard braking systems of front driven cars to rear driven cars. The brake bias is likely to be wrong as thes front dirven cars have a bias of 65 of more % tot the front. As I saw your rear calipers, I'm wondering if you are about to make the same mistake. Bias should be more to the back. If you're interested I can provide you with a calculation sheet in which you can exactly calculate the braking needs!

    Ngl I was kinda cringing that you left those DAMN expensive headlights in a lose & floppy fiberglass bonnet no mounts or anything i kept having to look away plz don't do that again my fragile heart can't take it XD
    personally I don't think round headlights will work on the rear without some major body sculpting/modifications to the entire car, basically super car designs from the 70's are a combination of roundness & edge in complete balance very curvy cars like the Maserati Bora, Lotus Esprit & a couple others had square rear lights on a flat panel to basically contrast the softness of the rest of the car making the rear really pop out giving them there distinctive looks, the cars you mentioned were very angled cars so the contrast was the round rear with the round lights.
    not to mention if you put them on it'll no longer looks like the original car which IMO is counter intuitive to the goal of this project which is being the best damn mosquito to ever exist if it no longer looks like the original car then is there much point in it.
    One thing i'm kinda looking forward to is the interior design

    Watched this a second time, and I'm compelled to ask: Why go for LED lights on a car that is so rooted in the 70's? I feel like a one man crusade when it comes to LED's on cars of any era. Brake lights and indicators. I feel my brainwaves jump every time they go on and off. Absolutely loath the colour changing sidelights that double as indicators but perhaps that's a beef for another day. Have people seen those funny videos of cats that jump every time a printer feeds the paper forward a few millimetres? That's how my brain feels when I see LED's going on and off. I'd love to know other people's thoughts on this one, maybe I'm just weird. (Well I AM weird but I can't be the only one? 😂)

      Its a very small car with a roof line that runs lower than the wing mirrors on most cars so if I tap the brakes I need everyone behind me to know. Led, halogen the best bulbs for the best places but I'm not a fan of cold white lights for headlights or sequential LEDs either

    Hi. I'm not trying to be critical, but I don't believe the the name Mosquito is really a good name for the car. Mosquitos are annoying little animals, that most people work diligently to kill on sight. I liked the original name, and I understand why you changed it, but it fit the car far better because the only thing that you really used from the old car, was hope. Good on you to save the car!!!

      @@OliverPickard Hi Oliver. I understood that you had your own logic in the name choice, but mosquitos are such annoying little pests, that any positive association with that name just doesn't feel quite right. Great little car though. I have a late 50s Dauphene, and I am considering the same powertrain. The Renault will be quite a bit heavier than Mosquito, so if I do it, I may have to add a little turbo.

      @OliverPickard  Месяц назад +1

      @@jimalexander9230 Be aware that turbo adds a LOT of heat management and weight, for prospective many rotary engines weigh more than v8s once you take into account all the things that keep them alive and adding weight to combat added weight creates a downward trend in performance but far the best turbo k I've seen is Bisi Motos wagovan

    • @jimalexander9230
      @jimalexander9230 Месяц назад

      @@OliverPickard the heat can be an issue, but the ability to double the hp, and only add a hundred pounds of weight is very appealing. I don't really have many good driving roads near me, and the ones that are close, are always busy. That project is at least a couple of years away, so it might not even get started.
