    • @jabbafo
      @jabbafo 2 года назад +4

      Why are those the only two options? Anxiety can be a necessary tool for all humans, it gives us a sense of urgency in a time of need, clearly developed to keep us alive during our development...but anxiety created through "artificial stressors", stresses that are unnecessary to the survival of a human being.
      You can't tell your kids that excessive anxiety (and for a kid to feel anxiety, it's usually excessive) is something normal for a child. Anxiety causes stress, and stress can do some horrible things to the physical development and emotional development of a child.
      You think people are crazy now, wait until you see a generation where every adults was anxious child, who had been told it's normal.

    My youngest daughter says much the same about her anxiety... it's not her problem that she sees more of the big picture than the rest of us do... it's our problem that we can't be bothered to look further than our own noses, because we don't want to look any further, lest we become anxious ourselves. Brave little cuss, she is.

    I'm a psychologist and people coming to therapy to learn how to deal with their anxiety is by far my most common complaint. I spend a lot of time normalizing anxiety and teaching relaxation strategies to stop it from boiling over. Short of a diagnosed panic disorder, most anxiety is very normal and seems to go awry when people start being anxious about their anxiety.

      Ugh, “kids are meant to be seen and not heard” - one of many idioms that I’d like to see thrown on the ash heap. I love having conversations with my kid; it’s a big part of encouraging his interests, dealing with problems, and teaching him how to engage with others. We underestimate children and THEY would be better off if we respected the potential they have within them.

      It doesn't guarantee anything in your life. Because there is no guarantee, good, bad indifferent. Life comes at you how life is going to come at you. I walked away after being hit head on by a truck, and BTW I was not in a vehicle. I've been broke, I've been good, my family is all gone, but I'm still here, still wake up in the morning, still like life. It isn't always good, it isn't always bad, but I still get to experience it, to try better the next day. That won't happen for ever, and that day is getting closer, but it isn't here yet, so I'm still going to be here to see more, feel more, enjoy more and yes, feel pain again. Life is life. Enjoy.

Going to the library in my PJs with my favorite blanket & stuffy, & listening to the Librarian reading a book. Then I would check out as many books as I could read in 2 weeks- when they were due back. Anxiety is very treatable with medication and psychotherapy. I’m glad he mentioned that for everybody. We need to dismantle the stigma of mental health problems as being a weakness. See a psychiatrist. Excellent interview!

    WOW. This man made some beautiful points. I've always said anxiety is a strength not a weakness because those with anxiety are more in tune with the world and truly care about on a different level. Second, the point made about wanting our children to grow up to be better than us and the only way to see that happen is to give them the knowledge that we did not have growing up. To shield the from that knowledge would be hypocritical. 🙌

    So amazed that he admitted on national television to medication and therapy. For 15 years, only my immediate family knew I struggled and was on medication/seeing a psychologist. Over the course of the pandemic, I had a particularly bad episode, and needed to spend a week in a secure ward for the first time in my life. Oddly, perhaps because that wasn't an experience I could really hide from others anymore, it sort of forced me to open up...which actually ended up deepening some of my relationships, and helped me "recruit" of few other folks who could help look out for me. It also helped me get access to some new treatments, which have really made a difference.
    I don't even want to have to go back, but some days I am grateful for the disclosure it sort of aided.

    The most powerful and inspiring interview I’ve ever seen on the show. Jason Reynolds demonstrates the depth of intention, thoughtfulness, wisdom, and passion we need right now to make the changes we must make for the future of our human community. Real changemakers like Mr. Reynolds need to be featured more on platforms like this. Those people we pay attention to and shine the spotlight on are the people who become our mentors and set the tone for our culture, and Mr. Reynolds is one that deserves our attention.

As a child therapist for over 10 years serving low income families, i have the same vision of helping children to be seen just as they are...and to experience acceptance from another safe adult and learn to accept themselves. Thank you for this!
