- Breeze Airways, the airline making headway as a new American low-cost carrier, is reminding Airbus that its still interested in a stretched version of the popular A220-300. The airline already has more than 20 of the -300s in service, with almost 70 on order.

I think this particular variant will be called the A220-500 since theres no -200 or -400 variant, only he -100 and the -300.
Or it could be called the a221
@@John_.Cabell_.Breckinridgea221 is a222-100
A220 has different flight controls than A320 family. Same reason SWA only flys 737s.
Pilots sometimes have to learn
A320 logbooks are too full to place orders. With 737 max delayed production, A220-500 fits right into airlines' desperate moves.
I hope Airbus will build the stretched 220 despite the fact that it will compete against the A320. Newer and more efficient designs will win in the long run.
A319 is already obsolete.
@@roamaroundgisg7362 ok, I edited the comment to say a320 instead of a319. My point remains.
Airframe manufacturers always consider offering stretched versions. Even back to the days of the DC-1.
Im Januar 2023 sagte Airbus-Marketingchef Christian Scherer, es sei nicht die Frage „ob“, sondern „wann“ der A220-500 kommen werde. It's called intern the A221...
The only reason Airbus has hasn’t launched the A220-500 aircraft is that the program is not profitable yet.
Go for it stretch it to about the MD 80 size with 5 abreast seating you would have something to compete with the 737/700 and it would be newer than the 320
**Knock knock**
Airbus: Who's there?
It's me, A220-500!
Boeing: 😢
I'll purchase A220-1000.
why would they bulid streched a220 when they have already in producition a320 and a321
To increase production slots for A321neo. A321neo overtook A320neo few years ago. Many airlines wanted to order more A321neo, but Airbus slots are only empty 2030s.
Also, the stretched variant would be the most efficient narrowbody jet on the market. Better than A320neo or MAX8.
Because the A220 is much more efficient and has much more modern technology than the A320 family, which is nearly 40 years old.

It’s a hpc not the there are many hpc = supercomputer
Well, I prefere Embraer E2 195.
Won’t this capsize a320 sales?
Then allocate production from the a320 to the a220 and sell those instead.
Nex month
Of course, they are having trouble ramping up production. Besides depending on Spirit AeroSystems for flight critical components, the A220 has significant engine problems. With EgyptAir selling it's entire fleet.
Egypt Air is not selling them because of engine issues.
Yes the Belfast location makes the composite wings and Spirit also owns the Morocco plant but Airbus could buy them back.
Anything with stretch.... history doesn't always in favor for air safety.
not necessarily, robust original design will allow stretched version no problem
the A220 design is still practically brand new so there's a lot of life left in it (and the fact it was designed to be stretched in the first place)
The stretched version was planned from the beginning.
I hope Airbus doesn't let these airlines pressure them into this.
Why not
Yes. It would be foolish to listen to what your customers want you to build. You tell them what they’re going to pay you for and you tell them they will like it too! And to thank you!
Just buy A321...
The A321 would be bigger than the A220-500. The A321neo family has delivery slots filled until the middle of the next decades so they wouldn’t get it anytime soon. Also, the A220 series uses much more modern and efficient technologies than the A320 family, which is nearly 40 years old.
Hard to do that with the lack of A320 family production slots and certification issues with the XLR.
